[IxDA Discuss] Research into the experience of \free trial software\?
Where's all the research into the user experience around free trial software? It's hard to believe that there's not been a good deal of focused effort on understanding how to design the trial experience to ultimately lead to a sale - I'm not finding it so far. Maybe it's just thought to be obvious that you make it easy to begin using the trial, easy to get invested in using it, and easy to convert the trial into the real version of the software? thanks, Michael Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] Product Standard Guidelines
Hi there. Does anyone know of a good resource which outlines basic product standards for a website. (it's a very data heavy site) I imagine it's easier to find more quantifiable items such as load times and working across browsers, but I'd love to find something that sets a minimum bar for clarity in the UI design. We're looking for something which will help the engineering and QA teams evaluate if the site is adequate from a IxD perspective. Any help would be much appreciated. [IxDA Discuss] Best practise for adding items to comparison tool
What's the general view: is it best to limit the number of items you can add using compare functionality or better to allow an unlimited number? [IxDA Discuss] Cascading Undo Model for a Blogging System
I am currently working on the design of a blogging system (ala WordPress, Movable Type) as an exercise of my independent study. As part of the design, I would like to design and implement an application-wide cascading undo model such as the one described by Jan Vratislav (http://bit.ly/UYerR) In this model, undos are based on a cascade of hierarchal actions in the history, whereby a user can selectively undo an action (which also undos every subsequent action in that action's hierarchy). At first look, it seems that it would be fairly easy to model the action hierarchy at a higher level (e.g. CRUD operations on articles, comments, pages, etc.), but it appears things will get complicated at the content level for the content of a particular article or page. My first thought would be to look at the internal HTML representation of an article's content and base the action hierarchy off of changes to individual DOM nodes/attributes. Any further guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated! Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Windows Photo Gallery for user testing?
Long scrolls can be achieved in Powerpoint by slicing your screen dumps in Photoshop and putting down arrows at the bottom of each page (and up arrows on following pages to go back) to approximate click-scrolling. With a bit of graphics savvy, put a mock scroll bar on the right-hand side and the clickable hot-spots top and bottom! It is enough to give the user the feeling. Good luck. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Best practise for adding items to comparison tool
Alison - So far in the e-commerce benchmarking I've done, comparison features have been few and far between. So I would suggest sticking with something simple that is likely to get implemented. (You can always improve on it later.) From a UX perspective, though, unlimited items (with adjustable column order) sounds good. Horizontal scrolling would be much preferable to paging in my view. Hi Michael, I'm currently writing a book called Make them Care, and this will be one of the big problems I address. In fact I just happened to be talking to a startup today about this very issue. Here's a related one: when do you ask for credit card numbers? Is it better to get the credit card up-front for a free-trial or is it better to get it at the end of the trial? Which has better conversion...etc. You can find out more here: http://oneflightbooks.net Cheers, Josh On Sep 8, 2009, at 9:34 AM, Michael Etgen wrote: Where's all the research into the user experience around free trial software? [IxDA Discuss] [Event] UX Brighton: Remote U ser Research - A 360° degree view
** Sorry for the cross-posting ** Hi Everyone, The next UX-Brighton event on remote user research, and we've got a fantastic line-up for you. As usual it's free to attend. *When*: October 13th, 2009 (6pm start) *Where*: iCrossing, Black Lion Street, Brighton. (If there's a big demand for tickets we may move the event to a bigger venue nearby) *Tickets*: Free, but you need to book a place on eventwaxhttp://uxbri_1.eventwax.com/ux-brighton-remote-user-research---a-360-degree-view Although the audience of websites is global, the most common ways of user research are spatially bound, and confined to a research laboratory. This is in direct contrast to both the global spirit of the web and the broad selection of people who view a website or online application. Tonight's talks will show how you can use online methods for carrying out usability research at each stage of the design process. *Remote usability applied - A case study by Louise Klinker* Louise will discuss how she used a remote research tool in a recent project. She will explain how remote user research can be applied, and how it can influence the development process of the project. Louise is a User Experience Consultant at Flow Interactive. She has worked for some of the leading companies in design and research, including Mollerup Designlab, X service design, and of course Flow. Bill Buxton said in ‘Sketching User Experiences’ that “Louise can hold their own with the best of them”. She has worked with clients including The BBC, The Guardian, The Foreign Office, BUPA, Tesco, Nokia, Sky and Shell. *The Birth of an Idea - Remote Ethnography by David Tait and Ofer Deshe* Ofer and David will take us through a journey from initial concepts through the design of a new remote ethnography web service. The service is a new framework that enables easier access to contextual research and includes data capturing technologies such as smart phone apps, an online web diary, email and social media integration. Additionally, the framework includes a number of built-in qualitative analysis tools. Analysis is conducted in real-time allowing ongoing monitoring of behaviours in remote locations and contexts. Before pursuing this venture, Ofer worked as a Principal Consultant at Flow and has led numerous user experience research, design and strategy projects. David is an innovative computer scientist with expertise in designing knowledge, customer insight systems, and search algorithms. Prior to working on this service, David designed a search interface for a financial trading solution and a Mandarin phonetic search algorithm. *Testing the Prototype - Synchronous Remote Testing by Volker Gersabeck of pidoco°* Volker, who is coming all the way from Berlin, will show off the next version of pidoco°. Pidoco° is a web-based software suite for prototyping and testing. It allows for live-collaborative designing a prototype, which is instantanously available on many devices (desktop, mobile, etc). Built around the prototype are different ways for collecting feedback from all the different stakeholders. With the new version comes a module which allows for moderated remote usability tests with zero set up cost. Volker co-founded pidoco°, and has been leading its development since the first line of code was written three years ago. He also co-organised the UXcamp 2009 in Berlin, and is already planning a European one for next year. *Testing the Product - Asynchronous Remote Testing by Sabrina Mach* Sabrina will present Webnographer, a tool for un-moderated remote usability testing, which enables fast and cost effective testing of any website with participants across the world. She will show how Webnographer can be used to inform the design of your website, how it benchmarks performance, and how to gain insight into user behaviour through the different reports that the tool offers. Sabrina is co-founder of FeraLabs, a usability consultancy specialising in remote user research. Using Webnographer, Sabrina helps clients understand their user’s behaviour, providing them with formative insight for design teams, as well as summative results for benchmarking website performance. *→ **Book your free ticket now on eventwax*http://uxbri_1.eventwax.com/ux-brighton-remote-user-research---a-360-degree-view -- Dr. Harry Brignull User Experience Consultant http://www.90percentofeverything.com + 44 (0)7920 474784 Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Aside from research, what do you do to relate better to users?
If anything, I always make an effort to learn from interactions I deal with on a daily basis. Just last week, some lady asked me if I were good with batteries. I gave her a slightly baffled look, so she directed me to her key fob for her Volvo. Apparently, the fob dropped to the ground and the battery came flying out and she put it back in the wrong way, but couldn't get it to open again. It wasn't the battery of course, so much as the design of the fob itself. Of course, I got it fixed with a fork at the restaurant we were both in. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] add to favorites vs save for later
Any thoughts or articles on add to my favorites (as an action from a product page) vs add to my wishlist (which I think is the same thing?) vs save for later (as an action on the shopping cart page, a la Amazon)? Re: [IxDA Discuss] add to favorites vs save for later
I think that add to favorites implies local storage of the reference, while add to my wishlist implies server-based storage which is accessible from anywhere (and in the case of Amazon, by more than just yourself). Re: [IxDA Discuss] Best practise for adding items to comparison tool
From my own research, there isn't going to be a single solution that suits everyone. Among the people I tested, half preferred a top-down strategy(start with everything then filter out what is not relevant) and half preferred a bottom-up strategy (begin with a few options and then add upwards). This isn't very useful to you but if possible, try some research and testing to find out how your users respond. For pagination or scrolling, I guess it depends upon the task and the number of items. Having several thousand items makes scrolling less effective; having 11 items over 2 pages with a single item on the second page is also annoying. It depends upon what you are trying to achieve for your users. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sheri...I think it depends on the context. Wishlist makes sense for books because they are a small dollar commitment and therefore a small psychological commitment, save for later for bigger ticket items because they imply a less serious obligation. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I have no data to support my perceptions, though. Just to provide one data point - that wouldn't match my personal idea of what it meant at all :-) None of the variations would suggest one particular method of storing the information to me. For me the meaning of the phrases is going to depend on the context and why you're persisting the information. For example: * add to favourites has a ring of I like this rather than I want this. I can see myself hitting it on a DVD store to say I love a movie that I already own; in the expectation that it might help the site recommend other movies to me - or as a mini-review. * add to wishlist says to me strongly that I want this. I want to buy it - or get somebody else to buy it for me. * save for later has a ring of need to think about that to me. Need to put something aside for now while I go off and do some comparison shopping. But that's just me rambling without understanding the OP's working context. I'd probably go mock something up and stick it in front of some people - and see what happened. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Aside from research, what do you do to relate better to users?
- look for bulletin boards related to the domain you are interested in. read what people are asking about/complaining about. - go into a store where they sell the thing you are designing. Ask people questions. - if you're redesigning something: try teaching someone unfamiliar (but not totally out of the realm of possibility) about it. - try and make up personas. What *might* they care about/do/love/hate? Don't kid yourself that you are basing stuff on the assumptions you bring to the table, but in many cases (especially for general consumer stuff) you'll have plenty of insights. The personas are just a way to frame up the info for yourself and others. Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Aside from research, what do you do to relate better to users?
Re-reading old research, particularly the comments and introduction to the person I made is something I find useful to keep me on top. When I started my recent job, we started some weekly meetings to discuss future improvements. At the first meeting, I took everyone out onto the streets to ask passers by about our field and what they thought. I guess this is research of a kind, but it removed all the comfort layers that we had from testing in a lab and put us in the front line and in touch with customers who didn't necessarily want to take part in research. I also like to read about art but it doesn't relate directly to my job. I guess it's one of those 'what it is to be a human being' kind of things. Different interpretations on the same piece of art show how varied we can be. @Adrian - it's a good one isn't it? I spent an afternoon in the call centre and we're all planning on visiting local branches soon (staff as well as customers). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] add to favorites vs save for later
Sheri, I'd have to agree with Adrian that neither of the phrases suggests any technology as to how it would be saved. There are, however, societal associations with 'wish list' and 'save for later'. A wedding registration is a wish list of sorts, and 'Save for later' also reminds me of putting food in a doggie bag, as if you are going to begin to nibble on something and then finish it at a later date. The term Favourites has been clouded by the use of it to sometimes refer to bookmarks on Internet Explorer (as well as the Windows file system). For that reason, it might be good to stay away from it, unless you are integrating with those elements. Needless to say, it's also one of the words that some of us spell differently. ;) What might work well for articles as 'Add to Reading List', where you intend to read them later. -- David Drucker Vancouver, BC da...@drucker.ca Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Best practise for adding items to comparison tool
Hi Allison, RE: Overall Comparison Considerations The comparison system has to work in the specific ecommerce environment and it's constraints. So, you'll want to consider: - how does site performance change as the number of items increases? - how many facets are you displaying in the comparison? And, what are the display options? - will it result in a static matrix? Or, will it provide further interaction, say, sorting by a facet? - can the selection of items span several pages - I.e., you can select items while paginating through 5 search result/gallery pages? You'll want to 'carry over' some reminder of what's been selected so far. - in the space provided for the matrix, there is an information design challenge for displaying diverse values. For instance, Consumer Reports has their grading system constant across all product types. Or, Edmunds.com accommodates some values that are numeric, some yes/no, some paragraph-length. - Does the matrix include all product attributes? If not, say so and let people view details. - do they have to make detailed selections before comparing (Edmunds)? Or, can they select all from a gallery page (Best Buy)? My ecommerce experience has been that there is a performance threshold to weigh against maximizing the number of items. That was typically the independent variable in how many items could be compared. (I've noticed that 4 is a common number to compare, but it's not as if those sites tell us why they chose 4.) Also, assuming people are on a path-to-purchase, what are the next steps and how obvious are they? Edmunds let's you add and remove cars to continue the comparison ad nauseam, but they're not selling. - Can they print/export the results? - can they go back to the original category/results? - can they add-to-cart/purchase from there? - Can they view more details on all/one item(s)? Finally, while most comparison selectors are on gallery pages, some product pages offer related items for comparison from there. This preselects items, but it accommodates scenarios where people land on a product page from a referrer or search engine deep link. Hope this helps. -Jay On Tue, 8 Sep 2009 10:32:43, alison austin amausti...@yahoo.co.uk wrote: What's the general view: is it best to limit the number of items you can add using compare functionality or better to allow an unlimited number?
