This event will serve as a regional follow-up to last September’s highly successful international FOSS4G 2011 conference in Denver, Colorado, focusing on the North American open source geospatial community. The conference will be organized around three tracks: - open source technology best practices and tips; - deployment case studies; and - emerging ideas and trends in open source. The call for abstracts is open now and can be submitted here: http://foss4g-na.org/abstract-submission/ . We have space for about 50 presentations and 20 Ignite sessions, so get your submissions in! In addition, Michael Byrne, CIO of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be delivering a keynote address, with more speakers to be announced soon. Paul Ramsey (me!), Conference Chair of the 2007 FOSS4G conference, will be reprising his role, along with an experienced committee from the North America chapter of OSGeo to back him. [OSGeo-Discuss] Moving On
This weekend the OSGeo Board of Directors held their annual face-to-face meeting where they hash out direction, budgets and other items for the upcoming year. For me, the most important outcome from the meeting was that they decided to end my position as Executive Director. It has been an incredible experience working in this position with so many great people, communities, technology, and friends. All for which I'm very grateful and, honestly, very inspired. I am reviewing several options for how to continue to build on my experience running this social startup. Open source geo will continue to be on the top of my list while I develop new initiatives on these fronts. Formally I just wanted to wish everyone involved in OSGeo all the best and hope to keep in touch where our projects and interest will, undoubtedly, continue to overlap. Over the next two months I'll be handing off my key responsibilities to the board and others who might be available or interested. So don't expect me to disappear anytime soon. Sincerely, Tyler ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Please check your junk mail folders for email from c...@osgeo.org if you haven't received your custom invitation already. If you have voted using the online system, thank you. I will send another confirmation email this week to those who did vote already, in case you were wondering if the system really recorded your votes. [OSGeo-Discuss] Candidate's Thoughts on OSGeo
With a very encouraging list of nominees for the open board positions, it might help (at least me!) if some could share their thoughts about OSGeo and its future direction. As a potential director: * What important areas do you see OSGeo needing to fix or strive for in order to grow? * What challenges do you see for OSGeo in the short and long terms? * What kinds of goals do you have for the organisation? (It's not a presidential race, but curious on what you see as goals for the org). * What is needed for a board to be successful? ...For OSGeo to be a success? * Have you had to deal with similar challenges before? * Etc... I'm sure others have good questions too, but thought I'd share the ones on my mind based on my experience working alongside the board. Any thoughts? Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Candidate's Thoughts on OSGeo
Thanks Eduardo. Indeed many of these are not even realised in North America, so they are very thought provoking for me. Tyler - Original message - hi Tyler, Despite some thoughts below might not be new in north hemisphere, there goes my Latin American user vision: #OSGeo is already inside the minds of power GIS users and GIS developers, we already know like things work and how/what to be done to work. Now maybe is the time to make OSGeo more visible and understood by users ##ok, it's a long process but it has to begin. eg.: general population already knows that oh Linux? yes, I got. It's free of charge right? and some commercial users, after 2008 economical crisis plus web2/social networking boom, already got that it's not just a matter of cost, but also because free/opensource tool will not make a big change of architecture, basic concepts/structures without talking to users ( eg.: MapServer mapfile programming structure is almost the same since it was born, but in some commercial tools things may change a lot in minor/major releases) ##these same end-users ( including independent workers, commercial users) must to see that F4G platform can help SERVICES market: helping to cut costs on software acquisition ( smaller total project/service costs) and making service providers FREE from this or that software supplier ( and to help services market is help on job opportunities too... a cool social role of foss and foundations) ##and maybe one way to help on that is to make more SOLUTION cases visible. First step is to prove that existing foss technology works and this is done. The step to enforce is to 'sell the fish' that integration with commercial solutions is possible and support on foss communities can even be better/faster than commercial support centers. ##certification and stamp matters: for corporate communities/users is important to ensure that this or that software/solution have an OSGeo certified stamp. There are a lot of users that do not need more than one or two softwares. And most of them is always looking for work with only one, if possible. So, if the second tool the user will look for also has the osgeo stamp, user may feel better with that. In this sense, a certification program (eg. Linux LPI) for professional geo users is a plus too. ##interoperation: another oportunity maybe could be to insert OSGeo stamp/talks on other kind of events - not only on GIS events but also on business events ( logistics, environmental, agriculture, forestry, mining, etc) with less tech language and more 'executive' presentations ##inside corporate world, acronym like GeoBI, GeoETL, GeoEAI or GeoCRM can take attention of sponsors ( managers, directors). And this will also help on base techs projects advertising. ##OSGeo partnering with academia projects ( RD) and private/publich companies will always be welcome too. #for the power user who follow planet OSGeo is not hard to get the 1st contact with a new released tool. But, for the newcomers, a simple setup can take a month or months. How to help on that? More docs ( 'for dummy' guides, quick ref cards, process oriented manuals and not only function guide/reference guide) and tutorials and this include local references. ##and for translation tasks, I believe it's not only to do the translation. But to adapt texts, images, data and senses can be a plus on users influence ##tools such as surveys (online, magazines, collected on events) could help to map local gap's and user desire/needs #communication: I think local committees/communities should always be in talk to international foundation goals and tasks and vice-versa. Parallel initiatives such as local groups must be inserted/combined on OSGeo projects/tasks - we should sum efforts and not divide. So, it's important to highlight the benefits on working together OSGeo to these parallel heads. Ten or fifteen years ago I saw a lot of projects and services to be killed because the lack of free options or free cases. Now, we have a lot of options to replace or interoperate with. We need more visibility, more users enabled to call the attention of other users. best Eduardo Patto Kanegae http://www.webmapit.com 2011/8/5 Tyler Mitchell (OSGeo) tmitch...@osgeo.org: With a very encouraging list of nominees for the open board positions, it might help (at least me!) if some could share their thoughts about OSGeo and its future direction. Please send your nominations to award-nominati...@gnu.org, on or before Wednesday, 16 February 2011. ### Award for the Advancement of Free Software The Free Software Foundation Award for the Advancement of Free Software is presented annually by FSF president Richard Stallman to an individual who has made a great contribution to the progress and development of free software, through activities that accord with the spirit of free software. Last year, John Gilmore was recognized with the Award for the Advancement of Free Software for his contributions to network security. Gilmore joined a prestigious list of previous winners including Wietse Venema, Harald Welte, Ted Ts'o, Andrew Tridgell, Theo de Raadt, Alan Cox, Larry Lessig, Guido van Rossum, Brian Paul, Miguel de Icaza and Larry Wall. ### Award for Projects of Social Benefit Nominations are also open for the 2010 Award for Projects of Social Benefit. The Social Benefit award recognizes a project that intentionally and significantly benefits society through collaboration to accomplish an important social task. Last year, The Internet Archive received this award, in recognition of its work to foster a growing body of creative, educational and scientific works that can be shared and built upon by others, and to raise awareness of the harm inflicted by increasingly restrictive copyright regimes. Previous winners have included Creative Commons, Groklaw, the Sahana project, and Wikipedia. ### Eligibility In the case of both awards, previous winners are not eligible for nomination, but renomination of other previous nominees is encouraged. Only individuals are eligible for nomination for the Advancement of Free Software Award (not projects), and only projects can be nominated for the Social Benefit Award (not individuals). The award committee has not been finalized, but the last year's award committee was composed of: Suresh Ramasubramanian (Chair), Peter H. Salus, Raj Mathur, Hong Feng, Andrew Tridgell, Jonas Oberg, Verner Vinge, Richard Stallman, and Fernanda G. Weiden. Please send your nominations to award-nominati...@gnu.org, on or before Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Please submit nominations in the following format: * In the email message subject line, either put the name of the person you are nominating for the Award for Advancement of Free Software, or put the name of the project for the Award for Projects of Social Benefit. * Please include, in the body of your message, an explanation (40 lines or less) of the work done and why you think it is especially important to the advancement of software freedom or how it benefits society, respectively. * Please state, in the body of your message, where to find the materials (e.g., software, manuals, or writing) which your nomination is based on. Would anyone be interested in having an online (IRC chat) meeting with me, the OSGeo Board, committee chairs, etc. at some point? It would be nothing too formal, just a basic Town Hall meeting style. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] A quick poll!
Wow, in a few short hours the yes/no results in the poll went from 38/38% to 85/5% - thanks for voting, that's very cool to see. On a similar note, because many of the OSGeo libraries are also used behind proprietary products, many proprietary users won't even know that they actually do use open source without knowing it. That's a big success story, in my opinion, and one I remind audiences about regularly. Software good enough to be relied on by the massive commercial interests of proprietary vendors... says something positive about our quality. Keep up the good work developers! :) Tyler On 15 April 2010 21:26, Tyler Mitchell (OSGeo) tmitch...@osgeo.org mailto:tmitch...@osgeo.org wrote: I've been talking to the folks at gisjobs.com http://gisjobs.com, encouraging them to add open source technology to their salary survey. [OSGeo-Discuss] Common map printing specifications project [Fwd: Students: Get Paid to work on this project]
Hi all, just forwarding this note to this more general OSGeo channel, since it applies to several projects and communities. Year after year, one of the largest complaints about open source mapping applications is the ability to output large, high quality, printable maps. It's often the issue that some proprietary users say prevents them from moving to an open source platform. Recognising that we can always do better, the Carto project is an effort to address this in a standard way, so that all open source applications may output configuration files according to a specification and have a common 'engine' application produce an output file. By using a standards-based approach, developers can work together on improving printing output overall instead of doing it in dozens of different ways. That said, attached is my attempt to try to find some students to work on the project through Google's Summer of Code :) I'm also forwarding it here for those others who are interested in trying to help move this initiative along. Either way, join our list and say hi.[1] Except for some interesting work with Mapnik and QGIS together (Dane Springmeyer's Quantumnik!) this is pretty much still theoretical. Tyler [1] http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/carto ---BeginMessage--- Greetings everyone! The OSGeo Carto mailing list [1] was created to discuss developing a common approach to printable (vector-based) map output from open source mapping applications. With Google's Summer of Code program, we have a great opportunity for students to be funded to work on this project! Please forward this on to any students that you think might benefit. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Cartographic_Engine Note there is room for a range of programming abilities, here are just a few... * developing XML-based map definition and print standard specifications * writing a GUI-based app for doing map layout * converting project configuration files into a common format * enhancing Mapnik to handle layout and file output definitions * What else? You tell us! Students are welcome to propose new ideas! This year, we've tied this project directly to Mapnik (and indirectly to QGIS or GRASS) just so it is clearly not a new project, but an enhancement of an existing one. Since it is really focused on developing and implementing standards, I'm not opposed to using other projects in there for either the 'client' or the engine - so if you're a student interested in MapServer or gvSIG, for example, and would rather work on implementing it that way, then please just propose it. I only had to narrow our focus to keep it clear. Time is running out for student applications, so let's get the word out! Even if you're not a student but are interested in helping in some way, join the list and say hi. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Open Source Viewer for 3D Maps
Brent Fraser wrote: We've used VTP (vterrain.org) and modified the GUI of it's Enviro viewer to be a little more end-user friendly. VTP does a good job of providing an interactive 3d environment of DEM and texture (e.g satellite image), and optionally 3d structure models. On the downside, you have to author your datasets carefully (using VTBuilder) to get good performance, and you have to limit your map/model to an extent (it doesn't model a globe, only a projection). There's a ton of 3d modeling info on the VTP web site. You're bringing back some good old memories for me Brent! I used VTP a lot in my last job and it produced some wildly beautiful product and exciting fly over animation abilities (among other things). Ecologists especially liked the function allowing you to draw/digitise onto the terrain in 3D mode. We had Python scripts that did all our dataset prep for us, and if my memory serves me right, we even had ways of converting the digitised stuff back into a shapefile for use in our other apps. Ossim (www.ossim.org) has OssimPlanet which DOES model a globe but it can be an effort to set up (I've never tried it). Binaries are available for download for most platforms. Then you probably want to get a terrain model (just one big download) and put it in the right folder. Other than that it's pretty easy to get started with WMS or file datasources. Hi all, I'm working on responding to some questions relating to our 501c3 application with US govt and would really like your opinion, stories, examples to make sure I hit the nail on the head. I'd like to describe two aspects of what OSGeo does and how it helps the public. In particular relating to education and to charitable activities. I know how I'd answer, but what about you? 1. In what areas/topics/information do we teach to new users or educate the public in general? Basically, what is the 'content' of our education endeavours? 2. How does OSGeo provide a charitable benefit to the public? Don't link it directly back to education, but think about how our features, abilities and products get used to benefit the public. Take it beyond just having free access to software generally, and share in particular the charitable ways it helps the public (charitable as in helps people, the world, etc. not as in just being free). Yes, somewhat vague questions, but I really want them to know the details about these not just a cursory mention of our workshops and our no-cost software :) I only have a day or two to get my answers together, but a longer thread is also welcomed to help share your perspective. The academic track will act as an inventory of current research topics, but the major goal is to promote cooperative research between OSGeo developers and the academia. The academic track is the right forum to highlight the most important research challenges and trends in the domain, and let them became the basis for an informal OSGeo research agenda. It will foster interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of the geospatial and free and open source domains. It will be organized in a way to promote networking between the participants, to initiate and favour discussions regarding cutting-edge technologies in the field, to exchange research ideas and to promote international collaboration. Submission guidelines All submissions to the academic track must be original unpublished work written in English. Papers should not exceed the 6000 words limit. [OSGeo-Discuss] Website News Editor(s) welcome
Hi all, have a few minutes a week to help post news/events on the OSGeo website? Frank and I usually take care of these items but could use a bit of help to keep things running smoothly. There is a (volunteer) opportunity for at least one person to help out in the role of OSGeo News Editor. The job is quite simple, posting news/events information that are sent in and usually consists of a few postings per week. Posting the information on the website is quite easy and uses a few simple forms. Most of the time all the info to be posted is sent in by other members and is simply copied over (e.g. you don't have to be a writer :-) ) If you're interested, drop a note to news_i...@osgeo.org and say hello. [OSGeo-Discuss] Gov't adopting open source ?
I'm just starting to dig into this question myself, but thought I'd ask if anyone else knows of a resource/document/site, etc. that shows which governments (nationally, regional or municipal) have committed to open source software? Regards Kumaran This is a good question and I'm very interested in any answers you receive. This sort of workflow/project management software is much needed in the GIS industry sector and I've not seen any open source options out there that met my specific needs when I looked previously. One that might help at least on the conersion/transformation side is Talend studio with it's spatial component: http://www.spatialdataintegrator.com/ But that's likely only one piece of the puzzle. I believe that much of what is required for job tracking and workflow can be developed through some simple web interfaces, with open source apps sitting on the server side. I've taken several attempts on doing this but never devoted enough time/focus to get very far. If any else is interested in developing such tools, I'd be interested in discussing it further. I believe these are necessary to streamline workflow and gain back efficiency that has been lost during the industry's general move toward using point-click GUI environments for everything. [OSGeo-Discuss] 2009 Annual Report Startup!
Happy New Year! On that note... let's kick off summarising last years' activities. This is the opportunity to brag about what your project, committee and local chapters have been up to and progress you've made. All of this is an important part of showing that our community and projects are active and engaging and for showing value to our sponsors, members and supporters. Submit the report here: * http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_Report_2009 Or email me directly. If the wrong name is beside the report, please change it accordingly or let me know. Holler if there is anything confusing. * I'd like to wrap this up by the end of January, so if you need a hard deadline please aim for January 18th or tell me when to expect it. If anyone is interested in helping coordinate this report with me, let me know (e.g. to help with final layout and emailing/harassing potential authors). I encourage you to forward this invitation to your project teams and local contacts. Looking forward to hearing what you've been up to! Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: Will there be an OSGeo Desktop shootout atFOSS4G 2010?
So if this is true, then that means that 80% of GIS users are asking the question, Why should I use desktop open source XXX instead of ESRI? I get more questions asking about the differences between FOSS projects than between FOSS and proprietary products. If people are already coming to FOSS4G, or to OSGeo in some other way, they likely already want to use open source but want help choosing a path. I do agree that many wonder how we stack up to proprietary but I hope we stick to what we know best. That is, unless proprietary folks join the shootout. :) Just a thought, Tyler ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I believe the answer was, We see ESRI as a major success story for OSGeo since they've adopted GDAL and OGR. Couldn't have been addressed more perfectly. Folks, To be clear, I am unaware of any adoption of OGR by ESRI. They do make extensive use of GDAL for raster translation and raster data access. Minor note - usually when I give this answer I say GDAL/OGR as a blanket project name, but I can see how that can be confusing when spoken verbally :) While this is a good point to mention, and helps point out that things aren't as simple as us and them, since even them is often one of us in some respects, I'd like us to be able to give a deeper answer. Many workloads that are currently done with ArcGIS could also be done with FOSS tools (most web mapping, much desktop work, and some deep analysis). I'd like to get white papers, and presentations addressing some of these easily transferrable workloads. I'd also like this workflow assessment angle from the perspective of how I got this project done using FOSS tools - with a backdrop of what they'd have to do otherwise (e.g. using a proprietary package). To add to Chris' comments... I suggest any job seeker offer to host an OSGeo-UK meetup... bring the employers to you instead :) Seriously though - there may be an opportunity here for those who have some momentum for a local OSGeo chapter nearby. Get on the mailing list, ask for ideas for a venue to meet and plan a meeting using the wiki or mailing list - a couple folks will often volunteer to do a talk or provide a discussion point. I believe that many local chapter OSGeo'ers are just waiting for a chance to chat over a beer or talk and plan in a local boardroom. Re: Fwd: [OSGeo-Discuss] Mind Map - Open Source Spatial Projects
According to the Freemind FAQ, there is an applet that will allow the mindmap to be presented via a Web Page [1]. I have not tried this yet. Perhaps something hosted by OSGeo if the applet works OK? Hi, it definitely works and I've used it for years. When I was using S5 format web presentations I handled it two ways. One, would be to link a graphic in my presentation to a separate web page with the applet embedded. The other was to embed it directly in my presentation page (if a smaller window was warranted). I've got it online running here: http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/community/presentations/20070925-Victoria/OSGeoCommunity.html Note, it crashed my Firefox (on OSX) but ran in SAfari okay. Note also the applet requires a web url and can't point to a local file - which can be a bit of a pain. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[OSGeo-Discuss] WMS Performance Shootout at FOSS4G 2009
Sydney, Australia. 5 October 2009. http://2009.foss4g.org GeoServer, MapServer, and ArcGIS Server will be competing for the title of Fastest Web Map Server (WMS) at the FOSS4G 2009 conference at the end of October. The Web Mapping Performance Shoot-out compares Web Map Servers in a variety of real world use cases. This third installment of the FOSS4G shoot-out looks to be even more exciting with the introduction of a team from ESRI. ESRI supports interoperability with the OSGeo and open source community says Satish Sankaran, PhD., ESRI Product Manager for Interoperability, and, as such, are happy to participate in the OSGEO demonstration-'shootout' at FOSS4G. We are also participating in the OGC's Climate Change Integration Plugfest at FOSS4G, and with our colleagues from 52North who will be in the technical exhibits area. The performance shoot-out will see GeoServer, MapServer, and ArcGIS Server compared in terms of how long they take to generate a map image, from a common set of spatial data. The data formats used will be shapefile, geotiff, ECW, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, and SDE on Oracle. Benchmarking scripts will be executed on a common platform running Red Hat Linux. GeoServer will be represented by Andrea Aime (OpenGeo) and Simone Giannecchini (GeoSolutions). With the rapid expansion of GeoServer's capabilities each year, these benchmarking exercises are an excellent forum for us to test it in new and challenging ways, said Chris Holmes, Managing Director of OpenGeo and founder of the GeoServer project. One of the most important 'rules of engagement' for each Web server team is that all parties must contribute any changes that they make to their software for this exercise, back to their community. As explained by Steve Lime, founder of Mapserver, Past benchmarking presentations have brought about many improvements in the servers, such as MapServer's improvements in large shapefile indexing, raster read optimization, and labeling placement. The MapServer Project Steering Committee is excited to help with this presentation again. MapServer will be represented by Daniel Morissette (Mapgears), Jeff McKenna (Gateway Geomatics), and Frank Warmerdam. Truly, I can not understand why Universities teach closed knowledge when we should knowledge [openness is required to be knowledge]. We should teach how to fish instead of give away fishes because this is what our students demand. To sum up, Universities should be the perfect place for Free Speech and in GIS packages Free Speech is FOSS4G. Anyhow, High Schools are a good place to start. You beat me to it Agustin. I agree with your points and was going to warn that we not try to play at the same game as corporations that seek to embed their products into schools. Since, in the end it is what is taught that is important, not what tool they learn. Instead, I suggest we come at it from the angle of providing additional tools to enable educators (at any level) to teach the liberal arts/science aspects of a geographic education. I could be wrong, but it's my impression that in the past when this was done, I believe universities were actually *producing* FOSS as an outgrowth of the knowledge the students learned instead of merely ingesting some product. Any truth to that? I'm proposing the education group help match up existing FOSS teaching material with a recognised curriculum. e.g. the curriculum might say that a student needs to learn about geographic coordinate systems - so we match up a module that provides sample data and shows how to witness the effects of transformations, projections, etc. using Proj.4 commands, then visualising it in a desktop app, etc. that they may choose. In the end maybe I do agree a bit with Ian, in that I don't think it's profitable to be trying to usurp particular existing software roles in academia - which many professors will have personally chosen. How do you fight a choice after all? But we should come at it from a totally different angle more along Agustin's philosophy and providing choices for foundational teaching aligned with curriculum. I'm personally not interested in taking on an anti-proprietary angle in the debate and encourage us to look at the problem afresh, with hope of possibilities :) Okay, that may be mostly just rhetoric, but we can't forget that even the big proprietary guys are users and supports of some of OSGeo products and libraries - a real success story for us. Please note, for those who are unaware, we do have an Education discussion mailing list where we talk about these things regularly too: http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/edu_discuss Best wishes, Tyler p.s. In many universities I think we have been witnessing a move toward 'training' for careers as opposed to foundational concepts for critical thinking. I suspect it has to do with competing with colleges and independent training programs for student dollar$. I don't think it's the actual professors, but higher up that the mentality seems to set in. Consider also that all proprietary software has their own professional training courses, material and training providers already - perhaps even at lower cost and higher effectiveness than taking a full university course over months and months. Odd to think about in my mind :) But it helps remind me that there is also a market for education outside of established academics as well... how much of a market remains to be seen. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

They ask for more information and material to share with others at events or meetings, etc. They don't tend to point out technical barriers to their projects success, they already know and love a project and just want to tell others about it. [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: 2009 Board Election - Statements
FYI Nominees! I've heard from several voters that they are waiting for more statements from the 5 remaining candidates before voting. So, if you've got a draft statement sitting in your email app, I suggest you complete it sooner than later. Otherwise you seriously jeopardise your chances of receiving some of these critical votes. • Voting closes midnight (your timezone) 29-September-2009 (end of Monday) Tyler On Tue, 2009-09-22 at 09:57 -0700, Paul Ramsey wrote: Dear Board Candidates, There are 14 of you, and only 5 board slots open this year, so it is going to be tough for members to vote. [OSGeo-Discuss] Annual General Meeting 2009
Hi all, As usual we'll be holding our OSGeo Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the FOSS4G event, this time in Sydney on the October 21st following the main event. In previous years we've packed it pretty tight - getting as many smiling faces in front of the fans as possible. This year I'd like to take a slightly different approach to help maximize time a bit better. Since most software projects will have a good chance to present at FOSS4G I'd like to focus on local chapters, committees and sponsors to present. If we get too many then I will probably pull back a bit on one of those groups as well. That said, if you'd like to share a few slides (4-5 max) on your committee, chapter, or from an OSGeo sponsor - please add yourself to the wiki. The program will still be tight, so each person will likely only have 2-3 minutes... yes, it's the OSGeo Lightning AGM ;-) For those projects who are not presenting elsewhere in the conference, I will make a sign-up list for projects to meet at the OSGeo booth - then interested folks can come by at the selected time. There is also the Demo Theatre which will be available to show off stuff. You are also welcome to add any questions or discussion point suggestions to the wiki page. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_General_Meeting_2009#Discussion_Ideas Best wishes, Tyler ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[OSGeo-Discuss] Nominating Jeroen Ticheler for Board
I nominate Jeroen for re-election to the OSGeo board. He has served as a director for the past two years and has helped move OSGeo forward in an appreciated and valuable way. In particular, he has helped lead some of the marketing developments that were really needed and gave critical feedback on board issues as they arose. He has served as a very helpful sounding board for ideas and direction and has helped bring good representation of the European environment, having worked for UN FAO in Italy and, more recently, starting his own consulting company in the Netherlands. He is project lead for the GeoNetwork project and has helped build large scale applications of various parts of the OSGeo stack in large organisations. He is committed to OSGeo's mission and keen to continue participating in the future of OSGeo at the board level. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[OSGeo-Discuss] Nominating Geoff Zeiss
I nominate Geoff Zeiss for the OSGeo Board of Directors. Geoff doesn't need much of an introduction, being so active on the international conference speaking circuit. He has been a keen promoter of OSGeo from the beginning, in particular through spreading our message during his presentations but even more through helping building connections between OSGeo and others he knows. Geoff has more than 15 years experience developing enterprise geospatial solutions for the utilities, communications, and public works industries. His particular interests include streamlining the infrastructure management workflow at utilities, telecommunications firms and local government, open source geospatial and Web 2.0 and its impact on infrastructure management, and converged BIM/CAD/GIS/3D solutions. Geoff's work experience gives him a strong understanding of management teams and technical aspects of software development by being a chief technology visionary for several companies. His birds-eye view of the larger IT and geospatial landscape is very well informed and respected. His support and encouragement of OSGeo has already been very helpful in several ways, including helping raise sponsorship. As a board member he would bring considerable experience, enthusiasm and a strategic perspective that could help in the years to come. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Not a bad idea Bob. I'd also like to take it a step further and have some basic web forms that help to create the flyers so that no software is required on the client - e.g. enter the info, press create and download a PDF. I can offer a couple of sites as could others I bet. I like your example, nice and colorful. If someone could point me to MapServer powered sites, I'll update the screenshot in the flyer. - Perhaps the screen shots could be a bit taller, more of a square aspect ratio#63; Ok, I'll take a further look. - Under features it might make sense to highlight output options: all sorts of raster images, PDF, SWF, SVG and templated text - Might include input and the new output plugin architectures as features - The Leverages best-of-breed sentence could be reworked to say we leverage other OSGeo projects including GDAL, GEOS, PostGIS and Proj.4. I think we should really emphasize the reliance on other OSGeo projects. - In the last feature sentence I think MapBuilder can be removed. There are some frameworks specific to (or that at least favor) MapServer (e.g. p.mapper and GeoMoose) that could get some love here... Thanks for this info. I'm putting it in. I think the 5.6 features are performance centric (raster rendering improvements, single pass, etc...). The 6.0 release *should* have a more output-based focus with full support for the rendering plugin, new object structures including references, better SLD support, styles within labels and so on. XML mapfiles will be in 5.6. It's important to note that XML mapfiles allow users to define a configuration in XML but you must transform it to a .map file for use. I hope that might really have an impact on wysiwyg editors eventually. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] RE: Insurance for contractors?
I've been on all three sides of this issue in Canada as well. 1 - Hiring requirements due to a funding source required insurance prior to letting a contract - so the one man shop we had previously hired had to get insurance to remain working with us (prior to OSGeo, I might add). 2 - I've been on the contractor side in a large firm where we _did_ have insurance, so it wasn't issue then, but I knew other companies who couldn't bid on similar work because of it. 3 - I also bid on a project before as an independent contractor only to find this restrictions as a showstopper (there was no guarantee of the work, so I wasn't going to spend the money). At the end of the day, it certainly *felt* like the issue being addressed was less about professional insurance and more about keeping independent contractors out of the bidding market. Sorry to hear you are hitting it. Tyler On Mon, 2009-08-31 at 14:00 -0700, Michael P. Gerlek wrote: Well, this is interesting... [OSGeo-Discuss] The Easy steps to get your project on the FOSS4G Live DVD]

Projects that can write their install script this week will be included on The Arramamgong Live DVD which will be given to all delegates at the FOSS4G http://2009.foss4g.org conference. The scripts should cover the installation and configuration of each project into a base Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/ 9.04 system. Separate scripts can optionally cover data, demos and tutorials. As a bonus, these scripts are exactly what packagers require to bundle your project into Debian and Ubuntu, so you will be taking the first steps toward getting your project into a Linux distribution. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: [postgis-users] pg_routing 1.02
Just generally keep in mind though as well, that some open source is only intended to run on Windows and many projects do recognise the importance of that platform, particularly in the GIS arena. So while many may not like, many don't seem to really mind and look at it as one more diverse OS to support. Tyler René A. Enguehard wrote: Open source software is exactly that: open source. That means you can take the source and compile it for whichever OS you want, really. For Windows things get a bit... involved and you might have to use something like Cygwin, but it IS possible. You should probably get in contact with David Techer as he would know how exactly to do this regarding pgRouting. However, you should note that in general people in the open source community aren't actively trying to discourage using Windows, we just hate having to do anything with/for Windows and so it is rare to get Windows binaries. That doesn't mean it's not possible. Porting an open source application to a new OS take comparatively very little work to a proprietary application. But it's still a heck of a lot of trouble to go through for an OS (Windows) which we thoroughly dislike. :) Ravi wrote: Hi Listers, have been trying this on windows for a long time. More info below... I focused on items particularly related to the Education disk theme. The timelines were a bit tight for me so, unfortunately, I was not able to work as closely with others as I would normally like on describing it. However, the description of the project and future dreams for it fit our common goals. I had hoped to describe the history (and all the great folks who helped with the various projects) a bit clearer but ran into their word count limit, so please don't think I forgot those who have done the main work on these projects. The nomination process allows public comments on the nomination, so I encourage you to voice your support for it. The deadline for nominations has passed but I believe you will still be able to add comments. They should help to build the case for the importance of the project. Also, as part of the process I have pointed to the Live GIS Disc wiki page, so if you have other ideas to add, please do so there. I'll be sure to update the wiki page for more details on the education perspective. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New to the list A question
Welcome Andy, Between many of us, we are familiar with all the technologies you mention, so you've come to right place. Although the MapServer users mailing list may be able to help more specifically on MapServer questions. Just a few quick notes for you before someone with real experience addressing your problems writes. * You should be able to add support for ArcSDE datasets into GDAL/OGR for accessing the data in MapServer. But you may find you have to recompile GDAL/OGR from scratch or in some cases add in a module. I'm not 100% on the process here as I haven't done it exactly. * ECW support is handled in a similar way to the above. I suggest you search the GDAL/OGR (http://gdal.org) mailing list archives or the ECW page on the OGR data formats web page. It might be as simple as dropping in a .so file somewhere. * The best alternatives to ArcSDE is likely to be PostgreSQL database with the PostGIS spatial extension. * For ECW alternatives it's not a simple move as the two main compression technologies are proprietary - the main other being Lizardtech's MrSID format. You might find you can still use ECW or MrSID depending on your specific needs. Otherwise you could move to the open JPEG2000 format that still provides good compression, though from my own experience it seems to have a higher overhead for decompressing the data (it's likely improved since my last time using it). Hope that helps. Like I said, others here are experts on particular components so they will likely pop up with real solutions rather than my hot air ;-) Best wishes, Tyler On 6-May-09, at 7:15 AM, Andy Kannberg wrote: Hello people, I am new to the list, and I have subscribed for the following reason: I am a linux/unix consultant, currently deployed at a government. At this government they use a GIS system, based on Mapserver. Additional software is also used, like GDAL, GEOS, ECW, ArcSDE SDK, Xerces-c, Oracle Instant client, GD, Proj, Fcgi and Postgis. All is running on a RHEL4 system. The idea is to run this all on Ubuntu 8.04. I've found all packages to be available on Ubuntu, except for ArgSDE SDK (Now a part of ArcGIS Server) and ECW, which is from Erdas. ArcGIS server is propietary, and is only supported on RedHat or Suse. ECW is a SDK from Erdas (www.ermapper.com), and, apparantly they've changed their EULA and it says, it is now allowed to use the ECW SDK within Mapserver. (This is second hand info, so please don't shoot me if it is not correct.) So, my actual question is, is there an alternative to ArcGIS and ECW ? Would appreciate it if someone can shed a light on this, as GIS systems are new to me. cheers, Andy Kannberg ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
