I'd like it if the Slim remote could power cycle my receiver and adjust

That's why I'm pretty happy with the NAD SR-5: it can control my SB2, too.

But it still picks up artist names from other tags. Example:

Artist Tag: Chess Story

In my artist list, I should only see Chess Story (I don't want the

* WSLam shaped the electrons to say...

I can go through the music via the web UI now, but it will so much
cooler if I can see it through the SB2 itself.

WSLam - There are plans to add Unicode support to the player display. I can't
promise a timetable, as there is a decent amount of work to be done.

Currently the player fonts are implemented via a static bitmap file that is
included with SlimServer. These cover the ISO-8859-1 character set.

I have some initial thoughts on changing this to use the FreeType libraries
and render a Unicode font to the display. This would cover all the CJK
glyphs, hopefully.

Please let me know if you have any more questions - or would like to write some

I just got my Squeezebox2 today. Business and family needs will keep me

I am a major FM jazz fan. This is what drove me to seek out what the

away by all the stations available.

Am I correct that I can push select radio station IP addresses down to

I didn't.
A rescan found the 'cast (thanks!), but that just begs a different question:

Most remotes that come with the majority of audio devices won't
do this. That's why there is demand for after market universal
remotes.

The feature I would like to see the most would be a scroll wheel
of some kind. The menu and selection structure that the
Squeezebox uses really lends itself to this kind of control.

2005-06-30 Thread Barnabas

Easy sollution once found.

I shifted the endian switch to small and all was green.

That leads me to another question:

What is the most efficient for the Squeeze2?:

1)
ogg flc * *
[sox] -t ogg $FILE$ -t raw -r 44100 -c 2 -w -s $-x$ - | [flac]
-cs --compression-level-0 --totally-silent --endian little --channel 2
--bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 --sign signed -

2)
ogg flc * *
[sox] -t ogg $FILE$ -t wav -r 44100 -c 2 -w -s $-x$ - | [flac]
-cs --compression-level-0 --totally-silent --channel 2 --bps 24
--sample-rate 44100
-

The number two will yield a 24 bit output as far as I can tell, but
does that really improve sound?

the point of squeezenetwork is to not require a local server. However, there is

I'm not sure if you'd have

SB2 <-> SlimServer <-> SqueezeNetwork

or if the chain would still be

SB2 <-> SqueezeNetwork

But any SB content/functionality that is available through the use of
SqueezeNetwork should also be doable through the SlimServer web UI.
Whether it's SlimServer telling the SB to connect to SqueezeNetwork and
play such-and-such a station, or adding something to favorites or
whatever, it should be available without using the remote.

At least one reason for this would be for folks who've completely
replaced the remote with a PDA. They should be able to have access to
SqueezeNetwork content by using the PDA.

Buy yourself a cheap PDA with WiFi. You don't have to point the device at the
SB, or even have to look at the SB display, and you'll have more features at
your disposal. It's the most useful way of creating and controlling a playlist.

I think almost all SB facilities are controllable through the PDA via the
handheld skin (there used to be problems selecting radio stations, but there's
web UI browse components now). There are a few things that you can't do, like
interract with plugins such as Random. Also, you can't connect to the SB
network via the web interface.

[slim] MAC Address Changes After Fall

2005-06-30 Thread Mike Hanson

My Squeezebox was knocked off the table, but was caught before hitting
the floor by the tension of the power cable. At first I was quite
concerned, because the unit would not power up. When I fiddled with
the connector, it would flash, so I had some hope of an easy fix. I
opened up the case, and immediately noticed that the power jack had
come loose from its SMD pads on the one side. I pulled out my
soldering iron, and fixed it up, adding a bit more solder for future
strength.

Now it powered up fine, but had forgotten its network settings. I
reset everything as before, and was somewhat surprised that the prior
playlist was forgotten. I checked the Slimserver, and discovered that
the SB had a different MAC address. It used to be 04:20:05:A0:D3 (as
written on the bottom of the device and remembered by Slimserver), but
now it was 04:20:FF:FF:01!

Could it be that an EEPROM some such component was cleared by the
frequent power flashes that would have occurred with the bad
connection? Or is this a symptom of a bigger problem? Am I safe to
continue using it as-is?

[slim] Slimserver ogg2flac

2005-06-30 Thread Barnabas

Hi all,

I am new to slimserver / squeezebox and media, but pretty seasoned in
Unix/*Bsd/linux.

I connected my squeezebox yesterday and the following was very easy to
get up and running:

- Flac
- MP3
- APE

The following is giving me grief:

- Ogg/vobis
- Wma

The whole thing is described here with audio files to illustrate the
result / intermediate raw etc. (WARNING me playing poorly on an untuned
12 string recorded with a mike on a headset :-)

http://www.barnabas.dk/slim/slim.html

The example illustrates the problems with ogg 2 flac, but I am getting
the same whitenoise whizz with wma.

The rest is working 100%

Any ideas?

You actually could (quite easily) add functionality--take a look at the .map
and .ir files...by modifying them you can make a remote do plenty of things
that the original remote didn't come configured to do. And then with
plugins you could accomplish even more...

hierarchy, not filtered by a specific artist. I'm not disputing your
notion of what's intuitive to you, I'm just saying that's the way it's
been for quite a while.

Question: Would you be interested in a better remote?

- No, I'm happy with the current design
- Yes, it should be included with the SB
- Yes, but I'm willing to buy a "designer" remote as an optional
  extra.

The enhancement to the remote i would find most useful is a qwerty
keypad to make entering text easier. Obviuosly this would make the
remote rather bulky. Just an idea.

For me, a cool remote has to have a display screen so
I can see the current song, playlists, etc.

I know I can do it with a PDA with WiFi, but
they are a bit pricey

It's an interesting idea, but do these universal remotes allow you to
do anything really more than the current one. I have looked at even the
really expensive ones, and they always seem to miss out on a few
functions rather than adding new.

I was already looking at the Logitech Harmony 880
[imghttp://www.remotecentral.com/wn000263.jpg

But to be hinest, I don't think this would offer any new functions on
the remote to make it easier to use, just allow me to control all my
devices (in a more limited way) with one remote.

Anyway, interesting that so far everyone seems happy with the current
remote.

nope. plenty of devices get far too close to being fully functional via the web
interfact. it would be a complete waste of limited resources.

Title: RE: [slim] A better remote?

Justin,

the Slim Devices remote is basic so go and buy yourself soemthing like a Philips Pronto.  I use one in my lounge and it means only 1 remote instead of 5, has a back light and allows very sophisticated marcos.

Personaly I would rather Slim Devices concentrate on bugs & enhancements - my pet wish is for them to make a video version.  Remotes are very subjective and personal so whatever they did would mean someone was no happy.

Despite loving my SB2, and enjoying the way it has changed how I listen
to music (for the better of cause), I simply can't stop wondering how
great it would be if Slimdevices offered a "luxury" remote.

Thinking about it, if slimdevices thought they couldn't include it as
the standard remote as it may push the price of the unit too high,
maybe they could offer it as an optional extra?

If Slimdevices offered a better far more functional remote, would
anyone here buy it?

The things I miss on the current remote, are

*backlighting (who listens to their music in a fully bright lit room at
night?) - maybe even something as smart as having a tilt sensor so as
soon as you pick up the remote, the keys stay backlit.

* A jog control, afterall, we spend so much time scrolling through
playlists, browsing etc, spinning a jog control would be so much
faster

* Seperate keys for saving playlists (in fact for working with
playlists as well), an actual stop button, clear current playlist etc

Let's be honest. The whiole point of the SB was to "ignore" your
computer, and enjoy all your music from the comfort of your armchair,
and this means the remote is the single most used device of the SB.

Surely some of the major remote manufactorers can redesign one of their
standard highend remotes just for the squeezebox, and sell them in
partnership with slimdevices. It seems to me, the sort of people who
buy a SB, take their music and their hardware seriously enough that
this would be a viable option.

If you were to design a better remote, what options would you include?

I think that's not true. When I browse artists I should get an "All
artists" line first followed by the artists seperately listed. I can
than either play or add specific artists to the now playing playlist or
all artists by using the first line. The same is true for albums, genre
