[slim] Media Center version of Softsqueeze?

2006-04-04 Thread SteveWong

I've recently gone nuts with my Squeezebox setup at home: its made a
dream of whole home audio a reality. I installed 4 SB3's and am
ordering a couple more (if they will still honor a 100off2 promo still
showing on the site).

One thing I love and it saves some money is that Softsqueeze works very
well and allows rooms with PCs in them to also synchronize the music.
My office runs it now, and I want to extend this to the Media Center PC
which powers our TV as a DVR. That way, we can still run a picture
slideshow and have the same music playing as the rest of the house, via
the existing AV setup.

I can run softsqueeze in the background (either headless or full) but
there's no easy way to control it via the Media Center's interface and
running to the PC to stop or start it via the Slimserver web interface
is a pain.

Any chance of getting a MCE-friendly version of Softsqueeze?

- Steve

Is this one of the Intel based Mac computers? 6.2.1 won't be available,
you'd have to give 6.2.2 a try as only the recent builds have universal

[slim] Re: Consistent Crash with MIP 1.6b3 and 6.2.2 nightly

2006-04-04 Thread erland

Could you try with the TrackStat version attached with this post, it
contains some more log messages which should make it possible to see if
there are TrackStat code executed at the moment or not.

Also, in the log it looks like a track is removed in the following
line:
2006-04-04 06:12:45.1008 _hasChanged: removing
[D:\Music\FLAC\Múm\Summer Make Good\08-Away.flac] from the db as it no
longer exists.

Do you know if you were playing this track or just about to start
playing it when the crash occurred ? If you are not sure, maybe you can
look for this line the next time it crashes and see if it is the current
playing track ?

I am not sure, but I suspect that the problem is related to the removed
track in some way.

ok.. Here's a plugin that fixed my problem..

I've never written any Perl before.. so be kind. I used the Win32::API

SetThreadExecutionState().
The plugin simply checks all clients every minute, and if any of them
are playing it resets the standby timer using the Windows method
above.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

[slim] Re: Rescan Music Library Takes Forever.

2006-04-04 Thread rudholm

I've seen some weird behavior as well with this version: 6.2.2 - 6804 -
Linux - EN - iso-8859-1

When rescanning the library from scratch, I noticed the db files
stopped growing. After a few hours I looked to see what it was doing
and it seemed to be stuck in a recursive symlink while trying to walk
the directory stucture. Odd thing was, it was doing this well outside
the music library area. I deleted the recursive symlink and it then
just sat getting the current time of day over and over.

I killed slimserver and restarted it. The db file(s) it created seemed
to be ok because it didn't complain.

Hmm.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to double-check the tags in an alternate

Also check your music folder for recursive shortcuts, shortcuts
pointing to a deleted folder or files, etc.

Is your hard drive unusual at all? Seems like it's something in the

I have a very large (9,000 Album) MP3 collection. When I "Rescan Music

even when I only add a few (<20) Albums.

MP3 files are VBR and stored on an external 4 bay enclosure. It takes
my backup software only minutes to find any additions.
Any suggestions? Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. It's to the point

[slim] Wireless Bridging

2006-04-04 Thread Andyoz

I have wired SB's running off my home ethernet. My house is wired up
for it so I have avoided any wireless networking.

Was wondering if I were to buy a wireless SB and run that wired into my
ethernet, can I use the wireless cabability of the SB to connect to my
wireless laptop/pda (to act as better interface to Slimserver). It
would be handy for parties and outdoor use to have a wireless
connection between my laptop and one of my SB's.

The manual explains how wireless bridging can be used to connect wired
items (i.e. Xbox) into a wireless network using the bridging function.
I want to do it the other way round - connect a wireless device into my
wired network.

Am I being crazy?

Those spikes are 100%. You are running out of CPU cycles. And you
shouldn't be, your server is fast enough.

Now nearly the same thing happened to me with 1500 songs and a Pentium
4 2.8 GHz. I wasn't listening to music at the time, but Browse Music
Folder caused SlimServer to become completely unresponsive and even
crash a few times.

I think the problem was I didn't have my music arranged in the expected
Artist/Album folder structure. That brute-force listing of ~1500 tracks
was enough to bring SlimServer and my P4 2.8 to its knees. If you have
5000 songs arranged in a single folder, it will be much, much worse,
especially on your PIII 800 MHz.

So are you using an Artist/Album folder structure?

Fortunately if you don't, the solution is simple and free with Mp3tag.
I'll post details about it if this turns out to be the problem.

The only things *running* are an HP fax program that seems to keep
coming back after I disable it and Avast anti-virus, but when I
disabled that it didn't make a discernnable difference.

I also tried changing the the "items per page" in the server settings

dropouts when I am listening to uncompressed tracks and browsing

Got an RMA.

Yay.

Since I'm apparently the only one who ever had this problem, I will
probably forever be known as "the burn-in guy" to SD support staff...

I certainly don't agree with this. How about providing a command line
interface and nothing better to make development easier and to make it
possible to operate SB from a one line display?

Threads appear here regularly about the inadequacy of the web
interface. The same response always appears: we love the philosophy of
a web interface UI. SS needs a well designed UI not a doctrine.

So, I'm flying blind here. You might try this, which will not do
anything destructive:

use File::Find;
use Encode;
find sub {($newname = decode("iso-8859-1", $_)) =~
s/\P{IsASCII}//g &&
print "$_ would become $newname\n"
}, "your_directory_here";

This will just print out a list of proposed renamings. Let me know
what happens. If it's to your liking, you can make the corresponding
change to the other script and actually rename the files.

[slim] Jumpy songs?

2006-04-04 Thread pablolie

What can cause the SB or SS to skip from a song to the next? This is
running 6.2.1 (again) after running on 6.2.2 for a while. Could it be
the new firmware is incompatible with 6.2.1? Signal strength, network
health and server response time are excellent. The music files are
error free, too. It's doing it a lot, right now it's plainly
unlistenable.

It seems like your setup will work. So once you get your SBs, test with
one SB (IR receiver) jacked into your ir zone controller with the other
SB (RCA out) feeding your receiver. You could sync or Shadow Play
(plugin) depending on your testing. BTW the AMX NetLinx plugin looked
way cool.

Good luck

Are you sure you don't have anything generating interference in the house?
Once or twice a week, my girlfriend initiates a viscous DOS attack on
our wireless network by heating up something in the microwave. The
wireless phone used to cause problems as well, but I replaced that
with a 5.8Ghz model and that fixed it.

When I suggested upgrading SS above, I forgot we were talking about a
PC-to-router connection problem. Still the insight that an
authentication restart seems to be what reconnects you makes me think
you should experiment with enabling a different wireless security
method on the access point. If a less-secure method proves reliable,
perhaps you could compensate with MAC address filtering.

Sure, I tried a file named "è'tormento.flac" (no quote)

This is just one file name tried to shorten with the error. The

jcyr,

You might be encouraged to see the recent activity on the bug mentioned
a few posts up. It has been assigned to the newly hired Richard
Titmuss:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_activity.cgi?id=2514

Also, the following list (which as yet has few updates since the very
well-received firmware updates 35 and 36), shows that WPA-AES and
WPA2-AES are supported on at least one router model, which suggests to
me that progress is being made on AES.

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RouterStatus

I realize how frustrating a wait like this can be, but Slim Devices
recently hired world class QA manager (Christopher Owens) and has in
other ways made very apparent their seriousness about supporting as
many wireless configurations as possible as quickly as possible.
Although it has taken some time, it seems to me that all along their
efforts have been deliberate and entirely transparent.

Be sure to disable allowing connections to other networks. WIndows
Zero Config. can attach to a (momentarily stronger) network when your
network connection drops. You want to ensure that *only* your network
is tried. By default, any access point is a candidate.

To boost your hope, since its debut, I've never lost connection with my
Belkin Pre-N, and it runs 24x7. Knock on wood, the thing has been rock
solid.

Interesting. That prompted me to find out just what Repair might do
other than renew DHCP. It does indeed do more! A link with the complete
list is below, but it seems clear that the key is this:

(The following is pasted from an earlier post of mine.)
You may want to try upgrading to the latest nightly of 6.2.2. A number
of firmware revisions have been made to correct problems with various
wireless configurations. There is a list of wireless configurations
that have been tested.

"Repair" is friendly-talk for "perform a DHCP release followed by a
DHCP renew". Perhaps you have more than one device acting as a DHCP
server. At any rate, one way to ensure you don't need to keep hitting
repair is to assign your computer a static IP address, thus bypassing
DHCP. Here's how:

- Open a command prompt (Start-->Run-->type CMD, click OK).
- Type "ipconfig /all" and hit Enter. Leave this window open.
- Open Network Connections (it's in Control Panel).
- Right-click on your wireless connection and click Properties.
- Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list and click the
Properties button.
- Select "Use following IP address" and "Use the following DNS server
addresses".
- In each of the fields on the General tab, enter the corresponding IP
address from the ipconfig listing in the command window.
- Click OK, and OK again, and close the control panel and command
prompt windows.

If you do this, you will need to prevent IP address conflicts (more
than one computer/Squeezebox/etc. trying to use the same IP address).
One simple way is to assign the computer a static IP that is higher
than the ones the DHCP server is assigning. In other words, if ipconfig
showed that your computer had been assigned the address 192.168.1.2,
assign it 192.168.1.100. The other way is to assign static IP addresses
to your Squeezebox and any other computers on your home network, and
keep a list so that you do not accidentally use the same address
twice.

Good luck!

That's interesting. I may be over my head here, but I'll try to look
into it. It might help if you can find a way to send me exactly what
is in the fatal filename: dir >file from the command line might do it.

Great news!
Richard, I frequently use SoftSqueeze- its been a Godsend - its allowed
me to test out Slimserver before I go and buy a squeezebox, and I use to
listen to music remotely.

All the best,

[slim] Slightly different wireless network problem!

2006-04-04 Thread neilcoburn

I realise there are loads of threads re network problems, though these
all seem to refer to problems of Squeezeboxes connecting wirelessly to
routers/access points.

I have a slightly different issue. Since moving house, the PC running
Slimserver is a long way from my incoming internet connection so I've
added a wireless card to the PC so it can connect to the router
wirelessly. The signal strength is 'excellent, 54 Mbps', but it still
loses the connection a few times a day. It usually reconnects by
itself, but about once a day needs me to right-click and select
'repair'. My question is, is this the best I can hope for from a
wireless connection, or is it reasonable to expect this set-up to stay
connected for many hours and days? If these drop-outs are inevitable,
I'll invest in a Homeplug set up. Any thoughts welcome!

I am a user of Media Center. Fine application. I am also a Squeezebox

personally have no use to have Media Center control my Squeezebox.

And of course as soon as I made this change it all started working via
SSH. Looking at it now it seems such an obvious mistake to have made
but I just couldn't think where it was going wrong. Many thanks for
putting me right with that part of the configuration.

I'll close this down tonight but at least I had it set in the router to
only allow access from my work PC so no-one else could get in.

Thanks again.

I tried and it worked with certain file names.

But when I tried with file names like:

Monteverdi ~ Le passioni dell'anima (Monteverdi) ~ 08 ~ Sì dolce
è'tormento ~ Classical ~ 1999.flac

It returns with the error message:
"Malformed UTF-8 character (unexpected non-continuation byte 0x20 after
start byte 0xec) in substitution (s///) at test.pl line 4."

So effectively the filename crashed the Perl script :)

Any ideas? I really appreciate the help. I am getting there.

Re: [slim] Re: Access to SlimServer 6.2 from the internet

2006-04-04 Thread Michael Herger

Home PC has the Slim and SSH server installed on it and the XP firewall
has been configured to allow SSH(22) and Slimserver(9000&3483) through.

Router has been setup so SSH & Slimserver ports forward to home PC.

Work PC is running Putty and obviously Softsqueeze.

Only open ssh - you will be tunneling slimserver protocols through the ssh
channel.

message ‘Failed to connect’ so I then started using Putty. I have it
configured so that local port 9000 connects to
madeupname.homedns.org:9000 and local port 3483 connects to
madeupname.homedns.org:3483 (I’m using the DynDNS service).

Have those ports tunneled to your slimserver's internal address, not the
external: localhost, if the ssh server is running on the same machine as
slimserver. Or "yourslimserver" if this is your server's name. But don't
use the external address as SSH will then try to loop your data out the
house and back in through the router.

Everything seems to be in place and working as I can connect to my
Slimserver via a browser using madeupname.homedns.org:9000 and if I

Don't do this. Don't open these ports to the net as _anyone_ could connect
there, having fun waking you up at night with some songs from your
collection.

[slim] Re: Throw away your computer - ReadyNAS as music server

2006-04-04 Thread slimditty

I should qualify my original post, perhaps. I, too, have run all sorts
of different music server scenarios. To address the issue of noise and
power consumption, I used a VIA processor fanless mini-itx machine (I
think it was a Hush technologies box). But the reason I am such a fan
of the ReadyNas is primarily because it provides a great deal of
functionality while reducing the complexity of running a PC
(particularly one running windows). With all the
storage-attached-to-computer scenarios I used, I always found that
something would eventually fall down in the chain of products that had
been strung together. For example, an OS problem, or a hardware
component problem that had little to do with the storage components, or
a corrupted driver, etc.
As for electricity costs - yes, I was using a fast P4 server, which was
not ideal for this task alone. I figured out the cost by turning
everything off for a day, except the machine and looking at my
electricity consumption for that day alone. I did this over a three day
period and took an average.

Perhaps the ReadyNas is overkill for most people and not appropriate. I
like the other features it offers - such as streaming video service. I
like to put my video collection on the box and serve it to different
players in the house. I like the fact that I can connect to it overseas
using an encrypted https connection, browse and upload files, connect to
the music server, stream video, etc. If I wanted to attached a terabyte
of storage to anything else without putting it inside a computer (so I
could easily connect it to another computer if the first one died) -
I'd have to set up an external disk RAID box - which is, in effect,
what the ReadyNAS is. So, to me, it's a much simpler and more elegant
scenario.

It's also easy to administer from a browser (which controls all the
functions of the device) and, most importantly, the infrant support
team keep adding features to it on a regular basis. A lot of companies
don't. Anyway, that's my humble opinion on it all.

[slim] Re: Access to SlimServer 6.2 from the internet

2006-04-04 Thread eagleeye

I’m doing my head in trying to get Softsqueeze to work across the
internet via SSH and have read (and tried) all the suggestions on here
but with limited success so hope someone can suggest a ‘fix’.

First of all my setup:

Home PC has the Slim and SSH server installed on it and the XP firewall
has been configured to allow SSH(22) and Slimserver(9000&3483) through.

Router has been setup so SSH & Slimserver ports forward to home PC.

Work PC is running Putty and obviously Softsqueeze.

First of all I tried configuring Softsqueeze to use the built-in SSH
but just could not connect no matter what I tried. Well it did actually
start talking to my home PC because I got the usual warning messages and
was prompted for user name and password but after that it just gave the
message ‘Failed to connect’ so I then started using Putty. I have it
configured so that local port 9000 connects to
madeupname.homedns.org:9000 and local port 3483 connects to
madeupname.homedns.org:3483 (I’m using the DynDNS service).

Running Putty connects and allows me to login without a problem and
running netstat –a on my work PC shows that a connection has been made
to my home PC on port 22. I then run Softsqueeze which has been
configured to localhost in the network section and no SSH but all I get
is a repeated message saying lost contact with Slimserver.

Everything seems to be in place and working as I can connect to my
Slimserver via a browser using madeupname.homedns.org:9000 and if I
configure Softsqueeze to madeupname.homedns.org in the network section
it connects and work perfectly. The drawback with that is that it is
not running via SSH.

At this stage I just cannot think what more to try so any suggestions
are most welcome.

I think his question was the opposite of what you answered.
His question is:
Why is "now playing" in the menus when it's already a button.

May be the opposite, but it's still the same "problem": there are options
available through the menu and from the remote. Whatever way you look at
it.

I've used it - because I wrote the plugin ;-)

The SlimServer plugin for Meedio basically acts as a replacement front
end for the SlimServer web interface (controlling players, building
playlists etc).

Meedio does come in a free (express?) edition and a paid for edition -
I've never used the 'express' version so I don't know if the plugins
will work with it (I'm suspecting not).

Cheers
