Both my examples are not supposed to be right according to your logic. First sentence uses genitive singular (which doesn't even exist in English), so 'forum' would become 'fore'. The second one would require use of acusative singular, so 'forus' would be the right word to use. Now, since nobody would ever use this in English language, I really don't see how use of 'fora', which is nominative plural all the sudden makes sense. And, just in case some doctor or lawyer comes after me for those suffixes, my Latin is 25 years old :). [slim] need for informative error messages
I discovered something interesting and frustrating at the same time: When I powered off my router, the squeezebox screen went blank. What I propose is that for all sorts of scenarios, the squeezebox should display informative error messages. E.g. in the example above, the squeezebox should display a message that says that it lost contact with the router. In other words, you should be able to see immediately that there is nothing wrong with the power supply or the screen or anything else in the squeezebox, just that it lost touch with the router. So then you have a better idea where to start your troubleshooting, in this example, look at your router and don't assume that there is anything wrong with the squeezebox. Or how about an error message that the squeezebox can communicate with the router but lost its local ip address. Or how about an error message that the wifi reception is not good enough (I know you can scroll through the menus to see your signal strength but a basic message if this becomes a problem should be right there in front of your eyes when your music stops). I am sure others can suggest other scenarios where error messages would be helpful to diagnose a problem. I know that software in general should have built in error messages to help diagnose problems and the squeezebox operating system or firmware should also have them. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37457 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox can't connect via WLAN
I agree with the above solution about power cycling. I just experienced the same discovery of this solution about a week ago. I had tried all types of trouble shooting to no avail. Finally I hit upon this solution. I have 3 squeezeboxes and a laptop. Once in a awhile the squeezeboxes will revert to the setup screen. I could not find my solution in the FAQ's, or the Wiki or the manual or talking to tech support or emailing tech support. Shame. I noticed something that got me thinking. When I powered off the router, the squeezebox screen went blank. Although I am not a techie, this behavior doesn't seem helpful (I am going to publish a separate thread on the need for informative error messages). Ok, this is what you do when you lose IP addresses. Power everything off. Then starting from the wall, power everything on one at a time, wait a few seconds before the next device. In my case, first I power on the linksys router, then the linksys switchbox, then the linksys access point, then one squeezebox, then another and then the last squeezebox. Then I power on the laptop. Since my laptop is constantly being powered on and off, I let the squeezeboxes get assigned their local ip addresses first since they are always on and thus need an assignment only once. Then after they work, I can power on my laptop. Since I discovered this solution which slim devices should publicize more widely, my problems seem to have been solved. By the way, my Dell laptop seems to have a more "robust" (whatever that means) radio than the squeezeboxes. The Dell seems to be able to hold onto its ip address better than the squeezeboxes. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37448 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Does't FF or REW With FLAC Files
Hi Ermine & Mark, File size is about 550MB. The behavior that you describe is the same as ours. You can use << or >> to backup or go forward between tracks, but not to advance or backup in an individual track. Most players have this latter capability, but Squeezebox apparently cannot do it, at least with FLAC encoding. It is an unfortunate limitation with large sized files (that is, tracks). It is not, however, an insurmountable problem because there are multiple ways of splitting long tracks into shorter segments. -- robbiex robbiex's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12693 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37446 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Squeezebox can't connect via WLAN
Hi, I have a Squeezebox v3 and I have a big problem - the problem shows up basically like this: 1) Can't obtain an IP-address 2) Can obtain an IP-address (although it takes a long time), but cannot connect to Slimserver 3) It can obtain an IP-address and connect to Slimserver - I can browse artists etc. but it dies when trying to play something When running on a wired connection, there is no problem (thus bypassing the access point). So it must be something with the WLAN connection. I have the latest firmware both on the SB and the access point. I have tried running Slimserver on two different computers (running XP Pro and XP Home), same problem. I reseted the SB, no difference. It used to work perfectly, I have no idea what have happened. My network setup is a Netgear RP114 router, and a Linksys WAP54G (using the RP114 as a DHCP, WPA Personal as the encryption method). Slimserver is running from a computer directly connected to the router. I can run other units like my Macbook without any problem on the WLAN. I would really appreciate any help! Re: [slim] Squeezebox Halts Playing Large File
Hi Sean, Thank you very much for the reply. The Squeezebox just displayed the message "Stop". No error messages were seen in the computer's event log at the time that the Squeezebox stopped playing the audio. Pressing Play on the Squeezebox resulted in the audio resuming from the start of the file. Ripped CD music and Internet streams play properly on the Squeezebox and the 550MB FLAC file that repeatedly stops at about 10 minutes into the recording plays properly with SoftSqueeze, VLC and Samplitude on the server. The audio file was originally recorded and edited using Samplitude and it is possible that there is something in the edited audio that results in the Squeezebox stop. There are no known problems with the hardwired Ethernet. It works properly with multiple other applications. Re: [slim] Access Point Recommendations?
Mark and Jim are correct in their respective assertions that most people use routers instead of access points as well as most routers can be used like an access point. In my setup at home I use an access point. I already had an 8 port switch and have a dsl router. I felt an additional router would be redundant. I have a Linksys WAP54G and it works great. For my parents, I picked up a WRT54G. They didn't have an ethernet switch, so this killed two birds with one stone. To avoid the router functionality (they have the same dsl setup as me) all I did was plug their computer and dsl router into the switch ports and leave the WAN port open. Easy as pie and works great. At the time I bought my parents their router it was 28USD cheaper than the access point, and Sprawl Mart had the router in stock. If I had to do it again I would've bought the router. [slim] Can't start Slimserver service. Could it be MusicIP?
Hi all, I've been trying to set up MusicIP for a while now. It's finally finished analyzing all of my songs (took a couple of weeks, due to slow machine and big collection). So, I started the headless server (./MusicMagicServer start) on my server. Then I started SlimServer service. Then I enabled MusicMagic in the web UI for slimserver and removed the Music Location field (as it says on the interface). Then I did a complete rescan. Success! I now have the coverted 'm' on all of my tracks and I spend a happy evening creating mixes using MusicMagic - Great!! Then slimserver hung - I restarted the service, it started ok. Re: [slim] Slow Chirpy Sound
Have you tried running the SB3 in a wired configuration instead of wireless. This would rule out and wireless problems, which are of an order of magnitude more difficult to sort out than some other anomalies...I run my Squeezebox at about the same wireless signal strength as you, playing lossless files with no problems, just to give you an indication that signal strength alone is sometimes not a clear indicator of potential problems. Here's something to test. If a person stands in my kitchen blocking the line-of-site path between the wireless router in my office and my squeezebox, sometimes I experience what you describe... Try running the performance tests accessible through your Squeezebox remote - choose 'Plugins' then 'Network Test' (I'm running Slimserver 6.52 on XP and that's the menu path I use) ...they may also shed some light... Good luck. skipjames;219612 Wrote: > Apologies if this has been covered before, but i couldnt find anything > describing my situation. > > I just set up a new SB3. Re: [slim] squeezeslave backgrounding - patch

Well I for one use Squeezeslave all the time, it puts a much lighter load on my CPU than softsqueeze. I have the same problem with squeezeslave dying if not used, but to be honest it is not a show stopper for me, I simply kill it and restart it if needed. -- mattybain '[image: http://imagegen.last.fm/recenttracks3/recenttracks/MattyBain.gif]' (http://www.last.fm/user/MattyBain/?chartstyle=recenttracks3) mattybain's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35403 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
