This is off topic, so I aplogize to everybody, but since asked - I'll
be brief. There's much more to Latin grammar than singular/plural. Both
my examples are not supposed to be right according to your logic. First
sentence uses genitive singular (which doesn't even exist in English),
so 'forum' would become 'fore'. The second one would require use of
acusative singular, so 'forus' would be the right word to use. Now,
since nobody would ever use this in English language, I really don't
see how use of 'fora', which is nominative plural all the sudden makes
sense. And, just in case some doctor or lawyer comes after me for those
suffixes, my Latin is 25 years old :).

[slim] need for informative error messages

2007-08-08 Thread mortslim

I discovered something interesting and frustrating at the same time:

When I powered off my router, the squeezebox screen went blank.

What I propose is that for all sorts of scenarios, the squeezebox
should display informative error messages. E.g. in the example above,
the squeezebox should display a message that says that it lost contact
with the router. In other words, you should be able to see immediately
that there is nothing wrong with the power supply or the screen or
anything else in the squeezebox, just that it lost touch with the
router. So then you have a better idea where to start your
troubleshooting, in this example, look at your router and don't assume
that there is anything wrong with the squeezebox.

Or how about an error message that the squeezebox can communicate with
the router but lost its local ip address.

Or how about an error message that the wifi reception is not good
enough (I know you can scroll through the menus to see your signal
strength but a basic message if this becomes a problem should be right
there in front of your eyes when your music stops).

I am sure others can suggest other scenarios where error messages would
be helpful to diagnose a problem.

I know that software in general should have built in error messages to
help diagnose problems and the squeezebox operating system or firmware
should also have them.

'Forums' and 'referendums' are both in every dictionary I could be bothered
to check as plural of 'forum' and 'referendum', along with 'fora' and
'referenda'. You are using false logic if you expect the rules of language

Re: [slim] Squeezebox can't connect via WLAN

2007-08-08 Thread mortslim

I agree with the above solution about power cycling.

I just experienced the same discovery of this solution about a week
ago. I had tried all types of trouble shooting to no avail. Finally I
hit upon this solution.

I have 3 squeezeboxes and a laptop. Once in a awhile the squeezeboxes
will revert to the setup screen. I could not find my solution in the
FAQ's, or the Wiki or the manual or talking to tech support or emailing
tech support. Shame.

I noticed something that got me thinking. When I powered off the
router, the squeezebox screen went blank. Although I am not a techie,
this behavior doesn't seem helpful (I am going to publish a separate
thread on the need for informative error messages).

Ok, this is what you do when you lose IP addresses. Power everything
off. Then starting from the wall, power everything on one at a time,
wait a few seconds before the next device.

In my case, first I power on the linksys router, then the linksys
switchbox, then the linksys access point, then one squeezebox, then
another and then the last squeezebox. Then I power on the laptop.
Since my laptop is constantly being powered on and off, I let the
squeezeboxes get assigned their local ip addresses first since they are
always on and thus need an assignment only once. Then after they work,
I can power on my laptop.

Since I discovered this solution which slim devices should publicize
more widely, my problems seem to have been solved.

By the way, my Dell laptop seems to have a more "robust" (whatever that
means) radio than the squeezeboxes. The Dell seems to be able to hold
onto its ip address better than the squeezeboxes.

No halts occurred with two loops through the 90 minute long stream so
hopefully the system is now functioning properly.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Does't FF or REW With FLAC Files

2007-08-08 Thread robbiex

Hi Ermine & Mark,

File size is about 550MB.
The behavior that you describe is the same as ours. You can use << or
>> to backup or go forward between tracks, but not to advance or backup
in an individual track. Most players have this latter capability, but
Squeezebox apparently cannot do it, at least with FLAC encoding.
It is an unfortunate limitation with large sized files (that is,
tracks). It is not, however, an insurmountable problem because there
are multiple ways of splitting long tracks into shorter segments.

As long as you turn off the wifi and aren't playing movies the battery
lasts plenty long. I wish it used one size bigger charger so I would
have a spare (or even better, would charge via USB), but other than
that, it is great.

Well, the 770 is end-of-life, the current prices are to clear out
warehouses (which is odd: since for a long time it was really hard to
get ahold of ... they never seemed to have any in stock).

It is not only a great remote for Slimserver, I carry it for an
emergency ssh host in case I need to log in to fix something at work.
Between the various free international Wifi providers, I should be able
to get online anywhere. ("Default", "Linksys" and "Buffalo" are all
great free wifi ISP's here :P)

Both are already correct. Both are singular, and forum is the correct
singular form. Or else I'm missing your point somehow.

If you're asking me how I say the plural of forum, I actually say
"fora", since I don't know how to pronounce "forae". I only took latin
for 1 year and it was 35 years ago. I've forgotten a thing or two.

But look at the top of this page. The header is

"Forums" is wrong. Sorry. No one says datums, as in "I got the newest
datums on sales of new products today". We say "I got the newest data".
So why do we say forums? Referendums?

How many other people do I hear saying "fora"? Admittedly, not many,
more's the pity. Worse, I hear people who are supposed to be our

the long buffer using slimserver's stream.mp3 is a bit of a usability
issue though.

If you want responsive streaming to your 770, install Canola and a UPnP
server on your PC. I think you'll find that a better solution for
streaming directly to the Nokia.

The power button got me until I read the docs...

You need to hold it on for a couple seconds for it to recognize it as a
button press instead of an oops.

Turning it off isn't as picky (sort of): a short button press brings up
the menu for various things (key/screen lock, PIN lock, Offline mode, or
really off) and a longer button press turns it off without the question.

I have played with it for a few days and I really, really like surfing

be able to use youtube but I knew it wasn't capable of that before I
bought it. Ben's skin is really slick and again, quicker than I
expected. I can't get the brouse album art to work. Any suggestions?

Has anyone had problems turning the N770 on? The power button doesn't
want to work sometimes. Is mine defective or is this the nature of the
beast? I suspect it's a software thing because I have never had trouble
turning it off.

Foobar plays the file with no errors.
FLAC FrontEnd "test" also reports no errors.
A portion of the SlimServer log is attached. I didn't include the whole

[slim] backing up slimserver settings

2007-08-08 Thread rout

I've customized my SlimServer settings fairly heavily.

I'm curious if there is a way to backup the custom settings so that I
could apply them to another installation on another computer in the
future.

Is there a config file or anything like that that could be backed up to
do this?

They're currently showing a stock of 50, and I have emailed the address
you've suggested (had done already, in fact), so let's see what happens
within the next day. Legally, and in accordance with their own site's
terms and conditions, I can cancel the order up to tomorrow afternoon
and demand a full refund.

I will keep you posted - given how few suppliers stock the Squeezebox
in the UK, it's important to ensure that potential buyers get good
standards of customer service.

Re: [slim] Still possible to buy SlimDevices (not Logitech) SB3 in UK?

2007-08-08 Thread jeebers

Hate to tell you this, but I had a bad experience with them.

I ordered a SB3 from them, they took my money and I got an email
telling me it had been despatched. This was inaccurate, as they didn't
have any in stock (the next day they were showing an instock figure of
-2) - they didn't answer the phone, reply to any emails etc etc,
despite a LOT of chasing from me.

I eventually got them to cancel the order after threatening to take
them to Trading Standards. Do a Google search on them and you'll find
plenty of similar stories.

I'll drop you a PM with the email address of someone who finally sorted
things out for me.

Have you tried powering EVERYTHING down, then bringing items back on
line in order? NetGear, LinkSys, PC then SB3?

I need to do this occasionally when I get the symptoms you describe -
my linksys router gets into a funky state and power cycling it seems to
clear it up.

Now if I could only get my LinkSys Wireless PrintServer to be as
reliable as the SB and Nokia770 then all would be well.

[slim] Squeezebox can't connect via WLAN

2007-08-08 Thread Jonasy

Hi,

I have a Squeezebox v3 and I have a big problem - the problem shows up
basically like this:

1) Can't obtain an IP-address

2) Can obtain an IP-address (although it takes a long time), but cannot
connect to Slimserver

3) It can obtain an IP-address and connect to Slimserver - I can browse
artists etc. but it dies when trying to play something

When running on a wired connection, there is no problem (thus bypassing
the access point). So it must be something with the WLAN connection.

I have the latest firmware both on the SB and the access point. I have
tried running Slimserver on two different computers (running XP Pro and
XP Home), same problem. I reseted the SB, no difference. It used to work
perfectly, I have no idea what have happened.

My network setup is a Netgear RP114 router, and a Linksys WAP54G (using
the RP114 as a DHCP, WPA Personal as the encryption method). Slimserver
is running from a computer directly connected to the router. I can run
other units like my Macbook without any problem on the WLAN.

I would really appreciate any help!

Best regards,
Jonas from Sweden

foobar will indicate when there's a stream error.

In SlimServer, go to Server Settings - Debugging - d_source. Play the

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Halts Playing Large File

2007-08-08 Thread robbiex

Hi Sean,
Thank you very much for the reply.
The Squeezebox just displayed the message "Stop".
No error messages were seen in the computer's event log at the time
that the Squeezebox stopped playing the audio. Pressing Play on the
Squeezebox resulted in the audio resuming from the start of the file.
Ripped CD music and Internet streams play properly on the Squeezebox
and the 550MB FLAC file that repeatedly stops at about 10 minutes into
the recording plays properly with SoftSqueeze, VLC and Samplitude on
the server.
The audio file was originally recorded and edited using Samplitude and
it is possible that there is something in the edited audio that results
in the Squeezebox stop. There are no known problems with the hardwired
Ethernet. It works properly with multiple other applications.

Forum is a latin word. I was taught in school to use the latin plurals.
Ergo the plural of forum is not forums but fora (or in some cases, I

Just like the plural of datum is data, the plural of referendum is

> How could I go wrong with the Linksys WRT54G?

Make sure to get the "WRT54GL". It might be $5-$10 more but it has
twice the resources.

Background: the reason the WRT54G became so popular is that some
hackers discovered it was running Linux, which might have been the
reason why it was so stable. At one point in time, it was the most
popular router. It went through hardware revisions until v5, when
Linksys went to an embedded proprietary OS, VxWorks, and cut the
ROM/RAM in half. Initial firmware for the v5 was virtually unusable.
Things have improved since - they're now on v8 (?), but still, this is
half the router it once was.

The WRT54GL is the Linux version, same as the v4. It has twice the
resources of the current WRT54G for only a few dollars more. You have
the option of installing third-party firmware like DD-WRT if you're
adventurous, but even if you don't, you get a better router.

Unless you buy directly from Logitech -- they charge 20.000 DKK -- just

1.700 mentioned in this thread. I don't think prices are up in general.

As I understand it the changed distribution channels, through Logitech
instead of directly from SlimDevices, changed pretty recently. Earlier
one could order directly from SlimDevices to Sweden, this is no longer
possible, we now have to order from the Swedish Logitech site.

The Dutch online shop I just checked still offers them for 1990 EUR.
BTW, they also offer the 'old' SlimDevices branded SB3's with a 30 EUR
markup. Isn't it usual for electronics to be more expensive when you buy
them directly from the manufaturer? So that online and brick & mortar
store can sell them at a nice discount? Aren't the SD products just
being brought in line with this policy?

[slim] Closed cabinet remote solution

2007-08-08 Thread thomsens

As much as I like the look of my audio components, I need to cover them
for day to day use with a closed cabinet. As a result, I'm looking for
a remote solution that will handle my transporter as well as my other
components while the door is closed. I want the remote device to be
able to display the album art and song details.

Harmony 1000/Jive look like they bring potential future capabilities to
the table, but I don't see that there is a clear roadmap anywhere to
what I'm looking for. Anyone know what's going on? I don't just want
a fancy front-end for slimserver since I'd like to control volume and
power for the entire system from the remote too, but transporter
control is the highest priority.

Re: [slim] Slow Chirpy Sound

thanks for the advice. network test shows that, at 1000, i am down
around high single digits or low teens. buffer fullness shows 0%.

i assume this must be a wireless connection issue. maybe time to try a
new router with a high gain antenna?

Re: [slim] Access Point Recommendations?

2007-08-08 Thread 4mula1

Mark and Jim are correct in their respective assertions that most people
use routers instead of access points as well as most routers can be used
like an access point.

In my setup at home I use an access point. I already had an 8 port
switch and have a dsl router. I felt an additional router would be
redundant. I have a Linksys WAP54G and it works great.

For my parents, I picked up a WRT54G. They didn't have an ethernet
switch, so this killed two birds with one stone. To avoid the router
functionality (they have the same dsl setup as me) all I did was plug
their computer and dsl router into the switch ports and leave the WAN
port open. Easy as pie and works great.

At the time I bought my parents their router it was 28USD cheaper than
the access point, and Sprawl Mart had the router in stock. If I had to
do it again I would've bought the router. Why not get the extra switch
ports and have the option of the DD-WRT firmware?

..but if you got to one of the US merchant sites it's listed at a
higher price - $199 on the only one I have access to from the office so
perhaps it's an incorrect price on the Logitech US
site? At $199 it's still a long way from £179 but I noticed PC World
had them on the shelves at £129.

Re: [slim] Can't start Slimserver service. Could it be MusicIP?

2007-08-08 Thread erland

Are you sure slimserver really restarted correctly, from these messages
it looks like it can't connect to the database, probably because the
old slimserver mysql instance is still running.

Try to shutdown slimserver and then run:
ps aux|grep slimserver

This will list all slimserver processes that is running after you have
shutdown.

If there are some running, kill them with the "kill" command.

Or as an alternative to all this you can just reboot the machine.

[slim] Can't start Slimserver service. Could it be MusicIP?

2007-08-08 Thread AndyHennah

Hi all,
I've been trying to set up MusicIP for a while now. It's finally
finished analyzing all of my songs (took a couple of weeks, due to slow
machine and big collection).
So, I started the headless server (./MusicMagicServer start) on my
server. Then I started SlimServer service. Then I enabled MusicMagic
in the web UI for slimserver and removed the Music Location field (as
it says on the interface). Then I did a complete rescan.
Success! I now have the coverted 'm' on all of my tracks and I spend a
happy evening creating mixes using MusicMagic - Great!!
Then slimserver hung - I restarted the service, it started ok.
However, whenever I try to start up the web UI for Slimserver it stops
the slimserver service.
I've looked in the error log for slimserver, it says :

So now I'm left with a Slimserver that won't start :-(
My guess is that the database is corrupt, but I have no idea how to
rebuild it without the UI. Is it possible to delete the database file?
If so, how? Or maybe there's another way of getting it all working
again.

I'm running the latest releases of Slimserver and MusicIP.
My server is running Linux, Fedora Core 3.

Re: [slim] Slow Chirpy Sound

2007-08-08 Thread peejay

Have you tried running the SB3 in a wired configuration instead of
wireless. This would rule out and wireless problems, which are of an
order of magnitude more difficult to sort out than some other
anomalies...I run my Squeezebox at about the same wireless signal
strength as you, playing lossless files with no problems, just to give
you an indication that signal strength alone is sometimes not a clear
indicator of potential problems.
Here's something to test. If a person stands in my kitchen blocking the
line-of-site path between the wireless router in my office and my
squeezebox, sometimes I experience what you describe...
Try running the performance tests accessible through your Squeezebox
remote - choose 'Plugins' then 'Network Test' (I'm running Slimserver
6.52 on XP and that's the menu path I use) ...they may also shed some
light...
Good luck.

Well I for one use Squeezeslave all the time, it puts a much lighter
load on my CPU than softsqueeze.

I have the same problem with squeezeslave dying if not used, but to be
honest it is not a show stopper for me, I simply kill it and restart it
if needed.
