If I do only set "/" and after the rescan set a ";" it seems to work.
But only if I change somethin in that option field. Is this already
listed as a bug? As I understand more than one separator should/could
be entered there...

[slim] Re: Slimserver wants a FAST machine

2006-12-27 Thread wcburnette

I ran my tests from the SB3. I clicked on a remote to change playlists,
and I waited until sound actually came from the speakers.

I ran another set of tests as you requested, using the SlimServer web
interface running on a browser on the server machine to change
playlists. I wasn't able to save the logs this time, but the results
were better, but similar:

2250 -> 80: 4 sec
80->300: 10 sec
300->80: 6 sec
80->300: 13 sec
300->2250: 39 sec
2250->300: 16 sec
200-> 2250: 30 sec
2250->22000: 248 sec

Any other ideas on what the bottleneck is?

although nobody has yet figured out WHY the executable should be
experiencing this because it is a simple wrapper to the QT library
calls. Although I have not yet verified this, the alac executable
which is now used to play ALAC files should not experience this issue.
Anyone playing ALAC files with the mov123 executable will experience it.
Similarly, since AAC is played using mov123, it will also experience
it. To solve this issue, either mov123 needs to be fixed (somehow!) or
needs to be entirely replaced (like was done with the alac executable).

First thing.. Run the network test! :)

crank it up to 2000kbps, it should stay at 90%+ for atleast 10min.

Next thing is change wifi channels. 1, 6, or 11.. just change the

[slim] FLAC album art weirdness (stupid noob tricks)

2006-12-27 Thread totoro

I recently transcoded my collection from alac to flac. As part of the
process, I stuck all of the album art in the same directories as their
respective albums, all named "cover.jpg" or "cover.gif".

My tree structure is left over from itunes, so it's
Artist/Album/*.flac, cover.jpg

Weirdly, a few of the covers just don't appear in the web interface, no
matter what I do. The directories in question don't have any weird
characters in their names (there are spaces, but this is winxp, so I
wouldn't think this would be a problem, and the vast majority work
fine).

I can't see any obvious commonality here: the ones that aren't showing
up are all .jpg files. They open up fine in gimp, I've tried re-saving
them at different sizes, etc, all to no avail.

But I've tried uninistalling and reinstalling the server, and exactly
the same files ended up not working, so there must be _something_ about
them the server doesn't like.

Has anyone else noticed this kind of behavior? Is it something to do
with the db getting wedged in a funny state?

On that topic, is there a mysql client people like to use for browsing
the table structures, executing and looking at results of queries, etc?

It sounds like you are experiencing some radio interference on your
wireless channel. Have you tried changing your wireless channel? Are
there other networks in range that are conflicting with yours? How
about a microwave oven, cordless phone, or another electrical device?

I experience the same symptoms occasionally when the microwave is
running.

Also, from posts here it appears that 6.5.0 is not recommended, and
that you should try a 6.5.1 nightly.

I hope this helps.

I'm guessing your music is on a network attached drive ? If so, the

However, the unofficial workaround is about halfway down this thread

[slim] Re: Slimserver ports and protocols

2006-12-27 Thread Anthony

Well, I can't say I figured out what's going on, but it's working now
(the way it should).

I moved the server protol off of 9000 since some remote admin service
also uses it and seems to be the likely target of an attack. So with
the new port, I methodically did the following:

Set new port in SlimServer.
Opened the port in the Linux firewall for TCP
Opened the port in the router for TCP

Now everything works! Go figure. Could have been the order I did
things, could have been the fact my dynamic dns wasn't working last
night, could have been a corrupt routing table that had stale
information and didn't know the IP changes. Screwy though, and it
works now, so no complaining.

Howeve I also got SoftSqueeze working and love it much better than any
streaming application! Definitely getting a SB3/Transporter as soon as
funds are available.

Thanks for all the help.

[slim] Slimserver 6.5 web browser performance

2006-12-27 Thread lhquam

I recently upgraded from Slimserver 6.3.1 to 6.5.0, running
on a big AMD64 Fedora 5 machine. The scanning performance may
have improved, but the performance through the web interface
is much slower.

When in select Genre/Jazz , which contains albums by 85 artists,
Slimserver 6.5 takes about 10 seconds to generate the web page info
for the artists vs only 1-2 secs for 6.3.1. Performance from
the SqueezeBox appears to be ok.

Is this browser performance change due to mysql or something else?
Is there any performance tuning that can improve the performance?

Interesting. I can't argue with the results, but I can't argue with the
netstat output either. Huh.

I wonder if the problem is with my Dlink router. Maybe it's not truly
passing 9000 TCP unless I tell it to pass both protocols. Or it lets
smaller packet data through but is blocking packet streams (but how
would it know the difference if it was all TCP).

Weird. I'll keep hacking away at it and see what I come up with.

2006-12-27 Thread Anthony

Thanks. I think iTunes streams need the UDP 9000 Port because it didn't
work until I opened that up on the router. It was weird because the
stream would connect and I could get the server on a browser.

I uploaded a playlist, but the server would never "play". I'd click on
it but it wouldn't register and of course, the player still didn't play
anything even though it said "Welcome to SlimServer" and showed the
song title that was cued up.

It almost seemed like a return communication from player to server
wasn't getting through. I don't know why that would be a datagram, but
it didn't work until the UDP port was opened.

Weird. I wonder if SoftSqueeze and the other players have this
requirement.

9000 TCP is used for the Web interface and streaming to Squeezebox players.
9000 UDP is not used for anything.
3483 TCP is the control channel for Squeezeboxen (display, IR, etc.)
3483 UDP is used for SB->SlimServer discovery, and all control and
streaming to the old SLIMP3 players.

Hope that helps. :)

[slim] Customer support experience :)

2006-12-27 Thread KlaymenDK

Hi,
just a quick note on a swell customer support experience! :)

Back in march a friend of mine bought a two-pack-for-$100-off offer and
gave one to me. Just the other day mine would no longer power on (even
the telltale glow on the display wasn't there). After swapping around I
determined that the wallwart was to blame.

So on December 18th I send off an email to support to inquire about the
warranty process, attaching the original purchase receipt email. Not two
hours later the reply is 'where do you want the new power brick shipped
to?'
I give them my address, marvelling at how simple and fast the service
is.

Today (Dec 27th) UPS dropped by with a box. :) It was even the correct
plug for Denmark.

Thanks guys!

It is actually discnumber then tracknumber.
For mp3 this is the TPOS tag (format /), for flac
use DISC and DISCC (disc count).
All tracks from all discs need to have the exact same album title for
this to work properly.
Have a look at your tags to see if there are any differences in the
album tag or if there are any discnumber tags.

2006-12-27 Thread slimpy

Everything you said in your first post was actually right.
Usually if you add an ALBUMARTIST tag to an album with multiple artists
the album gets listed under the album artist as well as Various artists.
But only if you have at least one other proper album by that artist
(doesn't seem to be the case in your example).
Slimserver treats files within a directory as a compilation if they
share the album name and have more than one artist in total and don't
have COMPILATION=0 set.

Indeed, off isn't really "off"--it's just another state that has its
own array of settings (different brightness settings, different
screensaver settings, and different playback settings--i.e.: paused).
I think it's just to make people feel good because we're used to
turning things off when we're not using them. I like it. I'm still
used to the "off" paradigm and were it not there I imagine a lot of
time would be wasted explaining to people why there's no power button.

[slim] WFAN streaming URL for internet radio tuners

2006-12-27 Thread SethD

What is the latest streaming URL for WFAN that will work in the
SqueezeNetwork/squeezebox? CBS radio will not release this due to it
being privileged information. Right now WFAN is embedded in a Flash
Player that will not run in the SB. I use the SB at work to bypass a
firewall, I cannot receive WFAN and its Flash Player at work because of
this firewall. Any suggestions? Is there some sort of "Flash Player URL"
that will run in the SB? I am having the same problem with 1010WINS.
Your help would be appreciated.

[slim] Re: What does "Automatic Display Brightness" mean?

2006-12-27 Thread grimholtz

Yes, many thanks for the clear answer. It's good to know I'm not the
only one with this question.

But this brings me to another (perhaps existential) question. Why is
there an "off" for the SB at all? I can press the "off" button, but the
power doesn't seem to ever turn off unless I unplug the device, and the
screen only turns off if I set "Brightness when off" to 0 (Dark).

IMHO, "off" on the remote and in the SlimServer is useless since the
device never really is "off" and the screen is only black if you set
this -"really obscure pref"- in a certain way.

So how does this relate to the "Idle" and "Off" brightness settings?
Are these settings irrelevant when auto dim is set to manual?

idle is when it is sitting idle, ie when the screensaver kicks in.. If
you have the auto brightness set to automatic, then when the player is
idle, you get the idle brightness setting. If it is set to manual,
then you get no change, and it stays at the brightness it was at until
you press the brightness button to change it. It was a preference for
those who didn't give a crap about any possible "burn-in" and
pathologically hated anything that was automatically changing things
when they weren't aware of it (most famous "my wife set it to dark and

Chalk it up to a long list of really obscure prefs that really don't

[slim] slimserver_safe

2006-12-27 Thread Bill Moseley
I'm running the 6.5.1 .deb.

Seems like slimserver_safe gets confused once in a while -- perhaps
slimserver crashes and it tries to restart -- and never gives up. My
logs get filled with this -- repeats ever second:

2006-12-26 07:17:22.6161 ERROR: There is already another copy of the SlimServer
running on this machine. (Address already in use)
2006-12-26 07:17:22.6230 MySQLHelper: stopServer() Running shutdown.

2006-12-26 07:17:30.5556 ERROR: There is already another copy of the SlimServer
running on this machine. (Address already in use)
[...]

Perhaps stopping is not working when attempting to rotate the logs
then it gets confused trying to restart. And indeed just now I had
two slimserver processes running (had to kill -9 them to get them to
die).

For yesterday it did this for quite a while:

$ zgrep -c 'already another' slimserver.log.1.gz
11592

I need to look at this more, but I'm wondering if it would not be
better to not use slimserver_safe. Can I point slimserver to an
existing (empty) database and have it use that?

It would appear wcburnette is experiencing some really long timer late
delays. I had a bunch of timer late delays in my performance logs as
well.

Can anyone explain what this message means or point me to documentation
on how the timers are being used and their purpose? I do have a
programming background so feel free to get technical or point me to
some source code. I don't have a good feel for the slimserver code yet,
and I'm rusty with perl but can probably slog through it.

If these timers are being used to trigger code execution, is there a
way to determine who's timer is late and what the system is doing while
delaying the timer event?

Thanks,

You didn't say what format you use. If it is flac add COMPILATION=0 to
all songs from that album. For mp3 there is no standard tag but I think
iTunes writes a compilation tag that slimserver picks up.
Do a "clear library and rescan" to make sure all changes are picked
up.

[slim] Various Artist handling in 6.5.0

2006-12-27 Thread SMC

I've just started using my SB3 and am very pleased with it. I have a
problem with slimserver which may result from incomplete understanding
of how it works.

I have several albums tagged with more than one artist for certain
tracks e.g. Steve Earle's 'El Corazon' has Emmylou Harris siging on one
track and is thus tagged as ARTIST steve earle; emmylou harris

Slimserver seems to use the presence of multiple artist tags to define
this album as a compilation. (Is this how it does it?)

Now in Server Settings\Behaviour\Compilations if I select 'Group
compilation albums together' the album 'El Corazon' shows up under
'various artists' but not 'Steve Earle'.

If I select 'List compilation albums under each artist' then I see the
album under Steve Earle but every artist for every compilation listed -
which I don't want.

I want to stick with 'Group compilation albums together' to keep the
artists who only appear on compilations out of the artists list BUT I
also want albums by one artist (with additional contributors on some
tracks) to show up under that artist and not just in 'Various artists'

Even if I set the tag ALBUM ARTIST or BAND to 'Steve Earle' the album
still only shows up under 'Various Artists' - This happens whether I
select 'List albums by band' or 'List albums by all artists for that
album'. Naturally I have the checkbox for band/orchestra at the top of
the page ticked.

Can anyone explain to me how to achieve this?

Perhaps...I guess the question really is: when "adjust automatically"
is turned on, exactly what events trigger the brightness to be
automatically adjusted, and what brightness levels are chosen when the
brightness is automatically adjusted? Is the automatic brightness
level pulled from a setting somewhere? It's funny that I've used this
product for over 3 years and still don't have a full understanding of
this particular setting (I've always just disabled it--don't like the
brightness doing anything automatically).

[slim] Slimserver ports and protocols

2006-12-27 Thread Anthony

Just a question regarding the networking of slimserver:

I found many threads that mention opening up ports 9000 and 3483 on UDP
(datagrams) and TCP (packets).

What is the function of these ports, individually?

I guess I want to know so I keep the bare minimum open to the outside
world (I'm also trying to debug a streaming problem -- stream connects
to slimserver, but is empty).

Is 9000 used only for the web interface? Is 9000(TCP) web and
9000(UDP) for streaming? Is 3483 for any client or just the
Squeezeboxes?

All information appreciated!

I wrote the Nokia770 slimserver skin code and I'm pretty proud of how
it's turned out thus far but, believe it or not, I'm in complete
agreement with the previous posters. Slim's IR remote is what I use to
control my squeezeboxen about 99% of the time. Works great, it's
responsive, does the job. Managing playlists and viewing cover art are
the drawbacks of the IR remote, but those drawbacks don't outweigh the
ease of use provided by the IR remote. Price tag is nice, too.

I see the UI endgame for me being a GUI, always-connected, touchscreen
that sits close to (or is part of) the squeezebox, handles cover art,
visually manages playlists, is silent, and is not as obtrusive as a
full-size LCD. That product doesn't really exist right now (aside from
the $12K Sooloos money pit), which is what drew me to start working on
the Nokia 770. The 770 should be considered a first-generation device
(even first in its class), and while loaded with "wow", it's not ideal
as a slimserver controller. I will say, however, that the device drove
some new thinking into slimserver skins, particularly with using AJAX
for a more responsive user experience. That bodes well for the future.

I'd also like a knob on the squeezebox, but of course I've said that
before...

cheers,
#!/ben

I purchased, but this isn't imported into slimserver's database.

Is there a way to filter by genre? I've got a bunch of audio books that
I really don't want imported.

Thanks, Ian

[slim] Web control panel not displaying

2006-12-27 Thread dazzla76

Hi guys,

I just got a new Squeezebox V3 and am having a small problem with it.
Well actually the problem seems to be more with slimserver.

I installed slimserver and started it, everything seems ok. no errors
or anything. But when i point firefox or safari to
http://localhost:9000 , http://127.0.0.1:9000 i just get a blank page.

The squeezebox seems to work fine, finds the server. the server has
found my itunes library on it's own. and the squeezebox plays my
library just fine.

I am running Mac OS X 10.4.8 on a Macbook pro. Slimserver 6.5
downloaded yesterday. The built in firewall is off.

Have i missed somthing in the setup? i'm sure i did everything in the
instructions, not that there is much to do apart from install and
start.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Dazzla76

A .deb file is a Debian package, and only useful if you're running
Debian Linux or a derivative such as Ubuntu.

[slim] Re: Q:Playlists updated but..music won't play!

2006-12-27 Thread Diana

There have been a number of threads about scanning problems due to
playlist issues - try a search.

Like you, I've had problems with the scan for new/changed music
(because scanner.exe itself does not terminate on my system for reasons
that remain unidentified even after much discussion with Slimdevices
support).

My solution - and the procedure routinely adopted by many, I understand
- is only ever to use clear and rescan. What happens when you use
that?

As for a progress monitor - there isn't one. And like me you may find
that the web interface never updates to tell you the scan is finished
(even when it has!).

My solution for this - on my Win XP system - is as follows:

# Start the 'Clear/rescan'
# open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del, and click the Task Manager
button)
# open the Processes tab, and click 'Image Name' to sort the column
alphabetically
# scroll down to scanner.exe - the value of its CPU activity in the
CPU column will be changing, and the CPU % at the bottom of the window
will rise (can reach between 50% and 100%)
# After a while (15-20 mins for 3500 tracks on my system) scanner.exe
will finish and disappear from the Task Manager list - but the scan
process is not finished yet! (CPU usage remains elevated.)
# The two process, mysqld.exe and slim.exe become active - shown by
the changing numbers in their 'CPU' column values, and by the sustained
CPU usage at the bottom of the Task Manager screen.
# Eventually, the CPU values for mysqld.exe and slim.exe will return
to and stay at 00, and the CPU usage will drop back to 2%-4% (assuming
you're not simultaneously running other programs).
# If you now close Task Manager, and refresh the SlimServer web page
(just click 'Home', or press Ctrl+f5) your library statistics will be
displayed.

Hope this helps.

But, guys, isn't this a ridiculous way to have to monitor scan
progress? Does anyone have a better way? And I know that scanning and
screen updating may work fine for some people on some platforms - but
that doesn't help those of us for whom it doesn't :(

Very best wishes
