Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sketching before the Wireframes
Definitely sketch first. Always paper before pixels. Then if you can, share those sketches with someone in your team and get their feedback. Then move to digital. Even if you don't share them with anyone, use them as a cheat sheet for your digital mockups. If anyone asks, tell them it's an interface outline. You need to know exactly what data you're working with BEFORE you start pushing pixels, else you'll waste far more time. I wrote an article about sketching that might be of some help: http://www.uxbooth.com/blog/tools-for-sketching-user-experiences/ Cheers, Jason R. http://jasonrobb.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] [JOB] UX design / Visual design / Front-end dev. (Generalist role) in Boston, at Language International, full-time.
The company I work for, Language International, needs help. We need another designer to join our small team. We know who we want. Check out the full job post here: http://jasonrobb.com/2009/10/17/work-with-me/ MUST HAVE SKILLS... - PROTOTYPING Able to build rapid prototypes (regardless of technology, i.e. Paper, HTML/CSS ) ideally you can take a design from sketches to markup. - MARKUP AND STYLE Capable and comfortable implementing designs with HTML/CSS. - DESIGN TASTE Has great taste in design. Cite sources of inspiration or influence: i.e. Books, blogs, etc - SEO FUNDAMENTALS Understand the essentials of SEO, good content + good markup + linking strategy = good SEO. - UNAFRAID OF CODE Understand how back-end technology works. The point is, you cant be scared to work around and within PHP. PREFERRED SKILLS... - UX DESIGN AND RESEARCH Solid skills in experience design. You can expect to sketch interfaces and user flows. Would be great if you have experience with research as well. - MANAGE AND MEASURE UX Can manage and measure the success of design. You should have experience defending your design choices with business and user goals. - EXPERIENCED WITH NON-DESIGNERS Has worked directly with Business folks, Engineers, and Designers (i.e. You should be comfortable working with designers and non-designers alike). Re: [IxDA Discuss] Just Because You Can Innovate Doesn't Mean You Should
Daniel, I'm glad you brought up the micro-interaction of auto-save in Gmail. Consider the following: http://skitch.com/jasonrobb/b5nsy/active-passive-innovation In Gmail for instance, there are some features that are obvious. The undo button is an obvious innovation, whereas the auto-save feature is more of a passive innovation since you probably wouldn't notice it's there. It's almost a commodity now. Dave, the light bulb that Edison invented was an innovation on the light bulb that Joseph Swan started working on some 30 years earlier. (And 20 people had tried to invent the light bulb before those two.) But Edison made it economically viable. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Screen Resolution Sources
Hi Sean, I don't have any resources for screen resolution other than what's available for MY personal and company sites through analytics. If you don't have analytics, and are basically guessing what your customers will be able to see... First, I'd encourage you to try a fluid layout (em-based not pixel-based width): http://www.alistapart.com/articles/fluidgrids/ It takes a very, very small amount of math. Which is easy to remember (basically target ÷ context = result). But if you're still insisting on a pixel-based layout, here are some links that might be helpful to your decision to go big (or go home ;) %u2022 Cameron Moll (circa 2006) on Optimal width for 1024px width -- http://www.cameronmoll.com/archives/001220.html %u2022 Jakob Neilson (2006) on Screen Resolution and Layout http://www.useit.com/alertbox/screen_resolution.html %u2022 Roger Johansson (2005) Fixed or fluid width? Which is why I'd suggest you try an elastic layout before locking into a pixel width. Or at the least, specify a max- and min-width in pixels for your outermost container. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Just Because You Can Innovate Doesn\'t Mean You Should
Awesome ideas, David and Hugh! I'll run through and answer your questions, since I generally agree with everything you've said... Q: In the end, if the client doesn't implement the design%u2014how successful is it? A: It's only successful if the innovation is pulled off the shelf some day and implemented. Q: Do you think innovation is easy? A: Designing innovation is not easy. Implementing it can be easy. But it has its own difficulties. Q: How do you gauge a clients ability or need to innovate? A: Not sure, would love to hear the kinds of questions others are asking to extract the innovatability of a company at a given time. (Yea, sorry, I know that's not a word!) Q: Have you ever delivered an innovative design that wasn't implemented? A: Yes, plenty of times. In the case of the first question, we acknowledged that we didn't have the resources to implement the idea, so we shelved the idea. Then a few months later, once we had more time/money, we pulled out the plans, refreshed out memories, and continued with the innovative design. Q: Have you ever tried to convince a client not to innovate? A: Typically, I have to convince MYSELF not to innovate. My blue sky ideas of a utopian web site frequently end with my realization that I'm only 1 person, and if I want to get anything done, I need to break off a smaller chunk. Q: Or are you frustrated by clients who won't let you innovate? A: Not any more. I used to be frustrated, but sometimes they're just not convince-able. Would be interested in hearing war stories/ammunition against the won't let me innovate case. Thanks for sharing, great food for thought! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Just Because You Can Innovate Doesn\'t Mean You Should
What if we think of innovation in terms of potential and active states? If you have an innovative idea, but don't have the resources to implement it, it still may be innovative. But if it's not implemented, it's just a potential for innovation. If you put that great idea into action, and implement the design, it's active innovation. Does this change anything? Am I just stating the obvious? Re: [IxDA Discuss] User reaction to a lack of ratings and reviews
Adrian, With regards to hiding ratings: Zappos, for instance, hides the ratings on the search results page, until the shoe has been rated. http://www.quicksnapper.com/files/1946/5248341084A5DFBFF1CD89_m.png Being consistent for the sake of consistency isn't a good reason to be consistent. Todd et al., Awesome! I'm so glad you asked this question... The current state of my company culture allows me literally no time for testing people outside of our organization. [IxDA Discuss] Education for a team of none
Hi all, Over the past few years as a web designer Ive noticed a lack of education specific to people like me. I wrote an article on the subject, and I implore you to read it. http://jasonrobb.com/2009/06/18/education-for-a-team-of-none/ In my article, I use an example of building robust personas. I recently saw Jared Spool present on the topic. He did an awesome job. But I walked away with a familiar, looming question: Can robust personas be built by a single designer, with limited time and resources? It's not limited to personas. My argument is the same for design patterns, mental models, usability testing, and so on. The examples I'm seeing are always from the point of view of someone with plenty of resources. That's not always the case. It's not in mine. And I'm sure I'm not alone. There isn't enough mindshare between solo designers in our industry. I'd like to raise awareness and get people talking about their processes. If you are a solo designer without a team of experts, I hope you'll start talking about your design processes and sharing with the rest of the community. Thank you so much for your time. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Wireframing with pencil and paper
I'm a graphic designer at the core, and this is exactly how I develop experience strategies/designs. I work at a small startup company which means I'm only an arms reach away from the only 3 people whose opinions matter. I think that's a fortunate thing, that others aren't so lucky to have. Reason I say that, is because if I had to communicate via email or phone, it might not work as well. I could be wrong, it's just that I haven't tried it. Some of my sketches are in my portfolio, if you're in to that sort of thing: http://jasonrobb.com/i/jasonrobb-resume-portfolio.pdf The sketches, indeed, aren't submitted to any clients but the stakeholders in our startup. [IxDA Discuss] UX Generalists Specialists
Hi all, I'm fairly new to UX/IX design, and I've seen so many people talk about the benefits/shortcomings of generalists vs. specialists. I had to take a swing at it, and I think I've cleared up the real issue: Instead of just asking which is better we should be asking which is better for our business? Too many times the UX civil war seems to revolve around broad skills or narrow skills, and as far as I can tell, it doesn't matter which skill set you have. Both are valuable and necessary. What matters are the circumstances you and your company are in and what you do to adapt to them and make the best out of them. I've written a few words (600) about this idea. Hope you'll take a few minutes to read my full post, and comment here or there: http://jasonrobb.com/2009/05/22/ux-generalists-specialists/ Thanks a lot, I appreciate you taking the time to read even this. =) Cheers, Jason Robb http://jasonrobb.com http://uxboston.com http://twitter.com/jasonrobb Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] [Conan Team to IXDA members]: Paying job posts to fund IXDA activitiesother issues
Hm, interesting. Here are my 2 cents. 1) I wouldn't pay, although I've never needed to post a job, so my opinion is a bit irrelevant and not the target audience. 2) Not sure what this means. As someone who is *looking* for a job, I'd like to see those positions as well as full-time stuff. 3) Portfolio service = totally worthless. I would never use it, I have my own portfolio on my website and in a PDF. Although a place to post it or reference it might be helpful. For instance, if someone (an employer) is looking for a UX designer (me) then they could search the Coroflot profiles for UXD's and find me, hopefully. That's how it could help me. 4) How *outside* of IxD are you thinking? IA, UX, visual design, front-end coding, things like this that overlap areas of my job would be acceptable. I've never heard of a User Experience designer for Architecture, but I suppose if they're looking for someone in IxD/UX then that would be fine to post in the same stream. Additionally, I agree the totally-free philosophy should remain intact. I'd suggest keeping this somehow. Hi Juan, Certainly you should check out Luke W.'s book on form design: http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/books/webforms/ I've read it. The guidance you're looking for is in there! Are your form labels really long? If so you might want to stick with single-column (labels on top) layout. Labels on top are the fastest way to get people through a form. With two columns, people have to jump from column to column to read the label and fill in the input. Based on what you've mentioned, labels on top might be your best option. I'll let you be the judge of that though! =) Best, Jason R. -- Jason Robb ja...@jasonrobb.com http://jasonrobb.com http://uxboston.com http://twitter.com/jasonrobb http://twitter.com/uxboston . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] UX Book Club Boston (with Steve Krug) - May 6th
Hi everyone, Long time lurker, first time poster. I started a branch of the UX Book Club (http://uxbookclub.org) here in Boston (more info: http://uxboston.com) a few months back. Our 2nd meeting is this coming Wednesday, May 6th @ 7PM at Betahouse (http://betahouse.org). We're reading Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug. Best part is, Steve has agreed to come. Please RSVP at the Yahoo! Upcoming page, because space is limited to 20-30: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2512056 If you can't make it, you can follow http://twitter.com/uxboston for live tweets during the event. I'll hopefully have a few copies of Subject to Change to raffle off, which will be the next book we read and discuss for the month of June. (Pardon the late notification, but I just arranged this event this week. I'm spontaneous like that. You'll get used to it. ;) Thanks, Jason Robb ja...@jasonrobb.com http://twitter.com/jasonrobb http://jasonrobb.com http://uxboston.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] The role of detailed footers
Me too, I'd love to hear more about this UI pattern from someone who's tested it. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sixth sense from MIT labs
See Andy Rutledge's article on this talk. http://www.andyrutledge.com/blind-leading-the-blind.php#fragment-4 He claims this talk demonstrates a measure of irresponsibility, misrepresented facts, and shallow thinking... Definitely worth a read! Cheers, Jason R. www.jasonrobb.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Two Delete behaviors - one type of label?
I like Dev Yamakawa's approach by putting an ellipsis after the word Delete... You could also do something like Delete now and Delete? and ask for confirmation after clicking the Delete? button. Just a suggestion. Though I do believe the best thing to do is to have an undo button after you've clicked.
