[slim] Remote Control Issue

2007-12-10 Thread ceepan

I have been having issues with my Remote Control for a couple of months.
When the power button was pressed the Squeezebox 3 came on, but
pressing any other buttons did nothing.

I enabled the logging of remote commands and only saw the presses of
the power button.

This hasn't been too much of a problem as I have been using my laptop
to control the Squeezebox. However, I recently rebuilt the PC running
the server. The IP address has changed. As a result the Squeezebox is
asking me to setup networking etc. As the Remote doesn't appear to be
working I can't do this.

Has anybody else had issues with the remote control like this. Should
I just buy a replacement to solve my problems?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: [slim] Magic FM

2007-12-10 Thread bpa

Since the problem is mainly with internet radio - then the cause is
probably your broadband connection. Internet radio especially live
streams need a smooth flow of data. If the flow is lumpy or start/stop
(you can see this when doing a file download) - this has no effect on
browsing or downloads but with live radio some audio packets are
delayed and arrive too late to be played so you get a gap.

I've heard reports of this (especially at peak times) with the 3G (not
ADSL) based broadband services.

The real solution is a better service but a workaround can be better
buffering to smooth out the lumps but this may not always be enough.

With Squeezebox and Slimserver the actions you can take
1. Increase Buffering to say 30 - under Server Setting/Network/Radio
Station Buffering. This will delay when the station starts playing.

2. Make PC and Slimserver do some buffer -
(i) For MP3 streams under Player Settings/Audio change MP3 Streaming to
Proxied
(ii) For WMA streams on Windows based Slimserver - uncheck Server
Settings/FileTypes/Windows Media (built-in) and click change.

Wifi in open country (i.e. no buildings) has a long range. In Dublin
from the attic I can detect (not use) UCD's wifi network 4 miles away
- line of sight with the UCD's Water Tower which has an access point.

Re: [slim] Remote Control Issue

2007-12-10 Thread bpa

Change the battery - a weak battery has enough charge to turn on SB but
then not enough for any other button.

Check the remote is working by using a digital camera/video
camera/mobile phone camera as they are sensitive to IR light from
remote.

View the LED at the front of the remote through the camera - when you
press button - you should see LED light up if remote is working.

I hae a SB2 and a reciva radio. Undoubtedly the SB2 wins hands down but
the Reciva radio occasionally has the Internet Radio advantage. The

Okay... More oddities.

Using SC7 with leopard is causing some strange things to happen. Tracks
start at seemingly random places (ie middle of the song).

I did a clean install of 6.5.x and that cleared everything up.

Today (after finding iPeng the really nifty iphone skin) I reinstalled
the latest version of SC7. Same thing happens, tracks start at random
places, also happens when advancing to the next track in the playlist.

(Also the web interface is not playing well with Safari, looks rather

Anyone else run into this?

Looking foward to the final release of SC7! Hope this helps.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Leopard

2007-12-10 Thread ShawnAllan

Well, when I went back into safari to take a screen shot, everything
looked great! Dig the new interface!

If this should happen again I will take a screenshot. Originally all of
the icons on the (left side column) were on top of each other.

Still though, the way the songs are starting is what is preventing me
from listening to my squeezebox (under sc7). I've tried different
albums, artists, playlists, file types, etc. All result in songs
starting at places other than the beginning. This happens when
controlling squeezebox from sb remote, mac (running server), and iphone
(ipeng).

The interface still thinks the song is starting at 0:00 (the scrubber
does not appear to be in sync with the music).

One more question... from the web interface how do I get back to
squeezecenter after switching to squeezenetwork?

Scaremongering

The file filtering is only when you install the remote sharing
software, and only for non authorised users.

For example, if you log into their (windows only) sharing software with
the owner account, you can get all the content. If a guest logs in, they
get the filtered list.

It isn't an evil drive, just rubbish software. And when you actually
understand what it is doing and why, it is perfectly sensible.
Otherwise, WD could be taken to court for facilitating the distribution
of copywriten content.

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it

I have read all the threads regarding nokia N770/800, and as a result
did buy the N800.

Primarily I wanted to improve the waf (wife accept).
Problem is that using the /touch skin for N800, the stylus still need
to be used, not all the time, but at some functions it will be needed.

It would have been excellent if there could be a skin which I could use
only a thumb to touch on the screen, otherwise if the stylus is
required I would say the 4 screen is to small to use.

I wish there would have been larger buttons in the nokia skin

Otherwise it's really great!

Nice - didn't know that would be possible. I see some details though,
for example this would require a clean shutdown of SC whereas the OP is
probably looking for something that would work with a crash, power
outage, etc. Secondly, someone with muliple players may want some of
them on SN all the time - so SC shouldn't just blindly pull back all
the players it can find on startup.

The second issue is just a UI/config thing, but to properly solve the
first case I think it would need a firmware change to have the SB
(optionally) connect to SN whenever it loses the SC connection.

You didn't read his post very carefully. It's only the sharing
software that blocks those file types. Used as an network-connected
NAS on the local network, it behaves as any other drive. No doubt WD
got the fine idea to create a drive with some software that makes it
easy to share files with your friends and family, then they probably
caught Holy Hell from the RIAA for facilitating file sharing.

Yes it's a rubbish system for trying to block content, but thats the
method they have chosen. You do not need to install that sharing
software, it's not the hard drive that is blocking the content. If you
use it as a regular external drive, guess what? it works exactly the
same way as any other external hard drive.

2007-12-10 Thread HyperDevil

Hi,

I have custom made an RSS feed using PHP and Mysql.
http://weather.larsdebruin.net/weather.php
It has been checked by feedvalidator.org and is ok.
Then i put this RSS feed into my SlimServer, the squeezebox
stops showing the RSS after Air Pressure.
When i open this RSS feed in my browser it works as it should.
I have restarted SlimServer + restarted the Squeezebox and i still have
the same problem.
Has someone an explanation?

Re: [slim] Slimserver Leopard

2007-12-10 Thread Cruzan

There is a small issue with v3.5 of Softsqueeze. It won't work with 5.x
of Java, which is the default on Leopard. (6.x isn't on Leopard!)

It's easy to fix: run the Java Preferences app in utilities/java and
choose 1.4.2 as your engine, and it works fine.

3.5 adds sync support, and it works terrifically. It's on Sourceforge.

Re: [slim] Music sounds better with you?

2007-12-10 Thread Brian Ritchie

This weekend, we made a playlist of almost all the rock albums we've
acquired this year, then had this playing on shuffle for many hours.
This went some way towards working out our Best of 2007 playlist
(though we haven't actually made it yet). It was *much* more fun doing
it this way than listening to each album separately.

Brief and far from scientific tests have suggested that our CD player
still outperforms the SB3, but the sheer convenience of the SB3 wins
out.

[slim] Switching to Imac--how to name the nas in Leopard?

2007-12-10 Thread 1030bourbon

I have been successfully (and painlessly) running several versions of
Slimserver for a year and a half or so, on a squeezebox and a
Transporter, most recently on an old PC with Ethernet wired to the pc
and the transporter, and a wireless connection to the squeezebox. I
decided to move up. I just successfully managed to connect the
transporter to the server software running on the Imac. I still cannot
get the Slimserver to accept the name of the NAS/directory/etc.

Does anyone know the naming convention? I have even tried pasting and
it doesn't work.

I'm running 6.5.4 on an 8-day-old Imac.

Thanks.

2007-12-10 Thread JJZolx

At first. A little less as time goes on.

I still find it cumbersome to randomly browse through my library to
select something to play. Mostly, I think, due to the sluggishness of
browsing albums in the web interface. A wall of CD spines is still
(somewhat surprisingly) easier to use when picking something out. I'll
often actually look through the CD rack and then play whatever I find
using the SlimServer web interface.

But it does other things well. Random play, playlists, searches. I
don't use playlists much at all, and random play only for background
listening. Searching is the main thing - to find all the recordings of
'Winter Wonderland' that I have, or quickly find all the tracks by Mel
Torme.

[slim] Wow - Squeezebox in Frys

2007-12-10 Thread OffBeatMammal

I was in Frys over the weekend and saw my first every Squeezebox in a
mainstream retail outlet a nice little display hooked up to a pair
of Logitech speakers (shame they still don't sell a bundled offering
with the SB3 controlling the speakers on/off etc).

two really funny things... it was next to a Roku that looked quite
old and unworthy, and the guy standing next to me looking at the
display and admiring it was a merchandising guy from Creative!

Shame I didn't buy the Logitech Z5500 speakers I'd gone there to get
(they'll hook up to the SB3 and the TV in the living room, the Z4i set
will go to the SB3 down in the exercise/rumpus room) ... Frys wanted
almost $100 more than Newegg (they're currently in transit with UPS...
I'm counting the hours!)

I've got SqueezeCenter v7 nightly builds running on my WHS (it was the

It works like a dream

The only time I have to remote into the desktop is to do an upgrade
(hint: for v7, including future nightly builds, can we have an
auto-updater that we can set to check/run at 3am!)

I use Moose on a UMPC (Samsung Q1U) as the fancy remote to control the
two SB3s in the house (with SB3 remotes and a Logitech Harmony for
simple point-n-click stuff)

Having a WHS add-on to make managing from any of the connected machines
would be nice for folks less comfortable with the whole RDP thing...

[slim] Wi-Fi Internet Clock Radio?

2007-12-10 Thread Musketeer

I've been spoilt by my Squeezebox. You see its given me easy access to
my whole music collection, countless radio stations from every corner
of the world and podcasts of every nature. My living room audio is
fully catered for.

Because of this, lately the bedroom clock radio is starting to get
really annoying. Being limited to the few local AM/FM stations with
scratchy reception and packed full of advertising is just not cutting
it anymore.

I would get another Squeezebox, but it doesn't quite fill the need. I
need a small, tidy, bedside unit that has its own speakers and
dedicated buttons for presets, snooze etc without having to navigate
menus for everything. This would be used to go to sleep to and to wake
up to.

I can see some devices on the net, but am not too sure about some of
them. Roku seems to have released something recently, but its a touch
on the chunky side and I'm more of a Slim person ;) I wonder if the
Slim/Logi guys have anything in the works?

Do any of you use a wifi internet clock radio that you can recommend?

It's just that the reciva database is currently used by probably more
than TWO dozen different internet radios and is regularly updated by
all the users of those radios. Consequently it seems to be the largest
database on streaming radio Im aware of. You can get the picture here
https://www.reciva.com/ according to their front page data they say:
Our directory contains 8706 stations (and 21242 on-demand streams) in
262 locations and 60 genres.
21,599 registered users.

certainly iots the system powering nearly all the wifi radios available
in the uk.
