This is major. I never figured there would be such a simple, clean
solution. Thank you very much.

I have just had a little while to try out SoftSqueeze, but I can see
that it will meet my needs. I had never tried Softsqueeze before mostly
because its description was just a little too abstract for my limited
product understanding. Thanks for opening my horizons.

2006-05-18 Thread bklaas

hi GeeZa--

I'm the Nokia770 skin guy, so I'll answer to that and let others talk
about the rest...

You'll need Slimserver 6.5 for the Nokia770 interface. Pick up the
latest nightly build of it from here--
http://slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/6.5/
You might as well do it now...it's free! And you can stream directly to
your 770 before your squeezebox even arrives:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimserverAndNokia770

also, subscribe to the rather ginormous Nokia770 thread here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369

that thread has become the de facto standard for announcing changes and
enhancements to the skin.

Also, remember that you can access *all* slimserver skins simply by
fully qualifying them. This way you can use Nokia770 on your 770 and a
different skin, e.g. KDF's excellent Fishbone, on a laptop or PC.
http://localhost:9000/Nokia770/
http://localhost:9000/Fishbone/

good luck with your new toy!
#!/ben

Finally, After trial and error, it started working. Don't know exactly
what I did if it may offer help to someone.

1) installed the fonts described here

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=15573
and I've restarted everything. Nothing worked.

2) I've installed slimserver version 6.3. That didn't work either
3) I've installed slimserver 6.5b1, after that slimserver wasn't
starting. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled, and voila, everything
works perfectly both SB3 and slimserver shows russian correctly.

after running "slim --d_graphics", it shows that its arialuni.ttf(the
one that comes with Ms Office) has been loaded.

What is the app? Any chance that it "listens" on any of same the TCP
ports that SlimServer uses?

Try running SlimServer from the command line. I'll bet that it fails
due to the same conflict and you'll then be able to see the error
message.

[slim] New user alert!

2006-05-18 Thread GeeZa

Hi all,

Just wanted to say that I ordered my Squeezebox this morning and am
very much looking forward to it arriving. Giving up iTunes after all
this time (about 3-4 years) is going to be a big change for me. :-) But
I'm looking forward to pastures new and finally having decent remote
control of my music (wake up Apple, Front Row isn't it!!).

So can anyone advise this n00b on essentials? I've already been told
that AlienBBC and SongScanner are must-haves. Plus I do (as chance
would have it) own a Nokia770 so I guess the skin for the server
interface is also a must. Also any potential traps/things-to-watch-for
for someone coming from OSX iTunes? My music is mostly Apple Lossless,
AAC, MP3 and AIFF. Actually one question I do have is what people have
found the best method for re-ripping protected AAC files? Obviously I'm
going to need to convert all mine.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. One of the key decisions for me choosing a
SB3 over the Sonos (which I *almost* bought - booo!) was the
comparative friendliness, openess and general knowledgeability of this
forum (I've lurked for months). So I hope once I'm up and running I'll
also be able to contribute. :-)

Very easy to do what I think you want - run SoftSqueeze on the PC and
sync it with the SB3. In case you haven't come accros it yet, you
reach SoftSqueeze via the Help page of the main SlimServer window.
Once you have it running on the PC you select it as the player in the
SlimServer web interface drop down list of players and open player
settings. Under Audio you will find the options to synchronise with
your SB3.

[slim] slimserver 6.2.2 on windows xp fails to start as a service

2006-05-18 Thread kiboko

My slimserver 6.2.2 resently stoped working as an XP service recently
after a reboot. I now get the following Event App error:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following
information is part of the event: Can't call method "PushSelf" on an
undefined value at /PerlApp/Slim/Utils/Misc.pm line 132.

The really old thing is that if I try to run the slim.exec file in the
server installation folder, in a cmd shell, the server runs. But does
not run for a "net start slimserver" or the Service console

Any ideas on what i can do to resolve the problem

Anthony

[slim] Re: Going to do an ABX this weekend between ALAC and FLAC

2006-05-18 Thread mrtaber

Thanks, Cepheid. Yes, I was aware of the ALAC and the FLAC bugs (I
voted for the one!). I'll mainly be listening for decoder differences.
I don't have golden ears (I'm 48, so silver...perhaps tin by this
time), though my brother does.

My main concern (if you can call it a real concern) is mov123. What
exactly does this do? Does it do the decoding itself? Or (as I
suspect) does it pass the data off to the actual decoder (Quick Time in
ALAC's situation)?

I'm seriously considering ALAC (multiple iPods, building a complete
Apple solution at home). That's why I'm doing the ABX. My FLAC sounds
very good. I want to make absolutely sure that, for my ears, I'm not
stepping down with the ALAC/mov123 combination.

I ought to start another thread about how much my Squeezeboxes have
changed music listening at my house. Before, digging through 100's of
CDs for something to listen to, etc., etc. I just quit, basically. I
listened 99% of the time on my iPod(s). Now, I have music on all the
time--especially with MusicIP Mixer's kick*ss playlist creation. I
love my 'Boxen!

Thanks,
Mark :)

Just so you know, AIFF and WAV are both uncompressed formats, and
they're both just wrappers for PCM data. The difference is that WAV is
little-endian while AIFF is big-endian, and they use different headers.
The data they contain should be identical however. (And when I say
identical, I mean actual identical bits, just in a different
byte-ordering. ALAC and FLAC are not identical although they should
decompress to identical files, but AIFF and WAV are, essentially, as
close as you can get to being identical without actually being
duplicates.)

If you hear any difference between the formats it would be due to bugs
in the decoders, not differences in any of the file formats. Do know
that there is a bug that affects ALAC files that causes the first few
tenths-of-a-second to be cut off from songs. A similar bug affects
FLAC that causes the last fraction of a second to be skipped.

you can set digital out to be fixed in player settings. I'd advise
spending some time with the wiki and the faq while you wait:

[slim] Signle FLAC/APE/CUE

2006-05-18 Thread lovemov

While waiting my hardware to arrive, I'd start to play with the
slimserver.
90% of my music are classical, so I prefer than to be a single image
file, which also plays fine in foolbar or winamp. I have been reading
the forum, looks like there is lots of problems with cue file handling.

I really want to keep the existing images, and still have the flexibity
to pick tracks easily within the image. What's my best solution? I don't
mind doing some bit of covertion jobs.

[slim] Going to do an ABX this weekend between ALAC and FLAC

2006-05-18 Thread mrtaber

I know, I know, they both are lossless. However, ALAC is transcoded on
the server to AIFF, while FLAC can be transcoded to WAV on the server,
or decoded directly on the Squeezebox.

It's the transcoding (using this 'mov123') that I want to test. Can I
hear a difference? My brother (an audio producer) will be setting up
the playlists for me--and he's going to let me set up playlists for
him.

I don't know why I'm even posting this; I guess, since I love my
Squeezeboxen, I hang around this forum alot, and I felt like sharing ;)

If anything interesting comes up, I will post that, too. I don't have
an audiophile setup, by any means (I use the Niro [as in Niro
Nakamichi] little surround sound setup he's selling these days). It's
quite good, actually, on jazz and classical; it requires some
adjustment for dense rock, electronica, etc. And it is really nice on
movies, without devouring my whole living room in cables and
equipment.

Mark :)

2006-05-18 Thread aubuti

What version of slimserver? I had the problem the others described when
I ran 6.2.1 (also on Ubuntu 5.10, but that's just coincidental). Like
them, getting rid of playlists eliminated the problem. Since upgrading
to 6.2.2 it hasn't been a problem for me, even after creating new
playlists.

2006-05-18 Thread methane

I'm seeing this problem now. Or at least a similar one. I just ripped
all of my CDs to FLAC using my Linux PC and my windows laptop. I don't
see a pattern, but some of the CDs come up with "No Genre" when looking
at the tracks on the SlimServer. I've tried retagging these files, and
I do a clear rescan of the library every time I try to fix them. But
they keep coming up with "No Genre." Did you ever find a solution to
this problem?

I'm running the Slimserver on Ubuntu Linux. Breezy.

Well I'd opened a ticket with support concerning this issue and they

then they closed the ticket. So far it's just a few of my cd's that
are affected with this problem so I can jsut rip those to aiff for
now.

The last e-mail i got from support stated that "From what I understand,
the developers are reviewing the details for an upcoming update."

We'll see what happens.

Thanks for everyones input and help.

I've seen this with 6.3 - I think more than before but who can really
tell.

In one instance, server health was running and I noticed that the timer

The server running this (WXP) is NOT busy - it runs slim and eudora
and, at the time in questions, nothing else.

..my SB3 has just started demonstrating this behaviour. I've had it for
about 3 weeks and it has only recently started behaving like this. Most
of the time I just have it connected to Squeezenetwork, with my PC
switched off. It is the only device on my wireless network. The screen
sort of freezes or stutters, all remote control commands are ignored
then all seem to happen at once!!! Any ideas???

[slim] Re: Squeezebox keeps dropping out

2006-05-18 Thread gutted

I also have an SB1, and when I first got it I encountered exactly the
same problems as you (e.g. the intermittent "reboot" of SB).

Even though my wireless signal strength was very high, like yours, I
still put the problem down to interference. Indeed, trying different
wireless channels affected the frequency of the reboots.

Given that I'm UK based, I can use channel 13 (not available in the
US). I've found this to be by far the best and most stable channel for
my location. I've also got a pair of +5dB antennas on my wireless
router to try and pump out a stronger signal and overcome some of the
random "blips" that kill my SB1. I've not had problems for quite a
while using this configuration. I still get the occassional drop-outs,
but it's limited to once every couple of weeks now - rather than the
initial once or twice per hour.

At the time I was debugging it, I couldn't detect any other wireless
LANs in the area - I think one of our neighbours has a cordless phone
or something :( Since then, however, I've started to notice a couple
of other wireless LANs popping up, but so far these don't appear to
have increased the number of drop-outs on channel 13.

Hope that helps!

I have always had mine on wireless, which worked fine until I added the
two new SBs. I don't think the wireless per se is to blame - perhaps an
artefact of multiple SBs of course.

[slim] Squeezebox keeps dropping out

2006-05-18 Thread meryvn

My squeezebox 1 keeps dropping the network and going back to the setup
screen and automatically going through the find network steps. It does
this about every 30mins or so (not a regular timed occurence though)
even though my wireless network strength stays at a constant 90-95%.

I am running with Slimserver v6.2.1 as v6.2.2 does not detect any music
on my system. Though this problem has been apparent for about the last 6
months but getting steadily worse.

Having seen an SB3 in "real life" for first time last night (round a

those years ago ;) I'm totally going to get an SB3 now :)

I was basing my opinion on the pics I've seen of SB3 on websites and
stuff. Gotta say, though, that the pics don't do them justice - they
really are a whole lot smother than I had envisaged!

Slim Devices - get some more pics of the SB3 up for marketting

for buying one!

2006-05-18 Thread Bart

azinck3 Wrote:

Well, the black tape/disable the codes suggestions will not work
reliably because the squeezeboxes are a long way apart and the bounced
IR signals do not always register on the furthest unit. Also, they are
at opposite ends of the room so if I blanked one sensor then you would
have to point the remote over your shoulder as you looked at the other
squeezebox.
It seems like something that could be done in the code - once one
squeezebox has indicated that it has started to receive something then
the others could be locked out for a few seconds? Should I file an
enhancement request?
