Thanks andyg, ... but is mms equal to http? Anyway, I got around it. In server settings/Filetypes, I unchecked the last filetype "Windows Media (built in)". Re: [slim] Australians being screwed on price??
I'm surprised that some people are coming off so shocked here. I know some names have been around long enough to know this ISN'T all a logitech thing. Complaining about pricing has been here since before I came along. In fact, I've even been part of it going back to 2001 when I paid 100% premium on SliMP3 when I'm only 2.5 hours north by plan from SD home base. I'm part of a big company now myself, and it has many divisions around the world with their own contracts for sales. Product development creates a product and each regional sales "company" does their own work at creating a market locally and selling the product. Other regions do not interfere. I'm not sure how "kids" is more offensive than the implication of being "screwed". As one who sits on both sides (user and dev) I think there are thicker skins needed on both sides. Users aren't the only ones who are allowed to be frustrated. As early responding trolls in this tread have already posted in other threads, offensive language..."get over it". This thread has been inflamed by early trolls as much as anyone else. No doubt, I'm now a target too, but I've been there. But the main point is, if you really hate the pricing then attack the local operating company. Now that the Canadian Dollar is at par with the US, there is a lot of that going on in Canada. Please do the same in your region. Prices are market driven, and you are the market. Drive away folks. -kdf -- kdf kdf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43128 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SB3 Wireless Signal Strength Drops For No Reason
I have had my SB3 for a couple of weeks now, and one problem that I keep having relates to the wireless signal strength. If the unit is idle (read: off) for a length of time (overnight) then the signal strength of the unit drops to ~20%. If I powercycle the unit then the signal strength usually returns to ~70%. When the unit is operating at ~20% the audio (flac) cuts in and out. When the unit is operating at ~70% the audio is fine. Since a powercycle of the SB3 returns the signal strength to ~70% and my laptop registers "Excellent" on its wireless card I feel safe to rule out a wireless network problem. I searched these forums for similar problems but failed to find any. -- Dubious Dubious's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15235 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43181 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I also have a squeezebox and the harmony 1000 remote. I then did a edit of the setup, and the buttons where missing in the "> display. Then i choose to delete all the listen to music settings, and when i did a setup again it worked like a charm. When i add the squeezebox in the list of components i choose it from slimdevices and writes squeezeboxt, and then it's called a musicserver squeezebox afterwards. Re: [slim] Controlling streams via squeezebox
You could look at this although it may need some tweaks for Windows. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=116967&postcount=4 Basically any string prefixed by mply:// will get passed to the $FILE$ in the custom-convert.conf file. You need to replace the mplayer command line option by VLC stuff. There may be some work with socketwrapper but I can't remember with SS 6.5. You can then create radio stations say for channel ABC as mply://ABC. If you put these entries in MyPicks or Favorites they can be given "nice" names. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43170 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

jaffacake;266378 Wrote: > Ah, so the open nature of the SB makes it complicated when connecting to > 3rd party proprietary networks like Rhapsody? > > Is this why i heard the new Duet controller isn't fully open source? Some of it's DRM, but mostly it is because the core design of the Squeezebox is "slim". The Squeezebox must always have a connection to a server (SqueezeCenter on your PC, or SqueezeNetwork on the internet) in order to function. Each Squeezebox is separate, they don't mesh or talk at all. They are slaves to the server. Sync is done by having the server control the playback timing. With a local server the internet streams are "proxied" so only one internet stream is required and the SqueezeCenter does the multiplication for the number of Squeezeboxes. The Squeezebox Controller (Duet remote) was fully open source last I checked out the code from the subversion server. :-) My personal recommendation is this: I would download the SqueezeCenter beta software and give it a try with SoftSqueeze. This will show you almost exactly how it will function with the the Squeezebox and Duet systems. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos
This might not be popular here , but I recommend the Sonos system. I looked at the Duet first, but after reading the forums here extensively (!) I realized that it can be buggy and/or a hassle it you are unlucky. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of an open-source system, but I just want the system to work, if not because it's a big selling point to my wife (who is a little tired of my extensive tech-escapades). I talked to my friend who has the Sonos, and got a bundle. I'm exceptionally pleased, after 20 minutes I had the System connected and up and running on my Fit-PC (check it out at www.fit-pc.com , I love it), tablet, desktop, my wife's Mac and the included controller. I'll rate the Sonos-system a 10, first time ever for a product by me (and I've tried quite a few)! Also, the customer service is exceptional. Slim Devices is really really good as well, I've received great advice really fast here at the forum. But the Sonos experience was in a league of its own: I asked a few questions at the forums and got immediate replies.I sent a question by mail and got a free number to call from Sweden (!). I didn't call (solved it, it was about a firewall), but two weeks later I got a question by mail asking if the question was solved, if not they had added the answer to the FAQ. I had to call support later on, and it took some time to solve it, but I got told that "I'm here till we fix this" by the tech-guy. Turns out it was my router, not the Sonos. Tech- guy: "Glad to help". This kind of customer support is unheard of in Sweden. Ok, I think we've beaten up enough on the guy. If he hasn't gotten the message re his behaviours/ attitude by now he's never going to get it (one can only hope...). Don't expect an apology/ clarification either, I doubt one will be forthcoming. Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos
I don't claim to know anything about the Sonos architecture but I would guess they only have one connection to the Rhapsody audio and then transport the decrypted audio within their closed network to each player. We can't do that, so each player needs a separate connection to the Rhapsody server. The reason internet radio can't be synced well when on SN is because each player must make its own connection to the radio server, which means each player will most likely start at a different point in the audio. There is no way to sync the audio if they don't start from a known good point. This is why sync does work fine for track-based content such as Pandora - all the players will start playback at the same time with the same exact file. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Check out jriver media center. It does a very nice job for me keeping my 4th gen and 6th gen ipod in sync with my FLAC collection. I use to do the perl script method of keeping FLAC and MP3 copies in sync, but found that to be a major pain in the butt. Mostly due to issues using iTunes. So when I dropped itunes I discovered how much nicer it was to have on-the-fly trancoding. If you have a dual core pc or better this is actually fairly fast. Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos
Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you already had one SB. re 'fiddling' I think it's quite possible that you could get the duet, take it out of the box and have it working in a few minutes. You'll find some testimonials elsewhere here to that effect. It's not that there is some necessary difficult process to go through. And in fact if all you want to do is run Rhapsody you aren't likely to have to do much or any 'fiddling.' It's also possible that it doesn't just 'work' (maybe you're network is not set up right? etc.). You'll also find threads here to that effect as well though if you follow them through many of them have to do either with other issues outside the SB world (network, router, etc.) a number of them have to do with Slimserver (now SqueezeCenter) and setting up a PC-based musicc server. In any case, I am most definitely NOT a programmer and the total amount of 'fiddling' for me over the past several years has been quite minimal (I went through all sorts of hijinks unrelated to SB when ripping my extension CD collection. But that's another story altogether...). Money was not an issue for me. I did look carefuly at Sonos (having been an early adopter with the late Audiotron) and just thought the SB approach was better. As long as your willing to do a miminal bit of problem-solving and willing to avail yourself of the tremendous resources through this forum you should end up a happy camper. (btw, if you do go down this path you'll find a wealth of information elsewhere in this forum on powered speakers and other multi-room ideas with the SB) -- cshaida cshaida's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

With the Duet and new Controller, I don't think there is any reason to go w/Sonos. $400 for first room v. $1k; $150 for subsequent rooms v.$400. Comparable sound (I think SB is better, but it is debatable) and vastly more functionality for SB. I don't even really think the Sonos is that much easier to use. With both, you need to set up a music server and that was the difficult part for me. The SB itself takes 3 minutes to get working once the server/network is up an running. I have about 700 CDs but I havent put the time into ripping them because I dont have time in my life with the kids and all that. I looked into a ripping service but then I discovered Rhapsody on my PC and $120/ year for unlimited music was cheaper than ripping and the kids love it because we always have the latest music as it comes out. But, were stuck in my home office with all the music in the world coming out of a PC and I want to get it into the playroom, our bedroom and the family/living/dining combo room. It seems like Duets and powered speakers are quite a bit cheaper than a Sonos 4 room setup with speakers. All music will come directly from Rhapsody. Im really excited by the idea that I wont need to run my own jukebox software or a PC at all! Sorry in advance if these questions are already answered. Re: [slim] Australians being screwed on price??
I was not going to get involved in this before reading mvaleras original note since I doubt Ill buy a duet anytime soon. But I am a very loyal customer, read the forums, own multiple machines and have some emotional committment to what happens to the company. The reason I have an emotional committment to one company and not another is complex but not necessarily because I am some kind of deluded European socalist. I believe the Squeezebox to embody some values. Obvious ones like quality and excellence but less obvious ones like the committment and effort of the slim devices workforce (as embodied by Sean) Its not that I delude myself they are anything other than a commercial company, rather that i take them to be a certain kind of commercial company i.e. one that takes a longish term view of customer relationships in the belief that it will do better in the long run. Thats some explanation of the thriving community the squeezebox has here and similar products (which have probably had more marketing money behind them) do not. In turn the thriving community leads to the rich variety of additional squeezebox features that are derived from the community itself and in trn enahnce the community. I AM NOT a deluded fool for taking slimdevices to have some values beyond "what can we get away with", Historically it certainly had values beyond that and indeed semmed positivley to believe that its relationship with its customers was part of what was going to make its prodycts special.. I FEEL that for reasons expressed above by Oktup the policy of PREVENTING us from buying direct at whatever regional price (plus tax plus shipping) seemed best value to us was one big symbol of the slimdevices I imagined I knew. OF COURSE they had local distributors who might be setting local rates but we could always buy direct. No longer. Now the pathetic thing to say is say "I'll never buy another Slim product again" a) it may not be true b) they might not care even a little bit but commercial success and failure is often about the marginal differences - the slight emotional engagement we have with one company and not another - Slimdevices loses that at its peril. And finally Mvalera - really - you come over as the worst kind of one dimensional capitalism-is-faultless-so-shutup-socialist-whiners apologist. That can't be good for business. I am compelled to reply due to your provocative tone ;) It's all well and good to set prices according to local markets, but what is *also* being done is an artificially imposed trade barrier (by restricting who can order from the web-store). In a proper free market situation, the customer would be free to buy directly from whichever market they chose. But unfortunately, although the good old multinationals are happy to be globalist when demanding unfettered access to cheap labour and production, they're strangely anti-competitive when it comes to allowing the customers to play by the same rules. Hence some of the whining, I suppose ;P -- oktup oktup's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1117 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43128 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Slimserver User Access Restriction
Hi there, I have a Slimserver running from my shed office in the garden to my house via a ssh over the internet. Is there a way to have user rights and restrictions...ie I do not want my kids to change any of the settings or fiddling on the left hand pane, though would like them to make their own playlists etc. Can i make some of the menu items in the left pane when looking at http://x.x.x.x:9000 dissapear or be greyed out so only an admin can change them...? many thanks A -- addyman addyman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15380 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43147 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Network question after EMP burst
Good morning. As some of you may have read, we had tornados/bad weather here in Arkansas last night (we're OK). We had a huge lightning strike in my back yard that apparently generated a substantial enough electromagnetic pulse to blow all of my computers (and almost every microprocessor controlled appliance) off line. While I have been successful in getting almost everything back up, one of my remote wired Squeezeboxes 3 refuses to find/log into the network. I'm running a Leopard (10.5.1) server using only an ethernet-wired network. Have done the reconfig routine on the computer, the network hubs and the Squeezeboxes, yet I can get only one Squeezebox 3 to log onto my Slimserver network. Any ideas? Thanks very much. Indeed. The manufacturer won't sell for less than the recommended retail price, precisely because it cannot undercut its distributors (or it soon won't have any). However, there is nothing to stop a distributor accepting a smaller margin on a sale by selling below the RRP. Note that this means that if the manufacturer and the distributor sell for the same price, the manufacturer will make a bigger profit if you buy from them rather than from the distributor... -- Khuli http://www.last.fm/user/khuli Khuli's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=851 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43128 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
