[slim] Re: Linux x86_64 and AAC heartache....

2006-11-14 Thread bpa

Can you provide technical info. Nobody can help unless you provide
better information.

What becomes dog slow - the audio sounds like it is being played at
half speed or slimserver web interface repsonds slowly or SB interface
becomes slow or there are large gaps between tracks or something else ?

What is jumping - you jump items in the playlist or it jumps within a
track ?

What are these playlists ?
How large are these playlists ?
After how many items does the problem show ?
What version of mplayer did you install ?
Are you still on 6.5.0 or have you upgraded to 6.5.1 ?
Did you check what processes are running when the system is running
slow to see what using most CPU, memory , disk activity ?

Mplayer will be restarted for each track so the dog slow problem
could be either - something in slimserver (e.g. scanner) or lots of
mplayer processes not being killed when finishing a track.

If there is a jump within a track and if you using wireless - I'd
advise running tests to see how good is your wireless connection.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5.1 plays no FLAC ?

2006-11-14 Thread liamg

Hi,

I've had the exact same problem with streaming flac files to a remote
client for the past couple of years and can only run slim.exe from the
command line to resolve this.

I've made no changes to convert.conf in recent versions.

Playing flac directly to the SB2 (no conversion) is fine.

Curiously, I see the same issue when attempting to stream any files
other than mp3 - i.e. anything that does conversion.

I can only assume that there is an O/S issue hidden away somewhere with
permissions/paths when running as a service rather than command line.
I've tried running as both SYSTEM and specifying a user for the service
but still see the same issue.

If this has only just started happening for you then I would suggest
that this is something that has been introduced by a change to
something other than the slimserver itself.

I've had the same issue since the year dot - not quite sure of the the
version number but would certainly by 5.x. I'm currently running with
6.5.1.

[slim] Server settings - file types order

2006-11-14 Thread egraaf

In Server settings - File types there is the file format conversion
setup. There are several entries per file format, and I would like to
know which one the Slimserver will use. For example for Flac there is
the builtin, a conversion to MP3 and a conversion to wav.

Will the Slimserver always pick a format that the Squeezebox can handle
natively first, so not convert Flac to anything else, or will it always
pick the topmost entry for a format first?

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5.1 plays no FLAC ?

2006-11-14 Thread bpa

It looks like something to do with permissions and/or user id. The
permission problem can be anywhere from the volume, directory down to
the file with user groups and ACL. It also looks like it may be to do
with how the child application FLAC is initiated and not slim.exe
itself.

What version of Windows do you use ?
What userid runs the slimserver service ?
If you are using XP Pro or Server - do you have a domain controller ?
Is the drive where you have the media files NTFS formatted ?
Is the media drive internal, external USB/Firewire or something else
(e.g. mapped drive from a NAS) ?
Do you have a FAT formatted drive (a USB memory stick may or may not
work) - if so can you copy a flac file to the FAT drive and try to play
it (you can use Tune with a file:// prefix). If it plays then it is
definitely a permissions problem.

[slim] SB does not resume playing at power up

2006-11-14 Thread Kyle

I've got my system set to resume playing at power up, and while the SB
previously did this, now it will not. I have chosen Pause at power
off - resume playing at power on in the SB options area, but when I
power up my system, the SB is on Stop and I have to manually start
it. This is not always convenient because I have a whole-house audio
system and am rarely in the den where the SB sits when I turn on the
audio. Is this a bug, do I need to reset the SB, or what?

[slim] Wish List for Slimserver - editing and adding of 'Favorites'

2006-11-14 Thread Cleve

My one wish for future versions of the Slimserver GUI is the ability to
add and edit favorites directly from the software.

Why? In my situation, the SB3 is located in a different room of the
house from the computer which runs Slimserver. So if I use direct
internet radio tune in via Slimserver, I have to go to the SB3
itself, and access the add favorites function to save the radio
station.

Then, some stations are saved as IP addresses, rather than their
station name. It would be nice also to be able to EDIT the station
names directly from the Slimserver interface. I found a 'work around'
for this - but it would be better to use the Slimserver software,
instead of tinkering with the favorites directory itself.

Other than this minor quibble - Slimserver works quite painlessly here.
I recently upgraded computers from my trusty old Gateway Athlon 650 to a
new Gateway Athlon 3500 with 1 Gb of RAM. I'm amazed at how much
quicker Slimserver responds to remote control requests from the SB3
now. No problems, no glitches, just pure listening enjoyment.

[slim] AAC / limited / Russian characters

2006-11-14 Thread gsalton

After tracking down that my wireless is (suddenly) too slow to work
without the lame solution, I've uncovered a new problem. Slim will not
play AAC files with Russian characters in the song titles (possibly
album titles, but I think it is just the song titles). MP3s are fine.
Band names that are in cyrillic also appear fine.

These songs were working fine before the lame change.

I have tried to look at the log file but may not have the right options
turned on. I can see the following, that in attempting to parse the
filename, it shows %DC type characters for the band name (indicating
perhaps it recognizes this is a foreign charcter set?), but nonsense
characters for the song name.

Any ideas?

(I should note, I also installed TrackStat at about the same time).

[slim] Re: Server settings - file types order

2006-11-14 Thread slimpy

My understanding is that slimserver will choose conversion in the
following order if multiple entries are enabled:
1) no transcoding necessary (eg flac -- flac (native) ) if the source
format is compressed
2) transcode to a natively supported compressed lossless format (eg aac
-- flac)
3) transcode to a natively supported compressed lossy format (eg wav
-- mp3)
4) transcode to a natively supported uncompressed format (eg mp3 --
wav)

Aha. I often try to mention this, and when I do I usually get 5
replies with works for me. But it's definitely pushing the
envelope.

Routers *do* allow a wireless-to-wireless connection but it's a two-hop
arrangement, server - router (1 hop), router - Squeezenox (another hop).
On each hop you can get interference, attenuation, all the lovely
things that impede wireless networking.

It can work, but you greatly increase latency and decrease bandwidth.
The combintation of the two can cause all sorts of problems, from minor
stuttering to no connection at all.

[slim] UK shipments delayed?

Hi

I ordered a black wireless SB from ripcaster on the 25th Oct and, after
a series of 'shipping later this week' emails, I've now had one saying

quick search of other UK suppliers shows no others with stock either.
Has SD stopped shipping the SB? Can anyone from SD say authoritatively

Re: [slim] Server settings - file types order

2006-11-14 Thread kdf

The player type determines the target format by preference.

SB3/3 and Transporter will request wma ogg flc aif wav mp3 in that
order.
If there is a built-in palyback, or a transcoding option that works,
you get playback.

if not, it moves on to the next or fails after the last.

This way, you can have conversions to wav mp3 and flac and the SB2 will
use the flac output, SB1 will use WAV and SliMP3 or

software clients using stream.mp3 will use the mp3 conversion.

[slim] Default Interface Issue in SlimServer 6.5

2006-11-14 Thread agbagb

I've jsut upgraded from 6.3.1 to 6.5, running under Mozilla Seamonkey.
I use Default Interface.

In 6.5 the NOW PLAYING pane under MUSIC PLAYER on the right frame of
the screen has its track info all squished up. It also runs too far to
the right in the grey box, and runs past the bottom margin of the box
too. The CURRENT PLAYLIST panes below are fine.

Didn't happen in 6.3.1. Looks ugly in 6.5: really annoying. I've
tried switching between Interfaces (I strongly prefer Default),
clearing my cache, refreshing the browser. Still happens with any
track info that runs to more than onefull line n total.

Any ideas?

[slim] Nokia 770 - comments please?

2006-11-14 Thread SadGamerGeek

I've been mulling over the idea of a Nokia 770 for some time now, but
just can't make up my mind. I know there are loads of threads about the
unit on these forums and I've read quite a few of them, but I still
can't decide.

I'd be looking to use it partly as a SS controller, and partly for a
handy way to surf the web from the sofa.

I've been trying out the Nokia 770 skin via Firefox. It seems a little
slow on my Intel Dual core machine, so I'm wondering what sort of
performance I can expect on the 770 itself (SS is just running on a
Epia Via C3 / 1Ghz / 512MB, but this gives acceptable web performance
on the default skin).

Searching the web for general reviews of the 770, I've found some very
positive ones, but an equal number that complain of poor performance.
Having said that, most of the negative reviews seem to be based on the
older software, and it seems that the 2006 update was quite an
improvement.

So, 770 owners, what do you like and dislike about your toy?

Also, has anyone compared using the the 770 with a PDA (and one of the
relevant apps) to control SS?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Richard

[slim] Confused and disheartened of the UK

2006-11-14 Thread derekc

I have had my wireless SB3 a few months now and have had many niggly
problems. I bought it just for the internet radio facility - radio
choice in the UK is at best pretty limited. To cut a long story short,
to access Internet radio I have been manually selecting stations from
within the SB3 - unfortunately this meant I could not access any of the
AlienBBC stations or anything else not listed.

A new laptop has been bought and at last thought I had the SB3 under
control - last night I was actually playing, for the first time ever,
AlienBBC, no blips, pops stutters, yes it was working - real music. I
created a new favourites list from within SB3 of purely AlienBBC
stations and amused myself from jumping from free form jazz to early
music via Norwegian fiddle music. It also sounded great.

This is it - the key had been unlocked - however, that was yesterday
:-(

Today, I thought I would impress my wife by demonstrating how she can
now, at any time, replay the latest Steve Wright show.

So I switched on the SB3 and connected to the squeezenetwork - as per
normal - shock horror, my new AlienBBC favourites had disappeared along
with the AlienBBC facility.

Switch on the laptop - fire up slimserver, nothing - make sure your SB3
is switched on - well I know it is - I am actually listening to it. The
only way I can connect to the slimserver is to go into the SB3, and
force a connection to the Laptop.

It then coughs into life - hey presto the SB3 favourites again contain
my new AlienBBC selections.

However, go back to a SB3 to squeezenetwork connection, and I am back
to an old favourites list.

Why does the AlienBBC option disappear when connected to the
squeezenetwork? Where does my old favourites list go to? Why can't I
just use the SB3 as a stand alone item? Why can't slimserver
automatically connect to the SB3? Why can't the AlienBBC stay resident
in the SB3?

And to cap it all, tonight I am back to serious stopping and starting
on AlienBBC. It works fine for a while then goes into meltdown - one
blip of sound every sec or so. I even had the laptop next to the
wireless router with the sb3 next to the laptop - nope, no joy.

SB3 on its own works fine - albeit with the limited functionality.

Why am I spending hours and hours trying to get this thing going
reading endless posts? It is all becoming too hair shirt for me.

It is a real shame as when it is working it is great. Also I can not
criticise the level of support from Slim Devices.

The whole relationship between the slimserver and SB3 is totally
confusing. They just don't seem to get on. When slimserver is
communicating with the SB3, is SB3 talking directly to the web, or is
it going via the Laptop. Who knows.

[slim] Re: Confused and disheartened of the UK

2006-11-14 Thread radish

Your SB3 can be connected to SqueezeNetwork *or* Slimserver. Not both.
AlienBBC, as it performs format conversion of the streams, requires a
local Slimserver. So if you want to use SqueezeNetwork you can't use

There is no relationship - they're entirely seperate. Squeezenetwork is

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 - comments please?

2006-11-14 Thread azinck3

SadGamerGeek;154752 Wrote:

 Richard

I just got a 770 and can say that it's not yet mature. Whether or not
it's worth buying is largely dependent upon how willing you are to part
with your cash. Ben's skin is excellent, and makes the most of the
device's slow processor, but expect an overall slow experience. It's
certainly not going to be faster than your experience on your PC. It's
workable, but be willing to be patient. The now-playing playlist seems
to be particularly slow in loading. The 1-by-1 cover display, on the
other hand, works *quite* well and speedily. Ben apparently plans an
update to make it not jump to the now-playing screen after pushing play
on a track, which will be a huge improvement for my usage patterns.

I generally like the device, and it can be handy to have at a party for
guests to scroll your music collection (it's a more familiar interface
and easier to see lots of music at one time), but at the same time they
sometimes get confused by the delays and the difficulty in tapping
accurately (it can be tough to precisely hit the letter of the alphabet
you want to go to when browsing music). If I know what I want to play,
and am within reach of the IR remote, then there's absolutely nothing
faster than the IR remote. You can positively fly through the SB's
interface.

I use the 770 to read the occasional RSS feed or email, but it's 10x
more efficient just to sit down at the computer--particularly if you're
going to be doing any text input at all.

I think the PDA control options are probably much better from a
speed/usability standpoint but perhaps aren't as pretty as the 770
skin, nor as sexy as the 770 itself. I would have bought a PDA if
slimremote or telcanto supported Rhapsody. As it is, Rhapsody (oh, and
AlienBBC too!) is pretty much the reason d'etre for my squeezeboxen, so
a PDA wasn't even an option.

As I look back over my post I notice I haven't organized my thoughts
too well...hopefully I've provided some useful info here...

confusing. They just don't seem to get on. When slimserver is
communicating with the SB3, is SB3 talking directly to the web, or is
it going via the Laptop. Who knows.

Well that confusion is part of why you are confused, so perhaps I can
help.

The Squeezebox is a slim device, (hence the company name) or in less
polite terms, a dumb terminal.

It obviously has no local disc, so you can't store music on it, but it
also has very little else: it has a very nice crisp display, some great
audio circuitry, a network interface or two if you have wireless, and a
CPU to tie all those together. The real functionality (what to
display, where music lives, even whether it is on or off) all comes
from a server. There isn't even a clock on the Squeezebox: when it
displays time, that is because the server said, hey, draw this! and
it has no idea what it is drawing.

Squeezebox2 and later can either use a local server for control, or
they can use Squeezenetwork. They can only be on one or the other at a
given time, just like a network aware printer can only print from one
machine at a time or you would have a mess.

The problem with the BBC radio programs is that they are in Real
Audio, so they can't be on Squeezenetwork. (Assuming it was legal,
your radio station would have to send all its data to California, be
re-encoded as mp3, and then retransmitted back. Lots of room for
failure and degraded audio to boot! In practice, it would almost
certainly require Slim to get a license for re-encoding the station.)

So the best way to do formats like Real Audio is to have your local
server do it: it can grab the station directly, and then transcode it
to a WAV or FLAC (lossless! so no further degradation in quality) and
then send it to your Squeezebox.

It does mean you need to keep your laptop on for BBC radio, which is
why a lot of people either piece together a cheapo box or a NAS device
and use that for a server.

Remember very little is actually -in- the Squeezebox: the playlists and
favorites are saved on a server. Remembering which server that is
(either your own or Squeezenetwork's) can be tricky. Slim hopes to
make the transition between local and squeezenetwork more transparent
in the future, but that will be a while.

[slim] Re: Confused and disheartened of the UK

2006-11-14 Thread slimpy

The squeezebox always needs a server to connect to. The server controls
almost every aspect of the device. The server tells it what to display
(even the time display in the off state is sent by the server), sends
the audio data, even button presses on the remote control are sent to
and processed by the server.
When you want to listen to your own music you need to connect the
squeezebox to your local slimserver.
You can also listen to internet radio this way. The server software
reads the data from the internet radio stream and sends it to the
squeezebox. If you listen to BBC streams slimserver delegates the
processing of the stream to AlienBBC because it cannot handle the data
format of the stream. AlienBBC converts the stream into a format
slimserver understands and can send to the squeezebox.

SqueezeNetwork is nothing more than a public slimserver in the
internet. Instead of connecting to your local server you connect to a
server provided by Slimdevices.

You can only connect to one or the other, not both.
Because none (except network settings) of your preferences are stored
in the squeezebox (it's a rather dumb device, remember?) but on the
server you won't have the same settings in SqueezeNetwork and your own
server.
You won't be able to listen to any streams that require AlienBBC when
connected to SqueezeNetwork because AlienBBC is not installed on that
server.

I hope this gives you an idea of how the squeezebox, slimserver and
SqueezeNetwork work together.

-s.

Without trying to complicate thing, just 2 comments

1) You mention placing the laptop router SB3 close together to solve
dropouts.

This kind of implies that you have a wireless card in your laptop
communicating with the same router as the SB3. This is a poor network
design that is know to cuase issues as there are 2 wireless hops
involved in getting data from the machine running Slimserver to the
SB3.

I suggest a wired link from the machine running Slimserver to your
router.

2) You talk about listening to the Steve Wright show while it's live on
the BBC.

The BBC can only support a finite number of streams before users start
to experience dropouts in the audio. The more popular the stream, the
more likely for this to occur. This is why they don't even bother to
stream the likes of Wogan and J. Ross live. The Beeb provides the
listen again links to try to spread the load on their servers. You'll
find that a PC running Realplayer would be experiencing similar dropouts
as the SB3 is when stream Steve Wright, although Realplayer might buffer
the data better.

Depends what data - if it's from your own music collection, it gets
pulled off the disc by SlimServer. The disc can be on the SlimServer
machine, on an external drive or on your network.

If it's Internet radio data, as of SlimServer 6.5, SlimServer merely
acts as a helper, the stream is actually sent directly to your
Squeezebox. You could even turn your SlimServer off at this point,
which would cause your display to go dark as SlimServer can't send
anything more to it, and you couldn't change streams as that
functionality is contained in SlimServer. But the stream should still
play.

Jittery Internet radio is often caused by web congestion - your
wireless network has way more bandwidth than the pipe used to feed
Internet radio to you, so the performance playing local files and
Internet radio will be different. However, there have been reports of
poor SqueezeNetwork performance for about a week now, so it's best to
play Internet radio through SlimServer at the moment.

2006-11-14 Thread bpa

There is no definitive way to identify the cause of you BBC start/stop
problems but it sounds like an internet issues.

When you have the problem - are you listening to Live or Listen Again
streams.

If the stream from the BBC breaks down and the buffer in AlienBBC is
depleted - the stream will revert to short burst of sound followed by
silence. This will generally only happen in live streams. If the BBC
is the problem then if you press - the stream will be restarted and
buffer refilled and live stream will start again in about 10 secs.

If the problem happens with Listen Again then it is likely to be a
something to do with wireless - if you install Lame and then disable
RTSP-WAV and RTSP-FLAC, it should minimise the problem as you will
used MP3 to SB and not Flac.

Finally, in the UK you can listen to BBC WMA streams for live stations
- this can be done with Squeezenetwork. I can't say how good or bad are
these streams.

True, but only for native format stations. The catch with the BBC is

In the case of AlienBBC, the data is pulled into slimserver, transcoded,
and then streamed to the sb3.

If your laptop is connecting to the internet via an 802.11 interface,
that means that the music data is making _3_ wireless hops --
internet-router-server, server-router, router-sb3. If so, I'm
surprised it ever worked. It is strongly recommended that the computer
running slimserver have a wired connection.

Since you can get this direct from O2 for just £150 on a

A few possibilities...

First, upgrading to 6.5.0 had a few issues as not all of the old
version was cleared out. The safe way to do this is a complete deletion
of the old slimserver directory (or rename, more safely) before
installing 6.5.

Second, I know you said you've cleared browser cache, but do it again
just to be sure.

Third, try a 6.5.1 nightly as there are several useful fixes since the
original 6.5.0

[slim] dvbshout - streaming a complete DVB-T or DVB-S multiplex!

2006-11-14 Thread florca

I have just finished putting together a new Linux (Ubuntu Edgy Server)
Slimserver / AlienBBC / DVB-T streaming solution (which should also
support DVB-S radio streaming) using icecast and a very neat and
efficient piece of software called dvbshout -
http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~njh/dvbshout/ . This has replaced my old
DAB Wavefinder / DABBar solution and has the major benefit over other
DVB-T/S solutions I’ve seen in that it will serve an entire multiplex
concurrently – eg one client can listen to BBC Radio 3, another to
Radio 4 and (using Streamripper) a Radio 2 show could be recorded.

I’m using it with a current Hauppauge Nova-T card but I guess it would
work with all DVB-T/S/C cards supported by current Linux kernels. It
takes selected channels from a tuned Multiplex and fires them at an
icecast2 server, from where they can be received by Squeezebox(es) (or
any other Shoutcast-compatible client such as foobar2000, ITunes,
Winamp or Windows Media Player). Unlike my old solution, which needed
separate boxes – Win98 for Wavefinder / DABBar and XP for Slimserver,
this brings it all together on one system, which seems much snappier
and, so far, more stable than the old combination.

Other benefits over DAB are that the station bitrates are higher
(better quality) and changing channels is snappier. I think something
similar could be done using VLC, but after lots of time with Google it
looks like VLC would be far more resource hungry. My setup all runs
quite happily on an old 733MHz PIII.

There is a submitted Debian dvbshout package available at
http://sponsors.debian.net/viewpkg.php?id=286 . It’s not 100% clean
(the Perl script to build the required config file had some minor bugs)
but once running it’s been completely stable. A DVB-S (Nova-S) solution
would deliver more radio stations in a single multiplex but for now the
DVB-T card is good to work with.

My next challenge is to setup some Streamripper jobs to record and tag
my favourite shows so that I have “full quality” versions of Late
Junction etc. to complement the AlienBBC / Listen Again complete 7-day
archive, and figure out the best way to file them in Slimserver.

If there’s any interest in more detailed instructions, or if someone
has any ideas for a better capture / archive / Slim database solution
(I’ve considered a minimal MythTV install) then let me know…

Brgds
Phil

This statement has me scratching my head, esp. since you say that the
default skin seems to perform just fine. IMHO, you should *only* see
performance improvements with Nokia770 over default on a PC. There's
tons of AJAX enhancements to make responsiveness better when using that
skin. It doesn't make sense that it should be slower than the default
skin from the same browser/PC. Anyone else see this?

I don't think there's a person on the planet that would give the Nokia
770 an unequivocal thumbs-up, but it does have a lot of whiz-bang
features.

pros:
fantastic screen resolution kicks the pants off of most if not all
handheld devices on the market
opera browser renders pages beautifully
VOIP with gizmo project works quite well
if you format the video properly, watching vids is quite nice (and what
the 770 can handle improves with each update)
newest 2006OS is pretty stable, and light years ahead of the original
2005OS
streaming audio works well
open-source model means tons and tons of free apps to run

cons:
performance can be an issue for some. i'm patient and find it to be
reasonable, but not great
delay on waking from sleep, auto shutoff of wireless and/or screen
makes using it as a slimserver remote somewhat limited
if i work at it, i can crash it
it's right-handed
i want it to be a streaming video client, but i have to load vids
locally to view them

the 770 is a first-of-its-kind device. With it comes all of the baggage
associated with such a gadget.

Yep - there sure were a few issues in upgrading to 6.5! And I
eventually did a total out (auto and manual) of 6.3.1 and a fresh in of

too.

A few more total cache clearances (using 3 methods), and I've still
got the issue. It looks to me as if the NOW PLAYING box is just set to
expect to contain a very short text title - my stuff is mostly
classical / opera, and a title runs to about three lines.

I'll try 6.5.1. Can I install that as an upgrade to 6.5, or am I back

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 - comments please?

2006-11-14 Thread SadGamerGeek

bklaas;154795 Wrote:
This statement has me scratching my head, esp. since you say that the
default skin seems to perform just fine. IMHO, you should *only* see
performance improvements with Nokia770 over default on a PC. There's
tons of AJAX enhancements to make responsiveness better when using that
skin. It doesn't make sense that it should be slower than the default
skin from the same browser/PC. Anyone else see this?

Sorry - my initial statement re. speed was a bit vague on this, and
I've just revisited the skin and compared it to the default one side by
side. Navigating albums/artists etc. is done at a very reasonable speed
- it seems pretty much the same as default to me.

Where it is significantly slower than default for me, is in initial
loading of the icons. When I start the browser first navigate to the
skin there frequently seems to be quite a delay as it loads all the
icons for the main screen, and also the transport icons (play, pause
etc.) This may well be a Firefox issue (though I don't have it set to
clear the cache on exit, nor do I manualy clear the cache).

Thanks very much to everyone for all the thoughts so far - this is all
really helpful!

[slim] UPNP/DLNA server for sqeeezebox?

2006-11-14 Thread booji

Is it possible to get squeezebox to use a general media server. I want
to se up a network with a few squeezeboxes and maybe some AV hardware.
I dont want to run mutiple media servers on the one machine. I'm dont
really want to go for the lower quality alternatives (M1000
Soundbridge). I've heard that slim server is pretty good put
proprietory software puts me off purchasing squeezboxes.

[slim] SB3 No Longer Connects to Network

2006-11-14 Thread lord . hypnos

Yesterday, songs started automatically stopping like there was a bad
wireless connection, and after putting up with it for about 10 minutes
I turned the player off. I tried to use it this evening, and after
seeing the Welcome screen, the player tried to connect to wireless but
the screen goes completely blank after a couple of seconds. I pressed
the right arrow on the remote, and it still said obtaining an IP
address. I unplugged and plugged back in the Player, and went through
the wireless settings again, but I still couldn't obtain an IP
address.

After thinking that it might be a problem with the router, I turned off
the router and player, let the router come back on, and then turned on
the player-still no luck.

I then decided to hook the SB3 directly to the router and setup the
player over ethernet. I choose the ethernet connection over wireless,
tried DHCP--no luck, tried specifying an IP manually, entered the IP of
the server, and had no luck there either.

Is my player defective or is there something else I can try?

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 - comments please?

2006-11-14 Thread cshaida

As sb remote:

I've had a 770 since last march and use ben's skin on the 770
(obviously) and on my pcs. After an initial period where I used the
770-as-sb-remote a lot, I now use the pc more than the 770 (other than
at parties, where it's still the cats meow!). I think this has more to
do with my perhaps peculiar rhythm in selecting music than with the
device per se; I tend to que up 4 or 5 'albums' (I still prefer
listening to tracks in the order they came on the original album/cd) or
a pandora radio station so there's not a lot of moment-by-moment
interaction and the always-on laptop or the actual sb remote tend to be
a bit easier since I generally already know what I want to play.

As a browser:

I use the 770 as a lying-around-on-the-couch browsing device quite a
lot. You'll see on these forums a vibrant pov re 'why not just use a
laptop' and that makes sense UNLESS you're like me and find that
somehow a laptop is just a bit too awkward and a bit too hot
(literally) to have anywhere near your actual lap for an extended
period of time. If that's the case for you AND your browsing doesn't
require a lot of typing (a pretty big stack of 'ifs' I know) then the
770 is quite remarkable as a browsing device and in a whole different
league from other pdas since most websites work as-is on the 770 and
most definitely do not on other pdas (because of the 'full' screen size
of the 770). fyi, I read a fair number of blogs everyday and the 770
is really great for that; I also read but do not reply to email on the
770.
I own a Dell Axim as well as a drawer full of blackberry, treo, q phone
devices that supposedly have internet accesss but I've never in my life
willingly accessed an internet site on them unless I was miles a way
from a pc/laptop. I will use the 770 instead of a laptop if I'm 20
feet away from the laptop.

One man's experience...

Squeezebox requires Slimserver, it will not work with UPnP or any other
server software. However, Slimserver is very far from proprietary (at
least according to the definition on Wikipedia:

don't mention what other servers you'll be running, or why? Slimserver
is good for all your music needs :)

I think they're actually suggesting truncating the text automatically

2006-11-14 Thread lord . hypnos

I left the player off for about 30 minutes, and I am now able to connect
using the ethernet connection and inputting a manual IP, subnet, dns,
server IP, etc. However, I receive the cable is disconnected message
every once and awhile, then things work again. Just like I was
experiencing with the wireless connection yesterday. DHCP over ethernet
still doesn't work.

When I setup the player to use the wireless connection, the player sees
the SSID, allows me to enter the 64-bit WEP key, and then confirms that
it has connected, but when it asks if I want to connect using DHCP or
manually, neither method works.

I am using the stable 6.5.0 release on WinXP SP2 using a Linksys
WRT54Gv5 router.

[slim] Slim Server 6.5 - formatting garbled in Firefox

2006-11-14 Thread Cleve

I guess I should have knocked on wood when I posted earlier today that
Slimserver had been working painlessly for some time for me. Now I've a
problem.

I'm running Firefox 2.0 on my computer. My previous version of
Slimserver worked fine on both Mozilla, Firefox, and Firefox 2.0.

Tonight, Slimserver prompted me that a new version, 6.5, was available.
I downloaded the .exe file, closed Slimserver, and then ran the
executable.

Well, Slim Server works, BUT all the borders, shadings, highlights, et
al in the interface vanish in Firefox. But if I use Internet Explorer
to open Slim Server, Voila - it's all returned.

I've attached screenshots of both browsers with Slimserver open. As
you can see, in Firefox I can't even tell if power is on or off!!! Is
there a fix?

[slim] Support for WPA2 Enterprise and/or 802.1x?

2006-11-14 Thread benh

Just some idle curiosity...how big a deal would it be to support 802.1x
and/or WPA2 Enterprise for SB/TP wireless auth?

Reason I ask is that my home wireless is split into several segments,
one SSID on a vlan that's secured via 802.1x for personal use and one
SSID on a public vlan (and different radio channel) that's for public
usage.

I ended up setting up a third vlan secured via WPA2 to support my SB
which is running wireless in the bedroom.

I'm fairly certain that I'm a fringe case here, but thought I'd ask.

[slim] Re: Default Interface Issue in SlimServer 6.5

2006-11-14 Thread agbagb

Oh, I see: thanks!

It's interesting that in the CURRENT PLAYLIST panes below the
problematic NOW PLAYING window, everything does fit (at least in my set
up). So, if Slimserver itself could automatically truncate the contents
of NOW PLAYING, you wouldn't really lose any valuable information (as
the NOW PLAYING contents are of course repeated in CURRENT PLAYLIST).
I kind of thought they were suggesting that *I* edit all my track lists
(I have an - over - suspicious mind). Certainly a convenient
software trucation would work. It's one of those things that just
*looks* annoyingly ugly, rather than having any real effect.

I'll try loading a copy of SlimServer 6,3.1 onto the laptop tomorrow to
see if my memory that this problem wasn't evident in that version is
right or wrong (as it so often is.). I have a sense that the
DEFAULT INTERFACE is slightly different between 6.3 and 6.5 - but it's
easy to get those comparisons wrong on the fly.

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 - comments please?

2006-11-14 Thread MelonMonkey

I think I've read enough not to get the 770 - which I was also
contemplating. I was planning to restyle the 770 skin with all new
graphics and make it much more finger friendly. Such a device has a
lot of promise and a lot more can be done to create a fantastic
consumer-level UI that anyone would be able to use at a party.

But the pitfalls seem to be in the device itself. I won't be able to
live with something that crashes when using its own built-in web
browser. That's just not something that a company like Nokia should
ever release in any software update.

I suspect the performance of the current skin might be able to be
improved slightly depending on what people actually want to do with it.
One way is to streamline it a bit. Doing it carefully of course, not
with an axe just by chopping out huge features. But if the device is
slow to begin with, there's not much that's going to be able to change
that.

I'm not sure if Nokia will stand behind the 770. The rumored images of
its sequal are completely incorrect and not at all of a product in the
same device class.

If I were a betting man I'd put my money on Logitech eventually coming
out with some type of graphical controller. With or without ties to
their Harmony product line. Who knows, maybe if Apple releases a
full-screen WiFi iPod we can hack that as a controller. ;)

In any case a PDA is not an really an option due to the limited
resolution, small screen and generally poor button selection/placement.
And I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but Telcanto just looks like complete
crap, so much so that I wouldn't be able to run it myself, let alone
show it to anyone else at my home. I think letting people use one of
the Macs here for browsing is going to be the best option for a little
while.

I'm looking forward to using something that both looks and works even
better than the Sonos controller, but I'm willing to wait for a
suitable hardware platform to do it on.

If your laptop is connecting to the internet via an 802.11 interface,
that means that the music data is making _3_ wireless hops --

The whole point of buying a wireless SB3 was to have it located in

It means that one of the links, either server to router or squeezebox
