[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread tommypeters

When SlimServer is idle, it uses 0% and once every 10 seconds or so 2%,
on an otherwise idle machine. When scanning, and nothing else is
happening on the machine, why shouldn't slim.exe use close to 100% of
the CPU cycles? Why waste them on the System Idle Process? This is of
course regardless of CPU speed, it's not so that the Slimserver runs at
1.5GHz and if you have a faster CPU you get a lot of unused clock
cycles...

If I do something else during scanning, slim.exe gets - and uses - a
lower percentage of the CPU cycles. IF I want it to get less, I can
lower the priority of the process in Task Manager. The process is also
most of the time (while scanning) "pumping", changing in intervals of
maybe 10-20 seconds between two levels of CPU usage.

Is your laptop also wireless?

If so, you will almost certainly have problems. The data has to go a
total of three times across your wireless network:

1) from the NAS to your laptop, via the access point
2) from your laptop to the access point
3) from the access point to the Squeezebox

For Flac files that is pretty intensive

Well, that's definitely not normal.

I don't run XP on my "normal" machine, but I have run Slimserver on an
XP pro laptop, and it was fine. So let's put XP aside for a second.

What jumps out at me after that is running multiple Slimservers. Might
I ask why? I have done it, just not very often. It didn't effect me in
any adverse way, but ...

You say you can peg the CPU even when Slim is idle. So if slim is idle,
who's pegging the CPU?

Can you run task manager and tell us who's getting the CPU?

How much free physical memory do you have? Easiest way to get a quick
read on that is go to the task manager, select the performance tab,
read off the 3 numbers for physical memory.

So far it's running about 80% CPU (on a machine half the speed of

I have 100MB of free physical RAM while the scan is running.

OK. It just finished. 15 minutes for 8752 songs by 2264 artists.

During that time, I checked my email, browsed web sites, etc.

That's how it's supposed to work.

2006-08-16 Thread windowshade

Thanks for the reply. My first post was pretty vague and needs
clarification. (The answer is not in the wiki, or in the forums as far
as I can search.)

I already use foobar2000 for tagging. Wherever I can, I use multiple
tags: this works in FLAC and in GENRE in MP3s. However, multiple ARTIST
tags in MP3S (ID3v2.4) aren't read, so I use the 'MULTIPLE ITEMS IN
TAGS' feature, aka splitList. I use a semicolon to split multiple
artists in ID3 tags. Recently, though, foobar switched from '\' to ';'
for splitting multiple tags, which means I need a different splitList
parameter...

So: can I use '/' in the splitList? If so, how?

2006-08-16 Thread Michaelwagner

In the ones I've seen, the windows program is only used to set up
encryption.

Unless you're worried about your next door neighbour tapping into your
network, encryption isn't worth the trouble.

The signals don't flow through the air, only through the powerline, and
only as far as the next transformer, which is probably a half block
away.

Unlike wireless, where any guy cruising by in a car with a laptop can
hear you, only a very small number of neighbours can evesdrop on your
powerline.

And you know where they live.

>From the wiki:

Multiple Tags for genre / artist
There are 2 ways to add multiple genre tags to a file (for instance
Rock and Hard Rock).

The first is to use a tool like foobar2000 to add multiple tags. By
specifying genre = "rock\hard rock", foobar2000 will add multiple genre
tags to the file (you must use backslashes, no spaces between labels).
The current version of foobar2000 (v0.9.1) only seems to support
multiple tags when editing two or more files at a time. This approach
works for any tag (Genre, Artist, etc) but is probably only recommended
for Genre and Artist.

The second is to set both genres on the same tag (genre=rock;hard
rock). Then configure slimserver under server-settings / Behaviour /
Multiple Items in Tags with a semicolon.

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread Michaelwagner

Sigh ...

Almost everything you told us, in flamebait and now more calmly, is
already known.

You could have found this out yourself with a little light reading.

Slimserver is written in perl. Whether you are a perl fan or not,
that's the language it's written in. Warts and all.

perl did not acquire threads until recently, and not all
implementations for all machines work equally well, so the developers
have stayed away from multi-threading until very recently. The entire
slimserver has it's own internal dispatcher so that it can service
music requests and display requests and handle remote control button
presses while scanning and dishing out web pages at the web interface.

[edit] the two threads you see in windows - one is a perl windows
implementation thread that does almost nothing - I think it waits for
sigint or something. It is not a perl second thread. Slimserver is at
the moment single threaded. In 6.5 they're getting their toe in the
water with a second thread. We'll see how that goes.

It is true that (some) file systems have a way of notifying you about
file updates, but the notification method is not uniform across file
systems. Moreover, Slimserver has to work (and does, to a remarkable
extent, it does succeed) across multiple systems and across networks.
So the file store may be on a linux box, but slimserver may be running
on windows. Or vice versa. The problem is complex in it's generality
and not, as I understand it, handled at all well by perl. So the
application would have to get down and dirty in system details, not a
pleasant task.

There is code in slimserver, going back to the early days of release 6,
to catch and detect most common scanning loops. These loops are more
subtle than you might think, because some music file formats spread
themselves across multiple files. For instance, one file format records
the entire album as a monolith and then generates a second file called a
cue sheet. The idea is to prevent gaps between tracks if you don't want
them. But the 2 file format wasn't as well thought out as it might have
been (by the designers of the format, not Slim) and it is possible to
have various out-of-sync problems.

But, basically, what you described as happening shouldn't.

Which is why we asked to see your logs, to try to get to the bottom of
what's happened, to improve the product so it won't happen again.

You wrote:
> any program running on a desktop computer (in the background) that

No it doesn't.

If it's consuming 99% of the cpu, for long enough for you to casually
notice, it's not running properly at all.

I run slimserver 24/7 and have done so for about a year now. It runs on
my main computer that also runs AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop (when you
look up pig in the dictionary, that's what you find). Slim may use the
CPU for 10 seconds at a time, in response to a query, but that's it.

And when scanning, once in a blue moon, it is rather more busy for 15
minutes to half an hour or so, but even then you have plenty of

So *if* that's not your experience, and *if* you actually want to get

Actually, I'd really like to use multiple tags a la vorbis, but that's

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread inv

Well, I had to check in on you guys.. ;)

Could somebody please tell me where I asked for help? My intention was
to let whoever made the scan process know that it has the possibilty of
freezing at 99% for hours and hours.

I might have gone out on a ledge when i said that my system was the
perfect setup. This might not be the case, but the key issue here is
(as Patrick dixon said) that the slimserver scan process should be able
to gracefully recover from these errors (like itunes and mediaplayer
library). A playlist that loops, so what? As i said before, I'm sure
there is a pattern for solving similar problems. KDF mentioned that all
the error information is located in the logs. Well, if this is true, the
developer certainly knew about the error, and why didnt he just fix it?

Here are some other reasons why I thing the scan process might need
some work:

First of all, any program running on a desktop computer (in the
background) that consumes 99% cpu (slimserver does this when working
properly too) for more than 10 minutes will have a severe risk of
beeing killed by the user which is never a good thing. Chances are that
slimserver will be put into an
inconsistent state. There are ways to tag a proc with a priority,
giving other, more important procs the chance to breathe.

Second, simply by looking at the thread count of the slim.exe process
(2 threads) I'm guessing that the developer has choose a brude force
approach to indexing the data. Slim probably uses on thread to listen
for request on port 9000, and the second to perform fetch/index op. The
brude force theory is further confirmed by the fact that the whole
process seems unneccecarily slow. i/o ops (database and fileread) vs
preprocessing of the data could surely be done in parallell. (Of
course, i might be wrong, in that a threadpool might be in use)

Last, but not least. Most operating systems today, and indeed indexers
(google desktop, ms desktopsearch, spotlight, etc) , utilize
Filesystemwatchers for realtime indexing. It is cheap and easy to
implement (a couple of codelines in .net). This would certianly solve
ModelCitizen's complains about indextime
for adding only one new playlist item.

And to mrSinatra, your response to the phrase "How much did you pay for
the server software?", Originally Posted by pfarrell illustrated the

It's hard to make intelligent comments on this performance without more
information.

How many tracks? What format are they in? What version of the server
are you running?

For comparison, I have about 8500 tracks, all MP3, 1.8GHz processor,
512MB Ram. My library is about 80GB. Last time I did a full scan it
took about 15 minutes I think.

So if I can still do arithmetic this late at night, that's about 550
tracks per minute. Put another way, that's 2ms/track. Seems pretty fast
to me.

As I recall, and it has been a while since I did a full scan, it
doesn't anywhere near peg the CPU. It's pretty I/O bound.

I'm running 6.2.2.

Your mileage may vary.

[slim] Re: Powerline ethernet: Macintosh? Which brand of adapter?

2006-08-16 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I'm using the Netgear XE102 adapters. It says Windows only but you
don't actually need any OS to use them. Just plug them in and they
work.

There is a small Windows program that lets you view the powerline
network and encrypt the signal (it's only 64-bit encryption, though.

I guess you could borrow a Windows laptop and just to do a 1-time
encryption of the network.

I'm only familiar with the Netgear units.

[slim] Powerline ethernet: Macintosh? Which brand of adapter?

2006-08-16 Thread Omri

I have been using two SB3s for some time, and have finally decided that
wireless is just too frustrating--I can't stand the dropouts and
stuttering about 40% of the time. It would be difficult and expensive
to install a regular ethernet connection in my house, and, given that
people on this forum seem generally satisfied with powerline ethernet,
I have begun to explore powerline ethernet adapters, specifically those
offered by Belkin, Netgear and Linksys.

One problems is that they all seem to require using an installation CD,
but they only mention various Windows operating systems--no mention of
the Macintosh. I have tried calling and sending e-mails to the
manufacturers, but they don't bother to respond. So one question is
whether these adapters will work on a Mac system.

The other issue is which brand of adapter to purchase? There seems to
be a lot of dissatisfaction with Belkin on this forum, which leaves
Netgear and Linksys. Any thoughts on those? Plus, I notice that Radio
Shack sells powerline ethernet adapters. Are those any good?

Thank you very much for the advice.

[slim] Re: Universal Remote with MusicIP

2006-08-16 Thread opchiasm

When I originally set up the SB2 as a device on the MX800, I started
from scratch and learned all the commands directly from the SB2 remote.
When I learned the "Play" command, I pressed the "Play" button on the
SB2 remote briefly, got a "GOOD" message from the 800, and everything
worked fine.

When I started using MusicIP with the SB2, I couldn't get a mix
created. Holding the "Play" button on the 800 did nothing but send a
"Play" command. I had to use the SB2 remote to create a mix. My MX800
instantly became an almost-universal remote.

I created a new button on the 800, called it "Mix" and learned the
"Play" button from the SB2 remote, but this time I held the SB2 "Play"
button for a while. When I tried it and briefly held my new "Mix"
button, it acted like a "Play" button. I thought it was hopeless. I got
the bright idea to hold the new "Mix" button for a while and it worked!

So ... in order to get "Play" on the MX800 to act as a "Play" when
pressed quickly and as "Mix" when held down, I had to learn the command
while holding the "Play" button on the SB2 remote for a little while.

Further proof that it is better to be lucky than good.

[slim] Re: Do's and Don'ts Running SB Direct to Amp?

2006-08-16 Thread LHawes

Just gave it a try and I think there is a reason I am not posting in the
audiophile forum. I THINK I could discern a difference in the sound.
Seemed more focused and the base seemed to be a bit punchier even
without the subbie run from the receiver.

I have a pair of Axiom M22's which are light on bass to say the least
but they seemed to reproduce base better than the signal going through
the HK 3280. Pretty hard to truly A/B and there was no problem with the
levels going into the AT 1502. 40 was about max listening level and 22 -
25 comfortable.

Not a very technical or objective review and am not convinced I want
live with the single source (SB3) going to the amp (only eliminates the
TV for now as I dobn't run an HT) but for now I'll listen as is for a
while.

Thanks for the help.

Wow! Sounds like you must have a terrific relationship with your
"spouse" or "significant other"  ;)

For whatever it's worth, I have experienced scan issues with numerous
versions of SS. Some worse than others. Presently, it indeed takes a
long time to scan, but I typically do it in the evening when my
"spouse" and I are cuddled up watching a movie. The thing that I don't
like is that when scanning it can completely peg the CPU. My box is a
3.06GHZ proc, 1GB Ram and 2 250GB HDs. So, it amazes me that it does
that.

2006-08-16 Thread lrossouw

Wooohooo! Thanks for your help. Got it to work.
"My" first perl!

For those who are interested:

Created slimplay.bat with
***
@echo off
perl "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Perl\play.pl" %1
***
Created play.pl with contents:
***
use Net::Telnet ();
use URI::Escape;

my $f;
my $result;

$f = $ARGV[0];

$t = new Net::Telnet (Timeout => 10);
$t->open(Host => "localhost", Port => 9090);
$t->print("00:04:20:06:3b:85 playlist play ". uri_escape($f) );
$result = $t->getline;
$t->print("exit");
print $result;
***

placed the slimplay.bat in a my windows directory to be on the PATH.

now a command line is
slimplay "My Folder"
My Folder is a subfolder of the music library. This plays all songs in
the folder.

slimplay "c:\my library\my folder\" works too
or slimplay "c:\my library\my folder\my song.mp3" (playing a specific
file)

So my podcast program automatically sends a new podcast to my
squeezebox.

Regards
Louis

2006-08-16 Thread MrC

Since you really need to escape a number of characters, use the URI
escape module

http://search.cpan.org/~gaas/URI-1.35/URI/Escape.pm

The modified example would be:

use Net::Telnet;
use URI::Escape;

my @cmd;
my $result;

$cmd = $ARGV[0];

foreach (@ARGV) {
push (@cmd, uri_escape($_));
}

$t = new Net::Telnet (Timeout => 10);
$t->open(Host => "localhost", Port => 9090);
$t->print("@cmd");
$result = $t->getline;
$t->print("exit");
print $result;

Your command line will then not require quotes, except to escape chars
from cmd.exe.

perl testit.pl Arg1 Arg2 ...

One thing to note though, if the tagging software doesn't change the
time stamp on the files, slimserver won't realise that the file has
changed. If thats the case you need to get it to forget everything and
completely re-scan.

I use Tag&Rename and it has an option to change the modified time stamp

it effecting the Browse New Music option which i use all the time).

Short answer, 'yes'.

Not much longer answer... you have to tell the server to rescan and you
can choose to use the 'look for new and changed music' or the 'clean and
rescan' options. In the former 'changed' is what you've done to the
files, so it'll take account of that and update the details
appropriately.

Use the 'clean and rescan' when you want to say 'forget all the music I
have and update from scratch', and 'look for new and changed' when you
want to say 'I've just changed a few things - notice them, please'.

squeezebox.

Are you sending MP3 to Roku ?
If Roku does not get data within 6 secs it breaks connections and stops
playing anything sent by Slimserver.

Try using d_source and look at log when making this happen.

[slim] Will Slimserver work with re-tagging?

2006-08-16 Thread dnighorn

In a nutshell, if I re-tag my music files, will Slimserver be able to
re-scan and show the new tags?

I ripped all of my music with iTunes into Apple Lossless. At the time,
I was pretty new to this and didn't realize the importance of paying
attention to the tags. Now I do.

What I would like to do is go back into iTunes and update my tags now
that I know what I am doing. Once this is finished, can I re-scan my
library with Slimserver and have the new tags show up?

Thanks for the help!

David

We will have a bunch of internal pics in a week or two - I have been

Actually, a fair number of the folks who post here *are*
responsible for the code in one small place or another. Some
(kdf) are responsible for large parts.

Even people like myself, who haven't donated an ounce of code
but are inclined to help those in need, feel as though they are
part of the team.

The first insult was thrown by him by any reasonable definition.

Go back to your original response to this thread. You said that
folks were too hard on newbies. They, I, we are not. You can
see a dozen helpful efforts a day.

RUDE newbies are a different matter.

in reality, only one artist, and in checking the tag with winamp, i see
no differences in name, spelling, case, or anything.

do i need to check the tag some other way?

very strange.

is this problem fixed in 6.5?

A couple of things to check:

- Is there a chance you have inadvertantly used an artist separator in
the artist name? This is the character or characters set under Server
Settings -> Behavior -> Multiple Items In Tags.

- Is there a chance you have multiple artist tags on one or more of
the files? I'm not sure the best way to check this, but I *think* if
you use MP3Tag to check the file's tags then multiple artist tags show
up as
artist1//artist2

-Maybe there are other tags complicating things? I'm not sure how SS
responds to Contributing Artist, for example. MP3Tag will show you
all tags on a file if you select it then press Alt-T.
- The obvious clear and full-rescan

I don't see this behavior on 6.5, but I never checked on 6.3 so it's
possible it just doesn't occur in my library.

If you own a car, and you have problems with it, you either ask, or

a problem with my carb, could someone help me? - don't be surprised if
you not only don't get any help, but get criticised for your

If you want to rant, do it at your spouse or significant other.
If you want to get help, ask here, and be prepared to dig a bit.

It's in pretty good shape. Obviously, since it's pre-release software,

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread Michaelwagner

I thought the first post *was* offensive.

In any case, let's skip the netiquette and get to the heart of it.

Where your logs are depends on what system you're running.

For a windows system, KDF posted the answer some number of replies
back.

> server settings->debugging
>
> start with d_import, d_scan, d_parse.
>
> d_info is another one to look at if you want to watch the entire
> content to tags.
>
> the log is available from a link in the description text, or you can
> run the server from command-line with --logfile= as an argument.
>

That might have been a bit cryptic.
On the left pane of the web interface,
select server settings
select debugging
turn those options on that KDF described and hit the change button.

Then, it's a bit hard to see in the default skin, but at the end of the
top paragraph, it says "You can view the most recent log entries here".
The word *here* is a hotlink. Click it and the log will open.

If you cut and paste from there into this thread or email the results
to support, either way, it gives the people with the skills to solve
the problem some handle on what's going wrong.

Slimserver is such a rich and complex product, a million things could
be happening, and playing 20 (more like 20,000) questions isn't very
productive.

[slim] Does SlimServer/Squeezebox support HD CD's?

2006-08-16 Thread Mikael

Hi,

If I rip a HD CD to my SlimServer and use the Digital output from the
Squeezebox then I can see that HD decoder in my DAC is activated.
So what if I use the analog output on the Squeezebox instead?
Would the signal be treated as a normal CD or as the better HD CD?

Thanks
Mikael

[slim] Re: WTB: Used SB2 or SB3

2006-08-16 Thread funkstar

SB2s tend to hold their price well because people want them specifically
for their shape/size. SB3s are a little cheaper, but not massively. As
richidoo said, there will probably be more SB3s out there on the likes
of eBay etc. once the Transporter startes to ship. Although there has
already been one post on here from an existing user that is eBaying the
free one he got with his Transporter pre-order, so there might be more
out there sooner.

Have they ever disappeared? I think I've always had them... (and no,

I've seen less of them, but they're still here yes...

I think it need fixing ASAP, people can miss lots of info from interesting
threads
if posts ends up in different threads that might not be read...

[slim] Re: Do's and Don'ts Running SB Direct to Amp?

2006-08-16 Thread Matt B

If you're using the Slimserver pre amp volume control be careful when
switching to SqueezeNetwork. SqueezeNetwork will not be aware of your
pre amp volume control, which can give you (and your speakers) a bit of
a shock !

[slim] Forum replies are still not generating unique message-ID header items for the mailing lists

2006-08-16 Thread Phil Meyer
Oh no, I've got mailing list replies that are connected to the wrong threads
again.

I can see that the "message-ID" header item has been made bigger than it used
to be, but sadly it's still not unique. As a result, a reply can end up
threaded to some other message, and therefore I miss messages, or read messages
that I've already marked as ignore. It's making the mailing list unusable.

Bug 2712 was raised over 8 months ago - it desperately needs fixing.

2006-08-16 Thread MrSinatra

dumb question[s]:

where do you find the logs? are they always being made? do you have
to enable debug stuff? are there multiple logs? do they autodelete
after a time?

and i prefer sloppy kisses.

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread kdf
I'll just interrupt this little share-fest for one more attempt at
asking for logs. As this thread, like so many others, is
long-digressed from its original purpose, please consider mailing logs
(using my previously posted debug options) to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
for 6.3. They can then file a bug if necessary or help you find any
problems. If you try out 6.5, post the related logs to the Beta forum
if you wish to have some help sorting out any problems that may still
exist in the 6.5 scan, or to help narrow down anything that might need
to be cleaned up in the source data.

thanks and don't forget the group hugs when you are done.
