The transporter doesn't even have a SlimDevices logo, just
"transporter". Apparently it didn't look right with both when they were
designing it. The transporter does have a Logitech logo on the produc
information sticker on the bttom though.

The latest SlimServer release, 6.5.3, has been posted on the usual

Infrant has been notified, and a version for their box will be
available within a week or two.

This is a bug-fix release, with a total of 40 bugs fixed. 6.5.3 is part
of an effort to make regular releases a little more often.

Some highlights of the fixes include:

1604: Problems with “Guess Tags” from WAV filenames
3410: Intermittent perl58.dll error message during Windows install
4254: Possibly the last fix for Windows Vista installation
4544: Keep gaps between tracks without truncating songs
4979: Fix 6.5.2 bug with albums disappearing when search by artist

Re: [slim] More problems with Vista

2007-07-11 Thread nieldm

Guys thanks again for the responses. OK, I deleted everything including
stuff from the hidden ProgramData directory and rebooted. Unfortunately
the setup just hangs at, seemingly, the very end and the only way to get
out of it is to terminate it. I can see that it has inserted Slimserver
into Windows Firewall but it hasn't tried to start Slimserver.

Despite having rebooted, in Task Manager I do see two "slim.exe"
entries (one for user Marc and one for SYSTEM) and a
SlimServer_6_5_v2007-07-10.exe entry. In services slimsvc is 'Starting'
and SlimServerMySQL is running.

Stop Press. After stopping the process slim.exe running under 'Marc'
the setup completed. However slimsvc is stuck in 'Starting" and whilst
the tray icon says it is connected, when I try to stop it, it tells me
it is stopping it but it doesn't shut down.

I don't want you guys to spend days responding to my posts, but any
further advice before I try a XP machine would be great, if there is
any to give. Just fyi I have already had SlimServer running on my
Powerbook with no problem at all, but I want it to run on my
desktop

Thanks again
Marc

If you are comped you haven't paid for it.

I agree that it seems like a mismanaged change... but at least they are
being honest enough to comp you for having to endure commercials.

Though, again, whoever was behind the changes needs to be smacked for
misplanning things and apparently not having an "oh crap, we are
screwed, revert!" plan.

Don't forget that the high density corrugated shipping module now has
the Logitech logo on it. I've 'read that the new ink used in this
process traps electrons'
instead of letting them jar loose during shipping, which means it will
take a longer burn-in time.

If you have the original box, I am sure that Slim-labelled SB is worth
$2k easy.

I understand that the Squeezebox is (and will remain) Logitech branded
and the Transporter will remain Slimdevices branded, reason being their
target markets are different and Logitech is not known as an audio co.
whereas Slimdevices has an established, credible brand in the audio

Do you have and shortcuts or corrupted files in your library? Also
another way to figure out why the scanner is crashing is to try the
bubble sort method. Split your library up into 4 different folders and
scan each folder individually. When you find the folder that crashes
the scan, repeat the same process again until you can narrow it down to
one file or multiple files.

Do you have iTunes installed on the Buffalo or is just your iTunes
folder on the buffalo? Have you gone to Server Settings-->change top
pull down to iTunes and then specified where you itunes folder is? It
is always best to use a UNC path or the path that you have for #2.

I believe the MAC address on the SBs is held in firmware, as there has
been a long-standing bug of the MAC address changing and screwing up
communication with the device. So it may be possible, but someone
would have to go to the trouble of explicitly doing this. I think you
just got another bum Squeezebox.

"http://127.0.0.1:8000";. The shoutcast seems to hear it but immediatly
closes. The shoutcast server monitor returns the log below

To make sure the default install is deleted from Vista:

Uninstall, then:

Open Vista Exporer, go to Organise, Folder and Search Options, View

Then ensure you delete:
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\
C:\ProgramData\SlimServer
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\SlimServer

Reboot and try reinstalling.

There's always the possibility that you got two bad Squeezeboxes. Any
chance the replacement SB3 is the same unit that you returned?

If you can run it next to good SBs and the others don't display this
behavior, then I'm not sure what other conclusion you can come to.

It sounds to me like you have so much interference from your cameras and
neighbors' networks that wired is the most sensible way for you to go. I
haven't used homeplugs, but the reviews are generally very good, and
infinitely easier than pulling cat5 (unless you happen to have the

the one that resets is actually two squeezeboxes. One, that I bought,
and then returned for a second one in an exchange, that does the same
thing. In other words, the replacement does the same thing, reverts to
setup screen every couple of days.

I put the original bad squeezebox in a different room right next to a
good working squeezebox on the same power strip and swapped power
supplies. same problem.

the bad squeezebox is black. my two others with no problems are
white.

has anyone else had this problem with the black version of the
squeezebox?

thanks for the input.

Anyone have experience with homeplug? Is it ready for primetime?

I was on the default channel six on my wifi network and then switched
to channel eleven. same problem.

so I have tried different channels, different locations, static ip
address, turned off broadcasting cameras, all to no effect.

is there are other possibility other than hard wiring the squeezebox?

Re: [slim] Cloning Slim Server Config

2007-07-11 Thread aubuti

I think that slimserver.pref is all you need. But you should note that
some of the settings such as screensavers, menu customizations, etc.
are player-specific. And if I remember correctly, the players are
identified in slimserver.pref by their MAC (ie, hardware) addresses,
which will of course be different on your friend's SB. My guess is that
slimserver will just ignore those player settings, at least until the
day when you bring your SB(s) over and connect them to your friend's
network.

If you have some favorite plugins, you should copy those over as well.
They are all in the plugins directory (and sub-directories).

Re: [slim] New (Logitech) Squeezebox

2007-07-11 Thread tyler_durden

I'm sure that even if there have been no changes, someone, somewhere
will claim they hear a difference and it will create a special, high
priced market for original Slimdevices units on ebay.

Aren't there any more important things to worry about in the world?

I guess I sent a cancelation notice, and that seemed to make them
interested enough to send me an URL for the one stream I'm most often

Re: [slim] iTunes Plus ?

2007-07-11 Thread Loki

Thanks for the replies. This is great news. I thought I would check in
here with you folks before making my next purchase

I have also noted that iT+ has a feature to upgrade your existing
library. I only have a couple of albums so may give that a whirl.

Re: [slim] basic multi-room audio questions

2007-07-11 Thread jeffmeh

If the amplifier terminals make it difficult to connect more than one
wire to each, you can always attach one set of speaker wires to the amp
and splice in another along the run. Four wire nuts would allow you to
effectively make "Y" connectors for two speakers. You may not get it
past the audiophile inspector, but it will work, lol.

Hi!

Does anyone know if there is any change in the hardware of the
squeezebox 3 since they got logitech-branded?

I hope the logitech-branded one sound as good as the original slim
devices did... :)

Re: [slim] Two SB3s, very different wireless "rates"?

2007-07-11 Thread jeffmeh

It is unlikely that one SB is negatively affecting the wireless
reception of another.

It is much more likely that your wireless cameras/neighbors' networks
are interfering with your wireless signals.

You may wish to try it with the cameras off, and see if that solves
your problem. With the cameras off, try changing the network channel
to better avoid the neighbors.

2.4GHz wireless is susceptible to interference from cordless phones,
microwave ovens, etc. With some experimenting, you probably will be
able to get it to work well. If not, you may wish to consider a
homeplug device.

Also, have you tried swapping the locations of the SB that resets and
one that does not, to try to determine whether it is location or device
dependent? Any chance that the one that resets is losing power?

Thanks Jim, I need to make a call to Philips. I wonder why they try to
bluff you into thinking that you've only got a 1 yr warranty when this
European directive exists.

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 Skin

2007-07-11 Thread oreillymj

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it
- Need it
- Forget it

About 15mins after my post, I finally got the update to work, but it was
through trial and error. The timing has to be fairly perfect for the
update to work.

I understand that flashing the device is risky, but an update from
utility that loads an image from the SD card would be a good option for
both Windows users and greatly simplify the life of Linux users.

The PSP's update method works really well.

Re: [slim] Problems with SlimServer 6.5.2

2007-07-11 Thread Siduhe

You mention you are having a problem browsing for new music by artist -
is your new music there if you search by album, or for New Music?

If so, there is a bug in 6.5.2 which causes songs not to show up under
ARTIST if there is an identical COMPOSER tag in the same file. You
don't mention what types of files you are using, but do they support
COMPOSER tags? Things like Itunes and MusicBrainz will add these
without you necessarily being aware of them.

2 solutions:

Upgrade to 6.5.3 - this problem is fixed. 6.5.3 contains small, safe
bug fixes and is working fine for many people, including me.

Delete the COMPOSER tags in the offending files and do a full clear and
rescan.

The other thing you're seeing is the new Unplug and Play functionality
in Slimserver. Slimserver should "see" anything on the network which
acts as an UPnP server. However, this functionality is limited to
Rhapsody at the moment, so far as I am aware. Nothing to be worried
about, just ignore it.

See this thread for example
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=206165&highlight=upnp#post206165.
I'm not sure if Andy has yet come up with a way to turn the UPnP
functionality off.

Tried a couple of tacks yesterday and they work fine on the Squeezebox.
I'm playing them from iTunes (latest version) on a Mac Mini running OSX
and SlimServer on the same box just in case that helps.

Re: [slim] More problems with Vista

2007-07-11 Thread bpa

You could try to start with --d_startup, --d_server and --d_plugins.
The additional message may show if startup is somehow different on your
system.

Before doing this I think you should uninstall Slimserver and delete
ALL directories created for this and previous slimserver installations.
Especially make sure the pref file and cache directories. Also delete
any slimserver entries in the security s/w relating such as ports and
slim.exe.

Then install slimserver 6.5.3 in default directory and then add if
necessary port opening and slim.exe to security.

Re: [slim] Slimserver UI wont come up

2007-07-11 Thread ceejay

A couple of other thoughts ... slimserver is obviously running if you
can play music from your PC with the SB ... [note - you are sure its
from the PC, and you're not connected to SqueezeNetwork??]

So the problem is with the browser not being able to connect to
slimserver. I gather your server IP address (as discovered with
ipconfig) is something like 192.168.0.101, and the SB is similar but
...100

You've tried pointing the browser at http://localhost:9000 and
http://192.168.0.101:9000 ?

Also try http://192.168.0.101:9000/default [this will force SS to use
the default skin, in case you've accidentally switched it to something
else].

Also try clearing the cache in the browser (what browser are you
using?).

If none of this helps its back to looking at the Norton software,
although that shouldn't interfere with access on a lcoal machine...
