RE: [slim] Tag info does not match what Slim is showing

2005-05-11 Thread Nick Walker
Sorry

The reason for the later part of the question was to try and avoid
re-tagging files in the future.

All my tags are currently correct. I use Tag&Rename and I use ID3v1 and
ID3v2. The tag info is the same on v1 and v2.

Quoting Nick Walker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

what you are requesting is somewhat contradictory. In one paragraph you are
noting that slimserver doesn't correctly match the tags you have
painstakingly set,. Then you ask that slimserver after what it reads from
the tags, which might not match every single user's desire for tagging. Not
every case can be solved with a global preference, especially when many band
may not adhere to formal title case.

Slimserver should be following your tags exactly, with the exception of the
known issues with unicode characters. What program are you using to write
the tags? Does it work with ID31, 2.3 or 2.4?

Re: [slim] Using Squeeze with a wireless network drive ?

I have finally given in and realized this product is the real deal. My
only complaint, if one could be made, is that I would like to be able

Is this possible, and I am just missing the trick to doing this ?..or

The device won't do a lot without a server. It needs slimserver run on a
machine it can connect to. It can't read the files itself.

When exactly does it go blank? Does it display the main menu ("Now

Are you still able to reach the server's web interface? If it has crashed,

[slim] Squeezebox 1 Can't Find Slimserver

2005-05-11 Thread Mitch G

Up until today, my Squeezebox 1 was working fine with Slimserver 6.x.
However, today, I had to replace the Ethernet adapter on the computer
hosting my Slimserver software.
At that point, my SB couldn't find the server.
So, I updated to the latest official server software (as of May 11) but
I still have the same problem.
I checked my server's firewall settings and they are all fine.
In fact, Softsqueeze 2.0x on a laptop that is on the same network as
the SB works fine.

Specifically, this is what is happening on the SB:

I plug the SB in.
It starts up.
I have it get it's IP address automatically and it does.
Then it looks for a slimserver and can't find one (although as stated
above, softsqueeze is able to find fine).
So, I enter the slimserver's IP address manually.
The SB then says the setup is complete.
So, I try navigating to play music, but the SB then goes blank.
I press the right button again and get an error that the connection
with the slimserver has been lost.

I also tested with slimserver 6.0.2 on the laptop from which
softsqueeze works. Nothing.
So, I tried slimserver 5.4.1 on the laptop and still my SB couldn't
find the server.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

[slim] Re: New music library folders not found

2005-05-11 Thread mwgilbert

I have a similar problem, and have opened a bug with the Slim Devices
support people, who have been very helpful.

You can see it at http://bugs.slimdevices.com/
Search for bug #1507

As a result of seeing your post, I added to the report:

--
This was from a very recent forum post:

"When I create new folders in my music library location (D:\) the
slimserver or squeezebox does not find them. A funny twist... I put an
MP3 file in an existing empty folder that's been there since day 1 and
the file was found no problem."

Everytime I add music, I add an album, which is adding a new subfolder.
The difference between rescan and wipe cache may be that rescan is
looking for new files in an existing tree structure, but wipe cache
recreates the structure.
--

Check out the bug tracking to see if they come up with something.

[slim] Squeezebox menu problem in recent nightlies

2005-05-11 Thread Philip Meyer
I noticed last night that the menus on my squeezebox were a bit messed up after
navigating through the plugins menu.

I updated to todays latest version and the problem remains.

If I navigate into a plugin submenu and then back (left arrow) and navigate to
another menu option, the previous submenu options are displayed instead.

Maybe this is related to a recent problem where there was a plugin menu option
within the plugin folder due to case sensitivity?

[slim] New music library folders not found

2005-05-11 Thread shawn777

When I create new folders in my music library location (D:\) the
slimserver or squeezebox does not find them.

D:\ is an entire HD and it's getting as full as I want but has 11GB
free. I have created several test folders with various names, some
empty, some with mp3s. I've upgraded from 6.0.1 to 6.0.2. I've
rescaned, rebooted, and tried repetedly to find those folders or their
contents by Browse Music Folder and Searching for specific titles.
Nothing works; not with slimserver or the squeezebox... the folders are
just not there.

A funny twist... I put an MP3 file in an existing empty folder that's
been there since day 1 and the file was found no problem.

Running win xp pro sp2, slimserver as a service

Any ideas? This is driving me crazy!

[slim] Command Line interface - X10 Remote

2005-05-11 Thread Bill Moseley
Looking for suggestions:

I have an X10 remote that connects to the serial port. I have a Perl
script (mouseremote.pl) that listens to the serial port and maps
keystrokes to commands that are issued via a system() call.

For example, I have the remote run these commands when in "CD" mode to
control xmms:

[CD]
Power xmms&
.VolUp xmms-shell -e 'upvolume 2'
.VolDown xmms-shell -e 'downvolume 2'
FF xmms-shell -e next
Pause xmms-shell -e pause
Playxmms-shell -e play
Rew xmms-shell -e previous
ab xmms-shell -e 'shuffle ON'
Dispxmms-shell -e 'shuffle OFF'
Stopxmms-shell -e stop
Mutexmms-shell -e pause

Is there a utility available to send commands to the slimserver via
a system call? I know I can connect to port 9090 -- but I'm wondering if
there's already a program available that will work with my existing
setup.

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver not recognizing changes in mp3 Tags

2005-05-11 Thread kdf

along the lines of the CUE sheets issue, you will also need to check any
existing playlists that have the #EXTINF tags. Those can also rework the db
since those are read after initial scans.

running from command line like so:
c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe --d_info will let you see all the
tagging activity (and its a lot).

Glad to know you are keen on contributing. If you feel liek jumping in full
speed, I recommend downloading ActivePerl (if you are using windows) and
running slimserver.pl instead of slim.exe. You can make the .pl into a service
using firedaemon. This way, if you start hacking at the code, you can test
your changes. slim.exe requires the Perl Dev Kit, which isn't so freely
available.

Do you have any CUE sheets sitting in your music directory tree? If
so, any discrepency between the CUE sheet and tagging data will cause

I think I have the biography plugin installed properly on 6.1 (today's
version) - it is checked in the server settings > plugins and it shows
up under 'help', but no matter what the artist it always 'can't find
any information' - the artists and bands are not obscure. Is there
something I can check? ("Information provided by AllMusic' is
displayed). Thx.
Click that "allmusic" button - does it take a long time to show up (>15
seconds)? The "no info" page can happen, if there's a timeout. And as it's
stupidly caching that page it will always present you the empty
information for that artist... You can go to the plugins' settings and
purge the cache to have it update. Or I can send you the latest and
greatest version (_much_ improved behaviour with slow connections, but 6.1
only). Send me a private mail if you want to be my beta tester ;-).

other end of the house. I can't run cable so all devices in the house
connect to each other wirelessly which means I can't currently stream
lossless files to my Squeezebox as I get lots of drop outs, so I just stream
MP3's instead but the quality does not make me too happy.
I have just run out of hard disk space on my two PCS. I already have hard
drives stacked up in them, sitting on top of each other. I need more disk
space. I was just about to buy two Maxtor 300gb USB 2 external hard drives
for a grand total of about 320 UK pounds..
but
I'm realising I may be in this rented house for longer than I originally
thought... so I want to find out if there is any way I can sort things out
so I can stream PCM to my Squeezebox.
I'm beginning to think that maybe my best solution may be some sort of box
that will hold lots of hard drives, make no noise at all... and that allows
me to run Slimserver on it so I can stick it next to the adsl hub in the
lounge. I would be using Windows computers to control it over the wireless
network (as it would not have a monitor and I am not Linux conversant)
Can anyone suggest a (not expensive) solution? Does it exist? I am getting
quite fed up of not being able to listen to my lossless files on my hifi.
Is the squeezebox in the same room as the router? Could you not hardwire
the squeezebox to the router?

This would cut your wireless bandwidth requirements in half.
Or is it that the PC-->router link is too slow? You could try upgrading
the arials on either the PC or the router or both.

I have seen some weird designs on the internet of bits of carboard lined
with tin foil behind arials to make them directional and increase the
link quality.

Re: [slim] Tag info does not match what Slim is showing

2005-05-11 Thread kdf
Quoting Nick Walker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

what you are requesting is somewhat contradictory. In one paragraph you are
noting that slimserver doesn't correctly match the tags you have painstakingly
set,. Then you ask that slimserver after what it reads from the tags, which
might not match every single user's desire for tagging. Not every case can be
solved with a global preference, especially when many band may not adhere to
formal title case.

Slimserver should be following your tags exactly, with the exception of the
known issues with unicode characters. What program are you using to write the
tags? Does it work with ID31, 2.3 or 2.4?

[slim] Tag info does not match what Slim is showing

2005-05-11 Thread Nick Walker

Hi

Perhaps I am missing something.

I have just gone to great lengths to sort the tagging information out on all
my MP3 files on my slimserver.

I then wiped the cache expecting that the server would recreate the database
using the new information on the files. But this does not seem to be the
case.
I have even un-installed and re-installed the 6.02 software, but still no
joy.

For example I have correctly capitalised all Albulms eg "The Eye of the
Tiger", this change is not reflected on the slimserver.

Another question is there a way the slim server can ignore capitalisation ?

Eg Artist Fred Blogs and fred blogs being shown as the same artist ?

[slim] All PCs and SB wireless to adsl hub... but want to stream pcm. Solution?

2005-05-11 Thread Simon @ Home

Hello.
I'm getting a bit desperate.
My newly rented and listed cottage has only one phone point which is
situated in the lounge, so this is where my netgear adsl wireless
router/hub/firewall is. My main computers are a floor above this at the
other end of the house.

This is a known "problem" with version 6.0.x. You'll have to do a
"wipe cache" (which clears the entire database and rescans from
scratch) to get SlimServer to forget the old tag information. Make
sure you don't have so much as a single tag with a misspelled artist or
album name or you'll still have duplicate entries in the SlimServer
database.
You can also navigate all the way down to the track _as described by the
new tag_ to wipe out the old tag. I just used this recently and it does
work.

Slim's focus is on free formats; anything DRM'ed is not likely to be
supported unless it's by an external developer as a plugin. If you're
willing/able to break the DMCA law and de-DRM the files you receive from
those services, you can play the results through Slimserver.

But, you may be asking, how come Roku can support it? Because they pay
license fees to the DRM owners to do so, receiving in turn binary-only
decoders.

I'm not sure if it was the CEO, the competition, or the business model, but
the CEO's taken a lesser position. They need a standalone hi-def unit, for
one thing - needed it a while back, before the cable companies came out with
their own, and then fixed the rampant bugs that Tivo could've beat them over

I hadn't heard that, but I'd be very surprised it that's true - I think a
couple years back, they would put on-air mentions in their newsletters, so
that would be quite a change of pace for them.

Hello!
From the What's New page :
It took quite some time until this new version but I had to write my
diploma thesis inbetween...
Stability should have greatly improved and there are some nice new
features and some options people have requested. As a new additional
feature there is now the possibility to use CDRDAO for writing CDs from
EACs layout editor (like burnatonce), hope this will improve
compatibility with most writers. Again, read more in the "News.rtf" file.
There is an archive with only EAC and a second one that also includes
the CDRDAO package for easy download. In a few days, if everything works
out, there will be also an windows installer package to make
installation as easy as possible for beginners.
Hope you will like it!

Another option is to go down the digital radio route. This would need
tuner hardware, but allows you to make use of EPG to record specific
items - kind of like VideoPlus.

In addition, if you get the right player (currently only Trinloc
produce one) and a piece of software called DABBar to stream you can
integrate directly with SlimServer
(http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/dabbar.html). This is the set-up
I have and it works very well. Downside is you have to shell out for
the player though...

They haven't turned a profit yet? I'm surprised. I heard recently
that they sued a couple of the big networks because there was
diaglog containing "tivoing" shows. They get free advertising,
but they view it as copyright infringement. Ironic.

Agreed. Tivo is a somewhat logical progression of the VCR.

Same here, MAC address 00:04:20:05:aa:12, purchased and used in
England.

Thanks for the clarification. I have obviously misinterpreted what I
see in the picture. Presumably the PCB is double-sided and the
apparently unconnected pins are connected on the bottom side (or maybe
the traces on the top side go underneath the chip as well?)

Re: [slim] 6.1 Crashes @ Searches from SB

2005-05-11 Thread Michael Herger
When searching for song titles it's crashing in another place, too. I
opened this as bug 1516
...and all this depends on the searchSubString setting. Please give this
patch a try.
