[slim] Re: I made an ad for Squeezebox

2006-02-17 Thread EnochLight

On the 3rd paragraph you didn't capitalize the "S" in Squeezebox, and
you made it two seperate words when it should be one. Also, the 3rd
paragraph feels grammatically cumbersome - you used multiple commas
when a semicolon might be more appropriate. For instance, you said:

"Fit your Squeezebox anywhere and plug it into your stereo, its highly
polished material against a brushed metal face is a joy for the eyes,
as well as the ears."

You might also try:

"Fit your Squeezebox anywhere and plug it into your stereo; its highly
polished material against a brushed metal face is a joy for the eyes -
as well as the ears."

Anyone care to comment on that suggestion? My English is a little
rusty... ;-)

I also agree that the red on gray is hard on the eyes.

Again, this isn't attacking you - just meant as constructive
criticism...

I don't mind taking a survey, but why does SlimDevices think I'd be

Not cool.

Question: Do you have a 770?

Ben,

This skin is really terrific -- the Search function allows me to
maintain domestic bliss in my household since my wife often only knows
the title of the song she wants to hear and not much else in terms of
track information.

One thing I noticed today, which you may know already (and if so, feel
free to ignore this e-mail), is that when you use the Optimized View on
the Nokia 770, the Now Playing page of the skin does not render album
art graphics properly. When the Optimized View is turned off,
everything works fine.

I don't know if Ajax renders this minor issue moot, or if this is just
endemic to the original Touch skin, but I wanted you to let you know
about it (it's literally the very least I can do considering how much
use and enjoyment I get from all of your hard work).

Cheers,

Vik

[slim] Re: Last.fm or Pandora?

2006-02-17 Thread fairyliquidizer

I find the Last FM music choices hit or miss but hope this will improve
as it monitors my listening more. Pandora gets off to a good start and
that's as much as I can say at the moment. However if you set up your
page and explore the features of LastFM (which can be a bit confusing
at first, at least I hope it's just at first) one starts to warm to the
"music community" that they are creating where you can share thoughts
etc by creating pages on artists, or just leaving messages in the
shoutbox, or feedback on artist blog things, or the forum or.

Yeah I'm growing to like LastFM. I've subscribed for 1 month as an
experiment. I might try a month without but it's pretty cheap and it's
interesting.

I must say that I find these extras for the SB like LastFM and
MusicMagic Mixer add a lot to the fun and in the case of MMM ease of
use. I view MMM as the user interface and DBMS that Slimdevices never
got round to adding (and maybe don't need to as they are available with
MMM). I would HATE it if MMM were to one day stop working with SB as it
is a great front end for the back end. It's also so sweet the way you
can use it from the SB remote. Ok, I've gone off topic sorry.

Back on LastFM, for me having plugins not only for SB (AS+LFM) but
Audioscrobblers for Foobar2000 and iTunes make it much more usable.

it's good to hear that it happens elsewhere, and takes the spotlight

[slim] Announce: squeezeslave 0.5

2006-02-17 Thread rtitmuss

squeezeslave is a command line program to play audio from the
slimserver. It has no gui so all player control has to be done using a
web browser or another program like Moose. Run squeezeslave from the
command line e.g. "squeezeslave.exe "

A new release of squeezeslave is available today, you can download
binaries for Windows, Linux and OSX from:
https://sourceforge.net/project/show...roup_id=105169

In this release changing tracks should no longer crash squeezeslave.
I've have also added a volume control and native support for ogg
playback.

HELP WANTED ... to add native wma playback. I did look at this earlier
in the week but could not get the windows wmsdk to link into the code.
It would be great if someone could look at adding support for this.

This release supports:
- native flac, pcm and mp3 playback
- native ogg playback (slimserver 6.5 >= r6293 only)
- gapless flac
- volume (gain) control (linux and osx only)
- player synchronization
- password protected servers
- multiple players on one slimserver (use --mac option to set player
mac address)

Known issues:
- fast fwd/rew do not work
- clicking when changing tracks (on windows)
- volume is not linear (on osx)
- the volume control on linux has not been tested, comments please.
- can only playback on one audio device

It does not yet support:
- replay gain
- direct streaming (e.g. squeezenetwork/internet radio)
- audio looping (e.g. for short clips)
- anything other than 44.1Hz streams
- built in ssh tunnelling
- cross fading

Feedback welcome, as always ...

2006-02-17 Thread verbatone

this is definitely a hack since I'm only slightly aware of what I'm
doing. Please be aware, I'm only slightly aware of what I'm doing, but
I really like the Exbrowse3 skin, so I wanted something, and this seems
to work. So unzip the attached to /server/HTML/ExBrowse3. Restart
SlimServer, make sure the task is really deal in the task manager.

Make sure you have the XML-RPC/JSON-RPC Interface plugin checked or
you'll get a transport error.

Anyway, what these files will do is make a "Home" link on the front
page of the ExBrowse3 screen, when you click it, it opens the
"previous" skin's home screen, where you can access the Plugins.

I'm pretty sure there is some cache memory that's being used for the
previous skin home.html, but in general this works on my comp. I've
included an original version of the files called *_orig.* for anything
bad that my happen, you should be able to restore the skin.

I'll try working on what I can make sense of and see if I can get
something worked out with the caching. One problem is that ExBrowse3
doesn't even have a "home" type page!!! Ok let me know what anyone
thinks

[slim] Re: slow interface response - HUGE libary

2006-02-17 Thread Michaelwagner

Also consider going to the 6.2.2 beta version. They put some code in
there to counter one of the big performance issues of the web
interface, that is, re-counting the number of items in a large library
every time you display a web page.

That line that says "Your library contains 32,000 songs by 3,200
artists" etc.

It was recalculating those totals every time.

Now it doesn't.

For some people, especially with large libraries, that's a big help.

The other thing you should know is that, at the moment, Slimserver
can't make use of your dual processors. Maybe in 7, but not planned for
6.anything. So maybe the operating system will use the second processor,
maybe not, but Slim won't use both at the same time.

[slim] Re: Last.fm or Pandora?

2006-02-17 Thread jmpage2

I have to say that after trying both I really like last.fm better. One
thing that irritates me about Pandora is that it won't let you skip
beyond a certain number of tracks an hour, which is extremely
irritating if you are just listening to new stuff to get a feel for it.

Last.fm sets up a very cool user page for you which shows all sorts of
statistics and lets you custom tag all the music you've listened to.

If you become a subscriber with Last.fm (which I have) then you get
your own personal radio as well as the ability to play your "loved"
tracks whenever you want, also very cool.

Sound quality for last.fm seems slightly better to me too, I wonder if
they are using a better codec.

All in all my enthusiasm for pandora has faded after trying last.fm. I
am very impressed with it.

One thing I forgot to mention is that there are even scrobbler plugins
for iPod, Rio Karma and other music players for last.fm. This is
really cool as when I synch my iPod it uploads a list of all tracks
I've listened to so that last.fm can add it to my user profile.

Something that I recall from my print days, is the concept of "visual

[slim] Support for Allmusic "Syles"

2006-02-17 Thread egd

Hi

I'm finding that using the standard/mainstream Genre classification for
my music is wholly inadequate in that there are many different styles of
music under a single Genre, if I'm in the mood for listening to Nirvana,
that doesn't mean I'm also in the mood for Yngwie J Malmsteen! Most of
my music has now been tagged utilising data from Allmusic.com which
incorporates Style classifications within each Genre. Is there a way
to incorporate using this as an option in Slimserver's functionality,
such that I can select more discrete types of music within each genre,
eg "select all Rock where the style is any of "Singer/Songwriter"
and/or "Folk-Rock".

Any developers out there who are able to write a plugin?

[slim] Re: I made an ad for Squeezebox

2006-02-17 Thread Kyle

The thing that jumps out at me is that all of your text is one size.
There's nothing to attract your eye. Make your slogan much larger so
it will stand out. I also find the text hard to read against the
background. Making it all bigger would help, and you might want to
change the color to something that stands out better. Also, "afresh"
is one word.

EDIT: I don't mean to be only critical. It's a good idea and good
layout. A couple of other suggestions: Make the Slim Devices logo
larger and remove the white line. The logo itself is set off by lines,
so you don't need another one in there.

[slim] Re: Are you willing to pay for a Sirius Radio plug-in?

2006-02-17 Thread GoCubs

It looks like today Sirius changed the URL on where they stream their
Internet channels from. They're no longer doing it "in house"--
probably in anticipation of Stern streams being offered online. As
such, I don't think the current plugin beta will stream properly since
it pulls from the old URL.

I'm pretty sure the authentication has stayed the same, so I should be
able to fix the plugin with no problem. I "think" I have it fixed,
however, I can't test it because I'm over the maximum logins for my
account today...

Also, my local copy now stores timestamped cookie and token
information. This should allow the plugin to reuse them when the
server is restarted (this way with all my restarts I shouldn't get
locked out so often). From here I'll look into the whole hashkey/token
expiration issue.

[slim] Exbrowse3 Track Out of Order

2006-02-17 Thread twynne

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on this - I've searched through
every post I can find on exbrowse3 and can't find report of a similar
issue.

I love the Exbrowse3 skin and have used it pretty much exclusively
since it was released. Unfortunately when I add an album into the
playlist the tracks appear completely out of order (and yes, shuffle is
OFF!) When browsing to an album and selecting it the tracks appear in
order in the left frame, but not once added to the playlist. The
playlist frame has two sets of what would appear to be track numbers,
both different. Is this a known issue, and is a fix available or
forthcoming??

Secondly, (and I did find this reported but no fix) the Download and
Clear links in the current playlist don't work. Download returns an
invalid page, and Clear does nothing whatsoever.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

It's probbaly more of a reaction to Apple and the success they have had
at taking the consumer relationship away from the record companies. As
someone else pointed out, the RIAA are doing their job and representing
business interests, not moral issues. I'm sure they would like to take
it to the level that every person who listens to a piece of music needs
to pay, rather like going to the cinema.

The sad thing is that most people, including me, are happy to pay for
their music. What they aren't happy about is being treated as
criminals, which is what is happening. I don't like copy protection
because it affects audio quality and more importantly labels me as a
thief before I have committed any crime. As for the RIAA arguing that
backups aren't necessary because you can always buy another copy, how
does that fit with their other policy of selling limited editions CDs?
Or deleting CDs from obscure artists because they don't sell in the
millions?

[slim] Re: Last.fm or Pandora?

2006-02-17 Thread Siduhe

http://www.last.fm/subscribe.php#features

I think it kind of depends what you're into. I have pretty eclectic
tastes (although doesn't everyone say that ?) and I have very definite
musical moods. So, I use the Personal Radio, Personal Tag Radio (i.e.
"Saturday night songs" or "songs which use the word serendipity") and
the Loved Tracks radio most, hence subscription is essential for me.
I'm also a big fan of Discovery Radio
(i.e. play me stuff I've never heard before). All of these are
subscriber benefits.

I think Pandora's great too, but less flexible - that said, I've spent
a lot more time playing around with LastFM. At £ 18 for one year, it's
pretty good value too.

One thing I should mention to be completely fair, is that LastFM has
had a lot of downtime over the last year whilst they essentially try to
turn a hobby into a business, upgrade kit and generally professionalise
the whole thing. It's been pretty stable recently, but I suspect
Pandora may be a bit more reliable overall.

[slim] slow interface response - HUGE libary

2006-02-17 Thread moonsammy

my library contains 5704 albums with 26028 songs by 4549 artists is ~120
gigs in size and Slim server 6.2.1 is very slow.

i have a Dual 3gig Xeon box, 2gigs of memory and an old school slimp3
with the latest FW running at 128Kbs. i am on an Ethernet network and
the cables are fine.

my system's processor load is never an issue and slimserver is using
about 97 megs of memory out of 2gig available and the total system
memory usage is about 500 to 700 megs.

problem is the Slim server web interface is so slow sometimes. nothing
is scanning, just poky and unresponsive. so is the slimp3.

what are the suggested performance settings for a large library like
mine?

i have it set to:
Artwork - off
Build Items Per Pass - 25
Prefs write interval - 0
Keep Unswapped interval - 30
Database Temporary File Tuning (SQLite)- Use RAM
Database Cache Size Tuning (SQLite) - 30,000

and TCP set to:
Maximum number of TCP sockets to read per pass: 20
Maximum number of TCP sockets to write per pass: 20
Maximum number of bytes of audio data to send to player in a UDP packet
(SLIMP3 only): 350

thanks,

[slim] Squeezebox crashing on power up, won't connect to server

2006-02-17 Thread netim3

My SB2 and SB3 both exhibiting the same problem in my new network
environment.

I try to connect them and they fail to find the server. Subsequently,
whenever I power down and then back up, the SB's don't start up
properly - the scrolling "Squeezebox" startup screen stops half way &
disappears. The only way to get it past this problem is to hold down a
button on the remote when I plug in the power cable, but then the SB3
simply jumps to the "Set Up Networking" menu item, but does not respond
to the remote control. Even if I disconnect the SB from the network,
and after a lengthy power down, I still get this problem at startup.

About my setup:

SlimServer running on a MiniMac.
Using a 3com switch connected to a Linksys router handling DHCP.
The switch plugs into a patch panel which feeds CAT5 around the house.
The SB3 is in the kitchen, connected to the other end of the patch
panel port, about 15 metres of cable away from the patch panel.

I know the connection from end to end is good, as I can plug a pc in
and connect back via the switch to the router.

Any thoughts on how to diagnose/fix?

many thanks,

Natan

[slim] Re: Last.fm or Pandora?

2006-02-17 Thread Siduhe

I find that LastFM plays me a slightly wider variety of music, but often
from less "popular" (not in the pop music sense) bands. I also find
LastFM a bit more flexible because of the multi-user tagging system, so
I can say...play me all the songs that people have tagged as "good songs
to listen before going out on Saturday night". The downside is that
same flexibility - people's tastes vary wildly and you sometimes hear
stuff tagged as "breaks" that is very far from what you consider
"breaks".

Pandora seems rather better moderated to me (but I rarely hear things
that surprise me on it, whereas that often happens with LastFM).

Obviously Pandora is US only (but there are ways to get round that
apparently).

Also, you don't have to subscribe to LastFM to get the benefits - there
is a totally free option, but you don't get things like personal radio.

Oddly enough, though, in the MGM vs. Grokster case last year, the lawyer
for MGM had this to say:

"The record companies, my clients, have said, for some time now, and it's
been on their website for some time now, that it's perfectly lawful to take
a CD that you've purchased, upload it onto your computer, put it onto your
iPod."

So who the hell is the RIAA really speaking for?

It's sad that the RIAA has their heads so far up their backsides that they
don't realize that they're being so zealous about a position that they've
ceased to represent the views of the very entities they claim to represent.

I'm sorry if the RIAA thinks I should have to buy a CD to play in my car
and buy a download for my Squeezebox/iPod/laptop. That just isn't going
to happen, no matter how blue they turn from holding their breath.

I have no problem paying for music I listen to, but thanks to the RIAA, I
now purchase very, very little music that comes from RIAA member entities,
because they refuse to be in touch with reality.

[slim] Help Me Choose / Setup SqueezeBox + Wireless Remote for Wife and Kids

2006-02-17 Thread bradesp

I have wife and teenagers that demand easy and simple.. go figure :-)

I have a denon receiver in a hall closet, near our kitchen and family
room. Our music is played to speakers in both of these rooms. My
music server is in a back bedroom. I use 802.11g throught the house.

I need a setup that allows my wife and kids to use a slick remote
device in the Kitchen/Den that provides a decent display of album art,
etc..

I have no issues configuring the SB to connect to the Denon receiver.
Likewise, no issues with my PC Music Server (in a back bedroom). My
confusion is related to the wireless remote for use in the kitchen /
den. I've seen the remotes listed on the SB website (pda's, etc.), but
don't have a clue what might be the "best" approach for keeping things
both slick, simple and reliable for my wife and kids.

Can someone suggest a short list of devices and required software to
make this kind of setup work?

Also, I need the remote device that we use in the Kitchen/Den to allow
basic control of the denon receive (On/Off, Volume). It would be cool
if like the Harmony Remotes, I could program the remote for "Music
Activity" and by hitting "power on" button on the kitche/den remote,
the denon powers on and selects the input required to receive the SB
stream. Then the remote allows me to navitate and choose my music
selections.

Sorry for being long winded, just wanted to be clear about what I'm
trying to acomplish.

All Sogo's Appreciated!

[slim] Re: RIAA is evil

2006-02-17 Thread SMWinnie

Disclaimer: I am not your lawyer. I am not an expert in copyright law.
This message is a gross overgeneralization.

Put this in context. The RIAA and MPAA do not like the results of two
court decisions, Universal v. Sony, 464 U.S. 417 (1984) (the "Betamax
Case") and RIAA v. Diamond Multimedia, 180 F.3d 1072 (9th Cir. 1999)
(the "Diamond Rio Case"). Put simply, the Betamax Case is what you
point to when defending time-shifting and the Diamond Rio case is what
you point to when defending place-shifting.

Not only do the RIAA and MPAA dislike those decisions, but there's good
reason for the RIAA and MPAA to think that they might be able to get the
results changed. For one thing, the courts in question were (mostly)
doing statutory analysis. That is, the courts were deciding what
Congress meant and if you lobby Congress to change the rules (a la the
Sonny Bono/Mickey Mouse act) then the court decisions go out the
window.

There is a theoretical limit below which fair use cannot go
("constitutional fair use"), but I believe the consensus view is that
your TiVo and your FLAC rips depend on statutory, not constitutional,
fair use and can be taken away by Congress.

Evil? The RIAA is doing their job. They represent "rights owners"
whose interests are served by increasing the effectiveness of copyright
and decreasing the extent of the public domain and fair use rights. Our
legal system pretty much assumes that when groups have competing views
of what the rules should be, they will each advocate their own position
and the resulting conflict of ideas will end up generating a fair
result.

What makes this type of conflict seem unfair isn't law, it's economics
- specifically the concept of a collective action problem. When the
conflict is between a single person or small group on the one hand and
a large group on the other, the result tends to favor the small group
because (1) it's harder to organize the large group and (2) there is a
greater tendency in the large group to count on the rest of the group
to protect you. (The latter problem is "freeriding." Have you donated
to EFF this year? I haven't.) If you can solve this, you may get the
Bank of Sweden prize that Mancur Olson didn't live long enough to be
awarded...

This does *not* mean that you should just hang your head. Recognize
the RIAA's or MPAA's comments for what they are - an attempt to couch
the issues in the terms most favorable to their clients. Once you do
that, it becomes much easier to give those comments the appropriate
moral weight (i.e., zero) and engage in this type of discussion with
your friends and family.

Funny, but I was noticing this morning (whilst building a rather large

There is no Pandora plugin, Slim are officially adding support for
Pandora to SqueezeNetwork, and the two seem to have some kind of cross

For historical reasons, a bare number in the genre field is
interpretated as a short cut for one of a short list of "standard"
genres.

It isn't clear what semi-colon support (a non-standard Slim thing) has
done to this support.

You may be tripping over this "feature".

In this old standard, 12 was "Other". Getting any "Other"s where you
weren't expecting it?

Ahh...

Well, that's a problem because I'm right on the verge of needing
glasses, and from where I sit, the screen is kind of blurry blue-green
goo.

I have been pushing and holding, so that's probably the problem.

I don't think it is "obvious" at all.

"Might" is the key word here. I could not find any data sheets or
lifetime specs on Noritake's web site, so I would not be willing to
assume any longer life.

Thats because you can either add at end of list or add next ... I seem
to recall that a add-and-hold gets you the latter, which is what you're
reporting.

Try a little experimentation, and have a look in the default.map file
for clues.

Either that or there's a bug and you're getting the wrong mode!

[slim] Multiple genres in tags

2006-02-17 Thread Howard Darwen
OK ... this is going to be a hard one to pin down I think. But any
help/advice appreciated.

I have recently started using the multiple items in tags feature with a
semicolon (";") delimitor. In a few istances this is in the artist field,
and that appears to be working well.

In my genre field however, complete chaos seems to have broken out :). I
can't see any pattern to the behaviour, though it is consistent in that
specific files are similarly tagged after any rescan. It's just the genre
tags are not what I am expecting. I get the following types of behaviour:

- Some files are genre tagged correctly (both with single and multiple tags)
- Some specify no genre at all (even in cases where there is only one value
and no delimiter)

- Others specify just one of the multiple values in the file

Like I said, the bahaviour is consistent in that a specific file will
display the same characteristic (i.e. one of the above) after a rescan.

Some observations:

- In certain cases I have gone completely over the top and have 4 or 5
values in the genre field (separated by semicolons). Maybe there is some
limit I am not aware of???
- One of the genre values is "12'" so I can easily access all 12' singles i
have ripped. Not sure if the ' character could be causing an issue, i.e.
only letters an numbers supported???
- This one is really odd, but when I am rescanning to build the database,
the genres seem to be coming up correctly. I can only explain this with an
example: Several files have "Tech House" as a value. Typically, the actuall
field value would be "House;Tech House;12'". Now, during the actual process
of scanning, if I select "Tech House" from within "Browse Genres" it shows
me an increasing number of files and everything looks OK. But once scanning
is complete, if I select "Tech House", I get just a single song ... the same
one each time. I have looked at the tags with my tag editor and they all
seem fine (but there are a lot of files).

Am running a recent 6.2.2 nightly on windows, but have been having the same
behaviour for some time.

If anyone has any suggestions, even just suggestions of how I migh be able
to troubleshoot, it would be appreciated.

Many thx.

Erm ... sorry for the long post.

Howard.

I agree with you totally, but most of these people still shutdown and
power up their computer when they need to use it. They think that
having the computer off for the time when they aren't using it will
save lots of money. Over a year, it might save them $120. I guess
that's good enough for them, but I've tried to tell them startup of
the computer was hard on it, just like starting up a car. Get over
that hump first, and there's a chance.

I can't understand why people think plugging in a stereo to
some speakers is so hard. Trying to get some plugin installed that's
not officially supported by slim, while not challenging, is sort of
intimidating. I guess they just do, and it's our jobs to help slim
make the install easier and sell more units!

Probably not, since my dad is what I would consider a "normal Joe"
who bought a computer specifically to use my slimp3. Doesn't know
crap about computers, and he's lucky that he even knows how to turn
one on.

Funny, I don't recall saying "drunks" in my assessment, nor do I recall

including any specific type of worker (amusing you include "telecom"
in with welders as the same type of people) when I described the
stuff I was thinking about.

So it's equally nice to see you wearing your prejudices on your sleve
as well. I seem to recall teachers and priests as one of the highest
convicted users of said specific activity.

Either way, I'm sure Dan's efforts of a wizard for setting up
slimserver
will certainly help Slim Devices break into a market where they already

have a very good presence.

The old VCRs are obviously also using old designs of screens, so who

just like motern TVs and plasmas are less prone to burn in etc. So it

Wouldnt be too tricky to add a jukebox mode to Moose, in fact it was
something I was thinking about.. Fullscreen window with two controls:
a list of album artwork for all artists to the left, and a list of
tracks for the
selected album to the right.. Some buttons, some Now playing information
and some secret key shortcut to swap back to the normal UI..

I'll keep you posted.. As it is, Moose's library window is pretty simple
to use in a party environment, although wouldnt solve your 'people hitting
play' problems.. Worth giving it a spin though, it's free.. :-)
