Re: [slim] Is anyone else having shoutcast problems?

About two days ago this stopped working on the squeezebox.

Shoutcast seems to be experiencing some server troubles:

Integrating into Slimserver would mean my main media database would work
with the PSP.

I only use iTunes for tag editing as I don't have an iPod.

It would also sve me running 2 http servers.

[slim] Is anyone else having shoutcast problems?

2006-04-18 Thread reduakm

This is what I have found. If you use the sb3 to search playlists it
seems to use a URL such as
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunin-stationpls?id=3499&filename=playlist.pls.

About two days ago this stopped working on the squeezebox. It won't
play most stations. If I un plug the sb3 and plug back in, it works
better, but a few hours later - nothing. I can't use a station as an
alarm because I don't know if it will work or not. But If I connect to
slimserver via web browser amd click on a shoutcast station it plays
fine. What I noticed is then when you do it this way it uses am ip
address instead of a url, like this: http://207.200.96.227:8038, which
works fine.

I immediatly thought this was a DNS issue and switched to several DNS
servers - No luck.

I tried playing directly from Winamp - No luck.

I tried playing at work on our 100 megabit internet connection - no
luck.

So I can't be the only one having this problem can I? It used to work
great - I mainy got this for internet radio, and I have not been able
to use shoutcast for two days.

Hurmph!
Mike

I don't think you ever said why you just don't tag the files and be
done with it. Unless you're using a format that doesn't really support
tags, such as WAV. If you can write a program to populate the database,
then you could likely find a tagging library or utility to just as
easily let you transfer that data to tags in the files.

But I have to agree with you... It would be nice if SlimServer could be
set to not muck with the library data except when explicitly told to do
so. That way we might write our own library scanning utility and not
have to worry about the data being changed by Slim Server when we're
doing something as (seemingly) benign as browsing in one of the user
interfaces.

The cutting out and failing to find slimserver bit sounds like the
wireless connection was being interfered with somehow. Possible
culprits include: another wireless network near yours on the same or an
overlapping channel (download NetStumbler to check out wireless networks
in your area); a cordless phone (runs on 2.4ghz too) or a microwave in
use; also, if you have your router set up near your TV / DVD / Tivo

2006-04-18 Thread Gooner

Most of the time my SB3 plays ok - I've had it for 4 days Tonight,
I had friends over, extolled the virtues of squeezebox etc, then failed
to play any music for about 2 hours.

I'd choose a cd and it would keep cutting out. The squeezebox would
state it was unable to find Slimserver...

I tried powering off the PC, router, SB3, etc, to no avail
whatsoever

This was really frustrating.

At one stage, it would connect to Internet Radio and nothing else. It
wouldn't connect to my PC.

My PC is connected by wireless link to the same router and I could
browse the internet throughout this episode...

Any ideas? I'm planning a house-warming party in May and was going to
rely on the squeezebox for a big party playlist but if I'm not going to
get a connection it will be really embarrassing

[slim] Streaming to PSP

2006-04-18 Thread oreillymj

Ok, so I know the primary purpoe of Slimserver is to stream to a
Squeezebox, but it would be nice to be able to stream to my psp as I
work around the house.

I tried modifying the handheld skin to use the RSS functionality in the
2.6 firmware on the PSP, but I always got an error.

I originally thought that this was due to using a non-standard port for
http, but now I don't believe that to be the case. I think it's down to
the http responses from Slims web server.

Last night on digg, I found a link to this little utility which creates
a small http server on 8080 which streams from your itunes libary.
http://www.skattertech.com/2006/04/stream-itunes-library-to-psp/

It seems to be written in perl and uses the HTTP::Server CPAN module.
Would be nice if it's functionality could be integrated into
Slimserver. Wonder would the author open source it?

IT can be the wifi. You can test that by using a cable instead.
Apparently the SB turns of Wifi.

You can also try to move the powersupply further away from the

I have an SB2 sitting a few inches above my Technics DAB radio - and the
reception doesn't change whether or not the SQ2 is on.
I know that the Sb2 and SB3 are not exactly the same - but I would have
expected the wireless characteristics to be pretty similar ... with the
SB2 and its external antenna perhaps being even noisier.
The Technics radio is just using a dangling wire antenna (I'm in London
with OK reception).

Maybe try fiddling with the channel on your wi-fi router and see if it
makes any difference.

Since you list two OSes here I assume you're browsing to it from another

Is there sufficient network bandwidth to get these images to load?

Also you're using Windows Server 2003, which is unusual. I believe it
should work but there may be some issues which aren't often encountered
because there are very few installations in a home environment. A forum
search would help here except it doesn't seem to be working for me at

If you're using SlimServer as a service you may want to give it higher

Yes, that's for sure.

Several other thoughts on this:

- a PC and an SB do very different things (general access versus
streaming audio). If you try wireless streaming with a PC that seems
to work fine otherwise, you may be surprised at its poor performance.
I cannot get foobar2000 on my wireless laptop to reliably play FLAC
files stored on my server - I get dropouts and stuttering. The SB does
the same thing without issue.

- a comparable activity, downloading a large file over the WLAN, isn't
really the same at all. If wireless conditions degrade, the download
slows down without consequence because it's all spooling into a partial
download file.

- a PC has much greater resources than an SB does, which allows for
sophisticated connectivity software that masks problems. This software
isn't perfect either, just ask anyone using Windows XP wireless zero
config with their wireless NIC's software simultaneously.

- a PC's wireless settings are extremely adjustable while a lot of the
adjustable parameters in a PC are fixed in the SB firmware. Go to the
advanced properties of your wireless NIC and you'll see what I mean.

[slim] Re: Hidden Messages.....

2006-04-18 Thread Mark Lanctot

Certainly sounds like an Easter Egg!

I've never seen it before and it's probably not in the firmware since
the firmware is very minimalist. It's probably in the server where
there's ample resources to do this and there would be no impact on
performance.

Also I can't get the same behaviour with 6.2.2 build 6858 and firmware
37, so I suspect it's the server.

I like seeing stuff like this - shows the developers have a sense of
humour. Not surprising with this company though - ever notice that the
volume goes to 11? :-)

IOW, it could work similarly to how Pandora/SN works, and for similar
reasons.

The only question is whether the two parties are motivated enough to
make it happen. I would imagine that there is a big enough installed SB
base so that it would definitely drive some MLB audio subscription sales
(me for one). And there are certainly a lot of MLB fans out there who
might welcome the opportunity to hear the games without having to hunch
over their computer.

And it would be very cool to see the MLB logo on the SD homepage, right
next to Pandora.

I'll give SpeedFan a try. One of my gripes with AOpen is the sorry
state of their downloadable support files. I flashed the bios of the
replacement motherboard with an allegedly newer version of the bios and
actually LOST some functionality. The old version (which I stupidly
didn't back up) had complete hardware monitoring. The new version
hides all that from the user.

The fan starts out quiet enough, but once the CPU gets up to operating
temp, the fan runs at a very audible level. This is a 1.7ghz Pentium
4M, not the fastest or hottest CPU supported.

2006-04-18 Thread Mark Lanctot

Seems to be a very nice review but there's one big omission - how does
it SOUND?!? :-)

In his Squeezebox2 review, he mentioned that MP3 playback was good but
it was...MP3 playback...and you really needed lossless to let the unit
shine. Very true. Yet he didn't review lossless playback.

He again didn't take the opportunity to review lossless playback with
his SB3 review.

Now certainly there won't be anyone turned off by this review but it
causes some misconceptions. Audioholics is closely affiliated with AVS
Forum and one longtime AVS member asked me why I like the SB2/3 so much
when it's only an "MP3 player".

Foobar2000 definately. Plays FLAC very well, and supports gapless
playback.

Not very elegant UI, but functional.

Otherwise, you could use Winamp, but you'll need to install a plugin to
play FLAC files - available from the winamp web site.

Just want to make sure I understand : how are you using SlimServer's
mp3 streaming ability, I mean which mediaplayer are you using? For
example, are you using Winamp, then "open URL", and dropping that
streaming URL in there? That works well for me. SlimServer will
transcode your FLAC files to MP3. Of course that really isn't ideal,
as you lose all that quality sound!

Ah right. Don't know and can't check as I'm at work at the mo'
Certainly have changed it from whatever the default setting is.

No it's defo mine because it's showing my network name.

OK I'll give that a try when I get home and let you know

[slim] Re: The Worst DB Implementation?

2006-04-18 Thread Malor

It would probably be less work to fix this if you put tags in the files.

The way I'd probably do it would be to determine what information I
already had, and then using an Access script, copy the files into a new
directory hierarchy. (I used to have my hierarchy as
Artist\Year\Album\Track, for instance.) I'd do a copy, if there was
room, so I didn't mess up the working files. It doesn't matter how
nasty/complex this structure ends up being, because it's only
temporary.

Then I'd use Foobar's masstagger feature to populate ID3 tags based on
the directories I'd created in the first step. It's able to figure
out, based on the pathname, what tags to use. This will take some
troubleshooting to get right, but it's not that hard.

Finally, I'd reverse the first step, and put the files back where they
came from. Voila you still have the system you originally
developed, and you also have tags in all your files. Just remember to
tag new ones, and you're gold.

One other thing (non-Firewall related) to check is that you don't have
any of the Security settings enabled in the Slimserver web interface.

Server Settings / Security / Incoming Connections set to Do Not Block.

This caught me out once on reinstalling slimserver and setting up a new
PC.

[slim] Re: The Worst DB Implementation?

2006-04-18 Thread Browny

If you move to MySQL then you could try giving the Slimserver user only
read access to the database...don't know if the code would put up with
this though - its not exactly what it was designed for.

Rather than go any further down this route would it not be easier to
just right a function within Access to shell out and use TAG.EXE to
write the tag information to the files? It would make life a lot
easier in the long run...

[slim] Re: Problems with WinXP Firewall???

2006-04-18 Thread hifisteve

Hi Michael,

Thanks for replying.

Right then, (hopefully) relevant info:

Latest version (i.e. 'official' release not Beta) straight from the SD
site, version 6.2.1 I believe.

Not exactly sure what you want to know about the network set-up but
here goes:

Belkin wireless route and PCI LAN card (also Belkin), WEP encrypted
with dynamic IP address thingy, working on channel 6 (to avoid
interference from other nearby networks). I'm NOT using windows to
manage network settings because the Belkin utility manages to not
randomly drop the connection.

I've got no other firewall software installed apart from XP's own and I
use current AVG anti-virus software.

Internet access is fine and yes, my SB can access the Squeeze Network
OK which is why I assume the XP firewall is to blame.

Haven't tried the uninstall/reinstall of Slimserver yet but this was a
fresh download and install in the first place so would it still help?

Cheers

[slim] Re: SB3 has constantly low buffer.

2006-04-18 Thread Cubed

Not sure - I'm not at home at the mo - I'll check tonight

However from what I can remember, the top summary of the health screen
was all OK except 'Low Buffer' i.e there was never 'Poor response from
server'

However, there does seem to be a whole lot of Perl activity going on
according to my Mac Activity monitor

2006-04-18 Thread Triode

Have you tried one of the latest slimserver builds with firmware 41?
This contains some fixes for buffering.

If not, what does the server response time graph in Server and Network
Health show?
[For info, NetTest actually overreads if the server is running slow,
i.e. it does not count packets not generated by the server as lost]

[slim] SB3 has constantly low buffer.

2006-04-18 Thread Cubed

Hi

Posted this on beginners but no real solution - perhaps more joy here.

Very frustrated due to constant low buffer causing stuttering till
track stops. Internet radio also stutters and stops. Squeezenetwork
works fine however.

Facts are:

Server - Mac G5 with 1GB RAM running iTunes 6 and OSX 10.3.9
Router - Netgear DG834GT set to 'g' only with latest firmware.
Slim - 6.5 however problem occurs on 6.2.1 and 6.2.2
SB3 wireless - 80% signal strength, Network test gives 100% Average up
to 3000.
Music files - AAC,MP3 Lame (average VBR around 250)

When SB3 is switched on the buffer rarely exceeds 5% unless pause is
selected then it fills up immeadiately to 100% then slowly drains till
track is finished and does not refill.

Any solutions gratefully accepted.

You mean "is _not_ working"? Could you please give us the usual
information about your system: SlimServer version, network configuration
etc. Can you access SqueezeNetwork?

Re: [slim] Can't connect from "outside world"

2006-04-18 Thread Michael Herger

I point my player to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9000/stream.mp3
It says connecting...buffering...and then playing, but there is no
sound. It also says "Welcome to SlimServer".

...which means you can correctly connect to your server. Good. Maybe you
missed the obvious: did you add some songs to the player's playlist? You
might need to change the player in the web interface.

In my router i have port 9000 and 3483 forwarded to xx.3

I wouldn't do that: anybody will be able to manipulate your server. And
you don't need 3483 if you don't want to connect a SB or Softsqueeze from
outside your house.

[slim] Windoze XP dropping wireless connection.

2006-04-18 Thread hifisteve

Morning everyone.

Well hopefull this time I'll be contributing something rather than just
asking for help like I usually do...

I had been having the classic situation where Windoze (XP Pro, SP2
fully updated) kept randomly dropping the wireless connection for no
obvious reason and I now seem to have sorted it.

I have a Belkin router and wireless PCI LAN card and I know Belkin get
abuse sometimes but it now seems fine.

Basically I did 2 things; logged on to the router and changed the
channel to 6 from 11 (11 is the default and I can see 2 other networks
on the same channel) and unchecked the 'let Windoze badly managed my
network setting' option on the Belkin software.

Since then I've had 97% signal strength and not a single dropped
connection.

Of course as you'll see from my other post I can't get Slimserver to
start or my SB3 to connect to my PC but at least my internet connection
doesn't keep dropping

[slim] Problems with WinXP Firewall???

2006-04-18 Thread hifisteve

Morning all.

As per usual I'm in need of help again...

I made the (foolish?) decision to rebuild up my PC recently, including
a load of mirrored RAID storage for all my music.

That cause me nearly 2 weeks of keyboard-chewing frustration in trying
to get all the new bits to play nicely with each other and Windoze XP,
but yesterday all finally seemed well until I re-installed
Slimserver

In short my SB3 can't connect to my PC (although it connected to the
wireless network perfectly) and on my PC the system tray just says
'starting Slimserver'

I've read both the SB manual and several threads here but none seem to
offer any answers.

The fault seems to lie with the Windoze firewall (XP Pro, SP2 with all
the trimming) as before I 'improved' my PC I was using Zonelabs
security suite and it was fine.

For various boring reasons I'd like to stick with the XP firewall and I
wondered if anyone ever worked out how to get it to cooperate with
Slimserver.

Incidentally, under the exceptions tab in the firewall setting, the 3
specific Slimserver ports already seemed to have been configured
automatically but it still is working...
