Re: [slim] More problems with Vista

2007-07-15 Thread Hercules

I had a similar problem with Zone Alarm on Vista, and fixed it by just
uninstalling Zone Alarm.

I was running SlimServer perfectly for a few months on Vista with the
default Vista firewall.

Then (yesterday) I installed the new Vista version of Zone Alarm, and I
then couldn't get SlimServer to work.

I imagine that it may have been possible to fix it with some jiggling
of zones, etc. but I decided just to uninstall Zone Alarm, and
SlimServer started working again.

Re: [slim] New folder/files

JJZolx;214343 Wrote:
I can't think why the scanner run from the command line would be any
faster than launching it from within SlimServer using the web

True. Although for some reason it feels quicker! In my case (about
8000 tracks) a full scan /wipe takes about 15 mins and a rescan about 2
(and yes I did check, it is of course the same from the web interface or
the command line).

However, if you are doing a rescan from the command line then you have
the option of pointing the scanner JUST at the directory you've just
added - it will scan just that directory and add the tracks. The time
is nothing like proportional, but still well worth having - a quick
test just now for a single added album (12 tracks) took 30 seconds to
add.

-- full wipe and rescan = 15 mins
-- full look for changed music = 2 mins
-- look for changed music in one album = 0.5 mins

All figures strictly for my library/server, of course...

In association with Zenon-Media and the Fraunhofer Institute of
Erlangen, French Broadcaster Radio Classique has launched at NAB 2007
in Las Vegas a streamed surround 5.1 Webradio.

Stream URL == http://str2.creacast.com:86/

I tried this out. Although I can playback the stream through my surround sound
amp via the SqueezeBox, it's only playing back in stereo. Is this expected? I
guess either SlimServer does some processing on the stream, or the surround amp
doesn't understand the format.

I get this same behavior. The current song ends, but the next one does
not play.

Wireless signal strength seems fine.

It can happen when I'm home alone, so I know it is not caused by
something that someone else in the house is doing.

My nearest neighbor is at least 200 feet away. It seems unlikely
anything coming from that house (cordless phone, garage door opener,
etc) would be causing this to occur.

This has occured with a each of the more recent nightly updates I have

Anyone have any ideas?

[slim] Upgrade advice - keeping all current settings

2007-07-15 Thread gutted

I'm currently running 6.3.1, and am going to try 6.5.3 since I've heard
several good things about it. I don't actually have all that many
problems with 6.3.1, though there are a couple of things that I'd like
to see resolved hence going for the newer version.

Last time I upgraded (I tried 6.5.1, I think) I was forced to downgrade
due to almost all tracks cutting-off a few seconds before the end. I
think maybe the problem might have been affected by the hardware; since
I've recently gone for SB3 (from SB1) I'm hoping I'll fare a bit better
with 6.5.x

But I digress. I've always found it a fair bit of hassle to upgrade
slimserver what with the various plugins and stuff that I have to
upgrade at the same time. This time I'm thinking of soething a bit
more drastic... Uninstall 6.3.1, delete the slimserver folder, then
install 6.5.3. Problem is this would wipe out all my settings (I
guess). Is there a file or 3 that I could save then restore after
upgrade to ensure I keep all my settings? Or is that a
different/better way to upgrade from 6.3.1 to 6.5.3?

Any advice appreciated - many thanks!
Dan.

EDIT: I just noticed that my sig sstill says 6.5.1. That's incorrect.
I upgraded for a very short time, but reverted back again for reasons
mentioned above. That probably means that the plugin versions are also
incorrect. Probably best to ignore the first line of my sig :)

I think that everything you need is in slimserver.pref, plus the plugins
in your Plugins directory. The location of slimserver.pref seems to vary
across Windows version. In XP the default is c:\program
files\slimserver\server\slimserver.pref. Of course, even when doing an
upgrade over top of an existing version it's a good idea to backup this
file. The plugins are in c:\program files\slimserver\server\plugins.

Nice one - thanks dude. I'll probably have to can my plugins anyway: I
upgraded them when I tried 6.5.1, but not sure whether I put them back
or not (AlienBBC currently not working, so need to reinstall the
correct version for example).

It's more the preferences that I'm concerned about, and looks like
you've covered those in your post above :) Anything else I need to be
wary of? I'm probably going to start out by simply renaming the
original folder so I can restore any files as I need - but if any
pitfalls I should be cautious of when moving from 6.3.1 to 6.5.3, would
be grateful for a heads-up.

Thanks for your post though - looks like the prefs file is the one I
needed to know about.

Dan.

[slim] Album Art acting weird!

2007-07-15 Thread david68

Hi, not a huge problem but an annoyance

I have SS set to display album art when I click on albums and
everything displays correctly with the exception of one album. Even
after doing a clear library and rescan everything the picture
displayed is for another of my albums. In other words that picture is
displayed twice - correctly against the album it relates to and
incorrectly against the album in question. However, if I click on the
album to move to the page where the individual tracks are listed then
the correct art shows!

I don't know if it's coincidence but the two alums in question are
next to each other, alphabetically, in my PC's music folder.

Any ideas how to get the correct art to display in album view?

I created a 5.1 wav file through a painful laborious process - and

5.1 channels because I can verify that on my yamaha receiver. So
squeezebox *can* play back 5.1 files of some varieties - is that right?

Also, the SB is only a 2-channel device, in order to do something like
this we'd need a Dolby Digital encoder to send 5.1 on the digital out?!

[slim] Missing first few seconds of sequential streams

2007-07-15 Thread Paul Webster

While waiting to see if RadioTime would support my request for On Demand
being usable by SlimServer
I decided to put one for Car Talk into WikiRadio.
However, this then highlights a problem.
The link is to a .smil file that contains a number of segments of the
show. When played on a PC using whatever it defaulted to (can't
remember what it was) ... it worked fine. However, when playing it back
through SlimServer (and I guess mplayer) it loses the first few seconds
of each segment.
My guess is that people tend not to notice this when playing a regular
internet stream because once it starts it just keeps running. But when
a show is in segments and tend to follow a defined pattern (a new
caller starts a new segment and almost always introduce themselves ...
and you miss it via Slimserver) then it is more obvious.

(running 6.5.3 from release day)

I haven't yet checked to see if this is a known problem - but I will
search now. I thought that you might like to know that Car Talk is now
available on WikiRadio first (they changed their URL syntax a while ago
- so that it no longer changes from week to week so is now much more
maintainable - i.e. doesn't need to be edited once a week).

bpa, I did try re-installing zone alarm on top of the working install
with the minimum options available. As soon as the re-boot after
install was completed I was back into the problem of slimserver stuck
in a starting state.

To be honest with you I do not have enough patience to try and track
down what is causing the problem between the two applications. All I
know is that uninstalling ZA caused SS to work again following a
re-boot.

I am glad to find that I am not alone in having this conflict. It
suggests that there is a genuine issue between the two and not a
problem unique to my setup. If someone works out a way to resolve the
conflict then I will happily start using ZA again. In the meantime I
would be interested to hear from anyone that has got SS working with a
third party firewall. Or are all Vista based SS users using the Vista
firewall?

No it just doesn't want to work. First couple of presses work then it
just stops. It doesn't update or anything.

It also struggles to detect players, currently slimserver is streaming
to 2 players and the plugin isn't findng any players.

Can you please try to download it again?
If you do, you'll get version 1.2 which fixes some serious bugs, it's
possible you have a large playlist which would have caused issues for
my first release. Even 40~50 tracks might have caused an issue before.

[slim] Still possible to buy SlimDevices (not Logitech) SB3 in UK?

2007-07-15 Thread flashgordon

I don't really want a Logitech logo on my SB3 (Logitech make cheapo PC
speakers don't they?). Anyone know if I can still buy a new
SlimDevices-branded SB3 in the UK? I realise I may end up with the old
remote control though. Is the new one so much better?

Many thanks,
Flash

I was able to solve the problem by creating a user account for the
slimserver service. This allowed slimserver to recognize the
\\server\k\_audio path pointing to my library.

 I appreciate the quick response.

 Curt

Hi!
Can you please describe how to do that?

Re: [slim] New - Google Desktop Gadget for Slimserver

2007-07-15 Thread venus light

very cool.

Unfortunately, I can't get it to connect to my SlimServer. I put in
the address in the options (192.168.1.101). I am trying to connect
from a different pc on the network if that makes any difference.

Also, I am unable to enter anything into the Player Name space.

Any ideas?

Re: [slim] New - Google Desktop Gadget for Slimserver

2007-07-15 Thread Wirrunna

I just loaded this gadget onto a different PC than my SlimServer, after
right clicking on the gadget, I entered the SlimServer Host name rather
than the address. The gadget found the host and entered the Player name
itself. The only problem is it doesn't update - it found the first
track in a playlist, now it has found the ninth track. Alerts are
enabled, auto refresh is ticked, 10 seconds, notification is also
ticked.

Way cool if it works !

[slim] Squeezebox and Windows Home Server

2007-07-15 Thread johnfeil

I am looking to use a squeezebox to access music stored on a shared
directory on a windows home server based network. The music library
was established through itunes and the itunes clients on my PCs can see
the networked music but if the squeezebox requires special software on
the PC where the music resides this may be an issue. also, most PCs are
now running Vista. Can anyone tell me if there are likely to be problems
doing this.

On your server, Windows Explorer, highlight My Computer, right click and
select Properties, then the Computer Name tab.

Re: [slim] Missing first few seconds of sequential streams

2007-07-15 Thread Paul Webster

... later ...
the version I was running is the one that AlienBBC provides - but I did
find that there is a more recent version over on mplayerhq - so I am now
running 1.0rc1-3.4.2 and am hitting the same problem.

I guess this means that I have to report it to mplayer itself - but
could someone else confirm the problem first?

From Squeezebox (with AlienBBC/mplayer installed)
Internet Radio/Wiki Radio/Car Talk/Car Talk play
at the end of segment one you should hear the next caller introduce
themselves ... I do from PC ... but not from Squeezebox.
