Re: [IxDA Discuss] Represented (designer\'s) Model
Not sure if anyone pointed you to it, but Indi Young published a book entitled Mental Models http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/books/mental-models/last year. I don't know if it's quite the same thing you're looking into, but the name sparked my memory. -a Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Represented (designer\'s) Model
There is lots of research on this. I would start with a nice little paper by my own supervisor, Stephen Payne: Payne, S. J. (1991) A descriptive study of mental models. Behaviour and Information Technology, 10 (1),3-21 Plus he has a chapter in the book HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks by John Carroll (might be worth reading the rest of this) called Mental models: the very ideas You could go back further and read the seminal works too. Two books were published in 1984, one by Johnson-Laird and the other by Gentner and Stevens both titled, Mental Models as you're doing doctoral research. There are more concise summaries that may tell you all you need to know but it is better to go to the primary source if you can. I understand that someone else recently published a book under the same title/ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Represented (designer\'s) Model
Hi, I am currently engaged in doctorate research enquiring deeper into what Alan Cooper et al describe as 'represented models', and what Don Norman describes as a 'designer's model' for a PhD practical project. Could the community suggest some seminal books, journal articles and papers I should read? I have read 'About Face 3' and 'Design of Everyday Things'. Keywords I suggest would be: represented models, designer's models, design models, conceptual models, user's mental models, user's models, system images. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
