[slim] Re: SB3 und Sony psp - wie geht das??

2006-11-26 Thread Rippn Richie

Hallo Michael,
der psp eigene browser läuft schon.

http://deinserver:9000/Handheld/[/url]

"deinserver" damit ist die ip von dem rechner gemeint, der Slimserver
und die ext. Festplatten bedient, also mein Musikserver?

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Scan Crashing (W2K setup)

2006-11-26 Thread Amadeus

Thanks for the help. I was able to execute this command.

I was able to rescan my library. It crashed at the end of the scan
with the error message "scanner.exe has encoutered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

(I used to use McAfee and now I use Kaspersky 6.0 with settings to
ignore the slimsever subfolders, as suggested in other threads).

I don't really have a question with this post, except that crashes
continue to occur.

I pasted the output of the command prompt window here:

I'm having it start at login, so then I suppose the service is turned
off, and slim.exe is run as an app. And I suppose then that if I
changed it to start at boot, the service would be changed to Automatic
and would be running?

[slim] Re: Slimserver locks up when starting?

2006-11-26 Thread dupreesdiamond

Well I took the following steps:

uninstall
reboot
shut down McAfee
delete windows\temp\*
reinstall
shut down slimserver
delete windows\temp\*

run the command mentioned above:
=
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>Slimserver --d_import --d_scan
--d_info --wipe --progress

'Slimserver' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
=

Tried it as:
slim --d_...

which resulted in:
Unknown option: wipe
Unknown option: progress
Usage: Slim [--audiodir ...

So I skipped that whole step...and went into the Web Admin pages...same
behaviour as mentioned above...I initially get to the admin page but any
click gets me to an "unable to connect" message then shut-down/restart
hangs

I should add that it will look the same in the list of processes
running - shown as 'slim.exe' - except that when running as a service
the user name displayed will be SYSTEM, while when running as a user
program it will be the name of the logged in user.

Lots of people run it with antivirus software just fine: disabling it
is a cheap method of seeing "is this interfering? will I need to tweak
my Antivirus software so that it doesn't mess with database files? Or
do I need to change my firewall settings so that I am allowing network
access?"

If disabling it makes it suddenly work, then you know that was the
problem and then you would get help on making sure your settings
allowed what needed to be allowed when you turned your antivirus and
firewall back on.

[slim] Re: stream ripping

2006-11-26 Thread aubuti

I still think that it would be misguided to write a plugin for what is
basically a simple OS-level function (that is somewhat tangential to SS
at that). But on the other hand, I suppose the value-added a plugin
could offer would be the interface where you specify the recording
schedule. You'd need fields for (1) IP for the source, (2) start time,
(3) stop time, (4) location/name for saving the stream, and possibly
(5) an option for making it weekly/daily/etc. Like a lot of settings,
that would be easy using HTML fields in the slimserver web interface,
and technically-possible-but-rather-tedious in the remote interface.

One other thing to consider would be how/where to save the ripped
stream. For example, like most security-conscious users I run
slimserver with very limited privileges, including read-only access to
the directory where my music library lives. This isn't an issue if the
cron/scheduler job is run as a user that has requisite privileges, but
it is a problem if run as a slimserver plugin.

Then there's the issue of the copyright status of the content that is
being ripped. A lot of sites that stream expressly forbid ripping of
the stream. Of course, that issue is there front and center with
streamripper itself, with or without a plugin. But it's worth
remembering, imho.

service or not.

This sounds like the inevitable confusion caused by recent changes to
SlimTray:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4131

http://svn.slimdevices.com/?rev=10193&view=rev

SlimServer is installed as a service, but you have the option of
running it as a user program. Why? Seems like it's mostly to address
the issue of SlimServer accessing mapped network drives.

I'm assuming Windows,

1. Reboot
2. Stop the Slimserver service
3. Make sure All Virus and Spyware scanners are disabled
4. Delete all files and folders in C:\Windows\Temp
5. CD "C:\Program File\Slimserver\server
6. Slimserver --d_import --d_scan --d_info --wipe --progress

This will produce a lot of information. but will generally stop on the fatal

Tbat is, are you going to the Services page, and it has it as
"Running"?

Mine has it as type Manual, and does not show it as running.

However, slim.exe *is* running in the process list.

Why is the service installed if it's not running *as* a service, but as
a separate process? Or does that service merely kick off slim.exe, then
die?

Can't help with the crashes, but I'll take a crack at answering best I
can. The following explanation assumes you don't use iTunes or
MusicIP, each of which appears to cause a whole other class of bugs
when it comes to scanning.

A clear/rescan completely deletes everything in the SlimServer database
and starts all over. This is still the best was of making sure the data
in the SlimServer database matches your actual music library. From what
I can tell there's no difference in the time it takes to run a
clear/rescan vs a new/changed scan. The only practical difference is
that with a new/changed scan you can continue to browse and listen to
your music while the scan is running.

One issue with a clear/rescan that seems to be ongoing is that while
you'd _expect_ it to essentially give SlimServer a fresh view on
things, SlimServer's caching of files and artwork can cause problems.

A new/changed scan keeps the data in the database while it goes through
the library looking for changed files, new files and deleted files and
updates the database accordingly.

New files are files for which a reference doesn't exist in the
database. My experience is that the scanner never screws up cataloging
new files in a new/changed scan.

Changed files are files that have a different modified timestamp than
the one in the database. Same location (directory path) and filename,
but different times. I would assume that it doesn't matter if the
timetamp on the file is newer or older. The scanner is good at picking
these up, but if you've changed tag data then old data often remains in
the databse and can cause confusion. The scanner isn't very good about
removing data that should be deleted from the database. For instance,
if you had a single album by "Johny Cash" and then retagged all the
tracks to read "Johnny Cash" you'll likely end up with both versions of
the artist name when you browse.

Deleted files are files that no longer exist. Like changed files, the
scanner isn't particularly good at removing the data that should be
removed from the databse.

One thing to keep in mind: Whenever you rename files or folders, or you
move files to a different foler, it's the same thing as deleting files
and then adding completely new files. The scanner is likely to pick up
the "new" files and read their metadata, but it may not remove the old
data.

The problem is likely related to your virus scanning software.

Some scanners appear to have problems releasing the file in a timely
manner.
See if you can tell your scanner software to skip or ignore files with the
MYI or MYD extension.

[slim] Re: Stuttering, crossfade, Buffer empties and doesn't fill up

2006-11-26 Thread caldvd

My router used to default to 11, however, when I updated the firmware
(which had a date of Oct. 2006), it now says ch. 6. I could try
changing it to one as well.

I ordered a D-Link (ANT24-0700) 2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor
Antenna for $16.00 after rebate on Amazon ( + free shipping).

I put the SB3 up higher (on top of the center speaker) which seems to
help. And, I repositioned the standard antenna to point towards the
SB3.

So far, it has been playing all day with only one stuttering moment,
and I was standing there watching it and again it was hung up between
songs (would not load the next song w/ out stuttering). At that point
to get it going I waved it in the air, which worked, and decided to put
it up higher on the center speaker. Since then, maybe 4 or 5 hours no
stuttering. But perhaps the humidity is low today?

One more question: If I go hardwired, am I guaranteed to never, ever,
have stuttering?

Thanks,
tek

[slim] What counts as 'new and changed music'?

2006-11-26 Thread Diana

Friends >>> I've been having some problems with scanner.exe, which has
been hanging part way through scans. After a clean install of a 6.5.1
nightly, the 'clear and rescan' now works fine. But 'look for new and
changed music' still results in scanner.exe stalling so that I have to
shut it down manually - when I can: it sometimes hangs Windows, too,
and a 'press and hold power switch' is the only answer.

I'm now mostly only rescanning after I edit some tags, move some files
from one directory to another, or edit some filenames. Might these
changes be more than 'Look for new or changed music' can cope with?

I'd be grateful for an explanation of the difference between the two
sorts of scan. I'd also be grateful to know if there are limitations
on the use of 'look for new and changed music'. Suppose an expert user
was going to do a rescan: what would decide that person to use one sort
of scan rather than the other?

New Music also goes by the File Modified time stamp, so if you have

BTW - Before doing anything else, I would look at changing the wireless
channel on your router.

All of these wireless routers default to channel 11, so it's likely
that any routers nearby are affecting your signal strength.

Just changing to channel 1 can move your signal far enough out of range
of noise caused by your neighbours.

You might need to re-config the SB3, but it's worth a try.

I have similar issues.

I am using XP Pro on a Dell 8400. I have clean installed the latest
6.5.1 after uninstall 6.5.0 via Windows and removed the directory
itself after reboot.

I have random crashes and always a crash at the end of a scan of the
library. I cannot display album art in album view, but I can display
album art for each album when selected individually. I do not have
audible squeals or noises between tracks as mentioned in this thread.
I have contacted SB support (friendly yes, solutions no) and I have
reviewed reported bugs.

I use all default settings and default folders with no added plugins.
I use the Nokia 770 skin which requires 6.5.x, so 6.3.1 is not an
attractive option.

I tried the command in the last post:

type "c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe --d_scan --d_import
--d_info" and press enter.

My compiler does not seem to recognize this command. I get the error
"'c:\program' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program, or batch command".

Suggestions? Is it the space between the words 'program' and 'files'?

[slim] Place for feature request

Sorry, I put this into the General Discussion section, not sure if
that's where feature requests go.

For the SB3, I'd love to see an NTP client built into the piece
directly. The SB is used as a clock in the living room (of course in
addition to being one of my most prized pieces of audio equipment).
Anyway, in the spirit of being more environmentally friendly, I'd like
to turn my main machine off when not in use, but I'd like to have the
clock functionality still work without a slimserver machine.

If this is already possible, and I have to do a better job at

Shut down what doesn't diable in task manager. If it works get rid of

Look at your performance tab in task manager when slim is starting
under condition that makes it fail. If resource meters are pegged, you
need to take care of that first, considering whether or not you run
McAfee. XP should have 512MB physical RAM to run McAfee and SS together
easily. If your resources are fine, confirmed by performance tab then
there is a bad install of something, or a conflict. Even though win95
was supposed to eliminate memory violations, it still happens. IMO
McAfee is a big expensive hog, which can be replaced by free software
which has no such problems. Even Microsoft has protection software now
which works good.

Thanks for the input. I delayed feedback til I had a chance to see

time, but early reviews last night were good (no popping sound).
Appreciate the input...great forum for help! For what it is worth: I

cp1252. Using wireless SB, but caved in and cabled it just so it is a
bit faster and more responsive. Also, in the for what it is worth
department...I NEVER have the popping sound when streaming to WinAmp on
my desktop computer (where SS is located). All of the popping occurs
(hopefully "occurred") when using the SB. Not sure if that is a clue.
