Re: [slim] Browse Years

2007-07-17 Thread erland

1. Is all your music stored somewhere below: F:\My Music ?
If setup like you have done, SlimServer will only detect music that is
either:
- Found below F:\My Music
- Part of a playlist

2. Is it just the Browse by Year that doesn't work or do you have the
same problem with Browse by Genres and Browse by Artist ?

3. When you perform a rescan in SlimServer it is possible to select
tree different options:
- Clear library and rescan everything
- Look for new and changed music
- Only rescan playlists
The latter two can cause problems if your timestamps in the music files
aren't updated correctly. So to be completely sure, unless you have
already done so, I would perform a rescan with Clear library and
rescan everything

Re: [slim] Still possible to buy SlimDevices (not Logitech) SB3 in UK?

2007-07-17 Thread menno

FYI I bought two SB3s from Ebuyer, which although showed Slim Devices
logos on the site, actually had Logitech logos on them when I received
them.

But I had to RMA one of them as the remote did not work, and they then
ran out of stock, so just refunded me.

I then bought a replacement (and an additional one, as I liked the SB3
so much) from datakits.co.uk. Both those had the old style logo!

Interestingly they are the cheapest place to buy at the moment. And I
tried to get another firm who I had used before to price match, and
they wouldn't price match; was given some line about how the supplier
said Datakits had no stock and are trying to disrupt the the online UK
market.

Very odd. But I had no probs, the Datakits order came on time, with two
SB3s with nice old style logos.

Cheers,
Menno

This looks like a great addition - all works fine for me so far except:
I can't increase the size of the gadget! Okay - I've only just
installed Google Desktop so I may be doing something foolish, but all
other gadgets can be increased in size by dragging - on the Slim gadget
dragging at the bottom of the window increases the size of the gadget
above! I've moved it to the top, the bottom, all different locations
within the sidebar - same effect. Trouble is, I can barely see what's
on the display unless I increase the whole sidebar to around 20% of the
screen width.

[slim] Play other songs in album problem

2007-07-17 Thread markwm

On my SB3 itself, if I do the following:

Browe Albums Album Title Play track 5 out of 12

Track 5 will start playing and then after it's finished songs 6--12
will play, perfect.

However, when doing the same via the slimserver web interface after
track 5 is finished, it just goes back and repeats itself.

Despite the preference being chosen in server settings behaviour.

What gives?

Don't really need plugin for this - search or browse artists select
play all songs for selected artist (w/ player in shuffle songs mode)

If you provide more details people may be able to try to reproduce the
problem. I found some small bugs (bug #5094 5103) in relation to
Pause near the end of track but they have been fixed in 6.5.3.

Information that would be useful:
- Slimserver version and build if a nightly build.
- format of the file being played
- what type of player ? wired/ wireless player ? wired or wireless
server ?
- specific details such as long/short playlist, long/short files, first
pause/ mulitple pauses, stop within x secs of end of track

[slim] Multi-format rips of same track

2007-07-17 Thread peted

Hi

I've a question about having both MP3 and FLAC files of each track
present in the same music folder. Can the server scanner be made to
pick up the high quality (FLAC) file if present (ignoring the MP3),
otherwise resort to the MP3? I run both because other users on our
network can only use MP3 with various other players. The bulk of our
collection is on MP3 at the moment but am re-ripping gradually to FLAC.
I assume both would have to be in the same directory with the same
filename (apart from the file extension).

A great product - running softsqueeze now - hope to get the real thing
soon...

Many thanks

No, SlimServer can't do this. It's been asked a few times. I think
you just need to be diligent in cleaning out the mp3 copy when you rip
a Flac version of the same album.

I would keep the Flac and mp3 libraries separate, which should make
this kind of maintenance a lot easier. Create an empty music folder
and point SlimServer at this folder. Within that music folder, create
a shortcut to the Flac library and one to the mp3 library.

Then let's get a few more details...

When you say the song will restart, is that a track in your local
collection, being sent by SlimServer or is it coming from outside your
local network (say, from an MP3tunes locker, Rhapsody, or some other
source)?

If it's a track in your local collection, something is either impacting
the connection between your SB3 and router/hub/swtich; or taking CPU
cycles from SlimServer. What format is the song you're playing? If it
isn't one the SB3 natively supports (details here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToFileFormat, then
it's being transcoded at the server side. If this is the case,
performance on the server machine may be causing the problem.

If it's a remote track, then the problem could be in a whole bunch of
places -- your connection, your ISP, one of the routers in the hops
between you and the the service you're using, or the service may bogged
down and not keeping up. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this one...
maybe someone else can chime in.

Actually those are not scratches. They are a normal artifact of the
injection molding process called knit lines and they the same on
every unit. It happens when the plastic has to flow around a feature of
the mold in order to form an aperture. When the material converges on
the other side of the hole, it forms a seam.

[slim] Squeezebox using as Alarm Clock

2007-07-17 Thread jordi . c

Hello,

At the moment I've a crappy radio alarm. I was looking for a nice
solution to wake up by my favorite music :).

The option of buying a Philips Ipod Dock is obsolete, because it has
not enough space and poor sound quality.

So I think the SqueezeBox will be perfect for this job.

In my bedroom I've a receiver with 5 satellite speakers (Sony)
connected.

The problem I'll get I think is that the receiver has to be the whole
night on with speaker volume on.

This is not very pleasant, because the speakers give some noise (not
much) when I turn the power volume high and no music is playing.

Is there a way or product that my Pioneer Receiver switches from
standby to On when the alarm starts or another workaround?

Best Wishes.
Jordi

Re: [slim] Squeezebox using as Alarm Clock

2007-07-17 Thread exile

i think the easy solution is to set up ir blaster with your system.
search the wiki or forums here for basic info and instructions.

i have it setup with my sb2 and my sony receiver and every morning my
player alarm triggers the receiver to turn on.

Hi Exile,

Can you give a little bit more information what you mean with blaster

Never mind -- apparently you have to separate the additional ports to
forward in the Softsqueeze window by commas. Then it works fine. Music
anywhere - awesome!

Thanks,

2007-07-17 Thread Mark Lanctot

You can get them directly from Logitech:

https://secure.slimdevices.com/order/upgrades.cgi

$7.00.

It uses the 'IRBlaster'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?IRBlaster) plugin. You need
either a file for your remote control from here:

http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/pioneer/

or you can generate your own from your own remote. Nearly all remotes
are compatible, but I can't say for certain whether yours is - there's
a very, very good chance as only unusual remotes using odd modulation
frequencies aren't supported.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox is acting up.

2007-07-17 Thread gdg

JimC;215238 Wrote:

 -= Jim

Hi Jim,
The track is in my iTunes library and stored in Apple Lossless Format.
I'm using Windows XP and when this happens I have nothing else running.
Strangely it's very intermittent and only happened once during each of
the last two 45 minute listening sessions.

[slim] I really like my Squeezebox, but...

2007-07-17 Thread OffBeatMammal

'MusicPal'
is an awesome idea.

I've got two squeezeboxes in the house (both connected to Logitech Z4
speakers. When are the new lords and masters actually going to come up
with an optimised speaker bundle for use at an intro level with the
squeezebox?!) and they work perfectly. I'm running the Slimserver on a
Windows Home Server with more music on than I can listen to in a week
(it's a consolidation of everything me, my wife and daughter own) as
well as having Pandora streaming through it.

But the other day we had friends over and wanted to sit on the deck and
listen to music from the system. So much moving of cables for the
squeezebox and speakers.

I'd love a WiFi Boombox that talks to the Slimserver as a fully
functional client, sounds good enough to use on the deck and can run
off the mains or (rechargable) batteries. Maybe include a USB or card
reader so I can plug in music on an iPod or a Zune if we're camping.

As time goes by there's going to be more and more competition (assuming
that SoundExchange don't kill the music) and more niche players...
Logitech/SlimDevices certainly have the smarts and the capability to
pull something like this off - shame MusicPal got their first.

Depressingly a lot of people I show my Squeezebox set up to end up
buying Sonos because of the all-in-one solution. MusicPal offers
another pretty good reason to love the concept and go elsewhere.

Me I'm sticking with the Slimserver for now... but need to find a
better way to get music on the deck ;)

[slim] SlimServer on a older G4 powermac

2007-07-17 Thread markwm

I've had enough of windows of my server. I detest it everytime something
goes wrong.

Thinking of getting a mac to use as my server. (I use macs mainly
anyway). Mac Mini's are too expensive, iMacs are overkill so I'm
thinking of picking up a used G4 powermac on ebay, something like a
400/500mhz.

Anyone running slim server with a similar spec powermac? how's it
perform?

Apple lossless is transcoded for playback on the SB3. I don't know a
lot about how this process works, so I've sent a note over the the tech
support group to solicit ideas for you.

I believe it uses Quicktime for the initial decode, and that was
recently updated... did you upgrade? Any chance the problem started
with the new version of QT?

I'll let you know what I learn from our tech support team.

Re: [slim] Multi-format rips of same track

2007-07-17 Thread peted

Hmm, pity. Your comments make good sense for easier maintenance though.
I wonder if what I'd like to achieve could be done using user specific
permission attributes on the MP3s to deny SlimServer read access on
these files. With the SS service started by a unique user (per what's
done on Windows for reading network folders). No good of course on
simple systems like XP Home Ed.

Many thanks

2007-07-17 Thread adamslim

Squeezebox, T-amp, SLA batteries, LS3/5as and lots of duct tape. You
have a SlimBoombox ;)

Seriously, I agree, but I think that Slim will be coming out with a
low-cost all-in-one soon. The architecture favours it (it's designed
that way!), so it's a matter of time. The only issue I can think of is
the possible revenue hit to the SB3 - only audiophiles would buy the SB3
for £200 when you can get a simpler (worse sound, crappy screen) version
with speakers for £150. Will this increase overall revenues?

I bought a refurbished Mini from Apple (1.8GHz Core Duo) and it's
AWESOME... only $600. You could probaly get a 400MHz G4 for $250-300
but then you'd porbably want to add a processor upgrade. (I have a
400MHz G4 but have put in a single 1.8GHz G4 upgrade into it... it also
works as a great server).

Re: [slim] SlimServer on a older G4 powermac

2007-07-17 Thread kkitts

I bought a mac mini off of craigslist - the prices seem to be a bit
better than eBay - though they vary more widely. I've seen several of
the older mac minis (G4) go for 3 or 4 hundred dollars on craigslist -
for a 1.25 Ghz machine! It is super quiet too. I think that a mac mini
would make an ideal slimserver box.

I've not used slimserver on the mac mini though - I'd already set up an
inexpensive Linux server before I got it...
