Erik showed us a prototype made during the business development process that involved using a greenscreen overlay on a Microsoft Surface table, with a person gesturing in a planned pattern - the basic screens of the Surface table where then mocked up in the video using Adobe After Effects. This allowed for a quick turnaround of a concept (2-3 days) that demonstrated the natural movement and context of a gestural interface in an engaging way without requiring a full Surface prototype. Microsoft Sketchflow - Erik then showed us how Clarity has been using Sketchflow within the Expression Suite to prototype early concepts in a way that shows movement from screen to screen and interactive elements, in a manner that generates usable code. Leveraging design assets in the final project is a goal in order to save effort and cost, especially if paired with an iterative process to ensure feedback. "Does anyone else have ideas on how to make that accessible for color-blind users?" Maybe having the color letter in the color itself? Say yellow, red, green you could just have a Y R G in the colour itself. Otherwise I know for myself(guy and colour-blind), Yellow, Red, Green would probably look the same as Yellow, Green, Red. And as for symbols, I don't know. Is this protected from being "reverse-hashed"? If someone can take 4 symbols and reverse the process into your textual password then you might as well just get rid of the %u2022%u2022%u2022%u2022%u2022 and make it plain text. But personally, as neat as this it, I just don't see it being any real value in usability. We all know how to type in passwords. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . You are warned in the beginning that new content will be added at times due to mandates from above. This is not negotiable nor is it avoidable. But there's no way of predicting what that content will be. Here is my question: What would you do or not do in the planning and design of the site to try to ensure scalability? [snip] Things that come to mind (in no particular order): * I'd be trying to get some of the folk giving "mandates from above" involved in the project. It sounds like they need to be. * I'd be thinking that the project is going to need ongoing work by UX/ developer folk. I'd be letting the client know that early. * I'd be wondering if we can section of the variable bits into one particular area (e.g. do all the special cases come down to special events & news - in which case we can section off part of the site to deal with them specifically.) * I'd be trying to get an idea of what kinds of thing might be coming down the pipe in the future. Then I'd start asking about what people don't expect to happen. I find it useful to ask clients to think about counterfactuals to the first thoughts that pop up in their head. It's like weather prediction. The hard cases are those that have lots of different chaotic outcomes. Try and hone in on those. * I'd be wondering if we could use something where we can have more of emergent structure (something wiki-ish, tagging, etc.) rather than one that's designed up front. * I'd be wanting a platform that's popular and probably open-source so that I can easily find folk to hack on it, and leverage the efforts from other folk, as time goes on. * I'd be looking to sites with similar problems (e.g. BBC News, Wikipedia, etc.) to see how they deal with the problem. * I'd be trying to get some of the folk giving "mandates from above" involved in the project. It sounds like they need to be. Oh wait. I've said that already. Probably coz it's really, really important! * I need a conversation to figure out what else to think about :-) (and of course - all the normal card sorting, paper prototyping, etc. to get the clients talking and thinking about what they want.) Neat, but he doesn't address color-blind users. Maybe showing small pictures or symbols would address the needs of these users (I know there's already a few sites that use something like that where you have to either choose the picture that you chose as your password or check the associated image once you login with a text pwd). Does anyone else have ideas on how to make that accessible for color-blind users? Thanks, Courtney -Original Message- From: discuss-boun...@lists.interactiondesigners.com [mailto:discuss-boun...@lists.interactiondesigners.com] On Behalf Of Yohan Creemers Sent: Friday, July 31, 2009 5:09 AM To: disc...@ixda.org Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Password Masking and Chroma-Hash An experiment from Mattt Thompson in how to visualize the input of masked password fields: http://mattt.github.com/Chroma-Hash/ Some explanation taken from his blog: Chroma-Hash displays an ambient color representation of the input as it is being typed. Use Case 1: Login Check If your password normally is represented as "red, purple, orange", and after you've finished typing you see "pink, green, grey", you'll know you mistyped it somewhere along the way. This avoids a potentially long wait for the server to respond with a "failed login" notice. Use Case 2: Password Confirmation When you sign up for a web service, you often have to type your password twice to make sure that you entered what you wanted correctly. As in the demo, a user will be able to confirm that two fields are the same visually. There are, of course, many alternatives for live-input validation of password confirmation, but this is another viable use case for Chroma-Hash. http://mattt.me/2009/07/chroma-hash-a-belated-introduction/ See also a recent discussion about password masking http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=43168 - Yohan Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! They are utterly terrible - just one example: if a user comes to your site, and then clicks to any other page - the address bar will not change. If they attempt to link anyone to a page they have found on your site, the link will a) display the wrong page (the original page) and b) include the header bar, thus perpetuating the problem. Plus those bars could easily add script so when a user browses around, the bar gets the new Url and sends it back to their HQ. I can see some browser-habit spying in this kind of instance. But like Joshua said, these have "the owner value (not user value) in mind." And I agree. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Q: Persistent header bar from FB and LinkedIn
Josh is spot on. One of the most important reasons I think FB uses the frames is to reduce "bounce rate" and increase visitor loyalty. This is an old technique that has been used since...I would say the "very beginning". The code could look like anything (javascript most likely, but I've done it in C#, VB and JS). The page itself examines the url from the query string parameter that was passed to it from another page (i.e. you wall) and then it sets the bottom iframe's url to that parameter. Obviously this is the simplest example. -Jake . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hi Alan Thanks for responding. My issue with a checkbox is that conventionally the response to the user's action isn't instantaneous (though it is possible with js) - normally a checkbox is followed by a submit button to action the user's input. I'm after more of a live on/off switch, which is executed quite nicely on the prev link: http://widowmaker.kiev.ua/checkbox/ Cheers s 2009/7/31 Alan James Salmoni : > Perhaps I'm missing something. Re: [IxDA Discuss] toggle on / off design pattern
Perhaps I'm missing something. Isn't the classic pattern for a toggle the checkbox? I've found from my own testing that users often get confused if the wording is not clear enough to a checkbox. If you want a push-button type thing with a light, it could work for vision-impaired users by having a dark centre for off and a bright centre for on. This gives a strong visual contrast. Think of colours in terms of brightness rather than hue and you can get a good visual distinction. Or you could overlay some fairly obvious symbols over a button like a dark red cross for off and a bright white tick for on. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] toggle on / off design pattern
Thanks for all the responses, I'm digging this one: http://widowmaker.kiev.ua/checkbox/ - ideally I want this to be workable for screenreaders, but I think the application is too complex for the company to build an accessible version - it would cost $$$. ixda saves the day again : ) 2009/7/29 Adam : > Lots of good suggestions above.
