[slim] Remind me what I did about slimserver.log

2006-04-16 Thread trebejo

Ok, time for you to play Vulcan mindmeld and tap into my sleepy memory
cells.

Some time ago, I noticed an outrageous growth in the file
slimserver.log, due to my unwitting attempt to slap id3 tags on flac
files. I was older then...

Among my decisions at the time was to relocate said file so that in
future sneaky inexplicable symptom scenarios, the disk that would be
filled to the brim would not be the system disk.

I'm not sure that I want to change that decision just yet, but I am
puzzled at the fact that no matter how thoroughly I wipe out the
slimserver install (something I've done a few times), the log file
returns to that non-standard location where I relocated it (even when
it is wiped out during those re-installs).

Looking through the files where I expect to find this setting, I see no
mention of slimserver.log. I'm beginning to think that the squeezebox
has even greater control over my conciousness than I previously
realized.

If you know the answer, please ease my mind and remind me of how I
managed to relocate slimserver.log. I'm running a Mac, OS 10.4.latest,
fwiw.

Cheers,

Ariel

[slim] Ready NAS NV vs. Terastation Pro vs. Terastation vs. ??? (Storage Solution)

2006-04-16 Thread AndreasG

Hi Everybody,

With a music library of 600GB that is still growing, I finally made my
decision to go for a dedicated RAID5/NAS solution to store my files. I
find that handling all those external harddrives is just too much
clutter, and the RAID5 configuration will give some protection against
hardware failure.

(I know that a a RAID does not protect against data loss due to human
failure, so there will be an additional backup, but I still think that
the additional safety of a RAID makes sense)

So here are my requirements for the NAS storage solution:
- at least 4 discs, RAID5 configuration
- works with Mac and PC
- does not have to be absolutely silent, but quiet would be welcome
- I don't plan to run SlimServer on the NAS, it will just be used for
storage
- use of SATA discs would be welcome for future upgrades

My options:
1. Infrant Ready NAS NV: 688 Euro empty + 320 Euro for 4x250GB or 400
Euro for 4x300GB (total price 1088 Euro for 4x300GB config)
2. Buffalo Terastation Pro: 849 Euro with 4x250GB, not available empty
(???)
3. Buffalo Terastation 739 Euro with 4x250GB (P-ATA only!)
4. ??? please recommend other options ???

My thoughts:
- The Ready NAS NV looks great and has received a lot of praise here.
It is more expensive than the Terastation Pro but can be bought empty,
so I could use a 4x300GB configuration. Is it worth the extra money,
even if I don't plan to run SlimServer on it?
- The Terastation Pro is cheaper and seems to have all the features I
need. Mac OS X is not officialy supported -- will it work with my Macs?
It is not available empty, this means I would have to use the 4x250
configuration (I would like to have 4x300 if possible)
- The normal Terastaion seems really reasonably priced at 739 Euro
for 4x250... However it only uses PATA harddisks (not SATA). How sure
can I be that PATA harddisks will still be as cheap as now in 3 years
(the problem with a dying technology is that the price drops stops and
eventually things can become more expensive again as they get rarer...
I plan to use this thing for a few years...).

Any advice or recommendations would be very welcome...

Andreas

AFAIK the performance of the Terastations gigabit connection isn't much
better than a good 100Mb (~ 10MB/s). OTOH I've seen results of up to
25MB/s for the ReadyNAS. This might be worth the price difference.

...thanks for your reply Michael.

Yet another question out of curiosity: Is there any way to make such a
thing wireless? I know this is not practical for all uses (i.e.
transferring large amounts of data), but if you only want/need music
playback, wireless bandwith should be sufficient.

Is it possible to connect something like an Airport Express to the NAS
and then connect to it wirelessly?

You'd need a wireless bridge (eg. a SB2/3 ;-)), often sold as Game
adapter, or an access point which you can put in bridging mode.

thanks again. I just read on the Infrant / ReadyNAS homepage:

 Wireless ready.
Because an ReadyNAS solution can be typically smaller and more portable
than comparable NAS, you may have a tendency to take it with you to show
off your new collection of games, music, pictures, or videos. Why carry
a cable with you and be restricted to putting the ReadyNAS close to a
switch, away from the action? Carry a USB wireless controller and cut
the cord, because with RAIDiator, the ReadyNAS can be wireless.

Sounds interesting.

when the owner of slimserver (i.e. the universal set) will tell me that
I no longer have access to my music as I desired it. Incidentally, that
is essentially what happened when that lovely and well-designed iTunes

One more comment on the amateur vs. pro question: when it comes to

Daveo, I suggest that you take the offending unit and your offending

swapping and configuring. If you can get it going there on your

there is some local interference and you will have to try different

fine with 2 xSB2s. I have a Belkin Access Point to boost the signal

I also have this model with an AP downstairs in the front of my house

It has worked flawlessly for me since FW18. The signal stength has
varied a little since FW28, but FW41 seems to be back on track.

To do a straight reboot of the SB, press and hold the power button. To
do a factory reset (back to default state) hold down the add/+ button
while unplugging the SB from power and keep it down when you plug power
back in.

There is a known problem with mac addresses getting corrupted somehow
and preventing connection to the network (even without filtering turned
on) - it's never happened to me, but it may be worth checking in your
case. The mac address should be printed on the bottom of your SB.
When you reset the SB, scroll to view current settings. One of these
should be the mac address that the SB thinks it has - is it the same as
the one printed on the bottom ? If not, I think you press right to
change it manually.

[slim] Slimserver player graphics not always showing

I'm including a partial screenshot which shows what I'm seeing.

Any ideas?

[slim] Re: Anyone here using Panda Firewall?

2006-04-16 Thread Siduhe

Which version of Panda - Titanium or Platinum ?

If Platinum, there's loads of information on the Panda support site
about how to configure the firewall - have you looked at that ?

For example:

Panda Wrote:
To configure the permanent firewall protection in Platinum Internet
Security and allow access to that computer from other computers in your
network, carry out the following steps (only on the computer or
computers that have the firewall installed and enabled):

 1.
[b]Right-click on the Platinum Internet Security permanent
protection icon in the system tray and select Configure automatic
 protection.
 2.
Click on Configure in the firewall protection.
 3.
Click on the Security tab and make sure the network card/cards of
the computer are selected in the list of network adapters. Also make
sure the box Allow me to access shared folders in other computers is
 checked.
 4.
 Then, select the Access tab.

 *
Click on Configure in the Advanced connection rules
 section.
 *
 Select Add new rule.
 *
Assign the rule a name that corresponds to the task that it
carries out and select the action Allow communication. (In the Network
adapter section you must select the computer’s network card/cards).
 *
Click on the Protocols and ports tab

If you read this in conjunction with the link that NWP gave you, it
should be fairly straighforward to configure your Platinum firewall.

If Titanium, there's far less info around because the product is more
an antivirus and spyware with a firewall tacked on. In this case, go
to Settings, Automatic Protection, Firewall Protection, Connection
Permission Settings, and scroll down until you see Slim.exe and change
this to inbound and outbound. Does that help ? If you don't see
Slim.exe, try shutting down and starting up Slimserver which should
force Panda to show a pop up window asking you if you want to connect
(so long as you have Warnings ticked in the Firewall Protection
page).

You may be able to tell that I swapped away from Panda about two years
ago, due to the lack of configurability of the firewall. It's supposed
to be a lot better with the Platinum offering now, though

[slim] Re: Remind me what I did about slimserver.log

2006-04-16 Thread danco

I found some modifcations (not SlimServer related) in a .profile file
somewhere in my home folder. You could make all invisible files visible
(use TinkerTool) and just look at any that give the vaguest sign of
being relevant.

On a different but related matter, does slimserver.log just increase
without limit, or is a new log created when it gets big enough? I see
that my log is over 100Mb and began last November. I can't see the need
of a log that goes more than a couple of weeks back.

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it

D'oh - I hate to post a need help message - especially considering the
fact that the skin worked perfectly to constol SoftSqueeze before my SB3
arrived... but...

I'm using the 4/15 build, and while I can pick a song with the 770, the
now playing sceen simply says playlist for this player is empty. I've
checked and made sure that the 770 is looking at the right ip (I set up
a static IP for the machine with slimserver), and the playlist screen
correctly lists all the songs in the playlist (same as the slimserver
page when viewed through the pc), but I have no now playing image or
controls. What's even more odd is that the album art image and song
details come up in the playlist list when I click the song, and I can
switch tracks with the play icon on the detail view - but then it kicks
to the now playing screen and the empty error message comes up again.

Any ideas, Ben or others???

Thanks!

[slim] Re: Remind me what I did about slimserver.log

2006-04-16 Thread trebejo

Tinkertool! Cool little app, thanks.

Naturally, for us terminal users there are no hidden files, as long as
we use ls -al.

I just ran grep lim .* and grep log .* in my home directory and got
nothing relevant.

The thing is, I could have sworn that it was a line in slimserver.pref,
but no, it's not in there.

btw the log file is indeed monotonically increasing, which also bugs me
as it seems like there should be an easy way to set a cap on it. Once
again, consider the abused example of the older, allegedly
computer-clueless user that uses the squeezebox and one fine day
discovers that his system drive is no longer accepting any bytes. That
would be a very very bad scenario, probably requiring a trip to the
local apple store to talk to someone at the genius bar.

Anyway, I periodically cat /dev/null onto the log file and leave it at
that. Last night I made a point of actually reading the thing and I was
able to clean up my music files of unwanted .cue confusers and non-flac
files posing as such. So there is some useful information in it, but
its growth could use better monitoring.

Aha!

(User: mazzare) (Dir: ...mazzare/)$ ls -al
~/Library/Logs/slimserver.log
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root staff 49 Jan 5 22:27
/Users/mazzare/Library/Logs/slimserver.log -
/Volumes/Gypsy2/Users/Shared/Music/slimserver.log

So I *did* do that on purpose.

Let's do the easy thing and blame Finder. You go to Finder, type slim
in its little search box, and it will find everything... except this
soft link. I don't know why.

Sometimes OS X is not the best unix...

[slim] Folders under Playlists?

2006-04-16 Thread timjon

Hi all,

I just updated slimserver from 5.1.1 to 6.2.1. I have a nested folder
structure in my playlists folder - so I might have, say, a folder
called Pop playlists, which might contain 80s pop music, and then a
subfolder under that for Electronica, which in turn would contain
several playlists.

Under 5.1.1, this worked fine - but under 6.2.1, when I select browse
playlists (on the web interface or the hardware player) I just get all
the playlists in one flat list, with the folder hierarchies missing.

I've been looking for options in server settings for this, but can't
find one.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Tim.

[slim] Re: Slimserver

2006-04-16 Thread funkstar

Not that i know of. There have been combinations of Slimserver and
SqueezeBox firmware versions that have contained bugs that some noticed
effected the audio quality, but i don't think any of these are
outstanding bugs, so the recent builds should be just as good an any
others.

Slimserver doesn't really do anything to the file anyway. If your music
is in one of the native formats (Wav, FLAC, MP3, WMA) then the SB is
doing the decoding and sending to the outputs. If your music is in a
non-native format (AAC/M4A, ALAC, WMA Lossless, Ogg, etc) then it is
the third party decoder that would effect quality rather than the
server or firmware. Bear in mind that the bundled third party decoder
that was included with a particular slimserver release, may have
bugs/problems outwith the control of slimserver itself. But again, i
don't know of any problems with the current release or beta builds
(current release 6.2.1, daily nightly bugfix build 6.2.2, development
beta 6.5)

I know Michael sugested your post in the Slimnetwork board wasn't
appropriate and the General board is ok for something like this, but
the Audiophile board might have been your best bet :)

[slim] Slow startup and scan

2006-04-16 Thread timjon

Hi,

I just updated from 5.1.1 to 6.2.1, and the server is taking forever to
start up and scan my music library. I've got around 6000 tracks (about
600 albums), and slimserver is running on a linux server, P3/550, 128
Mb RAM. It's currently been at 95% CPU for the past 45 minutes.

I don't have any dodgy recursive links in my music library (no links at
all, in fact). 5.1.1 would scan this library in five minutes or less,
iirc.

Incidentally, if I try to access Internet Radio, it seems to crash the
server as well - slightly annoying since that was the main reason I
finally got around to updating.

Any ideas? Is this server just too old / slow to cope?

Cheers,

Tim.

2006-04-16 Thread mortod

This is a great plugin - I can't believe its such a recent innovation
though as I would have thought power management quite fundamental to
SB.

Just one observation though - I have my XP standby timer set to 15
minutes, and sure enough the PC normally goes into standby 15 minutes
after the last touch of the keyboard. But if the PC has woken due to
WOL from the SB, it then goes into standby just 2 minutes after the SB
playing is stopped - not 15 minutes.

If you haven't, you might turn off the other SB3 (the working one)

If the bad one suddenly works, then you should go throught the
reset/mac address drill with the other box.

And do all of this with all security and mac filtering turned off.

I've solved it too by performing a clear library and rescan everything

Before that, the individual files that would not play had no attributes
against them when viewing them in the web interface. Now, all

[slim] Re: iTunes volume adjustments (song check)

2006-04-16 Thread jameshavelock

It seems the best option is to use iVolume - this is an advanced version
of soundcheck.

http://www.mani.de/en/software/macosx/ivolume/index.html

Note it is not free but does have nice features such as linking sound
check to an album so all the volume increases are relative per album.
And it says it also does this:

iVolume improves the built-in 'Sound Check' function of iTunes to have
your songs actually play at the same volume level.

iTunes uses a very fast algorithm to quickly analyze the volume of its
songs. It's fast, but it's not very accurate. iVolume corrects the
volume information that iTunes has calculated with better values.
Therefore an algorithm is used that is oriented on the perception of
the human ears. The result is a huge improvement of the 'Sound Check'
function. You never have to readjust the main volume again when playing
back your songs in random order. This is perfect e. g. for music on
partys or hearing songs in random order with the iPod.

iVolume does not re-encode your audio files, so there is no loss in
quality. Technically it looks for the tag named 'iTunNORM' that iTunes
has put into your songs and iVolume just replaces the embedded value
describing the volume of the song with a better one.

iVolume works closely with iTunes. Instead of reinventing the wheel or
complicated handling with files at the filesystem level, iTunes is used
as the interface to select the songs you want to adjust with iVolume.
After selecting songs in iTunes, just switch over to iVolume and hit
the 'Adjust' button to make the selected songs to the same volume
level.

Find more information about the loudness analyzing algorithm used in
iVolume here:

Okay...got it reproduced just fine now...

It looks like this problem exists outside Nokia770 skin land...I did a
full subversion update of my slimserver tree, restarted slimserver, and
now I have exactly the same issue on the 770-- playlist for this player
is empty.

I guess the first place to look is the prototype.js patch that went in

Very troubling that I'm only seeing this on the 770 and not on Firefox
*or* Opera on my desktop.

I'll keep this thread posted as I debug further.

I figured it out...changes made to EN/html/global.js to support IE
better. Now you have a window on why I hate IE so much.

I don't have a fix yet...toying with the idea of re-forking global.js

[slim] Re: Problems!SB3

2006-04-16 Thread JJZolx

Daveo Wrote:
OK The plot thickens! If I disconnect the working sb3, then the bad one
will work, but I then get exactly the same problem with that one and it
will not work with the other box connected. Thanks for your help so far,
hopefully we're getting there, any ideas as to why this happens?
Do you know, when both SBs are running but one is failing, if they've
both been given an IP address and are on the network? Or, put another
way, do you yet know where the connection is failing?

Where is your DHCP server - on the wireless router? As someone else
suggested, do a full power cycling of the router. If that doesn't
immediately clear up the problem, check the wireless logs and the DHCP
client information. You may find a clue as to what is failing.
Examine MAC addresses in that info carefully.

You need to figure out the point where the SBServer connection is
failing: at the wireless connection, a failure in DHCP, or a failure
connecting the Slim Server.

[slim] Re: Audioholics Review

2006-04-16 Thread Jeff

I was especially amused when the reviewer mentioned:
About the only suggestion I can make for the product is that a single
rack space version with discrete power controls and RS-232C control
might attract more of the custom install crowd and could be worth a
look. I could see the need for a single rack space version (that was one
advantage of the Squeezebox 2 over the Squeezebox 3), but the RS-232
control would be just lame.

I make heavy use of a NetLinx automation system (that would be the
custom install crowd). RS-232 is a damn fine control option - *IF*
there's nothing better.

In the case of the Squeezebox, it can be fully controlled via the CLI
(with discrete power ON/OFF). Given very rich control via TCP/IP (built
into most control systems these days), RS-232 would simply be a more
expensive, slower control option. Why use RS-232 when TCP/IP is there,
already built into the product? :-)

It's been mentioned here many times, but here's my result of
controlling the Squeezebox via the CLI and TCP/IP:

http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=62827

I even grab album art from the SlimServer software so it can be
displayed on the touchpanel. Can't do THAT with RS-232! ;-)

[slim] Re: How to listen to AirAmerica

2006-04-16 Thread baconrad

Thanks for the responses. Not sure why I didn't see the previous posts
on it. I'm now happily listening to AirAmerica. My wife, however, is
not as happy.

For whatever reason, I didn't find it on my SlimDevices picks. I got it
to work as a playlist using the following url (found in the attached
files from the response):
http://tinyurl.com/6ambb

This is the other choice:

[slim] Can't connect SB1 to Linksys WRT54G Wirelessly

2006-04-16 Thread dennitzio

I'm setting this up for my mother; she had it working a couple of years
ago but now we have a whole new setup and she wants it to work again.
The Linksys router works fine, and is running the latest firmware. I
was able to get the SB1 to connect to the server over Ethernet (the
server is running wirelessly) and update to the latest firmware.

But when I try to connect to the network wirelessly it simply times out
- I don't even get an option to choose DHCP or fixed IP. I've rebooted
many times, both devices. Any ideas? I am leaving tomorrow AM (CAL
time) so I'd love any ideas that I can try (esp. if they don't require
a lot of questions).

We're running Macs entirely, all using the latest OS and SW (v.6.2.1
server, v.40 firmware) and I'm not having any other problems than this
one setting. I can't leave it running off Ethernet; the box just isn't
near a wire.

Ideas?

No problems here with a WRT54G v4.0 and 3 SB1s. Maybe
try turning off WEP.

[slim] Re: Audioholics Review

2006-04-16 Thread Jeff

Wow, I'm surprised. I sent a message to Clint, the reviewer, with my
feedback about RS-232. He said:
Thanks for the feedback - I did not know that. Mind if I add that as an
addendum to the review with a credit to you?
That's kinda cool. I corrected him, and he was immediately willing to
post an addendum to clarify the situation. I didn't expect that ...

I'll send him mortod's comment as well ...

Ben, I'm confused - you found the missing icon issue and fixed it or
just the empty playlist issue?

Thanks!

I was referring to the 'playlist is empty', but I think I may have fixed
the icon thing as well. If you can, please give it a try and report
back. If it doesn't work, could you right-click on the
text-that-appears-where-an-icon-should, copy the image location, and
paste it to your reply? Thanks!

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't open file from

2006-04-16 Thread Wirrunna

Clear library and rescan didn't fix it for me either.
Stopped SlimServer, deleted the C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Cache\slimserversql.db and started SlimServer
again to let it do a complete scan, playing music at the same time.
However, SlimServer service stops and has to be restarted every now and
again. Anyone else get this during a rescan ? Maybe it is trying to
open a track (file) that it doesn't know about yet.

SlimServer 6.2.2 Firmware 41, Win XP.
