[slim] Re: Trouble getting SB to find Slim Server - Mac OS X withD-link router
Sounds a lot like my problem. I'm running OS X 10.3.9 on a Mac Mini, SlimServer verson 6.0.2. I get through the squeezebox setup until "Problem: Lost contact..." at the very end. I'm using the same router, a D-Link DI-624. The strange thing is, it used to work! I don't know what changed, maybe some OS X security update or a router failure. I can't browse or telnet to the slimserver from an outside box either. The slimserver log doesn't show any connections being received when I try. Very frustrating, as this turns my squeezebox into a very expensive paperweight. I'm also having a similar problem with outgoing POP connections to one particular mail server, but not others. [slim] Shuffle play crash
Using Squeezebox 1 with Mandrake After installing SlimServer 6.0, I experience poor performance and random crashes. I know it upgraded the firmware on the squeezebox from something (39 likely) to 40. After deciding I wanted to go back to 5.4 because I never experienced any problems ever, I did that. Now, anytime we jump to Shuffle play, SlimServer crashes and music stops. This happens on playlists or on an album. Since I went back to 5.4, I've also installed (not upgrade) Mandriva 2005 LE with hopes that might fix things since it is starting from scratch. I've also tried SlimServer 6.02 now and I still have problems. Is there something about firmware 40 that is causing this? I expect you'll find you still get the noise even if you unplug the audio cable. In that case it's the speakers - a few (cheap) powered speakers are sensitive to RF, be it 802.11, cell phones, baby monitors, etc. Since the RF is intentional communication traffic, the only solutions are to put the speakers farther away, get better speakers, or use ethernet instead. For example: http://192.168.1.7:9000 There are essentially two ways to assign an IP addresses via DHCP - dynamically or statically (reserved). Dynamic means that the server gives out one in a set of IP addresses to whatever device requests one. There's no guarantee that a device will have the same IP address every time. In practice, though, an address can stay the same for months. Static addresses are what you generally want to use for devices that always should have the same IP address - things like servers, printers, routers. In DHCP this is done by identifying the MAC address of the device and then reserving a specific IP address to give that device when it requests one. The reserved addresses must be excluded from the dynamic address pool or addressing conflicts can arise. I've seen a number of SOHO routers that can perform simple DHCP server duties, but can't do IP address reservations. For really small networks, though, manually entering static addresses on the devices is often easier than using DHCP reservations. Now, with all that said about DHCP, you should try using the server's name in the URL. It's much easier than remembering or entering an IP address. The only trick might be to get the name to resolve correctly to its respective address. In a Windows only network you shouldn't have a problem. In a mixed network you might have to use a HOSTS file. For instance, if the server's name were "GROUCHO" you'd use: http://groucho:9000 Another trick (assuming you're not running another web server on the same machine) is to change the TCP port of the SlimServer web interface to the standard HTTP port 80. Then you don't have to enter the port number. http://groucho The "http://"; part may also be optional, depending on the browser. If so, getting to your SlimServer could be as easy as entering groucho -- JJZolx Jim ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Moreover I always run into slightly bandwidth trouble, because at first I have to start the player to configure the limit on the server. But when the server is started it streams full 320 kBit of pure silence to the player, until I limit the bitrate or play a mp3 with a lower bitrate. As this stream of silence exceeds the upload bandwidth of my ADSL, the slimserver http interface gets very slow and it needs nearly a minute to reach the bitrate limit configuration page. I hope, you understand the problem. :-) Is there a way to change the default bitrate limit for unknown players? I understand, that I could "hard code" a lower limit in the convert.conf file for every file type, but then the bandwidth limit setting on the http interface becomes useless and I always have to change convert.conf, if I want to change the limit. I would prefer a solution, where I can set a lower default bitrate for new players, which can be changed from the player settings anyhow. Is this possible? If you are using a player such as winamp, media player or itunes to conenct to http://serverip:9000/stream.mp3 try usingl: http://serverip:9000/stream.mp3?bitrate=128 or replace 128 with which ever bitrate you want to use. However you will still have the same problem that silence is encoded at 320kbps )-: But atleast you wont have to battle to the bitrate page! The other option is to use softsqueeze. [slim] Live Music Archive not working right in Squeezenetwork??
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't figure out how to set up a playlist of multiple songs off the Live Music Archive via Squeezenetwork. I'm able to navigate to a particular song and play it. However, when I navigate to another song and press the "add" button on the remote, the Sqeezebox say "adding to favorites" rather than adding the song to be played next. Essentially, to play multiple songs, you have to play each song one by one after the previous song ends. This can't be right?? ps - I'm loving the Squeezenetwork and especially the Live Music Archive browsing. However, a great feature would be the ability to view the source of the concert when browsing. For many of the more popular bands, there can be several different recordings of a particular show that sound drastically different, especially in the case when there are both audience mic'd and soundboard recordings of the same show. It would be nice to be able to choose which one you want to listen to without guessing. -- Chop ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
