OK I searched for it couldn't find - wrong keywords. But does this also
apply to FLAC files before others?

[slim] Major HW bug Transporter? No signal on analog after switch.

2007-08-21 Thread Audiotic

Dear Forum users, has anyone seen this before, or is my Transporter
faulty?

Reproducibly I get NO signal on the analog cinch output (the one I use)
of my Transporter after certain switches:

1. First playing high-bit FLAC files (like from LINN Records), then
trying to move to an M4U (ALAC) or MP3 encoded one, via SS.
2. Using one of the digital-in ports - I use them to have the
Transporter do the DAC conversion from my CD and DVD players, and then
again moving to SS files.

The only resolution is to take the power off the Transporter (pulling
the plug that is) and restart it. Of course this is very annoying.

Should I submit a bug or is it a HW issue?

I'm currently evaluating options for a new NAS server and I like the
look of the zfs filesystem so that pretty much restricts me to FreeBSD
or OpenSolaris so I'd find a Solaris wiki entry useful if I go down the
Solaris route.

Make sure you have both artwork and thumbnail settings entered if you
want both the album level and the gallery view to pick these up. For
the gallery view, you will need a wipe and rescan in order to collect
the thumbnails. There is also a known issue where artwork is not
picked up when the path has non-latin characters. Finally, it always
helps to double-check the permissions.

If you want to get a log from the scanner try:

/usr/local/slimserver/scanner.pl --wipe --d_artwork --d_import /path/to/music

Some of my cover art files are named 'Folder.jpg' (upper-case first

filename (with uppercase F) in Server Settings / Interface. I've done

Re: [slim] Library scan problems

2007-08-21 Thread DoomWolf

You may have also shed some light on it. The installation I did this on
was not my main one where I'd made the database changes, but a virtual
PC installation using the built-in database. What has changed, however,
are the composer tags in my music files that I mentioned in my post
earlier today (the virtual installation points to the same files as my
main install).

Slimserver would therefore see that the file's tags have been changed
(the composer tag being blanked) and this would trigger the updates in
the database. I can't see any TCMP tags anywhere, so it's looking like
this is perhaps related to the composer tag, which brings me back to
the problems I detailed at the start of this thread.

The player firmware contains code to handle the player side of the
slimproto communications protocol. The server software handles the
server side. As features of the server often require changes to some
elements of this protocol, the firmware version required is tied to
the server version used. If you run different versions of the server,
you will be prompted to "upgrade" as long as the firmware versions are
different. You can bypass this, but there is no guarantee that your
players will work if the firmware is not the one included with that
version of slimserver.

This thread mentions a method that you can use to do the bypass.

Re: [slim] Simplest PC to use?

2007-08-21 Thread AMRoberts

Hi ctodd,

FWIW, after some research at http://silentpcreview.com, I decided to
wait for Penryn before doing a new build for home file/slimserver (and
possibly DVR).

To deal with my new SB3's needs (and light home file serving) in the
short term, I've recycled an old IBM Thinkpad T23. I had a
non-functioning unit that turned out to have a reasonably quick fix.

Once I had it operating I:

- Changed out the memory to 1GB total ($125, eBay shopping)
- Added a Cardbus-to-ESATA adapter ($50)
- Antec MX-1 external drive enclosure ($60)
- Samsung HD501LJ 500GB drive ($120)

So I've got $355 invested (helps to start with the inoperable laptop of
course), plus the time to do a clean OS & software install.

The T23 has the 1.2GHz P3-M Tualatin (out-benchmarks my 2GHz P4
desktop). So far I've had it concurrently loaded with:

- playing music on the SB3
- extracting (EAC to FLAC)
- updating the web interface to my laptop, and
- running [EMAIL PROTECTED] protein folding at a 70% duty-cycle (lowest
  priority)

No playback problems so far. The CPU temp is cycling between 50C and
70C (fan comes on at 70C, very quiet out in the room, should be
inaudible once I put it in the rack). The Antec MX-1 and Samsung are
inaudible from about 0.5m away, I haven't seen the HD501LJ reporting
more tha 2C above ambient ... The MX-1 does a nice job of cooling.

Across a 48-hour test run my power meter reported the average power
consumption at 32w. My use pattern lets the Samsung (music and other
data, Thinkpad's internal drive is the OS) spin down for a lot of hours
during the day; the lid is closed (no display backlight), and SpeedStep
is dropping the P3-M's clock during the 30% non-Rosetta time.
Completely idle, external disk spun-down power was 21w.

I think you could beat those power numbers with the Via CPUs and
careful component choices, but if you've got an old laptop that can
keep itself cool without too much fan noise, you may be able to beat
the cost of a new Via-based build by "recycling."

Cheers,
Alan

You'll be glad you did. Slimserver performs an order of magnitude
faster on Linux than on Windows. This is especially noticeable when
rescanning your library and browsing cover art. I've had no problems
getting MiP to run headless on Linux. The MiP gui on Linux is
underdeveloped (even more so than the windows version) but this
shouldn't present you any problems if you're running it headless for
playlisting.

An Ubuntu reference guide I have found very useful over time is

Re: [slim] Transporter Price

The real shame is that for the price the transporter isn't "perfect" and
not even close to it as a review quoted on the slimdevices homepage
suggests. It's not even ready for sales!!! Switching from the digital
inputs to SS again renders the TP completely silent! I know that the
bug is being tracked. But I want to see renouned hifi companys deliver

Don't get me wrong! I love slimserver and thsu just had to get a

switching to or from digital inputs is not an exotic scenario for a dac
surpassing even the most exotic cd players.
Didn't you test? Didn't you even try it? I mean how the hell could one
have over looked such behavior of even a prototype? I really respect
the work of engeneering put into the unit but having paid 2,000 Euro
for it I think I am in the position to kintly ask you to make your
homework asap. Currently running fw 31. Very happy 99% of the time

Re: [slim] Library scan problems

2007-08-21 Thread snarlydwarf

Hrrm that may actually be a semi-clue.

Whenever Slimserver notices a file changed, it updates the database
(not well, which is why I do a clear-and-rescan every night in the
middle of the night...). Ie, if you change the tags on a track, then
click it in the WebUI or play it on the player, the database gets
updated with the changed tags.

So it sounds like Slimserver (as opposed to the scanner) is somehow
seeing "Oh, this file changed, let me update my database" when you do
that the 'why' is still a mystery, but since you deal with
databases all day you know computers are predictable and only follow
instructions, so the instructions or data are wrong somehow...

If you've changed stuff in the database, then, yes, it will change back
whenever one of the changed tracks is encountered.

The trick then is trying to figure out why it is seeing those two
albums differently than other similarly titled discs...I don't know
what tools Windows has to "really" look at tags. On Linux I use eyeD3
which can be coerced to display all id3 tags.

Is there a way to see if you have the TCMP tag set? That is
non-standard, "but itunes uses it!" and implies "this is a various
artists releases" which may confuse Slimserver on single artist
releases with the same name...

Re: [slim] Library scan problems

2007-08-21 Thread DoomWolf

I don't use iTunes (Creative Zen was a giveaway there ;) ) or MusicIP.
My thought was the tags, but I checked them over and over and
everything *seems* ok. Maybe there's some weird tags hidden from
MP3Tags view?

I've just opened up my Slimserver version in VirtualPC to see exactly
what it does:

Open web interface

Browse to Artists
Click 'Beach Boys, The'
Click 'Greatest Hits' - shows correct album

Browse to Artists
Click 'Red Hot Chili Peppers'
Click 'Greatest Hits' - shows correct album

Browse to Artists
Click 'Various Artists'
Shows two albums called 'Greatest Hits'
Click first 'Greatest Hits' - Displays album art of Beach Boys album.
Shows listing of Beach Boys tracks, followed by listing of Chilis
tracks from track 2.
Click second 'Greatest Hits' - Displays album art of Chilis album.
Shows track 1 of Chilis album

Now something strange: I've just browsed back to the home page and back
to Various Artists and now there's only one Greatest Hits with all
tracks except Chilis track 1. From there I click on the 'Red Hot Chili
Peppers' link and now see two Greatest Hits under them, one with tracks
1 and 2, the other with tracks 3 onwards.

As I click the Greatest Hits link in the breadcrumb links at the top,
the tracks move from one album to the other until one album is empty
and the other correctly populated. Now, going back to Various Artists,
the Greatest Hits album there only shows Beach Boys tracks, but only
from track 6. Clicking the breadcrumb links does the same as with the
Chilis one. Now I'm left with one correct album under each artist, 1
empty album under each artist, and an empty album under Various
Artists.

How is clicking navigation links in the web interface causing the
database to make these updates?

I'm confused!!!???

Are you using iTunes or MusicIP? Is the iTunes-TCMP tag being set at

They are in different directories:

M:\Music\Beach Boys, The\Greatest Hits
M:\Music\Red Hot Chili Peppers\Greatest Hits

All my music files are MP3. I cleaned all the tags using MP3Tag
(everything appears correctly in my Creative Zen Vision:M).

As you can tell from the above directory paths, all my music is stored
in an artist\album\track.mp3 structure in the Music folder on my M:\
drive

Re: [slim] Opinion: which is the best OS to run SlimServer?

2007-08-21 Thread Ron F .

I ran Slimserver under Win2K for a year on a clunker computer, and then
switched to SlimCD running on a small modern fanless machine. SlimCD is
based on Damn Small Linux, and was a little difficult to set up the way
I wanted, but Michael's latest version should be much easier.

Since then I have really gotten to enjoy Linux and I have migrated to
Ubuntu - and I love it. I have Slimserver running on my Ubuntu machine,
and it works great. I also have Softsqueeze running on Ubuntu, but it
does not seem to run for a lot of other people, and I cannot figure out
why (still trying to figure that out - but that is another forum
topic:)

It should work fine and recognize them as distinct albums if you have
them in different directories...

Have you reported these issues as bugs at http://bugs.slimdevices.com
?
It sounds like you have done some investigation and would be able to
write a bug report that describe both how the tags in the files looks
like and how the result after a rescan looks in the database.

Unless you actually report as a bug or contact Logitech/SlimDevices
support there is not much chance that any developer takes a closer look
at the problem and tries to solve it.

That's an exciting idea. If it were available and if it were quality,
I would consider buying a PCIe card with digital ins
& outs. It would be a nice addition to a home theater PC. Add a fully
functional web-based interface and, voila! - you just replaced your

Oops - missed the point about mac - trying mplayer is still valid if
nicecast is used to stream the audio from mplayer. Nicecast has a much
longer delay than wavinput so it may be harder to get sync.

You can use nicecast to broadcast a stream that slimserver can tune in
to like a radio station.
However this is unsuitable for synced video-audio playback because
there will be a significant lag in the audio playback due to buffering
in the squeezebox.
Search the forum for nicecast or icecast for more information.

Re: [slim] Library scan problems

2007-08-21 Thread DoomWolf

markc;221984 Wrote:
> Did a full uninstall/reinstall solve the problems, DoomWolf?

No. I tested it by doing a fresh install of 6.5.4 in a virtual machine,
and letting it scan from scratch. The result was the same as my main
installation.

What I have done since is to add a new tag to all my tracks called
'Writer' and copy the contents of the composer tag to the writer tag,
and then delete all of the composer tag information. This solved my
multiple artists problem.

However, I was still left with a few other issues. One being the Beach
Boys Greatest Hits problem I mentioned. Slimserver managed to mix it up
with another Greatest Hits album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (other
albums titled Greatest Hits weren't affected). All the tracks (except
one) from both albums were referenced as being one compilation album
under various artists, but were also listed under the two artists.
There was a separate Greatest Hits album for the Red Hot Chili Peppers
that only had the first track associated with it (yes, all the tags on
the other tracks were identical and correct as I checked closely in
MP3Tag). Changing the compilation field in the database to NULL made
the albums appear under each artist as "Greatest Hits by 'Beach Boys,
The' 'Red Hot Chili Peppers'".

I ended up having to go through the database tables changing various
fields and references to separate the albums into two entities. As
someone who works with databases on a daily basis, I'm able to do that,
but I consider it a serious failure for a consumer-level product. I wish
I could remember every step I had to take as I'm sure to need to do it
again next time I have to do a full scan.

I also still have the problem of being unable to make Slimserver see
multi-CD albums as being a single album, but I think I'll just have to
live with that for now.

Doing clear steps to isolate the problem could be mis-interpeted as
doubting the problem but many small tests can help. My theory is that
there could be something going wrong when your have disk and network
traffic together and slimserver trigger it. To prove this theory, it is
necessary to try different scenarios.

Do you get the errors if you copy the files across the LAN network
(e.g. from one PC to another PC or to a NAS).

I don't get error messages when playing files locally with iTunes, just
remotely with the Squeezebox. And I'm not trying to be sarcastic

Re: [slim] What does a $350,000 system sound like?

2007-08-21 Thread moley6knipe

At this sort of price range you could buy a good PA system! A friend of
mine spends his summers rigging PAs for gigs in various forests around
the UK - they've got the technology to the stage now that you hook your
laptop up to the speakers (all actives) and tell them exactly how to
behave - throw of sound, direction, height of image, freq response,
everything. Apparently with some systems you can stand two fields away
from a full rig blasting out and hardly know it's there, the sound is
so controllable!

Be interesting to see if this sort of thing ever makes it into hi-fi
speakers, i.e. just buy some speakers and your PC/Mac etc tells them
how/when/where to sound!

Re: [slim] What does a $350,000 system sound like?

I heard those monster speakers at the Heathrow hifi show last year.
They were driven by some huge amps, although the system wasn't $350k (I
think!).

They do remarkably well at not sounding there - you can't tell where
the speakers are if you close your eyes, so good are they at 'getting
the sound out of the box'. Just a lovely deep image.

However, they are quite hard-sounding, beyond the 'visceral impact'
that you can get with some horns. I couldn't live with them, although
I did love what they did well. At this cost level, as with any other,
there is compromise!

Re: [slim] Re-buffering of one radio station only.

2007-08-21 Thread slimpy

Anne

If you only have problems with this one station it could have one (or a
combination) of the following reasons:
1- too many concurrent users draining the stations bandwidth. Internet
radio stations should limit the number of concurrent connections to
make sure they only just reach their upstream bandwidth limit if that
number of connections is reached. If they don't then some or most users
will experience dropouts because the available bandwidth per user is
smaller than needed for the stream. A good indication is a reliable
connection to the station at always the time during the day and an
unreliable connection at other times over a period of days.
2- there is a bottleneck somewhere between your computer and the the
radio station's server. This could be anywhere in the internet,
depending on your and the remote server's location and the route the
data takes. Long response time when pinging the station's server can be
an indication.
Unfortunately there's hardly anything you can do in both cases.
If you contact the station the may be able to anwser No 1.

Re: [slim] Slimserver not 'seeeing' the same as iTunes

Also, just double check that you are pointing Slimserver to the right
Itunes .xml file. Someone had a similar problem with Slimserver not
picking up changes to his Itunes library and discovered that an upgrade
to Itunes had changed his cache filename. On the description below, I
think it's much more likely that you have inconsistent tags (as others
have mentioned) but worth double checking.

I believe the easiest way to do this is to make a change in your Itunes
library, and then check that the .xml file you have pointed slimserver
at shows a recent "last modified" timestamp.

find any response, so I'll go again :-)

If I connect via a cable, my media PC (hosting SS) to the SB3, and the
SB3 is connected via wireless to my router, will my media PC WAL? (the
MB has this function).
My media PC is in my lounge, so i don't want to leave it on all the
time.

Cheers

BT

No, d'n'd isn't an option. But you can browse music folders, go the newly added
album, and it should be added to SlimServer without a rescan.

no, not really. However, you can use the Browse Music Folder option
to navigate to the new music.
When you enter a folder that contains updated or new tracks, this
triggers a scan of that folder so that you
can play the tracks contained within that folder.

2007-08-21 Thread el rey

hi

is it possible to simply drag and drop tracks onto slimserver and by
this avoiding to rescan the library? (even the "look for new music"
option takes quite a while)

Re: [slim] Re-buffering of one radio station only.

2007-08-21 Thread euribe

Please read my post at
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37051&page=3

The radio channel you say is one of my favourites, but it's not the
only one with the "rebuffering" issue, and also my SB player is not
working fine from some weeks ago.

already replaced mysql server with the "stable" version.
I have some other webpages running on that same machine, which also use
mysql as the database backend, and they all keep running.

If it's not that old, why not contact Logitech about a repair or
replacement? Everything has a 2 year warranty now IIUC.
