[slim] how to download 6.5.1?

2006-11-19 Thread eschurr

I want to install slimserver 6.5.1 (apparently it behaves better with
iTunesUpate than prior versions) but i can't figure out how to do it.
when i follow the URL on the Downloads part of the website it takes me
to a set of links. They're all labeled 6.5.0 except for one which is
labeled 6.5.1 but it's a DEB file (what's that?)

I'm sure this is easy if you know what you're doing and clearly in this
instance i don't. :)

Help.

lets try this again...

I may have read this wrong in the first place. The OP wants to have
File.ext displayed in the web interface.
At this time, it isn't designed to work this way as it is much
preferred to use tagging.

The web interface automatically includes links to the album and artist
when the titleformat doesn't already
include ARTIST and/or ALBUM. File.ext would not include these,
therefore the skins will have those extra links.
However, the artist and album links should only appear IF an album and
artist is defined. If you want these removed, perhaps get rid of the
artist/album tags that you don't need and also get rid of the GuessTags
formats so that the server doesn't try to use the filename to create
tags (unless you can create a GuessTags format that matches your
filenaming and creates useful tagging for you)

What MAC address does the SB report? Does it match the MAC printed on
the bottom? Do you use DHCP? Have you tried a static IP address?

And where does it stop, does it connect to the router then not to
SlimServer, or does it not connect to the router at all?

Vdorta - not sure if this is your problem but have you disabled "Show

Also, you can do much better than just stuffing all that info in the
file name, if that's what you are doing. Use a combination of erland's
CustomScan plugin (to read the tags that Slimserver doesn't normally,
like WORK) and Michael's MusicInfoScr plugin to lay it out just how you

Sorry, but which comment am I reading way to much into? The quote was,
"we have had a handful come back with the same problem", with reference
to a failed 5V power supply. Where was the speculation, that sounded
like a statement to me? There are at least another two faulty units
that have not been received back by you yet. ie. not included in the
handful. They may turn out not to have a failed power supply. I think
that my problem may be related to a failure in the supply. (Blown fuse
and the burnt component smell in the case from the forward PCB).

Anyway, thankyou for responding. I will be returning my Transporter and
SB3 pre-order package for a refund. The failure rate is too great in my
opinion for a high-end component.

[slim] Connecting SqueezeboxV3 to remote SlimServer

2006-11-19 Thread kilzo

Hi there,

I have seen many posts and FAQs about accessing a SlimServer on your
local network from a remote location, with Softqueeze or with the
"stream.mp3 trick". But what I am trying to accomplish is the opposite.
A friend of mine has a web hosting company and we had this idea of
running a SlimServer on one of his boxes. This way, him, me and a
couple of other friends all owning a Squeezebox could all use this one
server and share our music collections this way. The SlimServer
software seems to have all the features required: username/password+IP
address based access restriction etc. But the SqueezeboxV3 player seems
to only be able to detect local SlimServers. Is there a way to instruct
an SB to connect to a specific (remote) server, that it could not find
using the default "autodetect" behaviour?

Thanks!

Since most of my music is classical, which has its own tagging
problems, my personal solution includes manual tagging (mostly on the
excellent Mp3tag program and sometimes directly on Windows Explorer) of
the exact information I want the SB to display: Composer, Work,
Orchestra, Conductor/Soloist, Track Number and Track Title. The most
direct way to do this is by choosing "file.ext". I don't need ".flac"
to show, but that is the best option Slimserver gives me at this time.
With jazz and pop music I don't have to work as much.

I'm interested to know why you so this. Is it because you use wavs
which don't support tags (which doesn't look to be the case judging by
your signature)? Otherwise why not tag the files correctly and then use
either the default Slimserver display stuff or install Michael Herger's
excellent MusicInfo plugin to expand your display options?

Hi-

Thanks,

P.S. Firefox keeps trying to download a .php file when I click search

So I shouldn't sell my TP before the power supply fails? :-)

BTW I love the way the TP works and sounds, zero problems and guests

Actually, "doesn't come on" could be caused by practically anything,

Anyone care to confirm the digital in does output to the balanced

BOOTPC/BOOTPS are the same ports used by DHCP, which is how (unless you
give it static settings) the Squeezebox gets its IP number. Basically a
Squeezebox (or any device that you havent assigned a static IP to) will
send out a broadcast that says, "Help me, my Mac ID is
00:DE:AD:BE:EF:00, who knows what I should do?" and the DHCP server
(usually the router) will respond with "This is your IP, Netmask,
gateway, dns server" (and sometimes throws out additional stuff, but
thats what matters for a Squeezebox)

The BOOTP protocol is sort of the predecesor to DHCP: DHCP offers a lot
more settings than BOOTP did, so it just reused the same ports.

[slim] Re: SlimServer trying to connect to Roku - how to stop?

2006-11-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

In SlimServer, go to Server Settings - Security and set Block Incoming
Connections to "Block".

Then whitelist your Squeezebox IP, your SlimServer IP and the IP of any
other machine you want to connect to SlimServer (i.e. your laptop). If
you leave the Roku's IP out, SlimServer won't try to contact it and
will ignore any packets from it.

Just make sure you don't forget to include the IP address of the SB3,
the SlimServer and other network devices or you will see how effective
this blocking is...

[slim] XML is killing my SlimServer

2006-11-19 Thread hactar

My SlimServer (6.3 - 6.5.1) would shut itself down within 30 mins, with
no notice, except for this event.
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following
information is part of the event: Assert_Defined failed:
Cache::BaseCache line 194

When I ran it from the command prompt, with no debugging, I got this
very obscure Perl error:
Assert_Defined failed: Cache::BaseCache line 194

When I turned on almost all debugging options (except d_select), I
noticed that just before it crashed, it did something related to RSS
and XML. Sorry, I forgot the precise error, and I don't want to
recreate it.

When I turned off both Podcasts and RSS feeds, the problem went away
.

Note also that when I turned on nearly all the debugging features, my
computer actually shut itself down (instantly, not a normal shutdown).
This occurred several times while running slim from command-line with
all debug parameters on.

[slim] Amplifier that SqueezeBox can turn on?

2006-11-19 Thread tharrison

I am looking for an amplifier that can be turned on automatically by
SqueezeBox for my bedroom. I have in-wall speakers of modest size and
an unpowered subwoofer, currently attached to a stereo receiver. To
use my SqueezeBox as an alarm, I need to keep the receiver on all
night.

As a second alternative, anything that would power on my receiver when
the SB needed it, and off when not would be great (although I doubt it
has a soft-power-switch/standby mode).

I have kind of a similar hope for my Bose Wave Radio, which we have in
the kitchen. It would be nice to have the SB remote control that, at
least power, and perhaps the Aux button.

Any help.

I've been experiencing the same troubles and I thought you'd found a
silver bullet here -- my usually rock solid stream, Otto's Baroque
(http://64.62.253.223:9030), was stuttering badly today after only 5-10
seconds. When this happens I've taken to pausing the stream for about
ten seconds and it seems to fix it, at least for up to a few hours. But
no go this morning. So I tried this and it worked -- for about 2
minutes, and then it stuttered just as badly as before.

I'd originally put this problem down to some kind of flow control being
used by my cable internet provider. But why it should only happen on
some streams and not others doesn't necessarily fit with that
diagnosis. It also doesn't fit the fact that I can listen to the same
stream in Windows Media Player without any difficulty.

[slim] More Cover Art weirdness

2006-11-19 Thread durufle

I rip cd's to individual folders and then I place a cover.jpg in each
folder -- had been going OK, but I am now experiencing an issue where
slimserver is not reading the cover.jpg out of the albums folder, but
instead, its reading a cover.jpg from ANOTHER album. I have performed
many "clear and rescan" yet it doesn't seem to be helping.

I should mention that the cd's that exhibit this problem are of the
same work. Ie. 2 different versions of Durufle's Requiem. That being
said, I have other versions of this work in the system without issue.

Help?

Sure, someone is going to get unlucky, but it would seem to me that
'problematic hardware' has bitten more than a few of us. There are 3
others with what would appear to be the same problem since you posted
the quote that a 'handful' had already been returned. 'We are looking
into either stress testing the internal power supply or upgrading it
with something more robust.' That comment suggests to me a design
fault, poor quality components, and/or that the power supply is
operating right on the edge of the envelope. Statistically, the number
of people who have seen this issue is growing and it would seem to me
that it has already grown past the point of a couple of people being
'unlucky'.

I'm sorry, but having waited for the UK distrib and dealers to receive
stock and fill orders, whilst watching others who had not pre-ordered
have their order delivered whilst I waited, it only compounds my
frustration to receive a unit with a 'faulty' power supply that
could/would/should have been avoided if the unit had undergone a decent
soak test.

Perhaps Sean would care to comment on the failing power supply issue?

[slim] Re: Squeezebox and Infrant ReadyNAS NV

2006-11-19 Thread kdf

not likely possible, as the ML plugin for slimserver accesses the DB via
a COM object installed by Moodlogic on a Windows PC. This type of
object is windows only. The format of the ML database is simply MS
Access with a very easily obtained password (it's plain text in the
slimserver code). However, I've not seen any modules for perl that
have any ability to get data from an MS Access DB without relying on
Windows specific libraries.

It may be possible to connect the DB as an ODBC source, then create a
hook form slimserver to get that data from there, but I'd put that one
in the far-more-effort-than-what-is-gained category.

[slim] Re: Missing songs in iTunes playlists

2006-11-19 Thread moby_uk

Hi Tom,
Your post is off-topic to mine, but all my tracks are definately
present - 9083 in Slimserver, 9083 in iTunes.

You are right though, slimserver needs to get fixed if it is to go
mainstream, everything from the lack of a simple upgrade, through to
the bugs (I was running 6.5 beta without issues). Don't get me wrong, I
*love* my Slim system - it is easily the best peice of technology I have
bought (close 2nd to my ReadNAS), but I'm a techie and I am getting
bored with playing with nightlies - your average consumer simply will
not tolerate it.

Anyway, back onto topic, can anyone help me with my empty playlists?

Thanks,
Phil

Ceejay >>> I don't use CustomScan. I'm using the 61003 version of
LazySearch. I did install the more recent version of LS; that was
when a first noticed the problem with the scanning, and I blamed Stuart
for it!

But much else was also changing at the time - I was re-ripping most
of my CD collection to FLAC, for instance; so the files and directory
structure were much altered, too. And in any case reverting to the
earlier version of LS did not resolve the issue.

Do you think something was changed by updating LS and not put right
by rolling it back? I could try updating LS again, if you think that
would help.

Discussion here... http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18324

There is also a plugin which claims to do the "don't play zapped songs"
thing but it doesn't look like it has been updated for 6.5 yet...

Agreed.

There are quite a few desireable features that SS doesn't have,
especially in the UI/usability area. It is getting better, albeit
slowly. I guess we all have to make our own tradeoffs in terms of
usability and functionality. IMHO there are many parts of SS which are
very well developed, it can do some pretty smart stuff, which is why I
use it.

The best thing is to ask the questions and to contribute to the
enhancement requests.

Might you have some plugins causing the problem? There are some which
participate in the scanning process and which might mess you up,
especailly if you don't have the latest versions. LazySearch or
CustomScan spring to mind.
