I have a similar problem as many others with 6.5.1

Some have been resolved with the new socketwrapper

Re: [slim] Upgrade to 6.5.1: Music won't play but Internet Radio will

2007-03-18 Thread ceejay

There are several threads on this... for example

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22272
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29223
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26881

and, just in,

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33731

A good start is to turn d_source debugging on (server settings - debug)
and try to play something - then look at the log file (link on the same
settings page).

[slim] Fails to play m4a files

2007-03-18 Thread y360

I have identical 6.5.2 slimservers with same music files on two
different PCs at home & work.
My work setup works fine, but home PC fails to play non-DRM m4a files
with following log.

The PC that fails has Avast antivirus instead of Symantec.
Both have ZoneAlarm which is configured correctly.

The socketwrapper is the new one from
http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper_0.12_20060220.zip

Any ideas ?

[slim] Lounge music station changed it's url.

2007-03-18 Thread NauticusLX

I listen to a shoutcast station called "Lounging Sound Hi-Fi". It had
the url
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=831695&filename=playlist.pls.
But it suddently stopped working. This music is SO great, especially
before bed. Does anbody know how to access it? Shoutcast has a number
of lounge stations, so it's not easy to re-track this particular one
down.

Any help would be appreciated.

What do you have set for FILE TYPES? SlimServer can't play ALAC
natively and it must be transcoded. Your selections are FLAC (which
requires an addition to QuickTime, but it is available) MP3 using LAME
or WAV.

That is way overkill. I ran for years on a P3-500 with 386MB, and
currently run on an AMD 2400+ (about 1.5 gHz) with a gig of ram, Wifi G.

Since ram is nearly free, I don't see any reason to not put in lots, but

Running Slimserver on a 600 mHz NAS really should be warned against.

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?

2007-03-18 Thread Laz

Guys,

I agree with the OP about remote latency, connectivity and buffering.
These are all a pain in the backside for me.

However, they are also own goals, because I'm using an underpowered
server, one of my wireless routers is surrounded by electronics, the
other is surrounded by more electronics and sits in a Faraday cage
style metal stereo rack, and I keep them at opposite ends of a house
with significant rebar. I'm perpetually amazed that my network works at
all. Even so, the only time latency becomes really ignificant is when
I'm working with both iTunes and slim at the same time.

As I see it, Logitech/Slim can deal with this issue by simply upping
the minimum required server spec and bandwidth requirements for the
broader release.

Most people will not be terrible stressed to see a requirement for a
2GHz+, 2GB+ @ 54MBs or better. If you want to get by on less powerful
hardware, you can, but don't be too surprised by the performance hit
you suffer.

That depends how your electricity is generated. It might not be a CO2
generating kind. Could be nuclear (which is very clean when it comes to
global warming) or even a green source such as wind if you're lucky.

Anyway, you could do like the airlines and politicians and just buy
"credits" to offset it ;) (and no I don't think that's actually a great
idea as it's doing nothing to actually address the pollution).

What about the Squeezebox itself though? How energy efficient is it
when not in use?

I'm thinking of sticking all my gadgets that don't need to be on 24/7
onto a separate power strip with a switch I can power on when needed.
Just leaves the TiVo and Sky box on all the time (oh and plus the
web/mail/file/p2p server in the cupboard :-D )

>From an old post of mine when I was seeing "random dropouts". I root

avoiding Microwave oven and adjacent WLAN Interference

So I looked into things tonight. My Microwave oven is running at
2450MHz. This is approximately WiFi channel 8.5 . Turn out I was using
channel 7 on my WLAN. It makes sense that I get interference from the
microwave. I doubt a the WiFi recevier has that great of rejection to
strong energy only 1.5 channels away, Also, I am no expert on Microwave
ovens, but I suspect the are not the most spectrally pure of noise
generators. Running at 2450MHz, they are still probably pumpin out some
junk at 7 or 8 MHz away.

So then what channel should I use? To answer that question I took my
laptop computer and used it as a receiver to measure my neighbors WiFi
Channels they are using. I am in ear shot of signals from my neighbors
on channels 1, 3, 6 (several folks on Ch 6), and 11.

So, I changed my WLAN to channel 4. Seems to be a channel that no one
near by uses and best of all, no more drop outs when my wife runs the
microwave oven!

[slim] Wake on Lan wakes the wrong MAC

2007-03-18 Thread Graham

I've got a squeezebox 3 (firmware v72) wirelessly connected to a router
and on to a pc in my garage. The garage pc connects wirelessly to the
router too, via a client bridge (Buffalo WBR-G54 running DD-WRT).
Everything works fine, except for Wake On Lan. I'd really like to get
this going, so here's the reason it's not:

A bit of packet sniffing with ethereal shows that the SB is sending its
magic packet to the MAC of the bridge rather than the MAC of the pc.
WOL is fully enabled on the pc, and I can wake it up using my wireless
laptop and a magic packet generator pointing at the correct MAC.

I can't see a way to tell the SB to use the correct MAC, as it seems to
work it out from traffic. Interestingly, windows gets the MAC correct
if you do a "nbtstat -a ", but SB is getting it wrong.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm sooo close to getting
my system working!

What file type are you trying to play?

If slimserver is running, and connected to the SB, but failing to play,
there may be a problem with some transcoding setup. Are you playing ALAC
by any chance? I seem to remember some people having problems with
those, there were some threads on the topic...

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?

2007-03-18 Thread sander

Well, I'm bringing up this one issue because I see it as something Slim
could possibly address in future releases, or should at least consider
IMHO.

The hardware I'm using has been advertised as compatible, and
acceptable according to both companies in a joint press release and on
both of their home pages as I recall. I paid an extra $50 for an
included wireless and I don't have a wired home. I'm not starting a
poll or submitting a bug report or a web protest page, overall I'm a
happy camper. I'm just saying based on my experience this is sometimes
a problem, and here's a possible solution.

Moore's law is still in effect and to continue to load everything on
the server is a mistake IMHO. The real hole in the thin client setup is
that chips keep getting faster, so basically all you end up doing is
crippling increasingly powerful chips with a mainframe/terminal based
approach.

Sitting 2 feet from my Squeezebox is a Galaxymedia TVisto multi-media
hard drive enclosure. It's fugly, there's no community forum that I
know of, it doesn't have a network connection, but for less than the
price of a Squeezebox you can get one with a 400GB hard drive and it
has most of the same audio playback functionality with video as well,
with no server at all.

I don't consider it a replacement for the Squeezebox, but for the
average user it's much more idiot-proof and if it had an led display it
would be a viable competitor.

I have a minor vested interest in Slim at this point and I'd like to
see an open technology succeed as opposed to some proprietary soup from
Redmond or Cupertino, but they really need to attack the performance
problem from every angle. The other guys are going to throw hardware at
the problem at every level, Slim's going to get buried by one of big
boys if they're not careful.

I don't want the Squeezebox to become some cumbersome beast, but it
seems to me there's some low hanging fruit which could make the
Squeezebox's UI more responsive, reduce network traffic, and server
load. If that's not the case then so be it, it's just an idea, and I
wanted to put it out here.

[slim] Upgrade to 6.5.1: Music won't play but Internet Radio will

2007-03-18 Thread Mike Tordoff

Hi:

I tried but have failed to upgrade to Slimserver 6.5.1. I have a
Windows XP computer and a Slimbox 3, with a wireless network
connection. Everything worked fine with Slimserver 6.2. Now, when I
try to play music from my hard drive, the name of the track appears on
the Slimbox but the progress bar does not progress. On the other
hand, I can connect and play radio stations with no problem.

Things I have tried:

-Hard reset (hold down Power on remote)
-New firmware (hold down brightness on remote)
-Reinstall
-Reinstall Slimserver 6.2.1
-Complete reinstall using Control Panel Remove Programs and then
deletion of Slimserver directory, then reinstall of 6.5.1

Any ideas about what to do next would be much appreciated,

Mike in Philadelphia

[slim] Squeezebox and Parasound Zamp

2007-03-18 Thread utowana

Am doing a mini kitchen/dining room remodel and will be pairing a new SB
(yes, black...very nice) with a Parasound Zamp. Here is a softball
question: am I correct that I need no more pre-amp than that supplied
in the SB?

Second question: does anyone have an in-wall speaker suggestion? I've
listened to some Polk's, but would love more options. Room is about 13
x 18 ft, hardwood floors, drywall construction. Price range somewhere
around $500 for the speaker set (give or take).

Last question: does anyone have a recommendation for an IR repeater
kit for use with a wall hanging LCD TV (so I can bury my cable box DVR
in the closet out of the way? They seem ridiculously expensive (e.g.,
the Niles exceeds $200).

Thanks! My second Squeezebox! Love it.

Unfortunately there are significant differences introduced with 6.5.0

Re: [slim] SB3 freeze and reset after 6.5.2 upgrade

2007-03-18 Thread Tarus

Thanks Richard for all your tips. They give me some ideas for further
investigation :)

I have two other computers on which I can install the slimserver. (BTW,
I've double checked and I had indeed installed the 6.5.1 archive which
seems to impose a firmware upgrade version 70).

I've triple check the network for duplicated addresses and I'm
convinced that I don't have any. I've also verified the router setting
and I've restarted the slimserver (dedicated PC) as well as the two
SB3, the switch and the router. I've turned down all other computer
systems on the network (BTW they all get DHCP addresses except for the
Slimserver PC which has a unique static IP address).

In any case, the problem still persists. One SB works flawlessly and
the other one keeps rebooting 2 seconds into playing a song. I haven't
tried ogg files yet. But I'll try this next along with a different PC
to host the server.

For now just to verify that I didn't have a bad hardware device, I've
reinstalled the Slimserver v6.2.1. Both SB3 now work perfectly well as
they used to. Both SB3 have automatically "downgraded" the firmware to
version 28. I haven't changed the rest of the hardware or network
configurations.

So this is definitively related to installing v6.5.1 in conjonction to
the firmware 70.

For now I'm okay and I'll do more experiments (with a different PC)
with 6.5.1 or even 6.5.2 as I've liked the new features of the v6.5.1.
I'll also play around a bit more with the CLI.

Thanks a lot for your help Richard. I'll let you know if I make any
progress with 6.5.1 on a different PC.

Cheers
Tarus

If you uninstalled, did you delete the SlimServer folder as well?

Any plugins? Are they known to be compatible with 6.5.0+?

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?

2007-03-18 Thread Paul_B

This is an interesting discussion. For Slim to penetrate the mass market
then they are either going to have to create a server solution to run
Slimserver or the SB4 is going to be a fatter client to offload the
server.

>From my own experience the SB3 is fantastic and changed the way I
listen to music. I am so glad the SB3 supports lossless formats and is
aimed at good audio reproduction. Playing MP3 at 128K through a decent
audio hi-fi setup is nonsense.

My system is wired and I have moved away from a NAS solution to
dedicated server. Howver the server is a Mini-ITX solution which I put
together for less than £400 and it consumes just just 25W. By NAS is
now purely a NAS device.

I believe streaming shows up the inadequacies of WiFi and this is not
the fault of Slim. If your can't run dedicated Cat5 then why not look
at using your power circuit and use the numerous Powerline devices on
the market?

Re: [slim] My scanning doesn't work

2007-03-18 Thread ceejay

Well, you said your files are MP3, but the error log shows it is trying
to find WAV files.

Here's a guess: your ripping program (EAC?) is creating playlists for
each album (you don't need these, BTW, but I think it might be a
default??). The playlists are pointing to WAVs. But you are then
transcoding to MP3 and deleting the WAVs (this is what EAC does).

So you are left with playlist files pointing to WAV files that don't
exist. Delete the playlist files and all will be well.

Just a theory, of course...

That's a very interesting remark: if you can use Moose's volume control,
but not the remote, than you've very probably got a communication problem
between your SB and the server, not a performance issue on the server.
Moose uses the same server to handle the volume as does using the IR
remote control. If this is instant, compared to the remote, then you
should check your network connection. Try using cabling instead of
wireless (if you do use it - haven't read all the details).

Re: [slim] How do I allow power-saving Standby mode?

2007-03-18 Thread Mike New

First of all, thanks to all who threw in their two-cents worth on this.

After trying some of the ideas, and then a few of my own, I got this to
work - pretty much.

Environment: Windows XP Pro, with a two-year old HP PC that has good
power management options.

Action #1: Disabling the Clock Screensaver had no affect on the
problem. The Squeezebox still re-awakened the PC seconds after going
into standby.

Action #2: The device manager for my network card (Realtek Fast
Ethernet NIC) had some fairly confusing settings for Wake on LAN
functions, but by checking the box "Only allow management stations to
bring the computer out of standby," I got the results I was hoping for.
The computer would enter Standby mode as planned, and would not wake up
until I pressed a key on the Squeezebox remote. If music was playing,
the system would not enter Standby mode until the music stopped.
Success!

An aside here - For testing purposes, I had the Standby Mode timer set
to a minute, which worked great except the computer would go into
Standby while the music was still playing. I finally figured out it
was because enough music was being buffered ahead that Squeezebox
wasn't asking for more before the timer expired. (FLAC files) I upped
it to 2 minutes and cured the problem.

Action #3: I'm halfway there. The PC will enter standby after the
music stops playing and wake up when I press a Squeezebox remote
button, but the Squeezebox alarm function won't work. Presumably the
alarm is controlled by Slim Server, which is peacefully slumbering in
Standby. I cured this by setting a Scheduled Task in Windows to wake
up an hour or so before the alarm is set to fire. (My Standby mode is
set at 2 hours.) Sure enough, the PC wakes up and the alarm fires as
scheduled and Slim Server begins playing.

Unfortunately, the fact that Slim Server is playing doesn't necessarily
mean any music is coming out. After being in Standby, SS occasinally
seems to forget where the volume is set, which means it's either muted
completely or so low I can't hear it. Touching the volume button on
the remote immediately cures the problem - assuming I'm awake.

Other than this niggly problem, however, everything works exactly as I
hoped. When I'm not using it, my PC now draws 3 watts instead of 100,
and tomorrow morning I'll feel like an environmental giant - if I'm
awake.

Cheers - Mike

Your server and network are not optimized for speed, yet you get
satisfying response 90+% of the time. You're complaining about speed
but you have chosen slower hardware.

Using even a cheap, throwaway PC as the server would likely eliminate
all the problems. A wired ethernet connection can improve response,
too.

Good that you solved your problem, but note once you connect to

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?

2007-03-18 Thread sander

SuperQ: Thanks for the clarification, I'm not an embedded programmer, or
even a regular programmer, but it seemed simple enough to me. I'm
running 6.5.1 and in general (90+% of the time) the response from the
Squeezebox is almost instantaneous, even artist searches in lazysearch,
but on the rare occasion that the volume doesn't work, I get very
frustrated as I don't want to have to use the component remote as
well.

Also I think at the level of investment ($200+ outside of special sales
:) ) the satisfaction level of the Squeezebox is lacking when you're
occasionally faced with this dilemma. People may tell me otherwise, but
I think regardless of the server power, in a wifi network you're always
going to get latency.

While I can understand the idea of feeding everything through the
server makes sense, in real world usage the response from the remote
trumps any control from the server in terms of volume. I sometimes use
Moose as an ersatz remote, but I would gladly sacrifice any volume
control from the server. If I want it silent from a server interface I
can always pause or stop it.

My feeling is everyone understands and experiences server lag on a
daily basis, but people get very frustrated when the completely lose
control of the UI.

My hope was that this was something that was being worked on, but it
sounds like it's part of the design. The goal of 7.0 so things should
only get better going forward and I can alway opt for another machine
to host my SlimServer, but I think making as much of the UI run local
on the Squeezebox will result in the most noticeable performance
improvements for many people.

I'm happy with the Slimserver/ReadyNas combo, but I'm nerdy enough to
forgive their shortcomings, and appreciate the great forums like this.
People ask me for recommendations all the time on this type of stuff,
I'd like to be able to recommend these devices, or similar, without
reservation. But it sounds like running Slim on anything besides a full
PC at this point would be too frustrating for the less technical. And
with most configurations costing more than $1000 in extra hardware and
effort just to run MP3 through their stereo people will just pass.

I work in IT so I have to apologize for poor design decisions at
multiple levels everyday, I don't need that at home as well. :)

Re: [slim] How do I allow power-saving Standby mode?

2007-03-18 Thread michel

As I understand Mike New's problem is, that his PC wakes up or does not
go into standby as long as his SB's are connected to mains power.
Mike, try disabling clock screensaver (and all other screensavers too)
so that the SB's display goes blank when powered down.
Additionally set WOL in device properties (WinXP) to magic packet only.
This prevents your server to wake up from network activity other than
SB's.
When I had clock saver active on my PC did not want to power down too.
Now I have running it for a year or so and standby (in my case
hibernation) works like a charm.

[slim] Random Song Mix is not so random

2007-03-18 Thread mswlogo

I only have 200 or so albums loaded.

I frequently use Random Song Mix.

But it seems to be biased towards the same albums over and over and
never touches other albums.

My server does get rebooted ocassionally. Is the random number
generator using the same seed on each boot or something?

Is there an alternate Random Playback plugin?

Thanks

Mike,

I'm totally with you. Just because we have other larger consumers of
energy doesn't make it is an excuse to forget about everything that
takes less. See my "Green" thread.

Just because your car/freezer wastes lots of energy does that mean you
skip recycling paper and plastic? Studid logic bringing the freezer
up.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33324&highlight=green

You can run a "green" server.

You need a network card/motherboard that can support wake on LAN. Which
does use a small amount of power 24/7.

I do have my Server Running with WakeOnLan. Problem is it's not very
user friendly because of a few bugs. See thread above.

I have made some progress by editing and understanding the
"PreventStandby" plugin. I think I know what I need to do now to make
it work more WakeOnLan friendly. Basically this plugin is dumb.

[slim] How can I play all my favourites/ add to playlist?

2007-03-18 Thread bazeeem

Hi, Been a happy squeezebox owner for 8 months now, Just One thing I
cant figure out.. Have added about 80 songs to my favourites. Id like
to play all my favourites, but the only way i can seem to do this is by
adding one song at a time from my favourites to my current playlist.
There must be an easier way surely?
Cheers

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze on 2nd computer

2007-03-18 Thread Ramage

It is easy to install softsqueeze on any of your networked PCs.

Open up the slimserver web interface on the PC you want softsqueeze to
be installed : http://:9000/default

On the home page "Help" area, click on softsqueeze, the page will
indicate whether you have java installed on your local machine (the one
you are browsing from).

Follow the instructions to install java, softsqueeze or both.

That's it.

Open the slimserver webpage on a different PC, and look for the
Softsqueeze link (it's in the Help section on the default skin).

That will enable you to install SoftSqueeze on the other PC.

Playback of MP3 files is fine.

On Vista I no longer see the MOV123 process in task manager.

Re: [slim] My scanning doesn't work

2007-03-18 Thread ceejay

The error suggests that there is a problem with a CUE file somewhere -
are you using these, or do you just have separate files for each
track?

You can also run, from the command prompt,

scan --d_scan --rescan

(and several other flags if you want), this puts extra info in the
output about the scanning that is going on.

Re: [slim] SB3 freeze and reset after 6.5.2 upgrade

2007-03-18 Thread RichardG

Sounds like duplicate IP address trouble. Or two slimservers that think
they should be responding to that SQB. The reset is happening very
quickly. Have you shutdown all devices in the network (unplug
switches/wireless AP/etc). And then restarted?

Do you have another computer that you can install slim 6.5.2 and just
test the faulty SQB?

Also, the SQB recieves a firmware update as part of newer versions of
slimserver. An update of the server may change how the SQB responds.

I have not used the RS232 interface. The CLI interface is a plugin for
controlling slimserver through a command line (telnet) interface.
"Telnet {slimserverip} 9090". Launch the web interface for a running
slimserver, and you can find detailed information on the CLI interface
from "Help/Technical Information".

Have you ever tried to play ogg files or connect to an ogg based radio
stream?

Sounds like you might have your slim server box set to wake on any
network traffic rather than just a WOL signal.
You're squeezebox continually polls your slim server machine (dont ask

the way it is)

Dont know what OS you are using though.. can we have more details?

Yeah, it works here.
But to be honest, I cannont tell you why that is.

Maybe you have some setting (plugins!!!) that recheck with the server
every so-and-so. I don't know, stupid RSS feeds or alikes.

Maybe you should reset the whole thing? Or try and disable most of the
plugins for a start at least.

Re: [slim] How does "new Music" update?

2007-03-18 Thread snarlydwarf

Autorescan has been around for ages.

I have it rescan every night at 3am or something. I do a full
wipe-scan then, just in case there were a lot of changed tags: it works
better to wipe first since that ensures old tags get deleted.

Of course, that means leaving the server on at odd hours, but mine does
more than slimserver these days so thats not a big deal.
