No, it didn't crash. It just stopped. If the client is shut down, the
server can be restarted. If the client is still trying to connect, the
server tries to restart, but just remains in that state forever without
actually starting.

But as strange as this problem began, it now seems to have resolved
itself. I downloaded today's rev, and all is well again. Maybe I'll
never know what the real problem was.

That's exactly what I'd love Slimdevices to provide as a product for
us. How awesome! If Slimdevices were to take their proven hardware
skills to provide a solution like this with the slick look of their
recent Squeezeboxes, I would push women and children out of the way to
get my hands on one (not really, but you get the idea). ;-) Heck, it
would also be nice to still have a CD player & tuner on the box for
when you want to take it out of a hotspot area.

I was seriously considering making my own, but the time and effort I'd
have to put into it wouldn't be worth it. Especially since I know my
end product wouldn't be anywhere near the quality Slimdevices could put
out.

Does anyone know if they're even considering doing this at
Slimdevices?

Eagerly waiting,
Kyle

OK, that was helpful. I copied the aforementioned files into the
specified directories (choosing to overwrite some directories already
there). Now, slimserver starts and creates the tables but just stalls.
According to MySQL Administrator, there are now 145 rows in the newly
created tracks table, 1 row in the metainformation table and nothing
else. I started over again and it gets to that point again and stalls.
No indication in the cmd window what's happening. The tray icon will
say it is running but it will not open in the browser.

This is getting very frustrating. I suspect I'm missing something
obvious but I don't know what.

Rob...

If going through the network setup doesn't give you the option to

None. I posted to a PSP thread a few weeks ago and no one seemed to be
running 6.5 (rash generalization: PSP users = WinXP users = Problems
with 6.5; 770 users = Linux/OSX users = 6.5 works fine).

I think the skin should work fine in a non-touchscreen environment,
although I'm not sure the screen dimensions of the PSP will be quite
right for the skin. Don't know until I hear from someone though...I'd
be happy to test this if someone will send me a complimentary PSP! ;)

Anything you can suggest for me to do to troubleshoot this?

[slim] Re: Should crossfading work with synchronised players?

2006-01-26 Thread Michaelwagner

Well, synchronization has been a feature since early in the development
of the Slimserver software.

Cross-fading is a feature that appeared only first in R6 of the server,
corresponding to the SB2 hardware appearing.

Most early adopters had SB1s, or mixtures of SB1 and SB2.

It isn't possible to cross-fade an SB1, and so if 1s and 2s were
synched together, it isn't clear how to do that (or even if it's
possible).

Initially, cross-fade was turned off if multiple players were synched
together. In fact, that's more stringent than is really necessary. If
all the machines in a synch group were 2s and 3s, you *could*
cross-fade. It would take different logic, because the short pause
between songs is used to re-synch all the players, and cross-fading
eats that time between songs. There are other possible implementations
for cross-fading. But no one's ever written the code to work that out.

It doesn't seem to be a priority.

If more people vote for it, maybe it will become a priority.

I already tried turning off all the antivirisu/firewall stuff. No
difference. I don't believe the issue is access to the server. The
problem seems to be that once a connection is made between client and

I run Moose on a separate machine to SlimServer. Moose still occasionally
kills SlimServer for me as well and I'm pointing it at a copy of the db not
the one used by SlimServer.

It's not constant but if it happens it's generally when I start Moose. If I
get over that hurdle Moose and SlimServer generally play happily together.
I've also noticed that rebooting the machine running Moose kills SlimServer as
well. I haven't had a chance to confirm that yet (I should have time tomorrow)
but it's happened on a couple of occasions.

[slim] Announce: squeezeslave 0.2

2006-01-26 Thread rtitmuss

squeezeslave is a command line C program to play audio from the
slimserver. It has not gui so all player control has to be done using a
web browser or another program like Moose.

A new release of squeezeslave is available today, you can download
binaries for Windows, Linux and OSX from:
http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net

This is still early release software so you may find some bugs - but I
have been happily listening to mp3's using it for several days now on
XP. The Linux port (thanks to Duane Paddock) is also known to be good.
OSX works, but is not well tested.

This release supports:
- mp3 playback
- sync with mp3 playback
- password protected servers
- multiple players on one slimserver (use --mac option to set player
mac address)

It does not support:
- flac, aac, wav, etc. (use bitrate limiting to play these formats)
- replay gain
- high quality mp3 playback (mp3 audio is clipped, but still ok to
listen to)
- direct streaming (e.g. internet radio)
- audio looping (e.g. for short clips)
- anything other than 44.1Hz streams
- built in ssh tunnelling
- cross fading
- gain control

Feedback welcome.

Richard

Do you know which protocol you're using?

So I see, well spotted, it's a typo.

It looks more like the JVC protocol

Again, well spotted, it is JVC, it's a JVC CD player file I found for

Is the log file you refer to an XPL log file?

Yup, can you help out with the log file above from Slim???

[slim] Re: Multiple song entries in SlimServer...

2006-01-26 Thread Siduhe

What version of slimserver are you running ?

Two general suggestions (in order of preference):

1. Go the web interface, Server Settings and select the one that say
something like "Clear everything and rescan library". Rescan.

If problem persists:

2. Stop slimserver. Delete the entire server\Cache directory. Start
slimserver. Forces a "scan from scratch".

Hope this helps.

[slim] Multiple song entries in SlimServer...

2006-01-26 Thread jcubeta

Hi everyone,

First, my apologies if this is a thread that has already been resolved
somewhere on this forum. If so, then I'm obviously not using the right
search terms. :)

So I have "uninstalled" and reinstalled SlimServer on my RH Linux
machine a few different times (don't ask why. :) ), rescanning my
iTunes library each time. The strange & frustrating side effect is that
SlimServer now thinks there are multiple copies of the same file, when
indeed there are not.

I'm assuming that my "uninstall" is not truly uninstalling
everything...?

Any ideas why this is happening, and how I can "scrub" SlimServer so
that it corrects my library?

I really love this product, but can't & won't use it if I can't fix
this.

Thank you in advance!
James

This definitely sounds like a Windows networking issue. As someone
else stated, Windows can be configured (and I believe configures itself
by default) to dial up if it detects you are not connected to the
Internet when you try to access a URL.

It sounds to me like SlimServer is trying to load the resources it
needs - web pages, images, etc. - and Windows is interpretting that as
an attempt to access the Internet, so Windows dials the modem.

There is a way to tell Windows not to dial-up if it detects you aren't
connected to the Internet. I -think- it might even be filterable by IP
address or subnet or somesuch, but I'm not sure.

If you download DBD-mysql-2.9008.zip you'll see it contains a file
called DBD-mysql-2.9008.tar.gz. Unzip that file and you will see the
all files with paths under /blib/arch, blib/html and blib/lib.

I assume that's what you're looking for.

Alternatively you could start slimserver using your ActiveState Perl
installation. In a command window type:

cd "C:\Program Files\Slimserver\Server"
slimserver.pl

You need to keep the command window open in the background for
slimserver to continue running.

Thanks, but I've already done that. The module's installed in a
sub-directory of my Perl installation. Slimserver doesn't 'see' it for
some reason.

The wiki on the SD site says the following:

This doesn't make any sense. You get a zip file but nothing that maps
to these instructions. Anyway, sorry to be a pest!

2006-01-26 Thread jasenj1

Couldn't you do this the other way around? That is, use iTunes to play
the stream that SlimServer is generating?

Connect iTunes to the SlimServer stream
http://ip.address:9000/stream.mp3

Then use the Squeezebox or the Web interface to control what is being
played.

I think this should work for everything except music purchased from the
iTunes Music Store - to play those through SlimServer you'll need to
burn to CD and then import from the CD. A pain, but at least it's
doable.

(I don't have my Squeezebox yet - it's on the truck to be delivered
today! But I listen to my home library from work through iTunes and I
think it works similarly to what you're trying to do.)

Hi Robin,

Thanks for your support, and for reading through that very long post!

If you're interested in seeing how this would work (I have not yet
implemented the "albumid" part (my step 1) but that would only be
needed if you organize your music some bizarre way), set the "Group
compilation albums together" parameter and then apply the patch below.
You'll have to wipe the cache.

Now back to getting my "sort albums within Browse Artist by year"
patch working in 6.5.

cheers,
greg

I'm not actually using XP but I have installed Perl modules on XP before
using PPM

IIRC, you do something like this:

In a command window:
cd C:\Perl\bin (or wherever your Perl is)
ppm
install DBD-mysql
exit

Ah sorry, I had somehow got the impression you were a mac user from the
reference to airport!

I suppose it is what you want then, although the SB will actually be
playing music!

Therefore if you want to run the script you would need to install
ActiveState Perl (which is free),
Then you'd just run it - double click should work after the Perl
installation.

I must warn you I never spent a lot of time testing it!

That does indicate the problem. However, I have ActiveState Perl

Where is the wiki you refer to?

Hi James

Thanks for the reply. My comments:

1) I use Windows XP Pro Sp2
2) The plug-in might work: I stream to the AE from iTunes; SlimServer
mirrors my selection, and displays that on the SB3. Isn't that what I

Looks like your Slimserver is talking to the database ok, but does
appear that one of your tracks is overflowing the track length field
(secs) field in the database - wierd.

I have seen a couple of posts elsewhere about issues running Slimserver
on MySQL 5 - is it possible to try it on MySQL 4.1?

Cheers,

The SB3 has been my first foray into wireless. Safe to say, I learned
a bit on the way! I had a problem initially with interference from our

that. Everything works great and now my wife and I fight over the

It won't - as I discovered recently in a different context, Zone Alarm
Pro is sneaky. Even if you disable it at start up / shut it down, it is
still active in some way (a True Vector component which steaths ports
and acts as a firewall) and prevents internet connections that it
considers suspicious. There's a lot of stuff about this on the Zone
Alarm forums.

The only solution is to uninstall / test / reinstall.

Re: [slim] How I got SlimServer v6.2.1 working with MySQL

2006-01-26 Thread Mr Nõu

Dave Strickler wrote:
Warning: I am a PostgreSQL guy, and I don't know beans about MySQL. I
also don't profess to be a Linux expert. I can get around in SuSE, but
I'm no expert with it either.

Understanding that, I thought I would let you know how I got MySQL
working, as the Wiki was a great help, but wasn't complete (perhaps I
should post this there).

First off, I use SuSE, which has to be the easiest Linux in the world.
To get MySQL up and running, I start Yast (their installer GUI), picked
MySQL, and it installed it for me. No CDs, and a 2 minute install. Did I
mention I love Yast? ;-)

Then I used WebMin (already installed on the server) to make sure MySQL
was indeed running. It was. I used WebMin to create a user in MySQL
called "admin", and gave it all the privs I could find.

Now I looked at the DB/Tables I would need to create in MySQL.
Unfortunately you need to do this by hand, as SlimServer doesn't do this
for you when you switch over. Thankfully its all laid out in
/usr/local/slimserver/SQL/mysql in a small text file called
dbcreate.sql. Note that this file isn't part of SQL, it's just a text file.

Then I fired up MySQL by typing "mysql -u admin" which logged me into
MySQL as Admin. While inside of MySQL, I needed to create the DB, so I
typed "create database slimserver;" to create the database. And then
"use slimserver;" to start using it.

Now I needed to create the Tables, so I typed "\.
/usr/local/slimserver/SQL/mysql/dbcreate.sql". Note the backslash-dot in
the beginning. This tells MySQL to read in the text file as a series of
commands. This will return a bunch of OKs, indicating it has created all
the DB/Tables. Now type "exit ;" to quit MySQL.

Now that the DB/Tables are all set up, follow the Wiki's instructions
about altering your slimserver.conf file. It will need the username, in
my case "admin", the password for that account that I set up when I
created the account, and the name the of DB (I used "slimserver" above).

Once the config file is edited, stop Slimserver and restart it. Check to
see that its still running after 5 seconds. If not, the config file
isn't set right to get into MySQL. Check for typos, and also check the
privs for the MySQL account (I used "admin"). I had these set wrong on
my 1st attempt, and Slimserver wouldn't attach to MySQL, and also would
silently crash.

If Slimserver stays loaded, go get a cup of coffee and let it
automatically read all your songs from disk. I have about 12k of them,
and it took under 2 min.

No go into the web interface, or fire up your SB, just like normal.
You'll notice both interfaces are fast, especially the web interface.
Zoom - this back-end with MySQL is super fast!

I hope this long email helps out someone who's struggling. Trust me, in
the end, its worth the struggle!

Thanks for the write-up. I've tried making the switch before without
luck, You encouraged me to try again. I've followed instructions on wiki
and here in forum, but my scan process only manages to successfully add
17 from 20.000 tracks. Error reports are similar (below) for every
unsuccessful track. This is W2000Server, Mysql5.0 and latest ActiveState
Perl. How do I know if my process uses "my Perl", or the libs included
in the slim_perlscript.zip distro?:

Thanks a million,
peter

'fraid so.. Actually it wouldnt be too tricky to add to folder scan, but I was
wondering if the whole playlist aquisation might be better handled via the
CLI, so if you saved new playlists, they'd appear without a rescan, etc..

I actually spotted this flaw the other night as I've switched back to folder
scanning after I upgraded my server to MySQL.. Watch this space i
guess.. ;-)

I agree. Greg's explanation expresses perfectly how this should be done.

Two copies of the same track from the same album, but in different
