[IxDA Discuss] Do you know a good HTML person?
Could anyone here recommend a professional HTML coder available for a small gig? An interesting (really) bootstrap startup developing an enterprise social software platform is looking for an HTML person. We have UI/Interaction design, thank you - that would be me - but we need some HTML done by a person who knows his CSS and JQuery. Both social gaming and enterprise interfaces are possible good backgrounds (told you it's interesting). It's going to look great on his/her portfolio. Re: [IxDA Discuss] help text in input fields - bad?
No research, but some common sense from a product point of view. Google custom search is the default suggested by Google. Google does not encourage changing it. Don't read too much into it - don't assume they considered changing it. Google custom search usually replaces internally maintained search. In that case, the prompt's usefulness is in alerting users to expect different results format. Even if it discourages searches, consider that when replacing internal searches in a working website, implementing Google search may increase the success rate of searches considerably (this is easy to measure). This may outweigh some marginal difficulty (and one that's tough to measure). Last comment: Google custom search is a particularly obnoxious display (what with the oversized color logo and a symbol character to top!). A short message, containing only an instruction or sample search, may work better (assuming it disappears on any focus). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Browse or Search
I once did a music web site (now defunct: http://tinyurl.com/ycofvkq). Alpha listings are a great way to prove that the website offers more artists than you can shake a stick at. People scan lists to evaluate the general quality of the offerings. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Expressing levels of achievement/reputation (eBay stars)
We all know eBay stars - different stars denote accumulated reputation or feedback score. I like Ebay's colored star icon system because it's more elegant and more subtle than, say, a five star hotel/restaurant system. It's more like a karate belt color ladder. But can levels be expressed in yet subtler ways? What other graphic elements can be used? Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Recruiting cold calling: pitfalls?
I found that talking to existing clients is very helpful to understanding the product. I never needed to give an incentive - most clients, though busy people, are excited that someone consults with them. However, calling mature professionals with good public speaking skills, I found that 15 questions isn't a short list; if the rapport is there, it will quickly develop into a conversation. Which is great! I just don't kid myself about the time it takes. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Editing of profile details
One approach to editing profile details (title, status, address, mission statement, etc.), is to edit them in place, AJAX-style. An alternative approach is to use a specialized page, tab or pop-up, with some variation of a submit action. I am designing an interface for a project in a corporate environment, and I find that as the data gets more complex, it's not easy to choose the correct approach, or to mix and match. When i look for examples from teams I follow (Facebook and LinkedIn come to mind) it seems to me they have similar headaches. I am looking for an example of a very slick web 2.0 solution in a mainstream platform with moderately complex data (managing lists of items, not just name-and-address-and-photo). I am also wondering what can these days be assumed about the familiarity of the general public with Facebook and LinkedIn (for example). Would you require editing on-place in the way Facebook does, if you were designing for different age groups? Your thoughts? Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)!
