Re: [slim] Certain artists not appearing in Slimserver library with itunes...

2007-04-27 Thread Capricorn

I think I've got a similar problem (6.5.2 nightly build).

After a Rescan I'm missing 317 (!) Artists out of 951shown before in my
database. A Wipe and Rescan increased the number of artists up to 837.
Because of the still missing artists I rescanned again and got again a
number of 634 artists!

Only the album browse menu still shows: 695 discs with 8669 songs by
951 artists.

The result is disappointing: I'm no longer able to search for a huge
number of songs by artist.

And for sure: My harddisk of course contents these 951 artists by
minimum!

So I think, it's really a bug.

Re: [slim] Certain artists not appearing in Slimserver library with itunes...

2007-04-27 Thread Zach Anthony

After reading all the posts here, it would seem I have the same problem
too. I'm running 6.5.2 - 11708 on OSX 10.4.9.

Several artists just don't appear in the Artists list. However if I
search for a song name within one of the missing artist's albums, it
comes up OK, and even shows the correct artist name (in the song
title from album title by artist format). If I then click on the
artists name I get nothing though.

I've tried all the tag manipulation mentioned earlier in this thread,
no change.

Just having a look through my logs, found the following. Any use?

 the first time around!

Thanks, good to know. I see now that since it has to be smart about the
packets coming in over wireless, there's no reason why it should be
stupid about the ones coming from ethernet.

I moved my server from my wireless router to the SB last night, and
will run like this for two reasons:

1) The broadband connection in my apartment is placed in the bed room.
This means that my wireless router also sits there, and because of hard
drive noise I have been forced to power down my SlimServer at night.
Moving the server to my SB in the living room should allow it to run
24/7.

2) Once in a while the wireless strength has been too weak for the SB
to stream smoothly.

By the way, there's one little glitch in the network setup wizard on
the SB3 (firmware 72) that made me move the server back and forth a
couple of times. The option for enabling wireless bridging comes after
Connect to SlimServer, which means that there is no way to enable
bridging while the server is connected to the ethernet port. To make it
work, I had to move the server back to the wireless router and connect a
random computer to the ethernet port before I was able to turn bridging
on. Then I could remove the dummy computer, move the server to the SB
again, and continue my life. I would think this whole issue would
disappear if the bridging option was before Connect to SlimServer in
the network setup.

Re: [slim] Help: Windows - Delayed Write Failed

2007-04-27 Thread matthijskoopmans

This could be due to several reasons. The symptom is caused by Windows
not being able to access the drive.

1. USB connection failing: check cable, connectors on both the PCI card
and the enclosure, switch cables on drives, and connections etc, and see
if the error occurs on the same drive.
2. your PCI USB card is faulty: check the drive with another USB port
(not on the USB card)
3. The drive receives insufficient power: I assume these drives are
full size with external power supply. You will hear a distinctive
tick sound of the drive head hitting the drive when the power fails
temporarily (the actually damages the drive as well). If this occurs,
you need to find why the power to the drive is failing (is it in the
enclosure, or in the socket you plugged it into?)
4. PCI USB card driver is misbehaving (i.e. conflict with other
resources). Check for an updated driver from the manufacturer.

These are all the pointer I have for you now. Hopefully you will have
some success.

regards

Matt

Where do I check where I am doing the FLAC conversion ? I think it's all
being done at the Slim Server end but I could not see a setting in the
Slimserver software.

I've tried re-recording an LP and used FLAC Front End to do the WAV to
FLAC conversio - same result.

It's not white noise though - the row was so bad I thought it was at
first but I can just about make out some musical content - so it 's
just really, really gross distortion.

I've checked signal strength and tried different locations - varied
from 36% to 74%, not that it made any difference.

I thought SB3 was capable of 24/48 files - or is there just far more
difficulty in getting it to stream the larger files ?

???

To check you need to go into server settings and file formats. See
what's ticked for the FLAC format, for mine I have FLACWAV so the
decoding is done server-side but for some reason the server streams
pure white noise (no music I can hear) on 24/48.

But the SB can play 24/48 client-side with no trouble.

4-5 watts is the power that's continuously being used - there's no time

kilowatt hours - and your electricity bill will be measured that way
too.

So something running for 8 hours, drawing 4 watts (0.004 kilowatts),

Probably - but there's no time component here either ;-) Chances are

to wait a while before the electricity savings are greater than the

I think it depends on how many players you have. If you only have the
one player then you can just tick one box for each.

Assuming you want to stream WAV, then you can tick

MonkeyWAV, FLACWAV, MP3WAV, etc - and untick the other options, the
server will do all the hard work.

Otherwise, if you're happy for the SB to do the hard work with it's
inbuilt support you can leave the formats native, so

FLACFLAC, MP3MP3, and so on. Default is normally letting the SB do
the work.

At the risk of adding confusion :) if you have more than one player,
the format used depends on the bit-rate limiting you've applied to each
player.

So for me all my music is in FLAC, I have FLACWAV and FLACMP3 set.
My SB has no bit-rate limiting so it receives WAV, for when I use
Winamp on my laptop as a player I have bitrate set to 320 so the server
automatically feeds me MP3 @ 320.

Hrrm. I would tend to (especially since I have had my share of HDD

to recover from an error and stalling the USB interface. USB doesn't
have the same error reporting as ATA type drives so it may just be
oops, sorry, failed giving a generic error message.

Re: [slim] Go directly to Now Playing?

2007-04-27 Thread slimkid

Hi,

I would be veruy interested in the otcome of all this. This is a thing
that always bothered me. It just doesn't feel natural the way how it
works right now. To me, the best solution would be that as soon as the
play is pressed, 'now playing (with jump back)' screen is presented.
Actually, when you look carefully the screen, this is what happens for
a second, but then there's automatic jump back to the browse screen.
So, it might not require awfully lot of change.

I'm, wondering if there's a way to achieve that through the .map file
for IR. Is it possible to ahve two commands executed for one button
press. I tried a few combinations, but doesn't look like I have a right
delimiter

to slow down after a while. I'm not completely sure that the cause is
this extension but I haven't seen the problem previously. The slowdown
is solved in my setup by restarting Firefox.

Also another issue, the slimserver machine uses a lot of CPU when this
extension is installed. I suspect it maybe polls slimserver to check
the status a bit to often ?
I'm not sure how the extension works, but maybe it would be possible to
just issue a listen CLI command and then just wait for events when
something happens ?

The extension is still great, but I had to temporarily turn it off
until the above issues has been solved.

Thanks guys. I've removed the USB drive that has been getting the DWF
message and reconnected it through one of the v1.1 USB ports. That was

still connected to the v2.0 USB card and no problems with it.

Interestingly enough - it does click occasionally, which might be a
symptom of intermittent lack of power to the drive - which was
suggested. Given that enclosures are dirt cheap - I might buy another
one and see what happens.

Thanks very much for your help.

I had a similar problem with a Lacie BigDisk. Finally it just died and
turned out to be a bad disk controller.

I would (a) make a backup of the important data on the disk and (b) run
a SMART diagnostic tool to see if the Seagate disk reports any errors on
the actual hard drive. If not, it is probably the controller in the
enclosure.

THE DREADED CLICK OF DEATH!

Google this. You'll get some info about old Iomega ZIP drives, but
you'll also get some hits pertaining to hard drives. Your drive may be
on its way out.

Download a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring program and take a look at the drive.
Start moving data off it now, while you still can.

From what I understand, the drive is carrying out a thermal
recalibration cycle, which causes a click, as the drive tries to
correct itself.
