[slim] SB1 audio problem
I have a wired SB1 in the FR that I purchased in Dec 2004, so about 1.5 yrs old. The SB1 is having some problems. 1) It randomly stops playing, drops out or pauses if you will. Then 20-30 seconds later will kick back on. 2) At times, the audio is sounding very 'ceramic' (best word for it) or tinny and distorts randomly, using both analog and digital outputs. Keep in mind this is a wired SB1 that is connected directly to my network. Songs (320 cbr Lame MP3s) are stored on a W2003 server, Celeron 2.4 with 1.25 RAM running Raid5. I also have a wired SB2 in the HT that has no problems Today I swithced them and put the SB1 in the HT, SB2 in the FR. SB2 plays fine in the FR, SB1 gives me the same random audio pauses. This tells me that it's the SB1. Considering the swap, I have effectively changed the network path, all wiring and the Pre/pro, etc. What gives here. I have been using this SB1 quite successfully for about 1.5 years and now it's flaking out with no other changes to my system/server. The only thing changing is my MP3 collection is growing, now nearing 15K songs. This symptom has me ready to toss the SB1 as it's not worth listening to with the constant random pauses and distorted output. I realize the SB1 has less memory and a lesser DAC, but it's worked fine for over a year and just now has recently shows these problems. An ideas what may be cuasing these problems, or if these is a fix. I have rebooted and also just recently installed 6.3 on the server. -- rmassey rmassey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1495 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25724 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

As far as wireless problems are concerned I found the simplest solution was simply to do away with wireless for audio streaming altogether - there are too many variables outside of one's control such as neighbours, microwaves, cordless phones etc. My solution was to run CAT5 wire inside existing electrical conduit into the ceiling and reticulating to all rooms where I have an SB3. You're right, I'm not sure what the Samba server is for. You could store a file in memory in the unit and serve it to your network that way, but you only have 16 MB and that has to house the OS as well. It could very possibly run SS. [slim] Re: Variability in wireless signal strength; dropouts
This is either 2 or 3 different problems, with different sources. The third one, the compilation albums not working, is a problem with 6.3. Watch the forums for progress on fixing it. The reason it wasn't caught before release, as I understand it, is that it only fails when compilation albums aren't explicitely marked as such, and so Slimserver has to guess that they're compilation albums. The guessing logic changed, it only fails for some taggers, etc. Next: Is the first squeezebox wired or wireless? If wireless, it could be the same problem as 2. problem 2: wireless signal strengh varying ... This is a whole can of worms. There are entire threads, spanning pages, on this forum about wireless issues. It's very complicated. It depends on your wireless access point, the size of your house, who your neighbours are, whether they like popcorn (I'm not kidding). A good place to start is to check if the access point is running the most current firmware, to ensure that all your antennas are snugged, to get a copy of netstumbler and see if anyone is operating on the same channel as you (if so, change channels), that's the short version. The long version, as I say, runs to many pages. Use the search forum function and search for wireless. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Variability in wireless signal strength; dropouts
Since I have installed Slimserver 6.3.0 and a second Squeezebox V3, I have been experiencing: 1. Erratic performance on the first Squeezebox: dropouts, and sluggish/frozen responses on the VU meter. This is an intermittent problem. 2. Enormous variability in the wireless signal strength. Sometimes it will be well over 95%, and then a few hours later it will drop to 15-20%. 3. Occasional problems in the way albums are listed on the Squeezebox. For example, tracks 1-5 of a particular album will be listed as one album, and tracks 6-11 will be listed as a separate album with the same title. I have tried a lot of different approaches to deal with these issues. Problem # 1 seems to resolve after I unplug the Airport Extreme Base Station for a while, and Problem # 3 seems to resolve when I rescan the library. I am using Mac OSX 10.4.7, and have "instructed" Slimserver to use iTunes (leaving the Music Folder and Playlists Folders blank). Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Just for information if you are interested. The latest version of SQLPlayList/DynamicPlayList plugins makes it possible to create dynamic playlists that requests parameters from the user. A playlist like this is defined i SQLPlayList for slimserver 6.5 as follows: Code: -- PlaylistParameter1:custom:Select album:select albums.id,albums.title from tracks join albums on tracks.album=albums.id where tracks.audio=1 group by albums.id order by rand() limit 10 select tracks.url from tracks where tracks.album='PlaylistParameter1' order by tracks.tracknum; If you are running slimserver 6.3 or earlier which uses SQLite you will have to change "rand()" to "random()" to make it work. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-sqlplaylist) , 'DynamicPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-dynamicplaylist) and 'RandomPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-randomplaylist) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25712 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Random album browsing?
I just put in an enhancement request to let users choose what page comes up first when browsing albums. Either (1) page 1 (2) a random page, or (3) the last page viewed. I guess I just get tired of seeing the same 10,000 Maniacs album coming up every time I "browse" albums. This is really more pertinent to the 6.5 beta, with gallery views and the ability to sort in Browse Albums. Now, having albums sorted into a known order (for me it's artist/year/album) is the only way to _find_ an album you want, but it's not ideal for figuring out what you want to listen to. How cool would it be to have a browse mode where a page of randomly selected albums is displayed? It wouldn't necessarily even have to be paged like all the other browse modes - all it would really need to do is present a single page of randomly selected albums to look at. Have a "Refresh" button on the page that would present you with a new random set. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25712 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I powered up the Squeezebox last night and it sent nothing but static - like you are between radio stations on a tuner - to the stereo. Of course, my last listening level was pretty high on the stereo so I almost p#*&ed my pants at the noise. No matter what input I chose to plug in the SB, all I got was static. I also tried connecting to the Sqeezenetwork with the same result. The SB was connected fine to the Slim Server on my PC. I fixed it by unplugging the SB to reset it. Anyone have a clue what was going on? -- breakfastchef breakfastchef's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5587 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25666 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Frusterating Browse Artists problem
Running SB3, recently upgraded to: SlimServer Version: 6.3.0 - 8148 - Windows 2000 - EN - cp1252 My problem is this. When I browse by artist from the remote, it starts at the beginning of the artist list alphabetically. Fine, not a problem. Say I scroll down the list to, say, "Boston", or "Journey" and then play and/or add an album. When I go back to browse artists, it starts back at the top of the list, as opposed to returning to where I was just browsing. This did not behave this way until recently. It only occurs with Browse Artist...if I browse albums, the behavior is normal (ie, it returns to where I was last browsing from). Is this a "feature" that I can configure, or is it a bug? I've read a handful of posts here, and am seriously contimplating going back to the previous version of SlimServer, but I'm not really sure if the issue is with slimserver or with the recent firmware upgrade. [slim] Re: rhapsody - problem : can't connect to server message
I set my firewall on my server to pass all traffic with the SB3. That will work until a reboot assigns a different IP address. The menu navigation in the SB3 seems to take a lot of steps. Someday someone at SlimDevices should step back and rethink it. Ask if your grandfather can figure it out. For me, the bottom line is clear - it is really great to have access to Rhapsody! -- gmarks gmarks's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6257 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25171 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Poll: What is your library size and hardware
623 albums with 8705 songs by 1269 artists. Hardware: AMD AthlonXP 2800+, 512MB RAM, 120GB ATA-133 and 300GB SATA HDs, gigabit LAN, NetBSD 2.0.2. Dedicated media server, runs SlimServer, daapd (for iTunes), Samba (for Windows and Audiotron) and Apache with custom PHP scripts for video and music playback on Pinnacle ShowCenter. I don't do any ripping on this box (got another NetBSD box set up as a workstation for this, same CPU but 1.5GB RAM). Use cdparanoia for extraction and lame (with options -V0 -q1 -b32 -mj) for encoding. In a back to back test between WAV (or FLAC) and MP3, both played through WinAmp with Creative MP3Blaster USB sound card feeding into Arcam Black Box 50, Yamaha DSP-A592 amplifier and Eltax Symphony 6 speakers, I could just about make out a difference between MP3 and lossless... but only just. Listened to in isolation it sounds just fine running through an offboard DAC. Interestingly feeding the digital output from the Squeezebox into the Black Box 50 sounded better than using the SPDIF output on the USB sound card. Tried with co-ax and optical connections, and both times it sounded better. Less jitter on the Squeezebox's SPDIF out perhaps? -- Squirrel Squirrel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5785 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23701 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

ok, I've looked around the forums and the problem is fixed in 6.3.1 except for people like you and I who are using MusicMagic Mixer. Perhaps someone can let us know when 6.3.2 is coming! [slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)
No it's not and I must admit that having to use the nightlys to get bug free performance when the nightlys are clearly alphas and Slimdevices warn against using them is somewhat unsatisfactory for a consumer device. I think the people who have expressed frustration in the thread have been poorly treated. They have every right to be frustrated as this is a glaringly obvious regression in the software and should have been picked up in testing. I love my squeezebox but am less than impressed with the slimserver software reliability. I used to be a professional developer and this reminds me of some of the less rigorous QA regimes that I have seen. Do we know what is being done to fix this? Background: I had the slim server software running on a Linux machine that decided to die on me yesterday so I switched back to a XP computer I was previously using to run the server. None of my Squeezeboxes can see the server now. I have the same problem, I was on 6.5 nightly before and now have the mess shown here http://www.fairyliquidizer.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/albums.png after going to 6.3.1 Does anyone know how to fix this? I didn't get the various artist albums duplicated before? I am personally happy with grouping under Various Artists but don't like the multiple entries that are now happening. I think you may be interested in changing this setting: http://www.fairyliquidizer.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/select.png I don't know if it's relevant but I also use MMM (1.5 though). [slim] Various artists - multiple entires for same disc
recently upgraded to the 6.3.0 release, but I noticed this even in earlier releases (I think I first started seeing it in one of the 6.3 nightlies). What's the deal with "various artists" category? I see a listing for various artists when I browse albums or artists - it's kind of annoying, and I want to turn it off. Is there a setting to disable it? Aside form the fact that I'd prefer not to have it, it seems to list multiple entires for the same disc. I'd expect it to list more than 1 entry for same album if same album spanned more than 1 disc... But even on single-disc albums (with all tracks released in same year) I see several entries. It looks like the disc is divided into sections: I'm getting a separate disc entry for artists beginning with "D", another one for artists beginning with "O", and yet another one for artists beginning with "R" and "S" (combined). So for this particular album I have 3 different entries for teh same album. Firstly - can I turn it off? Secondly - if I can't turn it off, can I at least change a setting so that I only have 1 entry per disc (or better still one entry per album, including where album has multiple discs)? Yeah the SB gave up over night and the wireless problem/interference has returned this morning. The CAT 5 has fixed the problem as is expected. Slim Devices is sending me a new unit just to eliminate that as a factor. I'll post and let the board know what I discover, if anything, with the new unit. -- LHawes LHawes's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6244 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25698 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

LHawes wrote: As the thread title suggests I make up 50 ft. of CAT 5 cable so I can snake it through the house and get my beloved Squeeze Box back on track with a hard wired ethernet connection. The wireless connection has been dead for 4 or 5 days and I have been fratically trying every thing to get it back on line. So I go to the router and pick a free port, run the CAT 5 cable into the lving room, look up and there it is - the SB is running strong - wirelessly of course. So I turn it on and it runs and plays every thing perfectly - WIRELESSLY. With the CAT 5 cable sitting on the floor. Well, you sent that on Friday night. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of 2.4GHz interference source in your neighbourhood that runs monday-friday, but is idle on the weekends. If so, you'll find that your wireless problems return monday morning at 9am, and you'll be thankful that you left the CAT 5 handy. - Marc ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update
Hi, I used to have the local weather forecast as my "standby" screensaver, but it may have been pre-qnap. I have registered with Weather.com and put the rss for my local area into rss feeds - but there doesn't seem to be a way of just selecting this one feed. Selecting RSS news ticker as the screensaver loops through all the rss feeds listed in home / server settings / plugins. Could someone document the correct way to get the weather feed onto the Standby screen - so that the time and weather are shown, and stay there. Additionally I have put in a plugin request to Paul at Prog AV for WeatherTime screensaver which fetches the data from weather.com and shows graphical icons on your squeezebox display: http://inside.glnetworks.de/2006/03/11/weathertime-screensaver-plugin-for-slimserver As a side comment, it takes me and I am sure many others a while to try to find answers to questions relating to Slimserver running on the TS-101. I can't help thinking that all the information that is splattered in this SlimDevices forum thread could be better indexed. I have the ability and resources to put something like a dedicated qnap - slimserver wiki into place if enough people think it would be useful.
