Hey BPA... My whole environment is running under Windows, so that

fine. It's the actual M3U's that are created by Windows Media Player,

The easy way to check this is to attach some examples a working and non

I welcome you to look at them! :) There's a huge difference in the
formatting between what the slimserver GUI creates, vs. any other M3U
list. I've attached 2 M3U files, renamed to TXT.

I told support about this, but they didn't seem to be able to spend
much time analyzing them. I'm pretty sure that this is what the whole
problem is stemming from.

Thanks,

A modern 500G disk can do 60 Megabytes/Second. If you ignore seek

60 MB/sec is 491520 kbps, that would give you 348 1411 kbps wav

Disk bandwidth is a non-issue for slimserver.

If you use wireless connections, I suspect the first limitation you'll
run into is bandwidth, which you'll reach sooner or later depending on
the bitrate of your streaming format.

For example, with mp3 at an average of 192kbps, and assuming a 4Mbps
maximum network throughput (that's a generous maximum for wifi) you're
limited to 21 devices at best, and it's unlikely you'll reach that
number on a single access point.

Will flac at an average of 700kbps on the same network, you'll only
manage 5 devices, and probably less than that.

Of course, you'll have much more bandwidth on a wired 100Base-T network.

I've not tried it, but I suspect that a fast, modern CPU, with plenty of
RAM, and running some flavour of linux will not have much trouble
servicing many clients, but I have no figures to back that up.

Re: [slim] Multizones playing and PC power requirement?

Sonos with their proprietary hardware and Wireless protocol may have to
define a 32 Zone limit as it may run out of power / bandwidth beyond
that limit.

My guess is that Slimserver limits initially depends on how much money
you want spend on hardware and the complexity of the network as
bandwidth may become an issue.

Not something I've used... but following a quick test - you can select
all the files in a folder, add them to a playlist and then shuffle the
playlist before playback. A bit clunky but it seems to work.

[slim] Please Help! Squeezebox won't connect!

2007-11-30 Thread JT-I

Dear All,

I hope someone on the forum can help me with a recent connection
problem with one of my squeezeboxes. I have tried searching but could
not not find a solution that worked.

I have two SB3's, one in the living room and one in the kitchen. Both
are connected via homeplugs to my PC (Windows XP SP2).

Until last Saturday (11/25/2007) I had no problems with this set-up.
Then the kitchen player cut out several times before I went to bed. The
next day it would not connect to Slimserver (display reads connecting to
server, then nothing) and this is still the case.

The living room player still works perfectly. The homeplug attached to
the kitchen player is also operating perfectly. In Slimserver the
living roomplayer shows up but not the kitchen player.

I cannot understand why the living room player is connecting fine but
not the kitchen player? Then again I am not very technical. Any advice
would be most gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,

JT-I

2007-11-30 Thread barcar

Musketeer;246181 Wrote:
What do the rest of you use?

After a lot of research (and getting fed up waiting for a SlingCatcher
- http://us.slingmedia.com/object/io_1168286861787.html) I went for the
Freecom Mediaplayer-350 WLAN Drive-In kit
(http://www.freecom.com/ecproduct_detail.asp?ID=3406CatID=8060sCatID=1147633ssCatID=1147633).

It connects to your TV via HMDI or composite and streams lots of video
formats wirelessly, from an internal hard disk or USB media.

The Freecom device appears to be a rebranded Mediagate MG-350HD
(http://www.mediagateusa.com/html/mg350.html) or maybe they are both
rebranded versions of something else. In any case they are the same
hardware but Mediagate is US only.

I haven't found much it can't play back yet - it takes DivX/XVid, HD
Transport Streams, DVD images, etc. Of course, like the Squeezebox,
there is no support for DRM'd files but, like the Squeezebox, that's
not a problem.

Regarding the Freecom drive in kit - this is the playback hardware
without an internal drive (cheaper). My intention was to stream
remotely from my PC (like my SqueezeBoxen) which works fine but I ended
up buying a PATA hard drive to mount inside it. It now works as a NAS
and my video can easily be transferred via FTP or SAMBA file sharing.

With hindsight I should have bought one of the models with a drive
pre-installed - that would have been cheaper.

Hope that helps.

[slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2007-11-30 Thread Musketeer

After a couple of months with it I can say I am extremely satisfied with
my Squeezebox 3. Probably more so than with any other piece of
electronics I have bought for a long time. It does what it does really
well.

What is the best video equivalent to the squeezebox? I mean one that is
not in beta version 0.9, one that is second or third gen and stable. I
want one that streams most common video files (like divx) from network
storage and does it really well. It doesn't need to have a million
other features, like music streaming and web streaming etc.

I don't suppose you slim guys are working on a video squeezebox by any
chance??

What do the rest of you use?

PS: I hope it's not too inappropriate posting this here, I just figured
that the kind of people that buy a Squeezebox and are in here reading
the forums are likely to be good people to ask about video streaming!

Re: [slim] Stuttering m4a playback under Vista with Squeezebox

2007-11-30 Thread bpa

I think this may as a result of a change in SS/SC (possibly from 6.5.3
or 4) to minimise use of socketwrapper. AlienBBC works because it is
playing a stream and has its own code to handles the types.

Socketwrapper handles the #FILE# and #FILE# is needed because standard
mplayer cannot output WAV to stdout. I think SC will not use
socketwrapper when playing files of known types.

So to avoid changing any Slimserver code - what is needed is a AAC/m4a
decoder which uses stdin/stdout.

Answer: faad. (see http://www.rarewares.org/aac-decoders.php )

Unfortunately I don't the additional command line options to make faad
work but there are some Linux entries in the Wiki such as below - but I
have not tested these to see if there changes needed for Windows.

Code:

  # Transcoding for AAC files.
  mov flc * *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0
--endian little --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 -

  mov mp3 * *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [lame] --resample 44100 --silent -q $QUALITY$ -b
$BITRATE$ -x -r - -

  mov wav * *

No one really touched on this but in terms of CPU power SlimServer
scales pretty well. Unless you'll be transcoding, you won't need
anything special.

However transcoding 32 streams simultaneously will require some serious

You can try SC 7.0 beta now - it is very stable and close to release.

Alternatively attach an example file to a post.

If you have been editing the playlist on Windows but Slimserver runs
under Linux then it is likely you have added characters into the file
which may cause problems with Slimserver even though the files look
good.

[slim] Move playlist to another player

For example, I'm in room A listening to queued stuff and decide to move

I'm thinking of a send playlist to another player feature which

Well, I wrote a videobox program for Windows once... ;)

http://videobox.sourceforge.net/

What do the rest of you use?

I'm already running a home (linux) server anyway (for slimserver etc.)
so I prefer to use that for my video solution as well. The big
disadvantage of using a server is that it's big and noisy (if it's a
good one). This can be solved by confining it to it's own space, I have
a small utility room that's well suited for that. The audio/video signal
from the server is broadcast thru the house over the TV cable system
(with an AV modulator). That gets the picture and audio to the TV sets.

For software I use MythTV as well as mplayer and vlc. To control the
MythTV/mplayer/vlc software I use my own slimserver lirc plugin. That
way any squeezebox remotes keypresses are sent to the MythTV/mplayer
application (whenever the SqueezeBox itself is in standby). Since I have
a SqueezeBox near every TV, that completes the puzzle.

It may not be a turn-key solution (MythTV is a bit of a hassle to set
up) but it works very well for me in practice and I don't have all kinds
of unsightly and noisy boxes around the house. In fact, I don't even
have a DVD-player. ;)

Peter

Re: [slim] Bitrate Display

2007-11-30 Thread Mark Lanctot

Where are you seeing this?

I don't think this was changed in 6.5.4 from 6.5.2, and when I click on
a file in my 6.5.4 it gives:

Bitrate: 128kbps CBR

(for example).

The new SC7 behaves the same.

Could you provide a screenshot?

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2007-11-30 Thread Musketeer

Good news:

I just read that next week's dashboard update for the xbox 360 will
give improved video codec support. Allegedly this includes divx/xvid
support.

Its no video squeezebox, but if you already have a 360 - I do - it
becomes a quick and costless option. I wish it wasn't so noisy though!

Bad news:

I use the Readynas NV+ to store my media. I don't have the latest
firmware installed, but it is needed to use UPnP with the 360.
Unfortunately there are reports of problems using the Readynas with the
Squeezebox after the upgrade.

Damn it, I don't want to mess up the sweet Squeezebox + Readynas combo
I have working here, but I would like to be able to stream my divx
files to my xbox!

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2007-11-30 Thread ceejay

As it happens, I'm in the market for such a device (video equivalent to
SB) at the moment. I'm planning to build a new media server which, as
well as storing my music library and running slimserver, will contain
my DVD collection and a bunch of other video material. This is of
course only feasible now that 750GB+ discs are a reasonable price.

The impetus for doing this was that - having cleared my living room of
CDs some time ago - I'm getting annoyed by having a pile of DVDs build
up instead!

Candidate devices include:

Netgear EVA8000
Linksys KISS 1600 (also includes DVD player)
DViCO TViX M5100SH/M4100SH
Popcornhour Network Media Tank

Of course none of these are exactly equivalent to the SB, this is very
much an immature market. I wouldn't be at all surprised if I end up
dumping the first device I buy for something better in a year or so's
time - but the main investment is going to be in the server, and in my
time setting up the content, so I'm not too bothered about that.

It should also be pointed out that all of these devices also play
music, so are in a sense competitors to the SB: audio quality is
obviously not a priority, so I guess many current users will be happy
to keep both, but I am sure that the mass market will only want one
such device in their living room. There's yet another direction for
Logitech to be looking at.. (lets say, start with a Netgear
EVA8000, add a small display, add Slimserver support, put a half-decent
DAC in - $500 anyone?)

avforums (UK bias) covers this sort of thing, amongst many others.
