Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo-Conf] Poll: Change FOSS4G structure to have some continuity of organization and management

2022-02-08 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hi all,

I prefer option 1.

If this poll was asked just after FOSS4G Seoul 2015, I would have selected
option 2 without any hesitations.

However I now realize that I, LOC members, and local community had learned a
lot by going through the difficulties of preparing the event altogether. That
experience was very unique, invaluable and is now one of driving force of
vibrant activity of OSGeo Korean chapter. Community driven FOSS4G with help
from PCO is not so bad model, I think.

+2 for considering change

There's definitely room to consider continual improvements for the conference
process, as the world, and our community has evolved considerably over the last
few years. No easy solutions, but lots to think about.

Eli starting this thread with an "informal poll" makes complete sense. The
Committee is simply doing it's job of helping the Board to manage and promote
the conference activity. We don't get to make decisions by ourselves, but
generating ideas is certainly part of the mandate. And, as others have said, if
the board disagrees with a proposal/idea, they do not have to approve it.

+2 from me

Everyone is welcome to participate in the conversation about changes to the
organisation of FOSS4G, then the Conference Ctee should vote and make a
recommendation (or recommendations) to the Board and the Board should decide.

Our organisational model is that the charter members elect the board and the
board then makes decisions on their behalf, if CM’s don’t agree with board
decisions they have the option to vote in a new board, we do not have a direct
voting or referendum system where CM’s are consulted on individual decisions.

Hi Maxi,
Thanks! I completely agree with those type of changes indeed. It makes sense we
have a list of scenario’s forward and have a vote on that by the community.

For what the membership of the conference committee is concerned, I left simply
because of the supposed/imposed barrier of not having been a conference chair,
although I didn’t agree with that at all. Didn’t feel like fighting over it
though. It would be better to make membership voluntary just like other
committees. Possibly approved by the board or charter members.

Cheers,
Jeroen

Dear Jeroen,
Thanks for your considerations.

I wasn't proposing to extend the evaluation of proposals to the whole
community. I understand a dedicated committee should do this (even though I
believe a part of the evaluation of a proposal could be assigned by votes of
the community, maybe 10%?).

My point is that decisions of changing the organisation of the FOSS4G cannot be
done without the involvement of the whole community. It's not about changing
the evaluation process, it's about deciding for example to have a fixed
location, to completely leave it to an external company, to pay the committee
members to do it, to have it online or in person, to cancel the global and keep
only to local conference...

Another point is that so far there's the assumption that only organizer of
previous FOSS4G have the competence to understand technical matters. That's
quite aleatory and in no other committee there is such an entry barrier... If
you didn't play in NBA you cannot be a good coach? Can a government self-elect
his members? What about innovation, new ideas and other experiences, or we're
just close in our FOSS4G past events experience... Because only if you run a
global conference you have the competence...

Sorry to be long, and this is not personal at all, I just like being inclusive
and have empowered participatory approach..

All the best,
Maxi

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] My feelings about board elections

2017-10-30 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hello All,

Thanks for your comments and sharing your thoughts through private email and
this list. At first I should admit that my tone was somewhat aggressive and
tough. Sorry for that.

For the first point, I just wanted to have OSGeo better represent regional
distributions. If new board members agree with this and can fix it, that’s ok.
I believe I raised proper concern on this.

For the second point, I’m impressed with other’s tolerant and practical
approach. Just like I’m asking you that there’s another region outside of
Europe and NA, I should admit that there’s another culture different from mine.
I still can’t understand the situation however there’s something I should
accept without understanding. If board can set up new board election process,
that will be great.

Unlike many other’s speculation, Jeff is one of my best friend in this
community. So, it was so painful for me to have written down something against
him.

Good luck to all.

[OSGeo-Discuss] My feelings about board elections

2017-10-29 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

First of all I'd like to give my sincere congratulations to newly elected board
members. Here I want to share some of my feelings around this board elections.

1. Needless to say all new board members are deserved to win the election.
However as a whole, now we have all WHITE board of directors only from Europe
and North America. We've talked about the importance of diversity and
inclusiveness many times so far, however the reality is like this. Please don't
get me wrong. I'm not writing this because of my failure in an election. Being
nominated and encouragement to run the election was just great honour to me.
For me as Asian, one of most shocking and disappointing moment in this election
was Venka's failure in an election. Venka has contributed so much to Asian
community over the last 2 years. His contributions and activities reached out
not only to Japan but also to Thailand, Vietnam, India and sometimes to Korea
as well. He also put so much efforts organizing FOSS4G Asia this year. And I
know as a former board member how he restlessly carried out his duty as
president of OSGeo. And finally he failed! I know he didn't answer to some of
quesitons to nominees during the election period. Ok, it’s excuse however he
and I was being tied up with handling a urgent issue in community. Anyway I and
other Asian friends are so shocked that he was not elected! I bet other Asian
members share the same feeling. The result gave the clear meaning to Asian
community, "If Venka can't be a board member of OSGeo, nobody can be forever
from Asia." I already saw many complaints and discouragement in Asian
community. I believe regions other than Europe and NA have the rights to be
reprensented failry. So, I'd like to ask new board members to fix this kind of
wrong representation of board configuration by adopting new election rules.

2. I believe Jeff McKenna's ambiguous behaviours around election period made
both him and OSGeo untrustworthy. I don't want to mention again here some of
concerns over him in detail during the election. One thing I'd like to point
out is his un-withdrwal from board election after disclosing the results.
Nothing personal, Jeff. Actually I tried to accept and understand this
situation so many times for a couple of days, but I failed to accept. We're not
the children in the kindergarten! How can it be happened? The last thing I did
as a former board member was approving the motion, "This board election is
valid." I was able to block the motion however I approved the motion. Because I
accepted his withdrawal as sincere one and trusted him. I'm feeling my good
intention was being betrayed. I know I don't have any rights now to change my
previous decision and I don't want to criticise someone here. New board, this
case cleary has shown that there's big loophole in our election process. If
OSGe can't fix it, OSGeo will lose trust and credibility. Board, you need to
bear in mind that there's already bunch of sign of loosing trust from community.

Many mentioned that OSGeo is run by Do-ocracy. I believe the basis of Do-ocracy
is recognizing of someone's work and trust. If someone's hardwork is not
recognized and acknowledged fairy, who will want to jump into the matters to
fix it? And if someone can't trust the organization, who wants to put their
precious time and efforts to untrustworthy one?

If OSGeo lose the trust, it will lose everything. OSGeo is just shell.

Best regards,
신상희

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Costly FOSS4Gs

2017-10-18 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hello Ravi,

Here are my answers to your questions.

1. To run international FOSS4G we need much money as described by many
2. We have only 2 revenue sources from international FOSS4G to meet the running
cost, one is from registration, the other is from sponsors.
3. Now we want to have more affordable registration fee. And then we need to
increase sponsorships.
4. Many sponsors are commercial companies, sometimes from government bodies.
5. To increase sponsorships from companies, I believe we need to make
international FOSS4G more business friendly to ensure our sponsors that they
are getting benefits from their sponsoring/investments.

I can share interesting story here in Korea. Korean R user group will have
their annual conference( https://onoffmix.com/event/115611 ) 10 days later.
Actually there was some registration fee for the conference. However it’s now
free for online pre-registration because of large sponsorship from Microsoft
Korea. Yes, from MS!

But.. now that this has come to a boil..

Hello all

A significant group who have possibly not yet chimed in on this issue are the
commercial organizations who sell GFOSS support and development. I presume that
FOSS4G is one of their best opportunities to get new business.

I know there have been recent discussions/disagreements on this list about how
far OSGeo should promote commercial organizations. However, these companies are
the crucial element in GFOSS adoption in many larger public- and private-sector
bodies. Many simply will not entertain GFOSS without commercial support, many
believe the old myth that open source means no support, and many simply will
not accept the risk of GFOSS without that support.

My point is that GFOSS would not have anything like the market penetration it
now does without commercial companies offering open-source support and
development. As I say, I stand to be corrected, but FOSS4G surely enables them
to persuade others to migrate to GFOSS, which is to the whole community's
benefit.

Thanks

After reading them, I have 3 questions:
= One to Sanghee:
I really like your personal review of the last 2 years as a Board member. Not
just fun parts, but also some harder times.
Could you please elaborate on the "Sometimes I saw the 'Desire to the
Innocence' from the community"? I simply don't quite understand what you mean
by this.

I got this kind of feelings when sometimes saw antipathy against
commercial/proprietary services/products. Open source and
commercial/proprietary use the same language and tools to achieve same goal,
while paths are different.

= And one to all of you:
Some of you talk about being an inclusive organization.
For the geographical and probably cultural aspect of inclusiveness, do you
think the Board should have it's roots in as much continents / languages as
possible, so preferably 1 Board member from every continent (not counting for
Antarctica, ha!)

That might be ideal configuration if we could have board members not only from
different continents/languages but also from diverse domains.

Hi all,
Sorry for the late posting this. We Koreans enjoyed Chuseok holidays(Harvest
Festival) for 10 days.
Here are my manifestos mainly based on Steven’s questions.
• If you are standing for re-election - what roles have you taken in the last 2
years? what do you believe you have achieved and what has not worked as well as
you hoped?
Recalling last 2 years as a board, it was great honor for me to have served as
a board at OSGeo. However I also confess that it was not so pleasant experience
as I expected. And it required much time than I initially thought. There were
many endless debates and discussions all over the lists and I sometimes felt
helpless being stuck in the endless maze having realized that Director’s role
is setting Directions and sometimes time can fix the things.
At first please take a look at my manifestos from 2015 election

here for my roles for the last 2 years.
Over the last 2 years I tried to bring in different views to OSGeo horizontally
from Asia, vertically from business domains. Also I tried to put some efforts
to increase the relationship with UN. I’m not sure whether the results out of
my activities are satisfactory or not. I should admit that there were not so
many chances to represent Asia’s view at the board level. It’s unclear if it is
caused by Asia’s low activities or cultural/language barriers. However I’m very
happy to see many vibrant local activities in Asia region over the last couple
of years. As a businessman I tried to be more tolerant and permissive toward
issues around OSGeo. Sometimes I saw the ‘Desire to the Innocence’ from the
community. I’m confident we can grow more with more diverse views and
impurities. This is far from the hostile takeover. Regarding the UN activities,
I’m pleased to have played small set of role in developing a relationship with
UN. As a result of FOSS4G 2015 Seoul’s UN special session, UN Open GIS
Initiative officially started at the March of last year and I was designated as
Chair of TAG(Technical Advisory Group of UN Open GIS Initiative) at the
November of 2016. UN Open GIS Initiative is going well and hope UN could
complete their plan soon with full operation of their system based on open
source.
• All candidates - what role, specific topics would you like to work on within
the board and why? what do you hope to contribute and achieve in the next 2
years?
I believe too much devotions and affections to OSGeo will harm both me and
OSGeo. I’ll limit my contribution time to OSGeo and keep distances from the
Foundation as much as I love OSGeo. By doing this I think I can have the 3rd
person’s view toward the OSGeo. Anyway my first priority will be representing
Asia’s voice, that’s the reason why many of my Asian friends asked me to run
for the re-election. And as a non-developers and a businessman, I’d also like
to bring in users/practitioners/business mind to the board level. As our
foundation grow, we need to hear and reflect voices from members other than
developers. Tangibly to say I would like to see 2 things in the next 2 years.
First I’d like to see the successful completion of UN Open GIS Initiative,
which is at Spiral 1 and 2 stage now. Second, I will encourage Asian people to
actively jump in Foundation’s activity without shyness.
• If there was only 1 thing you could change in the next 2 years what would it
be?
Many core parts of OSGeo project is being developed during the spare time of
contributors. This could harm the sustainability of open source ecosystem and
our foundation. One of my interest is how to make virtuous cycle within our
ecosystem at least in our foundation, from developers to
users/practitioners/businessman. Now we see that many companies and
institutions get the profits/benefits using OSGeo projects. I believe some
parts of those profits/benefits should be returned to real developers in some
way. I have no concrete idea how to make this virtuous cycle work. But, I can
share my experience here in Korea. Recently my company and other 11 Korean open
source companies formed KAOS-G(Korea Alliance of Open Source Geospatial) as a
legal entity. Unlike OSGeo, KAOS-G is a company alliance to capture the value
by offering professional open source GIS to customers and return the profits,
contribute back to the communities. It’s just start and experience however I
expect some of good idea I can get from this KAOS-G activities.

I’ll update my manifestos to the wiki page soon.

May the FOSS & PEACE be with you & us all.

Kind regards,
신상희

Hi all,

Let’s go back to the legal issues. ESRI provides its clear guidelines about how
to use its products name, web link and logo here:

license agreement. I don’t think we can meet all the terms and conditions

It's different degrees of annoyance. I guess a brand-less and
link-less list of names of proprietary products would not be too
"offensive" for me (assuming spam filtering lets it pass) but I'd
still prefer an hidden keyword. Something that you never see written
but is recognized by the search engine to give you back a similar
software: you search for you get .

The "like Photoshop, only better" motto I like even when it contains
the name because it explicitly bashes it :)

Hi all,

I don’t want to flood the list once again. However I’m here to second the

Nominee: Stephen Mather - USA

Stephen has likely been most recently visible within the OSGeo community
as the founder and an ongoing contributor to OpenDroneMap -- for which
he received supportive grant funding in 2016; on which he has given
numerous workshops, presentations, and trainings since its development;
and through which he has partnered with a number of people and agencies
to use geospatial technologies for humanitarian efforts and other
applications in education, governmental work, and more.

Through mentoring within and beyond his professional role, Stephen
encourages the development of geospatial skills in a variety of folk,
and has recently served as a both mentor and a teacher in cooperative
programs in Musanze, Rwanda in addition to partnering with students at
the State University Zanzibar and the University of Rwanda on geospatial
projects.

Stephen is very active in outreach efforts; the last three years have
included workshops and presentations all over the globe on open source
geospatial software and systems (with a notable concentration on drone
systems/remote sensing applications) -- events include FOSS4G
(2017,2015,2014), State of the Map Africa (2017), FOSS4G Africa (2017),
State of the Map US (2016).

Technically, Stephen brings a wide range of expertise in across GIS
packages/protocols/libraries, remote sensing, and variety of programming
languages/libraries and is one of the co-authors of the PostGIS Cookbook.

I believe that with a combination of strong technical skills and a
dedication to outreach/education in diverse communities, Stephen has
brought a great deal to the OSGeo community for years, and will continue
to do so.

I feel that many realised the importance and necessity of CRM here in OSGeo.

So, if anybody could lead and volunteer for CRM selecting, setting-up and

Past FOSS4G attendees, FOSS4G and OSGeo sponsors are the main customers we

[OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G Seoul videos are available on the web!

2015-11-10 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

FYI, all the videos of FOSS4G Seoul are now available on the web.
https://vimeo.com/album/3605087 This might not be possible without great
contribution from Ms. Seoin Kim. Many thanks to Seoin! It took more than we
expected due to some technical problems in the videos. Anyway please enjoy it!

And as you know all the presentation files are linked at the conference
program.
https://www.meci.co.kr/societyevent/FOSS4G2015/program/program_1.asp?sMenu=pro1

Seoul team will link videos to conference program as well soon.

Best regards,

Thank you Maria and Venka for your great report!

FYI, GIS Resources already had reported the FOSS4G Seoul here:
http://www.gisresources.com/foss4g-2015-seoul-ends-successful/

And as far as I know GIM International will also cover the conference results
soon.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Renaming FOSS4G

2015-10-12 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear all,

After changing conference name, losing long-lasted brand value will be very
immediate and clear. However gaining the popularity of another firm brand will
take time and the effect will be vague.

Sometimes branding strategy doesn’t work as we imagine in our brain. Branding
is more about emotion than the logic. I don’t want to see OSGeo losing existing
loyalty only to try to attract new comers. We still use QWERTY, it's
inconvenient over DVORAK though.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo is becoming irrelevant. Here's why. Let's fix it.

2015-09-26 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

I think OSGeo is a body or carrier to carry the spirit of the open source to
the world. OSGeo is copper wire to transmit electricity to remote place.
Electricity had been there long before the invention of copper wire. We
invented copper wire to carry electricity to remote place and now realised
copper wire caused the many electricity loss because of rust or noise.

Back to Darrell’s question. Both need both. Just like body needs spirit,
electricity needs wire.

Back to Darrell’s question again. What will happen if OSGeo disappear? There
will not be official invitation to UN-GGIM conference by UN. There was a
meeting between UN Geospatial Section and OSGeo Board during the FOSS4G Seoul
for the future cooperation. And there might be no MOU between LH Corp(which has
16,000 employees in Korea) and OSGeo. Consequently the spread of open source
GIS in Korea might have been slowed down drastically. It’s just like losing all
your copper wire to connect your electricity to your device. What about the
Geo4All initiatives? I don’t think this wonderful achievement was possible
without OSGeo.

About OSGeo’ death, I’ll not be surprised or care much about whether OSGeo die
this evening. There’s nothing immortal. If OSGeo fully seed and spread the
spirit of open source, who cares if the body die or not. Spirit eventually bear
fruits. The real thing we should be worried about is the spiritual dead.

The problem of recent OSGeo is that it has grown too fast recently just like
teenagers. It looks like adult however still young and is not capable of doing
many things. It is just embarrassed with many sudden request and callings. So,
what should we do now to look after this teenager? First we need to be proud of
what it has accomplished so far and give it a cheer. And then sit down together
to talk about the future positively, if I’m a father.

Having seen the OSGeo since 2006, I believe we can be proud of OSGeo and it’s
achievements. I don’t think we need to reinvent the wheel once again and still
can fix it at the moment.

All the best,

신상희

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Question(s) for board candidates

2015-09-25 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear Darrell,

Here are my answers to your questions.

1) What do you see as OSGeo’s purpose today?
-> Promoting FOSS4G spirit world wide.

1a) What is OSGeo doing today that it shouldn’t be doing?
-> Giving too much organising burden to FOSS4G LOC. Eventually much burden to
LOC will damage the sustainability of FOSS4G in long term.

2) What do you see as OSGeo’s purpose in five years?
-> Being FOSS4G catalyst among various players around open source GIS

2a) What should OSGeo be doing in five years that it *isn’t* doing today?
-> Need to develop more formal and stable relationship with outer organisations
or players.

3) How do we get from (1) to (2)?
-> We need to increase the regional, gender, domain, sector diversity
inside/around OSGeo to accommodate to a new change. There might be new persons
to handle new issues properly and effectively.

3a) How can you help that?
-> I’ll add my perspective as a businessman from Asia. Also I could play a role
in developing relationship with UN based on my experience in organising UN
special session at FOSS4G Seoul.

All the best,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Board elections

2015-09-24 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

I’ll try to fill out my Manifestos and answer to several questions as a
candidate of Board of Director by the voting deadline. However there would be
possibility that I can’t do that.

Actually I’m too tired and exhausted now to think about something and write
down my thought there in English, that’s not my native language. Furthermore
I’ve been away from my family, especially from my lovely young daughter, for
more than 3 weeks because of FOSS4G Seoul. I’ve just come back from Seoul.

The reason why I’m sending this email is not for asking your understanding but
for informing you that my not responding your request automatically means I’m
ignoring you and OSGeo.

I’m not Robot and for me my health and my family are more important than OSGeo
BoD. I’ve got several private emails regarding this and I believe it’s more
efficient to express my thoughts/opinions publicly in this way.

All the best,

 Dear All,

I'm Heegu Park, a member of FOSS4G Korean Chapter and a member of FOSS4G
 Seoul 2015 Organizing Committee.

I want to nominate one person from South Korea.

*Name*: Byeong-Hyeok Yu (Korea National Park Service)
 *Country*: South Korea
 *Contact email*: b...@knps.or.kr

It is my pleasure to nominate Byeong-Hyeok Yu from USA, as an OSGeo Charter
Member. Byeong-Hyeok is one of few GIS specialists at Korea National Park
Service and has actively used Open Source GIS to analyze GIS data for the
environment or service in National Parks in South Korea. He has also taught
the way of using QGIS for National Parks to park rangers or Government
people. He made a guide book about QGIS applications for National Parks in
South Korea and it became official and published Government training
portal. I think his activities, contribution and passion for GIS made Korea
National Park Service's eyes open toward Open Source GIS.

He has actively participated in FOSS4G Korea event and socialized with
FOSS4G members. He has passion for GIS and Open Source and definitely He
will be a great asset for the foundation, as a Charter Member.

 Thank you very much,

 Best regards,

 Heegu Park

[OSGeo-Discuss] Some announcements regarding FOSS4G Seoul

2015-08-16 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

Ye! Only 4 weeks left until FOSS4G Seoul!!

All LOC members are very excited to welcome you here in Seoul and I’d like to
give you some notices regarding FOSS4G Seoul.

1. On-line registration(http://2015.foss4g.org/attending/registration/
http://2015.foss4g.org/attending/registration/) will be closed on 2nd
September. Any registrations received after this deadline will be considered as
On-site Registration. The On-Site registration fee will be the same as of
On-line's. However there will be possibility that On-Site registrants can't
collect conference kit(program book, t-shirt, 32GB OSGeo Live USB, Seoul MICE
card and etc), because FOSS4G Seoul team will order conference kits based on
On-line registration number. We’ll order more for the buffer definitely. But
it’s very hard to estimate how many will register on-site. So, it is highly
recommended to register in advance. Your early registration will be beneficial
to you and FOSS4G Seoul team as well.

2. We’ll have Gala Dinner on 16th September(Wednesday), the first day of main
conference. Please mark the date. The Gala Dinner is included in the full 3
days registration fee, so all participants can enjoy the night with all other
participants. This Gala Dinner will be co-hosted by FOSS4G Seoul and
SmartGeoExpo. So, this will be your great chance to get along with other
delegates from SmartGeoExpo event.

3. We’ll have Social Drinks on 17th September(Thursday) after completing full
Thursday program. We will provide a couple of drinks(soda, water, beer, coffee,
etc.,) with finger food at free at the lobby. This Social Drinks is sponsored
by KRIHS(Korea Research Institute of Human Settlement). For more information
about Social Events, please visit
here:http://2015.foss4g.org/programme/social-events/
http://2015.foss4g.org/programme/social-events/

4. For the efficient communication, please subscribe mailing

[OSGeo-Discuss] Announcing the UN special session program at FOSS4G Seoul

2015-08-13 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

I’m very pleased to announce the final program of “Open Source GIS for UN and
Developing Countries” special session at FOSS4G Seoul. For more details, please
take a look at here: http://2015.foss4g.org/united-nations-special-session/
This special session will be held on 16th September.

During the session, we’ll talk about the adoptions/experiences of open source
GIS in UN and developing countries. Also there will be panel discussions on how
to utilise the open source GIS for the sustainable development.

This special session might not be possible without Dr. Junyoung Choi’s great
efforts. I really appreciate his wonderful jobs.

See you all in Seoul.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Code of Conduct in Real Case

2015-07-09 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

I’d like to report updates on our discussion.

1. Regarding CoC offline discussion at FOSS4G Seoul, we may have discussion at
BOF meeting[0]. I believe Jeff already marked the timeslot there on 16th
September. If you need more timeslots, just add to the BOF wiki please. Also if
you want have any BOF meeting during FOSS4G Seoul, please add your plan to the
wiki page.

2. I removed my controversial(?) presentation from the main page. I think it
was too outdated and not so attractive. It’s now time to promote through
FOSS4G Seoul program itself. You may see new main page there[1].

Your attending and participation is very crucial to the success of FOSS4G
Seoul. Please register FOSS4G
Seoul(http://2015.foss4g.org/attending/registration/
http://2015.foss4g.org/attending/registration/) and meet up in Seoul
altogether!!

All the best,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Code of Conduct in Real Case

2015-06-24 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

It’s now time to apply OSGeo CoC(Code of Conduct)[0] in real case.

I was asked to remove a few slides from my presentation 7 Reasons why you
should come to FOSS4G 2015 Seoul”[1], which is at the main page of FOSS4G
Seoul, as being possibly offensive to women. Specifically to say, slide #6
(nude female in painting) and slide #20 (row of female models) are those
controversial ones.

I refused this asking immediately because I don’t believe my presentation
breach the OSGeo CoC and I don’t agree with that view.

However since this is not the first time asking me to remove those slides from
my presentation and OSGeo now have CoC, I think we’d better discuss this issue
more openly to reach conclusions.

I might be wrong and I’d like to hear other people’s opinion on this from all
around the world. Also I expect Conference Committee’s input as well, because
this is the matter of OSGeo conference.

I’m open to remove/amend/keep those slides after hearing other people’s
opinions on this. Also I believe it’ll be a great chance for OSGeo to learn how
to apply CoC in real cases.

*Sidenote for defending myself:
- Slide #6 is the part of Salvador Dali’s well known painting named “Lincoln in
Dalivision”[2]
- Slide #20 is the picture of famous girl group, Girls’ Generation(SNSD)[3],
which I believe as symbolic icon of wide spread of Korean culture(K-Culture)
in/around Asia.

All the best,

Sanghee

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Code of Conduct in Real Case

2015-06-24 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear All,

One thing I could say about the controversial #6 slide is that that is exactly
what Salvador Dali try to point out. I didn’t crop out the image intentionally
for ‘commercial.’ Image in #6 can be found in internet as well as art history
book.

If you visited Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain and stood just in front of that
painting, Dali’s ‘Lincoln in Dalivision’ just look like that, a nude female.
However if you move back to 10~20 meters away from that, now you can realise
the real meaning of that painting, that’s the portrait of Abraham Lincoln - the
president of USA.

I just used that image to stress the importance of long distance from the
object or sometimes from the too experienced ordinary culture.

I feel like this discussion is just like Dali’s painting.

 Hi Sanghee,

Thank you for taking this matter to the discuss mailinglist. My first
reaction when clicking the links from your post was, no problem, this is well
accepted from my european perspective and I do not directly see any offense
in them nor see any offense in other cultures. However, after looking at them
in context (in the slideshare presentation) this is my opinion.

 1. I don't understand the slides with the Dali painting. What do you want to
say with them? In my opinion they can be removed without downgrading the
 presentation.

 2. In my opinion; the slide with the header Culture showing the row of
female models will bring a better message with another picture. Currently I
interpret this slide as: Come to Korea for the beautiful women and I
believe that is not the message you want to send under the header Culture.

 3. There are a few slides with a lot of prominently displayed alcoholic
drinks, in one slide, it even looks like a drinking game. There are a lot
of cultures that are offended by that too. Simply removing them, again, would
not make your presentation worse, it would make it stronger.

 Final thought:

I agree with the request for removal/replacement but I think you should also
do something about the alcoholic drinks given this presentation holds a
prominent position on the main page for the foss4g event. This would make
your presentation stronger, because apart from this minor thing, it is an
interesting slideshow that has me interested in going to Seoul!

 So thank you for that!

 With respect, kind regards.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo-Conf] Code of Conduct in Real Case

2015-06-24 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hello Darrell,

I don’t think the reason why OSGeo has not so many women are caused by lacking
of CoC in OSGeo. According to the statistics National Centre for Education
Statistics[0], women have outnumbered men in American colleges for last 35
years. However women just selected another jobs rather than programming or
geospatial. It’s not our fault. I couldn’t recall any decisive moment that
lacking of CoC in OSGeo excluded participation of female except recent comments
from Kate.

It’s very similar in Korea as well. More than 45% of college students are
female. However they *DO* select another jobs instead of selecting programming
or geospatial. That’s why only around 10% are female in Korean Chapter. It’s
not because lacking of CoC.

If we want to be a broad community, a global community, also truly reflective
of the whole world, we’d better discuss how to effectively engage other
members from 3rd countries or developing countries. Do you know people in Asia
outnumber the other part of the world? Frankly to say I haven’t seen any much
effort from OSGeo to try to engage members from developing countries. Ah.. we
have travel grants once a year.

You said, If our FOSS4G community does not reflect the entire world, then we
are failing to engage all people, or worse, chasing some of them away.” Great!
And then what is the real relation between your phrase and CoC. Do you really
believe that imposing CoC automatically make OSGeo more welcomed organisation
to 3rd countries or developing countries members?

I feel that CoC is for white women in advanced countries. I know I might be
wrong. However whenever we talk about CoC, it’s all about sexy image or
something like that. It’s not about how to engage 2/3 of world population.

All the best,

Sanghee

I am absolutely, 100%, interested in having more women become engaged in
 FOSS4G.

Please don’t make such sweeping generalizations.

We are a broad community, a global community, but we are not truly reflective
of the whole world. We are largely white men from wealthy countries.

I *want* people engaged and passionate about FOSS4G. And that means making
sure have a community where *everyone* feels welcome. If our FOSS4G
community does not reflect the entire world, then we are failing to engage
all people, or worse, chasing some of them away.

A CoC is not a sign that we are dying, a CoC is a sign that we acknowledge
that we are insufficiently inclusive, and that we as a community will not
stand for that. It’s a sign that says “We do not want behaviors that drive
people away, behaviors that make our community *smaller*. We are a welcoming
community and we want *you* to be part of it.”Is a CoC sufficient to create
that community? Absolutely not, but it’s a step forwards. A flag in the
ground — a flag that says, “We welcome you!”

If we’re afraid of that, then we truly are a dying community, and one that
deserves to meet its quiet, irrelevant end.

We are not interested in more women to become engaged in FOSS4G. We are
interested in people engaged and passionate about FOSS4G. We don't care
about the sex, the colour, the religious or the operating system. Why are we
 interested specifically in more women?

There is a large and growing business behind FOSS4G, which is an huge
accomplishment of FOSS4G, that we should care and maintain. It is ok to have
some grey people with a strange piece of cloth knotted at the throat
 attending FOSS4G and moving around.

[OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G Seoul 2015 Conference Registration Opens

Hi All,

FOSS4G Seoul team is very pleased to announce that FOSS4G Seoul conference is
now open for registration. http://2015.foss4g.org/attending/registration/

This year’s International FOSS4G will be held in The-K Hotel, Seoul, 14-19
September, for the first time in Asia.

The annual FOSS4G conference is the largest global gathering focused on open
source geospatial solution. FOSS4G brings together developers, users,
decision-makers and businessmen from a broad spectrum of organizations and
fields of operation. Through six days of workshops, presentations, discussions
and code sprint, FOSS4G participants create effective and relevant geospatial
products, standards, human networks and business opportunities.

Early bird registration is just USD440 for 3 days of main conference, and
USD100 for half-day of top notch workshops from the world's best international
presenters. FOSS4G Seoul team has tried its best to keep the registration fee
as low as possible to encourage more people to attend the conference. Also
there is special rate for participants who reside in Low or Lower-Middle Income
Economies.

There is ‘Travel Grant Donation’ option in on-line registration page. 'Travel
Grant Donation' will be used for students from developing countries or

[OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G 2015 Call for Presentations/Papers/Workshops

2015-02-23 Thread Sanghee Shin
Dear all,

The International FOSS4G(http://2015.foss4g.org/) organising committee is
pleased to announce the Call for Presentations/Papers/Workshops for the 2015
conference to be held in Seoul, Republic of Korea (September 14th – 19th).

The annual International FOSS4G(Free Open Source SW for Geospatial) conference
is the largest global gathering focused on open source geospatial solution.
FOSS4G brings together developers, users, decision-makers and businessmen from
a broad spectrum of organisations and fields of operation. Through six days of
workshops, presentations, discussions and code sprint, FOSS4G participants
create effective and relevant geospatial products, standards, human networks
and business opportunities.

** Call for Presentations **
Deadline: 24th April

For complete details, please visit Regular Session CFP page,
http://2015.foss4g.org/programme/presentations/ .

After the deadline there will be a community voting mechanism to help select
the final program. We expect we could have around 200 presentations during the
conference showing the uses of open-source geospatial software in various
fields and benefits of open-source geospatial software. We will be having 6~8
parallel streams in a range of subjects from diverse fields. Each individual
presentations will be allowed about 25 minutes and 5 minutes for QA.

** Call for Papers(Academic Track) **
Deadline: 24th April

For complete details, please see the Academic Track CFP
(http://2015.foss4g.org/programme/academic-track/) .

Your contributions will be reviewed (double-blind) by a committee of geospatial
experts, who will assess the papers on originality and academic rigour, as well
as interest for the wider FOSS4G community. Academic Committee will make
efforts to get selected papers published in reputed academic journals.

And there will be “Student Awards” at the FOSS4G Seoul conference with
contribution from GeoCat’s €1,500, OSGeo’s $1,000 and FOSS4G Seoul LOC’s
$1,500. FYI, OSGeo will spend $10,000 for “Student Awards” at various FOSS4G
events(i.e. local, regional) for the year. More details about “Student Awards”
will be announced later.

** Call for Workshops **
Deadline: 23rd March

For complete details, please visit our Workshop
page.(http://2015.foss4g.org/programme/workshop/)

Workshops are half(4 hours) or full-day(8 hours) hands-on experiences with
participants following along with an instructor. Workshops will be run by
experienced members of the open source community, and sometimes by the actual
developers. As such, they are a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills or
take your first steps into the world of Open Source GIS.

Workshops are a very popular part of FOSS4G, and demand always outstrips
supply. We are looking for dynamic instructors on a variety of topics.

** Call for Posters/Call for Maps **
Call for Posters/Maps will be announced later with details.

We hope many proposals and submissions from all around the world.

Best regards,

Sanghee

[OSGeo-Discuss] Who do you want to meet as Keynote Speaker at FOSS4G 2015 Seoul?

2014-10-07 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hi all,

I've been very impressed with many recent discussions and debates on the future
of OSGeo and FOSS4G. Also I was very pleased to see many announcements on next
year's regional FOSS4G including FOSS4G Europe, NA and others. I think our
community is growing and growing very fast!!

Anyway one thing very clear is that International FOSS4G 2015 will be held at
Seoul, South Korea next year. To make International FOSS4G 2015 Seoul
successful one, the LOC is gearing up the preparation now.

We, the LOC, believe that presence of wonderful speakers could attract more
attendants not only from all around the world but also from Korea as well.

So, why don't you suggest us any speakers you want to see or meet at FOSS4G
2015 Seoul? If you suggest speakers with several lines of reasons of
suggestion, that might be appreciated.

After listing up your suggestions, we'll contact them one by one. You can
suggest speakers through to my email (shs...@gaia3d.com) or to FOSS4G 2015 LOC

it is my pleasure to nominate Steven Feldman [0] from London, UK for
 OSGeo Charter membership.

Steven has been involved in a combination of GIS, business and open

Nottingham University, a strategic advisor to Astun Technology,
chairman of geo.me Solutions and Exprodat Consulting and a board
advisor at OpenCage Data [0, 1].

Steven's most recent and substantial contribution to open source

Nottingham. At that event I started insightful discussions with him
about OSGeo future and long term sustainability, that continue to the

[OSGeo-Discuss] Seoul (South Korea) selected to host the 2015 international conference for Free Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G)

2014-06-04 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hi all,

Just like the announcement below, international FOSS4G 2015 will take place in
Seoul, South Korea.

Venue : COEX[0], Seoul, South Korea
Date : 14th ~ 19th, Sep, 2015.

As chair of the LOC, I feel honored and excited about organizing international
FOSS4G 2015 in Seoul for the first time in Asia.

There are lots of reasons you should come to Seoul next year not limited to
below.

First, you can meet differences. FOSS4G 2015 will be the first time event
outside of Roman alphabet world. You may meet different language, culture,
character and foods. These differences will inspire your imagination and
creativity. Cultural diversities in OSGeo will eventually enrich the OSGeo
structure and pipe the new fresh energy to OSGeo.

Second, you can see many business opportunities there in Asia. Asia will be the
next big market to open source GIS professionals, users, and companies. For
example, Korean government has just started new open source GIS RD project
with a budget of USD 9.6M. And the market size of Asian economies already
overwhelmed that of E.U. and U.S.A. and we’ve watched many emerging and vibrant
FOSS4G activities in Asia. However this market is still untapped in terms of
open source GIS. For this, we have a plan to organize ‘FOSS4G Asia Special
Session'

Third, you can expect one-shot-two-kill by attending FOSS4G 2015 Seoul. FOSS4G
2015 Seoul will be held in conjunction with Smart Geo Expo[1] at the same venue
from 21st to 23rd, Sep. Smart Geo Expo is one of the largest international
geospatial event in Asia. Last year, more than 80 companies institutions
including Samsung Electronics, Google, Sokkia, Trimble, Topcon, ESRI Korea,
Leica exhibited their products there in Smart Geo Expo. And more than 10,000
people visited exhibition booth and attended several seminars conferences.
International High-level(usually minister level) meeting is usually there. The
awesome thing is that Smart Geo Expo is total FREE!

For the success of FOSS4G 2015 Seoul, we definitely need your help support. I
would like to ask something to you.

At first, please share this info with others around you and create buzz!!

Second, if you have any awesome idea to make FOSS4G 2015 Seoul an awesome one,
don’t hesitate to contact me or the LOC. We created a dedicated list for the
FOSS4G 2015 - foss4g2...@lists.osgeo.org and you can join this list through
here [2].

Lastly please save and earmark some money for FOSS4G 2015 Seoul.

You will never get disappointed. Hope to see all of you in Seoul next year.

Cheers,

Sanghee

P.S.) I saw the news a few days ago that Gangnam Style got more than 2 billion
views at YouTube. Do you know the venue of FOSS4G 2015 Seoul is located at the
heart of Gangnam District, the hometown of Gangnam Style. Who knows you can
come across Psy around venue next year? Ha.

The OSGeo Korean Chapter is pleased to announce that we have been
selected to host the 2015 FOSS4G international conference. The
conference will be hosted in Seoul in September 2015, and is expected
to attract the leading developers, users and business people in the
open source geospatial community from Asia and all over the world.

Holding the FOSS4G conference, the biggest open source GIS event in the
world, for the first time in the Asia will bring countless benefits to
the region and provide geospatial communities, local businesses, and
wider society with a great opportunity to learn about the potential of
 open source geospatial technologies.

Sanghee Shin, CEO at Gaia3D and Representative of OSGeo Korean Chapter
explained his motivations for leading Seoul¹s bid to make Seoul the
starting point of a FOSS4G big bang extending the FOSS4G throughout the
region via this conference. He said, ³When I tried to introduce Open
Source GIS to South Korea in 2008, no one was willing to listen to my
opinions. However five years later, the Korean government has recently
launched a bid for an Open Source GIS RD project with a budget of USD
9.5m. This means that that Open Source GIS is set to become a key part
of the GIS landscape in South Korea. I¹m absolutely sure

Hi Cameron,

Yepp. We'll attend GISAS conference as a exhibitor at 30, April. And we have
another plan to show ourselves to other GIS related conference before FOSS4G
2009. If you send postcards to us, that would be very nice.

Do you want my address?

 Sanghee,
Is your event before FOSS4G in October? If so, I can organise to send you
 FOSS4G postcards to advertise FOSS4G.

Alex covers most of my comments.

 Yves,
Have you considered using the LiveDVD instead of a USB key? I suspect it
would be cheaper. (at ~ $2 per DVD). You can also include all the data and
programs you suggested on the DVD as well.

 Hi,

Here some idea from the Francophone LC.
In the past, we organised an OpenSource village inside a tradeshow with
help of local company (c2c). We gave to visitors of the OSGeo-fr booth an
USB key with OSGeo logo on the key and PDF flyer inside (in french). In the
futur we plan to add some aplications via OSGeo4w and data (from
 OpenStreetMap).

We organized in the Open Source village and outside some conferences,
birds of feather, all kind of animation we can find in FOSS4G ;)

To get you started, you'll want to get an Exhibition Pack, these are the
basic items to setup an exhibit.
 http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Exhibition_Pack

You'll also want to make a wiki page for your event like:
 http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/CGS_2008
 http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/AAG_2009
These pages will also give you an idea of what you can hand out and what
 to have at the booth.

Next you'll want to print some materials, there's a whole bunch to
choose from in the OSGeo svn.
 http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/
You'll want to look in Marketing and maybe the Journal.

At our latest event we ran a Live DVD for demo purposes but mostly
handed out a general brochure and talked with people about what they do
and what OSGeo software might be useful to them.
In hindsite, we should of had a copy of the OSGeo Journal printed, and
 buttons would have been nice.

Hope that's enough to get you started, you should probably have someone
from your team join the marketing committee mailing list to talk about
your event, ask questions and get some more ideas.

 Enjoy,

I've just added korean translation there.

Thank you to everyone who has provided translations so far at:
 http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annonces_foss4g_fr

We are getting a good coverage of the European languages now.
I'd love to also see representation from our close neighbors as well. Are
there people on this list from:
PNG, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, China, Japan, ...

I'm also interested to know of any local user communities and to hear
suggestions on how to make FOSS4G attractive to your local region. If
appropriate, we'd like to set up a specific stream of presentations or
tutorials addressing specific needs of the Asia/Pacific region.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Successful FOSS4G use case needed especially in government sector

2008-10-07 Thread Sanghee Shin
Hi all,

I'm Sanghee Shin from Seoul, Korea. I hope somebody remember me. I presented
activities of OSGeo Korean language L.C. to you at AGM this conference.

Anyway.. I was invited to a national research institute(KRIHS) in Korea
which supports policy making of Korean central government a month ago. There
I presented what is FOSS4G and how can it be used in government sector. The
mood was very good and they showed much interest in FOSS4G at that time.

However, frankly to say, almost all the Korean GIS market - especially in
government sector - have beent dominated by proprietary s/w yet and KRISH
don't have enough courage to persuade central government to use FOSS4G at
this point. KRISH still have uncertainty and doubt on FOSS4G.

After coming back to my seat in my office from Cape Town, I got a phone call
from KRISH researcher. She said that she wanted to include those successful
case of FOSS4G use in another government into their report which should be
submitted to Korean central government. She added that FOSS4G could be a
good option for Korean government's next gis project. Since KRISH didn't
know much about FOSS4G in real case, they needed true proven case of FOSS4G
use in government sector.

Therefore I'm writting a letter to you to request your help. Please let me
know any successful case of FOSS4G in your country. Web site, implementation
history, your experiences... and kinds of materials will be useful to me.

Your help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The OSGeo AGM is comming up at FOSS4G 2008 and that means the AGM is on.
Planning is being done on the wiki page
  (http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_General_Meeting_2008) but so far it
looks like there are not many projects or chapters being represented.
I'm sure there are plenty of things that have happened over the last
year, so if you'll be there could you please consider presenting a
report (Please add your details to the wiki). It doesn't need to be
long. Actually it needs to be short- about 3-5 mins or so. The AGM
will be held on Thursday, October 2nd after the closing plenary session.
