A factory reset? Unplug your SB3, press and hold ADD while powering up.
You'll have to reconfigure the device.

Other than that... did anything else change in your network? New devices?

As network storage(fileshares) and running slimserver goes, its really
no better or easier than a generic NAS or linux box. Where it really
shines is (1) remote access and (2) seamless backups for windows PCs in

I appreciate the suggestions, but I seem to have a sticky problem. Net:
these didn't fix the problem.

First, I added ALBUMARTIST tags to the files (note - the Slimserver
WIKI link to supported tags
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerSupportedTags) doesn't
indicate that SlimServer supports this tag) (sorry for the recursive
parens). I cleared/rescanned. Same problem.

Second, I added ARTISTSORT tags. Cleared, rescanned. Same problem.

I do store all album art as "folder.jpg" in each individual directory.

Any other ideas? It seems like somehow the ALBUM tag is getting higher
collation priority than ARTIST or ARTISTSORT.

I'm not using musicbrainz. And I can view the tags with either dbpa or
using Windows Vista properties - interestingly, while artwork is
embedded in addition to existing as folder.jpg, both are correct. It
seems like SlimServer is just giving highest sort priority to album
name.

thanks,
bmacnaughton

Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy

2007-06-21 Thread MelonMonkey

I never give only two cents...

Here's the perfect example. Apple.

Eye Candy, ease of use, and simplicity. Sonos has done well on these
fronts as well. I'm not saying both Apple and Sonos are not without
their faults of course (I previous mentioned some of Sonos').

The Slim products are great. But you have to be a gear head and pretty
serious music aficionado to install and maintain them. Use of a
Squeezebox has a low enough learning curve that you can teach most
people the basics in a few minutes from the remote.

I am the things I just mentioned, so it works for me. But I'm also
inherently a designer and artist (and engineer), so I also have a huge
appreciation for the finer points and refinements of products well
executed from top to bottom (or bottom to top if you work that way
around).

I would never advocate eye candy *instead* of usability. To me form and
function go hand in had. In my books, You really can't have one without
the other in product design.

Clearly the solution when you are in WiFi hell is to not use WiFi.
I run wired Ethernet, but I'm a geek.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that it would be cheaper for
SD/Logitech to just offer powerline adaptors as an option, rather than
integrating it for the small percentage of folks having problems. Mostly
because integrating one is not enough, you need one at the SqueezeBox
and one at the server.

I expect WiFi (at least in the B and G modes) is going to be less and
less attractive. The 2.4gHz band is getting crowded these days.

[slim] Novatech Powerline Adapters

2007-06-21 Thread UNCMo96

I'd been continually frustrated with my WiFi connection to my 2
squeezeboxes. They would routinely drop out and stutter and be slow.
Also synchronizing them seemed to send the whole thing down. I tried
all the tricks recommended here to no avail.

I finally plunked down some cash and got 3 Novatech powerline adapters
(about 35 bucks each) from newegg and they work like a charm. I'm
getting speeds of 45MBs and 17MBs on a "turbo" 85 MBS adapter. Probably
not fast enough for HD video streaming, but good enough for music. I
just hooked them up an hour ago. No stuttering, everything syncs well.

As so many folks have network problems, perhaps the answer is to
integrate powerline ethernet into the power cable for the squeezebox so
people can use that option?

Re: [slim] SB3 Wireless Connection Problem with Linksys WRT54G Router

2007-06-21 Thread Millwood

Just to remind you of the Linksys situation.

The initial linksys routers used linux as the underlying OS. They
eventually realized that the GPL required them to provide the source.
The result was the availability of third party firmware.

Recently, Linksys replaced linux with a proprietary embedded OS. They
managed to reduce the memory requirements and save some money in the
bargain. But in response to customer complaints, they decided to
continue the L series, which has extra memory, the Linux based
firmware, and costs a bit more.

[slim] All of a sudden: connectivity problems

2007-06-21 Thread Kyle

My SB3 is about 1 1/2 years old, and all of a sudden it is having real
problems connecting with first my network and then slimserver. I
thought it was a router issue so I got a new router (a Belkin N1 to
replace my Belkin Pre-N). Then I thought maybe the new router didn't
have as much range as the old one (I was getting 30-45% signal on the
old one, but it wasn't causing any problems). I bought Homeplugs, but
they didn't solve my problem. Then I moved the SB3 closer to my router
(about 20 feet and a room away), and it still won't connect every time.
Even if it gets into the network, which takes longer than it should, it
often can't connect to slimserver (75% signal). So now I'm thinking
it's a problem with the SB3. Any ideas?

Re: [slim] Music hangs - Firmware rollback? Slimserver rollback?

Same problem here, after updating slimserver and firmware earlier this
week.

The squeezebox drops out after 5-20 minutes (with slimserver 6.5.2 it
dropped out every 5 minutes or so). Reverting back to 6.5.1 has
prolonged the functional time, but is still a problem.

Reverting back to firmware 67 (or so) seems to be best solution, but

Good question. The nightlies cannot be used directly. The SS package
needs to be packaged with some changes in configuration to fit in the
n5200 module frame work. This is not very hard but is additional work
and required Linux knowledge. There is documentation of how to do this
in general in the Thecus Wiki. If you are a nighly junkie this takes a
bit more work but I think once you uinderstand and have set up the
module it can be done very quickly by recycling previous installation
module and just replacing modified items.

http://onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N5200_Module_Development

Currently, other than the module framework which Thecus has
implemented the work is done by users. Once the module is set up it is
a 5 minute at most exercise to load SS. Addition of plugins is done
thru SSH again a module you can install to gain a higher level of
access to the system.

Re: [slim] Switching from wireless to wired

2007-06-21 Thread kkitts

Hi Kyle,
Have you done any general trouble-shooting to make sure that you have
a valid network connection with the HomePlug devices in place?

I think that I might first make sure they are working right...

You might take a laptop and plug it into the same location that you
will be using the squeezebox at and make sure that it can get an IP
address when it starts up (if it is configured to use DHCP) - and that
you can "ping" another computer on your network.

you can type ipconfig at the DOS prompt to find your IP address, and
then repeat on another computer on your network - and then see if you
can ping to make sure that the basic network is in
place and working.

I've been thinking about using these HomePlug devices myself - my whole
house is wired except for 1 room - so I'd like to push my wired network
out just a little further... ;-)

Good Luck.

Kevin

I have had a CFL (not Canadian Football League) in my Family room longer
than the SB and never seen a problem. Must just be because it is under a
lamp shade. CFLs are great. Everyone should cut over to them as their
incandescents burn out. They last longer, consume quite a bit less
enrgy and now they even have the same, comforting hues of incandescents
and they turn on right away when you flick the switch. The mercury in
them is mice nuts compared to the benefits.

If it is a low budget off brand... then I would agree with the
statement. Name brands fair much better. I have had CFL in some
locations that have lasted 5+ years.

I would stay away from off brands: I bought a batch of off brand lights
and every single one failed in 6 months.

Also make sure you buy the correct color temperature 2500-3000K for the
incadescent light you are used too.

I thought I recalled Slim using the NEC protocol. But when I did some
quick searches as I was writing the post, I turned up only the older
JVC codes.

All is well then. All is as it should be with IR codes at least. :)

99.99% of all CFL bulbs sold here in Canada seem to be from China, so
even though it's easy to find a lot of "brands" one doesn't necessarily
know who's manufacturing them (or more importantly, their integrated
ballasts). I still suggest experimenting with different bulbs to get
around this problem. Lights with a standard base socket are easy to
find for no more than $2 each here in 15, 17, 22w, etc...

I had a severe problem with IR interference when I first installed CFLs.
But I discovered that the problem only occurs for the first few minutes

less IR. Now, I just make sure the lights are on for a few minutes

Right, forget slimserver. You dont need it for this, it's just
confusing matters. And forget about all this connecting to a http
://***.***.***/stream.mp3 business. You don't need to do this either.
It's not how UPNP works and it would be crap anyway as you would always
have to change the track/album via the server.

Assuming that you PDA connects to your PC via you network perfectly
fine (tested this?), you simply just need to have TVersity running.
TVersity will need pointing to you music folders like Slimserver does
to build a library and you will probably also need to setup up for fire
wall. In theory, TVersity should now be broadcasting on the network and
any UPNP clients should be able to automatically detect it and
connect.

Have you made sure you have conduits setup for UPNP? Download and
install the UPNP plugin from here -
http://www.conduits.com/products/player/plugins.asp

Now, if everything is working correctly and you have a connection to
your PC, you should just simply be able to go in
Browse->Network->select the UPNP server. Then you will see option for
Music, album, artist etc.

How open is the Thecus platform? You mention "version 2.00.01 of the
SS module". Does that mean Thecus or someone else is releasing regular
SlimServer packages that must to be installed to run SlimServer, or can
you keep SlimServer updated to the latest nightlies if you wish? What
about plugins?

2007-06-21 Thread seanadams

We only used JVC codes for the first few hundred units of our very first
product, SLIMP3, which initially shipped with a generic universal
remote.

All remotes that say Slim Devices or Logitech on them use a 32-bit NEC
codeset with our own manufacturer ID. The JVC codeset is supported not
so much for legacy compatibility, as just to offer an alternative code
set for use with preprogrammed remotes. It can be disabled in player
settings.

Re: [slim] Thecus N5200 - fastest NAS available

2007-06-21 Thread Pellicle

Just to update this thread on current status and my experience over the
last couple of months.

The n5200 has been performing very well since version 2.00.01 of the SS
module was installed. All functionality is present and performing
well.

Scanning, plugins (Time Date Weather, web interface, album art browsing
all work with no observed problems.

The responsiveness of both the web and SB interfaces is excellent
including browsing with album art.

Firmware updates continue to be regularly released by Thecus with a
major upgrade to version 2.00 in early beta. I have not looked at this
and currently have good results.

The issues of access to the system thru SSH have been resolved and in
fact there is a growing base of add in modules to enhance and customize
the capabilities of the N5200 including PERL and Ss modules.

Thecus is releasing the n5200 Pro with a upgrade to a 1.5MHz Pentium M
low voltage processor and other enhancements. I have no input on
whether any changes have been made which might cause issues with SS
installation.

Support from Thecus is not great, but the user forums are a good
support group and are active and helpful. However, there does seem to
be an effort to improve support from Thecus directly. I have not had a
need for direct support so this is from the pulse of the forum.

I agree with most of the above. I now replace 25W and 40W incandescents
with 40W and 60W equivalent CFLs in order to get the same lighting
effect. As to reliability, I've had no problems with the smaller bulbs,
but a number of failures with the 100-150W equivalents.

You obviously know more about this than I do, but the
Squeezebox/Transporter remote does have its own codeset. Slimserver
recognizes JVC DVD codes, too. You can use the Slimserver web interface
to disable acting on JVC DVD IR codes if you want. More info is
available in the Technical Information section of the Slimserver web
page, e.g.

"The mapping files, both .ir and .map, are stored in the IR subfolder
of the folder where the SlimServer software was installed. Included
with the software are two .ir files: jvc_dvd.ir and
Slim_Devices_Remote.ir which handle the codesets sent by the JVC DVD
player (which is the codeset most commonly used by the Slim Devices
player prior to the production of the Slim Devices specific remotes)
and the Slim Devices specific remote respectively."

Re: [slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox

2007-06-21 Thread MelonMonkey

Every fluorescent lamp puts out IR that will be received by all but the
most narrow band IR receivers. What happens at the device's end depends
on implementation details.

The reddish lenses found on IR products filter out specific frequency
ranges and in consumer electronics are usually provided so that
sunlight and most fluorescents don't cause excessive noise at the
receiver module. The modules themselves are also cast with colored
plastics to block out certain frequencies. You can get a ton of
information (if you care) from the various Siemens, Vishay (etc) data
sheets.

First suggestion is to buy a few more CF bulbs from different
manufacturers and at different outputs. You will probably find one that
doesn't cause a problem. In fact I'm almost sure of it.

A question for Sean or someone else at Slim... What IR receiver modules
were used in the SB2 and SB3? What frequencies should the exterior
lenses of the enclosures be filtering for each?

I have CF as the sole lighting source in my living room with the SB3
causing no problems at all.

I've done a lot of IR work over the past few years and tested countless
IR transmitting and receiving products. Numerous (mainstream) products
I've tested are completely unusable in my office test area. The SB3
works fine there.

Switching to a different remote would have no effect. The noise
produced by the light source would still corrupt the signal.

Unfortunately, the protocol being used by Slim (JVC) is basically one
that repeats a length sequence continuously during a repeat - fairly
easy to corrupt because there's a not-insignificant amount of data to
decode/match. If instead the product had used the NEC format it would
be a lot easier to keep repeats going and able to throw out
interference. Of course with a lot of noise being blasted at the same
time it would could still be difficult to decode the initial command
(but this might have alleviated Seans concern of dipping or mispointing
the remote in normal conditions).

I'm also surprised I haven't noticed more people complaining about
command collision with JVC DVD players. Unfortunately a number of
command codes overlap on device 239 (which Slim is using). Really, a
unique device number should have been selected to prevent collisions
with already established products.

Thank you for the in-depth explanation Sean. Proves once again how much
you guys at Slim Devices care for us customers.
I am using 4 bulbs of the type Megaman Compact 2000 MM325 (Manufacturer
Link:
http://www.megaman.de/megamanenergiesparlampen/roehrenform/compact2000/index.html
(German site)). AFAIK Megaman is a company based in Germany, so I don't
know if they even sell their CFLs outside of Germany. Over here they
have a very good reputation as a CFL manufacturer because they build
bulbs that are very compact, yet powerful and they have a very short
warm-up time. And apparently they sync very well with the SB Remote's
frequency :-)
Unfortunately they are also a bit on the pricey side. Each of the 4 23
watt bulbs costs about 30 bucks, thats why I am reluctant to throw them
out again.
I remember I used to have the same problem about a year ago when using
a Philips bulb, only back then I couldn't trace the cause of the
problem back to the bulb.

I noticed that the remote works fine if I shade the SB with my hand, so
I guess I have to place the SB somewhere else where it is covered of
come with a construction that covers it from the light.

Almost every product that features these abilities has them using the
same buttons. This is a very basic control implementation from a
usability perspective and something trivial from a timing/programming
perspective as well. It's not part of any problem.

The FFWD and REW are just awkward implementations. They work as
designed, but, like the original poster, I just wish they were designed
to operate in the expected/common/standard method.

I'm certain the server-based nature of the product may include some
latency, but I'd rather take my chances than be stuck with what exists
now.

Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy

2007-06-21 Thread MelonMonkey

The Sonos has a lot of things wrong with it, including the fact you MUST
connect the first player to your network BY WIRE. Only the second and
subsequent players can be used wirelessly. I'm sure most people don't
notice that little tidbit.

I've seen/touched the Sonos controller a number of times, including at
CES and Macworld in 2005 when they were launched. but I'm pretty sure
I'd seen them at a Macworld prior to that. A lot of people likely
imagine the controller to be iPod sized I suppose. It's definitely a
two hander or one hand and a table/lap to resting it on.

I just want to see options from Slim/Logitech. The polish is what sells
their products. I'd be surprised if they weren't outselling Slim
products at least 4 to 1.

I've evaluated all my options over the past few years. I wasn't an
early adopter of the Slim products because they weren't there yet. Last
year they reached, along with Slim Server, a level of maturity I felt
had reached the trigger point. At the same time, Roku that showed some
wow early on was all but dead and Sonos, despite its polish had the
unfortunate high price and some restrictions that didn't make me happy.
Its server solution was also far from ideal at the time.

In terms of low-level IP, Slim has what I consider the lion's share.
Logitech likely considered the same strengths when making their
acquisition. Now I'm very curious to see what will finally come to the
table. Logitech are not typically niche market players. At least not
esoteric niche markets.

There are so many possibilities and my curiosity has obviously got a
hold. Do I have to get a job at Logitech to find out what's going on?
:)

2007-06-21 Thread aubuti

Search the forums for "active speakers" and you'll find plenty of
options, ranging in price from $25 to $1000 or more. Without an idea of
your budget it's hard to recommend anything, but I will say that the
Audioengine 5 (~$300) and the Aego M (~$200) speakers routinely get
great reviews around here. At the low end, I have some Klipsch ProMedia
speakers in my kitchen that I got for around $40 on eBay. They're not
outstanding, but neither is the listening environment (running water,
range hood, etc.).

For your connection, your best bet is a simple Y-adapter cable that
runs from the two RCA outputs on the Slimp3 to the single mini-jack on
most active speakers.

The wifi bridge may work okay, but you might also consider using
Homeplug (ethernet over powerline) adapters to get the music to the
Slimp3. That way you can be 100% sure the Slimp3 won't drop out when
you turn on the microwave.

[slim] SLIMP3 direct into speakers advice?

2007-06-21 Thread jest

I have Squeezebox v.3 hooked into my stereo the usual way. It occurred
to me to take my original old SLIMP3 (original Sony remote, too!) and
set it up in the kitchen, on top of the cabinets, to get some music
there, with a separate WiFi bridge plugged into it so I don't need to
string Ethernet cables up the cabinets.

I don't need a separate poweramp and preamp for this, I'm happy just to
use the player's volume control. Can someone recommend a set of powered
speakers that will sound reasonably decent, that I can plug directly
into this? There's no headphone out, and I'm not if you need to do
anything special to run this directly into speakers.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Adding Favorites from Slim Server

2007-06-21 Thread Michael Herger
Hi Pete

Did only see this posting now in the devs forum. I'm answering here
because it's not really a development question.

> One thing I have not been able to figure out how to do from Slim Server
> is to add an Internet Radio station to my Favorites.

Unfortunately the Favorites plugin in it's current (6.5.x) implementation
doesn't allow adding favorites through the web interface. Your best bet
might be using the MyPicks plugin, by which the future Favorites plugin
(SlimServer 7) will be inspired. It's available from the wiki:

Documentation: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?WikiRadio
MyPicks plugin:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/plugin/attachments/WikiRadio/MyPicks-0.6-6.5.zip

The plugin will then be available from the plugin's section in the
slimserver we interface.

> Fortunately, the Slim Server software is readily accessible with my PC
> screen reader and I can perform most functions from the PC.

May I ask you which skin you are using? Does your screenread interpret
what is displayed on screen, or is it "reading" the html code, too?

I'm asking this as more and more of the skin's code is being created on
the client side (using javascript). I'd be interested to know whether this
makes working with a screenreader harder. (Now... that part would have
been appropriate for the developers forum :-))

Re: [slim] slim.exe has encountered a problem...

2007-06-21 Thread bpa

It would help if you provided more details to see what is common.
Details such as

1. Which version of SS - if it is 6.5.3 which build ?
2. What version of Windows ?
3. Are you running any security s/w such as Norton, Zonealarm, MacAfee
?

If you log a bug then support will look at the issue.

Re: [slim] Announcement: a new PSP skin

2007-06-21 Thread pfd

thanks for updating the wiki Tim, i didn't think it was obvious if you
didn't know where to put it.

i think the skin is great on my psp and runs pretty fast once you have
downloaded the icons. do you think there is any way one could store the
album art on the psp so it doesn't have to fetch it each time? it looks
really cool if you scroll through the covers but takes ages to load up
which sort of ruins the effect a bit.

Re: [slim] SS 6.5.2 - Missing Albums under Artist

This sounds very much like Slimserver is getting confused and thinks
both albums are part of the same single album. However, AFAIK the
behaviour you are describing shouldn't happen if both albums are in
entirely separate folders. I'm assuming you've checked all the tags in
DBP, it might also be worth trying something like Foobar just to check
that nothing's crept in that you're not aware of? Also, you're not
using MusicBrainz tags are you?

A quick fix to the ARTIST problem might be to add ALBUMARTIST and
ARTISTSORT tags to each file (The Beatles for one, and The Replacements
for the other). When you do a clear and rescan, that should solve the
issue of them not appearing under the correct artist.

The album art issue is a bit more tricky. How are you storing the
album art at the moment? If you embed your album art, I would try
removing this for these two albums, and then adding two separate
folder.jpg's into each folder, then do a full clear and rescan? I
should also mention I once needed to blow the entire cache away to get
rid of historic album art that was incorrectly showing up (although not
since 6.5.2).

Re: [slim] SS 6.5.2 - Missing Albums under Artist

2007-06-21 Thread Cessquill

Having the same problem here on a Windows box, 6.5.2. Don't use iTunes.
Noticed it last night when I couldn't find all my Tom Waits stuff.
Present on the Album listing, but clicking through on the artists
revealed an empty catalogue.

Will try the latest nightly...
