[slim] Re: Annoying menu navigation ( now playing)

2006-08-24 Thread topa

Hi Michael,
thank you for taking the time to help me with this.

I'll try and recapitulate (from memory) what I've done:

1)
Initial problem with factory setting was that I kept coming back to
now playing when scrolling left although I hadn't started out there,
as described more in depth in post one.

2)
As you proposed, I set the stock now playing screensaver to jump
back on wake. This cured the intial problem 1) but introduced a new
issue, which also appears with your scrips. (Probably as both do the
same). With this setting now, the navigation by left right is just
fine, but the navigation by fwd for playing the next song on an album
is goofed up. Doing so, it does not display the next song anymore at
first, until the screen saver kicks in. Equally annoying as the first
problem, especially if you skip through a few songs with fwd and
although your somewhere towards the end of the album, it still displays
track one.

3)
I then tried out various settings within the screensaver menu ass well
as you script, and although I posted once I found the solution, I was
wrong and had to delete that again. (Did I confuse you there Michael?).
I also tried your script, same result. At 2:30am, I finally gave up and
went to bed.

4)
Now comes the interesting part, I hadn't posted here yet:
This morning, I had an idea and did a complete factory reset and went
back to standard now playing screensavers without the jump back
option, and simply deleted the menu-point now playing which can be
done on the next page of the player configuration. The result is almost
what I wanted, but has a strange life of it's own.

I can walk around the menus with left and right, play songs and all
that, and will always come back to the menu I had left prior, without
ever seeing the now playing display. Just as desired.

BUT

After having picked an album and song, which now plays, and if I then
hit fwd it will not display the next song analog to Problem 2) but
still the old one. THIS WILL HAPPEN UNTIL THE SCREENSAVER POPS IN FOR
THE FIRST TIME. Thereafter, I can navigate around with fwd as
desired, and it will show the correct song immediately. And I can also
navigate back to whatever menu I came from with the left button. But
if I pick another artist, and come into his album, and skip a song
again with fwd the exact same thing happens againit keeps
displaying the old song until the screensaver pops in for the first
time again.

Very strange.
I am pretty sure it's a bug, on the German forum people describe the
1) and 2) problems as well. I think nowbody has tried my 4)
approach to this yet... Which almost gets there. It cures both problems
only just.

Tobi.

Re: [slim] Re: Annoying menu navigation ( now playing)

2006-08-24 Thread Michael Herger

Hi Tobi

As you proposed, I set the stock now playing screensaver to jump

You can set this for three different modes: for which of them did you do
it (while playing, idle, off?)

issue, which also appears with your scrips. (Probably as both do the
same). With this setting now, the navigation by left right is just
fine, but the navigation by fwd for playing the next song on an album
is goofed up. Doing so, it does not display the next song anymore at
first, until the screen saver kicks in.

I think you're misinterpreting something: as you hit fwd the player is
woken up, you're brought back to where it kicked in. As the screensaver
started when you were on your first song (I guess), you're brought back to
a track list with the first song displayed.

Let's take another example: you started some playback. While listening to
your music you go to the settings menu. You phone rings. While answering
the call the player's screensaver kicks in. A new song you don't like
while on the phone starts playing. You hit FWD to get to the next song. As
this wakes up the player you'll be back in the settings menu until the
screensaver kicks in again.

This is expected behaviour as per design. You could argue not to wake up
the player with FWD or REW (as do the volume buttons). Feel free to add
this as an enhancement request to http://bugs.slimdevices.com

At 2:30am, I finally gave up and went to bed.

Good idea :-)

That I can imagine. Now playing should imho never been removed. I don't
know whether this case is handled in the code... I would expect the
stranges of effects.

I am pretty sure it's a bug, on the German forum people describe the
1) and 2) problems as well.

Could you please point me to those threads? Would be easier to explain in
German for me, too.

Here the Devolo 14MBps are less than half the price of the faster

around 2MBps - that should still be enough I think?

However, I also recall something about the older models had problems
because they only worked within the same phase so it depended on the
wiring in your house if the plugs would connect? Is this true still for
the 14MBps version, or was that pre-Homeplug 1.0?

Can one buy two sets of adapters and send form one and recieve from
three, or do they only work in pairs?

The four ethernet connections in my router are all used (two computers,
one printer and one NAS). Is it just to buy another switch and cascade
them, so I move the printer and add the Homeplug to the new switch?
(I've worked with computer in so many years, but not all has stuck...)

Thanks slimpy. I had disabled library statistics because I had read that
doing so would lighten the load on my slimserver, which runs on an
underpowered NAS. And yes, the tooltip-like popup doesn't make any
sense for a touchscreen device -- I'll just have to fill in that

I'm not sure about your first 2 questions, but for the latter 2:

- You're not limited to pairs. Each one is just another ethernet jack
on your LAN, just like the 4 ports on your router.

- It sounds like a switch is all you need. You don't need to physically
move the printer, you can plug it (or anything) into the switch just as
well.

Re: [slim] 6.5 looking good

2006-08-24 Thread Free Lunch

Thought I'd add another 6.5 nightly success story to the pile..

I was fixin' to whine about some 6.3.1 performance issues and instead
decided to see how much things have improved with 6.5..

So I tried a 6.5 nightly this week on my gentoo sytem. Initially I had
a heck of a time getting the YAML::Syck stuff to work. I merged new
versions of those packages but it didn't really help. It kept barfing
when parsing config files.

I finally found this thread (for the second time - first time got me
interested) and using Bin/build-perl-modules.pl made all the
difference..

So far things are running smooth with no real new issues. It kinda
looks like a number of nagging performance issues seem better (woot!).

CPU consumption while playing flacs seems much improved (not that it
was ever an issue at only about 2% in the past).

Time will tell but looking pretty good!

renamed my /etc/slimserver.conf. I didn't upgrade firmware on any of my real
players or install any plugins, but I did use Softsqueeze and do a little
stress testing.

The system load is lower and the performance is markedly better than 6.3.1.
Fishbone works great and has lots of little usability improvements; I like

Real experience is about half the 14.

Yeah, you do have to worry about phases a bit, which is a pain if you

There's a thread elsewhere in the forum (search on keyword homeplug)

traffic shouldn't interfere.

What's likely happening is that your router is choking with the torrent

with such an expensive router, but as you post it's repeatable.

[slim] Gapless over internet streaming?

2006-08-24 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

I've just successfully set up my SlimServer for access over the
internet, and I'm now happily listening to my entire collection at
work, or wherever I decide I feel like listening to it. And this forum
has been a WEALTH of information, so thank you to everyone who helped
others out -- you helped me too ;)

I'm proxied at work , so my only option is to use the stream.mp3
interface through Winamp (or other stream player) -- no SoftSqueeze.
Is there a way to tweak the stream so that it plays back gapless at
Winamp's end? I went to the trouble to rip all of my albums in OGG for
gapless support (disk space is at a premium, otherwise I would have used
FLAC), and they play back perfectly gapless at home on my Squeezebox,
but I get a little blip of silence at work through stream.mp3. Given
that Winamp just receives a continuous stream, is it possible for
Slimserver to create gapless transitions?

I am currently streaming the MP3 stream using Lame quality level 9 and
bitrate limiting to 192 kBps. Sounds pretty good on my crappy work
computer speakers.

[slim] Bathroom install

2006-08-24 Thread Robin Edwards
I'm planning to extend my music netowrk into my bathroom, and want to use a
slimserver based device. I say it that way as I have slimp3,squeezebox2 and
squeezebox3 devices. Currently I have one spare slimp3 but could move things
around to free one of the others.

UK regulations mean I cant have 240v in bathroom, only low voltage, so I'm
planning to have power sockets in roof void above bathroom. In void will also
be power supply for slim, amp and cabling for waterproof speakers. What I want
to do is have the slim hang through the ceiling in like a little plastic pod to
protect it from damp. The low voltage cable and audio cables neatly to go thru
ceiling into void. I dont want to have to get out of bath to change tracks, vol
etc so site needs to be in bathroom.

What I cant find is something waterproof, little clear plastic/PVC box to house
the device. Can anybody help, any suggestions welcome, but I've spent weeks
working on the bathroom so it needs to look good.

Many thanks in advance, robin (pictures available if I ever get it done).

 Hi -

I'm having trouble running slim server on a Win xp box. When i double

When i right click - run as current user, an error displays from a

 Any thoughts? thanks.

Oddly, I got exactly that PANIC message when I first installed
Slimserver - it came up right at the end of the installation. However,
Slimserver just worked perfectly regardless, and has continued to do
so.

[slim] Re: Bathroom install

2006-08-24 Thread cparker

Hi rde_w

I installed my slimplayer in the bathroom and put all the wiring into
the wall and in the attic space for the ceiling speakers.

I created a template here, which may help or not :)

[slim] Re: Bathroom install

2006-08-24 Thread Kyle

How damp does it get? I have a Bose wave radio, in-ceiling speakers and
a wall-mounted whole-house stereo controller in my bathroom. None are
specially made for damp applications and all have worked fine for
years. I have read posts here about people putting water-resistant and
waterproof speakers in their bathrooms, but I think in most cases that's
overkill. I would have no qualms about mounting an unprotected SB near
the ceiling of my bathroom, unless you expect water spray to hit it.
Sure, there are times when the humidity is high, but usually they are
brief.

2006-08-24 Thread blackbear

Thanks, smc!

I clearly need to look into plug-ins more before I waste my time
writing stupid little standalone scripts.

I'm happy to say that the script works as intended, though. (Although,
admittedly, error checking and -handling is non-existent.)

2006-08-24 Thread kdf

Quoting Michael Haan [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I use subversion and I'm running Knoppmyth (variant of debian)
for me, it's simply:

cd /usr/local/slimserver/trunk
svn up
su -c /etc/init.d/slimserver restart

occasionally I have to run Bin/build-perl-modules.pl in order to
update various required support modules, and I've also had to do an
apt-get install mysql to get the latest mysql (knoppmyth is stuck back
at mysql 4.x)

[slim] Re: Double tracks in playlist

2006-08-24 Thread GeezerD

My problem may have been fixed by the current build (I haven't checked
yet by testing) but here is the text for Bug 3699:

When the Composer and Artist are the same, duplicate tracks created in
playlist

Dunno why no one else has complained about this -- It happens for
almost every album for me. I suppose this might be an artifact of my
process of ripping to flac, and not editing the tags.

TagRename (which I downloaded a few hours ago) reveals that the
composer tag is empty for at least one of the problematic albums
though, so I am not sure if the bug description is the same.

[slim] Re: Radio station works on SoftSqueeze but not SqueezeBox2

2006-08-24 Thread rds

Well, I did download the latest nightly that was available at that time.
I guess you were referring to the Aug 23 nightly which hadn't been
uploaded yet.

Anyway, I grabbed the Aug 24 nightly and this seems to fix the problem.
Other radio stations also seem to start much quicker now. Of course,
6.5 seems to have some major stability problems, as the service keeps
shutting down intermittently for no apparent reason during use.
Fortunately, Windows services can be set to automatically restart after
a failure, which is how I've configured the SlimServer service.

[slim] Re: Passive speakers - using as an alarm clock

2006-08-24 Thread lanierb

Another option is a Sonic T-amp hooked up to passive speakers. It's
about the size of your hand and a couple inches thick. It runs $25 but
you need to buy a power supply cord which costs another $20 so $45
total. I leave mine on full time in my bedroom and the speakers are
dead quiet (I just put my ear up close to check). (In case you're
skeptical, many audiophiles love it.)

[slim] Re: Radio station works on SoftSqueeze but not SqueezeBox2

2006-08-24 Thread rds

After playing with it a bit more, it seems to be this URL that is
causing the server to shutdown. Also, it turns out that the SlimServer
Windows service doesn't actually stop (SlimServer justs stopped
responding and devices can no longer contact it), so the auto-recovery
options for services don't help here.

Andy, you said that it worked fine for you on this version. Try putting
the URL in a PLS playlist and launch the station from the SqueezeBox
itself. That's when the problem seems to occur. Also, it may work just
fine the first few times, but seems to eventually cause the server to
crash.

What debug options (aside from directstream) should I enable to figure
out what's going on here?

Run from the command line (in your C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server
dir):

slim.exe --d_scan --d_directstream --d_parse --logfile slim.log

Please file a bug and include this log file of the failing station.
