[IxDA Discuss] A suggestion to this mailing list

2009-08-20 Thread Andreas Hesse

Dear IXDA
I must say I think this list is not up to standards. If we're talking
IxD and UX here then I wonder why the emailings are not categorized in
any way.
There should be a bunch of checkboxes upon signing up, where you
decide what topics you'd like to recieve thread-openings about.

There are numerous options...

Thanks

[IxDA Discuss] User Information Gathering & Relationship Management (Registration Processes that are less of a bother and other ways)

2009-07-19 Thread Andreas Adamec
Hi there,
I'd like to invite you guys to share opinions, methodologies,
experiments, examples of successful ways of getting the user's
information through a registration process or other (more playful)
ways.

I'm preparing a case study and later a guide for a standarded
internal registration process and try to look at it from every
possible angle.

Your thoughts are gonna be highly appreciated.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] What music for interaction designers

2009-03-02 Thread Andreas

Dear all,
For some years now the talented people at Intergalactic FM have been
supplying my ears with steady stimulus and unsurpassed inspiration.
They are based in Rotterdam and their 3-in-1 stream goes 24/7, no
advertising (except for stylistic ones for themselves), no talk just
quality music, if you're into

1: Electronics
2: Retro/ Disco
3: Ambient

.. that's right, you can always switch around between the three.

The address is.. and a warm applause to
www.intergalacticfm.com

Various players, embeds, itunes links etc. are to be found at
www.intergalacticfm.com/players

Hope you all like it as much as I do - and don't forget to donate!
Cheers,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Help on User profiling and Persona

2008-12-06 Thread Andreas Ringdal
Does your company/client/organization have any existing statistics
that is relevant to your task? Get hold of as much relevant
background information as possible.
If this is a studen project, contact various printer manufacturers,
explain your situation and ask if they have any statistics they are
willing to share.

You mention working men/women, but not if they are at work while
printing. There is a huge difference in operating a printer at home
and at work. (When was the last time you printed a 104 page report
using your 4 year old inkjet at home?)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Is Auto-Scrolling Good?

2008-12-01 Thread Andreas Ringdal
A solution to the variable scroll speed might be to add a speed
indicator along the "scrolling edge".

When the scrolling starts, place a scrolling indicator just below the
cursor, and let the users move position the mouse a little further
up/down on the indicator to adjust the speed.

Downside: users might have a hard thime figuring out what that thingy
underneath the cursor is.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How do you keep track of suggested changes to interaction designs?

2008-11-20 Thread Andreas Ringdal
It is not a great solution, but we keep it all in our internal wiki
(Confluense).
Mostly it is just minor changes to existing product interfaces.
We keep one page for each change with comments below the main page.

When we have multiple versions of the same design, the original is
usually posted in the main page, and changes in the comments below.
Luckily Confluence supports threaded comments and autogenerates
thumbnails of the posted images.

As I said, it is not a great solution, but it is a functioning
solution.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interesting drag interface

2008-11-07 Thread Andreas Ringdal

My initial thought of the site was, fancy but utterly useless. Then,
after reading the previous posts in this thread, I realised that the
author of the site had done (nearly) everything the way it should be
done.

Let's apply some quick and dirty JJ Garret to his site

The strategy plane:
Site objectives: Sell me in order to bring in more work
User needs: Determine how good I am.

The scope plane:
Must present what I have done in the past and that I can apply
various techniques of flash

The structure plane:
The interaction design might not be great related to "regular"
sites, but he as already defined the site as a show-case for what he
is capable of, thus it requires a different approach to interaction
design than regular sites.
Information Architecture: There is not much information, but what is
important is available right at the start (after a lengthy intro that
is).

Skeleton plane:
On the first screen the most important elements are ordered in a way
that makes them easy to find and click.

Visual plane:
The playfull UI elements underlines the fact that this is not a
regular site and changes the expectations of the users and opens
theri minds for alternative experiences.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] User Initiated Save vs. Implicit Save

2008-10-16 Thread Andreas Ringdal
I think Confluence from Atlassian has solved quite nicely.
When I edit or create a new page in the wiki, the content is saved in
the background. If I navigate away from the form, and return at a
later stage to either the page I was editing or the new page for, the
present a notice above the form with the following text: "A new page
you were adding on 2008-10-17 07:10 called %u201Ctestpage %u201D was
not saved. Do you want to resume editing or discard it? " (Resume
edit and discard is behaving as link buttons). Unless I explisitly
clicks the save button, it is not committed to the live content of
the wiki.

The question here shold not be if you should save the data, but
rather how should you handle the process. With the stability of
browser and the possibilities of accidental navigating away from the
form, you should save all data to a temporary storage.

The challenge is how to present the user with automatically saved
data.
Should the entered data be available to other users, or just the user
who has started to enter it into the form?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Trends : According to google insight people are lesser and lesser interested in usability

2008-09-27 Thread Andreas Ringdal
>From the Google page "What does these numbers mean"

"The numbers on the graph reflect how many searches have been done
for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done
on Google over time. They don't represent absolute search volume
numbers, because the data is normalized and presented on a scale from
0-100; each point on the graph is divided by the highest point, or
100. The numbers next to the search terms above the graph are
summaries, or totals."

Does that mean that fewer people are interested in usability, or that
late adopter of internet search has less interest in usability than
early adopters?

Remember the users are searching, you do not yet know if they are
finding.
Based on the numbers Kordian presented you don't even need a button,
but remember the button is a clear indicator of what the text box is
for, and it draws attention to the search box.

Example of search box without button:
http://thenoisychannel.com/
The search box on that page i discovered by accident when looking for

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search Box Guidelines

My first thought was to loose the radio buttons and search intranet

Advantage: Data on the intranet (internal information) is always
presented to the users.

Disadvantage: you might have to learn the users what they are
searching when they are using the search box on your site.

I like it as a concept, but I don't think it will be usable for the
web anytime soon. The navigation elements move avay from the original
location. I wantet to click "The click ergonomy" and ended up on the
Click history page.

With some research and testing on mouse movements from element to
element it will become a lot better. Right now it requires a clear
path between all the various navigation elements.

Any thoughts regarding how to put a no click interface to use?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Next & previous button order

2008-09-16 Thread Andreas Ringdal
Johan Sjöstrand and Jeff Howard have some good points. "Do we really
need the back button?"
A multi page form should have a (clickable) index indicating the
various steps in the form, and a next button to go to the next page.

--

The next and previous buttons do not behave as "action buttons",
but as navigation buttons, and it therefor is more natural to go to
the next page by clicking on the right-hand side. In left to right
cultures that is.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Native vs. Non-native look-and-feel

2008-09-10 Thread Andreas Ringdal
I think it is more important to keep the core functionality and the
process of using the application the same on all platforms.

I use Evernote both on Windows, OS X, iPhone and Web, and what really
annoys me is that it behaves differently. When creating a new note,
the windows version automatically adds the first line as a title and
to tagg the note, I have to open a separate window. The OS X and
iPhone versions both have separate fields for title and tags.

My opinion: make the application look native, but behave the same
way.
