About 15mins after my post, I finally got the update to work, but it was through trial and error. The timing has to be fairly perfect for the update to work. I understand that flashing the device is risky, but an update from utility that loads an image from the SD card would be a good option for both Windows users and greatly simplify the life of Linux users.
