[slim] Speaker vibrations bad for Squeezebox?

2008-02-20 Thread sand

Hi all,

I just bought a pair of active speakers (Audioengine 5), and I'm very
happy with them - the Squeezebox looks great standing on top of one of
them (I've put it on the one with the amplifier inside).

A stupid thought maybe, but I wonder if there could be any downside to
placing the Squeezebox right on top of an active speaker - for instance
could the vibrations from the speaker harm any of its components - what
do you think?

What system is running Slimserver/SqueezeCenter ?

There is a bug with similar symptoms with some NAS based slimserver
(e.g. QNAP) as a result of a floating point error on processors which
have no FPU such as ARM.

Provided your speaker is well spikes to the floor, I vibtrations will be
minimal. You could always place your SB on a small rubber mat.

I would be more concerned about heat from the amps and strong magnetic
fields.

Somehow I think claims like "physical media is dead" are a bit
premature. And the new HD content is The problem there.

Think about the bandwidth required to stream 1080p content to thousands
and millions of customers. Can you imagine it becoming available anytime
soon? I don't think so.

So, we are stuck with little plastic discs for quite some time as long
as the HD content is considered.

Thank's for your input. The speakers are relatively small (10" x 7" x
8"), not spiked. My thought was that smaller speakers might 'jump
around' more..?

I'll check for heat. The speakers are magnetically shielded, so I hope
that is not a problem.

Seems that the SB is ok, then.

Opening up a port would be needed if you have a firewall on, but you
say you haven't.

By the way (long shot, but could just be relevant) did your iMac come
with Leopard or is this an upgrade from Tiger? The Leopard firewall is
significantly different from the Tiger one, and I am just wondering if
some old firewall rules could have been carried over.

See this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35718
for a plugin that works on Slimserver 6.5, but not yet converted to
SC7.

I also use Winamp and Shoutcast server (free to download) to stream any
audio played on my PC. The Winamp DSP plugin allows you to feed the
input of your PC audio card to the server. You can then stream the
audio to the Squeezebox as if it was an internet radio, but on your
internal network.

I use this successfully to stream Launchcast (Yahoo) audio to my
squeezebox and have also tested with other stations using browser
players. Sound quality can be a bit mixed though!

Details available here: http://www.shoutcast.com/download/

The site has comprehensive instruction on how to set it to work. Once
you are streaming, tune in slimserver to the winamp server on your PC.

I use WinXP but a similar system is available for Linux if that is what
you are running.

I haven't tried it on My ClassicFM because the player locks up my
browser (today).

Our overall intent is to minimize the "noise" -- the stuff that
detracts from the quality information here. I think everyone on the
staff, and in the community, would object to blatant sexism, but this
is an incredibly diverse group of people and what one culture finds
objectionable, another finds normal.

There's going to be times when someone uses a little off-color humor,
sexual innuendo, etc. I'd hate to see that normal human interaction
diminished, even though it might offend someone. We'll use judgement
-- our very best, even -- to decide what to do.

We were quite sincere about wanting to moderate as little as possible,
and about being completely open to fine-tuning our moderating style.
We'll try to judge what's good / bad, but we will listen to everyone's
feedback and adjust as we go.

And, for the benefit of people just tuning in, we will NOT delete posts
critical of our products unless they directly violate one of the general
guidelines.

SB does recognize _some_ codes, eg. the NAD SR-5. You best enable IR logging in
SC (Settings->Advanced->Logging: player.ir=debug). Then point your remote
control at the player, press some buttons and see whether they are recognized.
That's the procedure I used to create the IR file for the SR-5:

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter / Flac->Mp3

2008-02-20 Thread slimpy

Why would you want to stream flac as mp3 to the squeezebox?
Server OS?
Search for lame.exe on windows or lame on linux (usually in /usr/bin or
/usr/local/bin).
You also need flac so make sure it is installed (flac.exe or flac).
Lame for windows can be found 'here'
(http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php) and flac 'here'
If you are on linux then use your package manager to install lame and
flac.

[slim] SqueezeCenter / Flac->Mp3

2008-02-20 Thread Klaus

Hi

I just try to setup my squeezecenter (7.0 - 17599) on a remote server.
I want to change the settings, that it streams my flac files as mp3 to
my squeezebox.

For this, on Players -> Audio I change "Bitrate Limiting" to 320kbps.
The screen there says, "The LAME encoder appears to be installed
correctly on your system".

On Advanced -> File Types, I want to set in the Flac Section:
FLAC: Disabled
MP3: flac/lame

When i make apply, it rewerts the flac/lame setting always to disabled.

I tried to find if I have somehwere the lame-encoder, but personlly i
think, it's not installed and the message from the squeezecenter is
wrong.

Questions:
1) is that what i try to do correct for forcing squeezecenter to stream
mp3 to squeezebox
2) how can i verify if lame is installed or not
3) if not, where can i download it

Thanks

I've said my piece on this a few times, but as one of the (few?) women
who post on here regularly, I'd agree with what Jim and others have
said. Personally, I dislike the way "WAF" can and is used, but I've
never seen it as anything other than affectionate here and, as a
result, can't get too wound up about it.

Where I do agree with James is that there's sometimes a general level
of background chatter which is pretty off-putting to the casual female
browser and does (again, in my opinion) on occasions reinforce the idea
that women can't do anything other than "plug and play" technology.
However, it's far from exclusive to this forum and isn't something you
can moderate (IMHO).

I also think haunyack's response hits the nail on the head - in every
human relationship we tend fall into roles: one welds, the other cooks,
one does technology, the other pays the bills on time. If it works for
you, it's hardly sexist. What's sexist is assuming that everyone else
is the same way or that's the "right" way to be.

[slim] CLI help on playing favorite via batch file

2008-02-20 Thread twylie

I'm trying to simplify my wife's use of a SB3 hooked to a whole house
audio system. She comfortable pulling up the web interface and playing
a favorite (local AM talk radio). I'd like to script this so she can
press a button (on her PC or in the automation system) that opens a
telnet session to the server and tells that player to begin playing a
specific favorite.

I have been able to get all the favorites to load in a playlist and
begin playing the first one via the following:

 favorites playlist play

I experimented with the item_id:1.1 and all variations 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 in
order to get it to play the second item in the favorites list, but no
avail. I have moved her "station" to the top of the playlist folder so
it's effectively working, but a bit of a kludge. For my information,
I'd love to be able to know how to access a specific favorite.

I appreciate any guidance or direction on this.

There was also a truncation issue with AAC files in 6.5.x, fixed in

It might be a good idea to have a separate thread with guidelines for
the forum. I've seen this in the Adobe InDesign forum (where I used to
be a regular) and it works very well. Not only is there a chance people
will read the guidelines, but when they do not, it is very easy to point
'offenders' to that thread.

BTW, a very good rule from those InDesign guidelines is not to offend
the regulars, because in that way you are minimizing the chance you
will get an adequate reply to your question.

Just an idea.

Discs will be around for a long time yet.

People that use forums like this assume that everyone out there has

ADSL is the most prevalent in the UK and some people are lucky to see

I'd rather buy a disc than have to spend hours downloading a film only

If your AMP remote is a learning remote then just program any of it's
buttons to be the on/off of your SB3.

I programmed most of the SB3's remote keys into my Yamaha AVR remote to
eliminate the need for the second remote (SB3 remote). Though, to be
fair, I only use the SB3 for Internet Radio, so that made it a bit
simpler to program & operate.:)

And I think many are overlooking the advances in flash memory cards as
a "physical media type". It won't be too much longer before we are
buying 200gb (possibly into tb's) memory cards at reasonable prices
that we can place into our wallets and take anywhere.

It will happen, but not for many more years. The BW is available now to
make it a breeze(fiber to the home), its still just too expensive
becuase of the infrasture investment that needs to be made. That is why
DSL and Cable modems have been successfull-- they work on the already
existing infrastructure. I have COMCAST cable service with streaming
service they call ON DEMAND. It streams audio and video over the cable
to my box. Even HD content in 1080i with Dolby Digital 5.1. So,
actually, I think they could even do 1080p and uncompressed 5.1 audio
(I'm guessing it would take twice as much more BW?). They are just
waiting for more widespread adoption of 1080p before they begin to
offer it (and probably charge more for it!) I'd say its still several
years away, so that brings us back to my original point. Why wait?
Players were as low as $299 last Christmas. I got my Blu Ray player for
free with purchase of the TV last month. I bet now we'll see blu ray
players under $200 by summer and maybe even a $129 unit by Christmas...

Its available today in much of the developed world.
Not in most of the US because of monopoly telco resistance. Altho
Verizon is rolling out FIOS (fiber to the house) which is available
today in many areas. Korea and Japan are way ahead of the US in
broadband availability, faster and cheaper than we see in the US.

Your "soon" argument is just a question of timing. One can argue about
when 'soon' will be. There is no argument that very fast broadband is
coming and when it comes, the disk is dead.

I'll add too that perhaps I'm a bit biased in my thinking because I

look at perfect uncompressed 1080i HD imagery on a daily basis and I'd
still argue that receiving compressed HD content from a comcast (or

But in the end, I guess it's all up to the viewer's/listener's

Re: [slim] Looks like Blu-Ray has won

2008-02-20 Thread Honva

Physical media is going to stay. More so for movies.

1. Bandwidth does not catch up fast enough. By the time you could
download a Blu-ray disc fast enough, Sony will have Blu-ray Ultra with
2TB media supporting 4320p HD format.

2. Hard Disk size not catching up fast enough. A 500G drive could only
store a dozen of movies. You also need to back up the hard drive
otherwise you eventually lose it.

3. A typical movie you will watch it once every a few years. Why
bother to use expensive online storage (Hard Disk) for it?

4. A typical movie will last about 2 hours, inserting a physical disc
is not a incovenience. (Music is different, songs last 3-4min which
would trigger a lot of disc swap.)

5. A lot of online movie purchase has "time limit". That is you can
only watch it over a something like a 24-hour period. This is very
wrong. It is more like rental only. When I buy I Blue-ray disc, I own
it and can watch it later, give it to my friends or even sell it at a
later day. It may even have investment value. (A lot of my LP
collection could be sold for a price a lot higher than when I bought
it.)

6. Physical media helps sales. A physical media on a shelf display in
shops has advertising effect and could trigger more sales.

I've deliberately avoided MS products for 10+ years.

Some of the major reasons reasons I have are for example the EU MS
antitrust-case, MS's seemingly unwillingness to listen to others than
themselves in the discussion around the Open Document Format, the
"threats" towards the free software-community regarding patents.
Furthermore MS does not seem to learn from their mistakes. A while ago
they where sued by Opera for basically the same as they got fined for
in the EU case. In general I do not approve of the closeness of their
business model. I also think that some of their informational campaigns
are giving wrong information, such as their recent anti-piracy campaign.

It's not black and white I know, but MS is a company which I do not
endorse based on my knowledge, and consequently I do not buy their

[slim] MySQL integration problem

2008-02-20 Thread Alcyon

Hi,

I am running SlimServer 6.5.5 on Windows XP SP2 on a IBM 6850 2 x 2,4
Xeon, 1Gb ECC ram with 6 drives (M/N/O/P/Q/R/S) with about 75K tracks
(1Tb). Works fine with the standard default MySQL 5.0.22 installation
on port 9092 that came with the SlimServer installation.

On the same server, I run a main MySQL 5.0.22 instance on port 3306 for
other purpose. Since I would like to run only one instance of MySQL,
I’ve tried to move SlimServer from port 9092 to port 3360, on my main
MySQL instance. Strange behavior : SlimServer scanned only 11K to 12K
tracks. Those tracks are from different drive – It seem that
SlimServer scans only part of the drive before going to the next drive.
Any idea? Thanks in advance…

PS : Sorry for my poor english :~)

I realize the limitations of 24/48 for the SB3.
What was messing me up was after I ripped an lp to my hard drive as
24/96 aiff I then compressed it with Apple Lossless.
What confused me was the SB saying it was sampled at 44.1 even though
it was 96 and compressed.

I ripped some lps to 24/48 moved them to iTunes as an Apple Lossless
then moved them over to the NAS and they played fine on the SB3.

So that's that.
Now, again I wish they'd come out with something between the SB3 and
Transporter that would do 24/96 88.2 48 44.1 and NOT include an
Audiophile grade DAC

Nice link. Especially like the quote from Bill Gates from 2005 that
HD/BR was the "last physical format"

But this thread is mostly just beliefs. You can't argue belief.

uncompressed HD? I didn't think such stuff existed. I thought its all
compressed with MPEG or other codec, from the camera on.

I've done a bit of TV studio work, and even standard TV on a production

Yes, HD is compressed (mpeg) video. It has to be. Uncompressed 24-bit
RGB images are 5.9 mb PER FRAME or 177 mbps. An HD transport stream is
19 mbps if you pull it in over the air. Cable companies compress it
further to fit more channels through the pipe, so you're actually
getting somewhere around 7-10 mpbs via Comcast.

Look at AppleTV...their movies aren't even DVD quality. Movies on disc
will be around for a long time.

[slim] Transporter II form factor

2008-02-20 Thread Suprlite7

I can see from photos in the Transporter system gallery that the
Transporter looks more the part of an audiophile component than the SB3
or the Duet but I would like to offer a recomendation. I am a convert
to Bel Canto's systems and love their sound and form factor. An
under-the-hood inspection of the Transporter shows a lot of empty space
that could be placed in a much smaller enclosure. Small is good. The
Trends TA-10.1, Peter Daniel's Patek and the Might Mouse amp among
others have busted the big is better paradigm in high end audio. Bel
Canto's Reference 1000's are award winning amps and also half (or
more!) the size of traditional amps. No longer do we need to have mass
to have superior audio. I recommend the next Transporter be 1/2 its
present size which could easily be done without sacrificing any of the
elements within.

My two cents from the peanut gallery.

[slim] Incorrect tags hanging around after rebuilding DB

2008-02-20 Thread gutted

Slimserver reports that I've got 0 tracks by 0 artists for year "199".
I guess at some point I'd incorrectly tagged something with the year
"199" and then corrected it - but Slimserver still thinks it's there
somewhere.

How do I ditch this? I tried taking a backup of and then deleting the
file "C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Cache\MySQL\ibdata1"

The file started out at something like 100MB. After Slimserver started
up and (I assume) rebuilt the database, the subsequently generated file
is around 10MB.

I thought that would probably be the end of it, but the dodgy tag still
remains :( How do I completely blitz the DB and rebuild it from
scratch?

(I've already tried using the "clear library and rescan everything"
option - this runs automatically every evening, too).

[slim] Alarm Fade-in Time

2008-02-20 Thread agbagb

SS 6.5.4 under XP Home latest

I love the Alarm feature, but wonder if there's a way of increasing
what seems to be a preset 20-fade option (i.e., it's either no fade, or
20-sec fade).

I have my alarm stream set to an Alien BBC feed, and most of that 20
seconds seems to be taken up with establishing a connection. So by the
time that actual audio appears, the fade has already reached the
user-set max volume - meaning that it's more or less the equivalent of
no fade at all, just a abrupt start of the stream.

Any way of increasing that 20 seconds (to, say 60 secs)?

I don't understand why you feel you need to rip at 96k! There's
nothing on the vinyl above 20kHz!! Even if you ripped at 48k you've
got extra room for the 'air'.

IMHO, 96k recording is ONLY worth it IF you are doing the original
recording with great microphones and a great console. After that, save
the bandwidth... you're not missing anything.

it at a party one time, where I had the DS outside with me. It was
about a 90 second process to turn the DS on, have it wake up, reconnect

then finally click the button to change the volume or the track.

Use something like mp3tag and make sure you have just v2 tags and then

(You dont mention whether you are using mp3s so this might not help at

I'm using a mixture of MP3s and FLAC (I'm gradually re-ripping all my

I'm fairly certain that all MP3s only have ID3v2 tags, although having

ID3v1 checked (along with ID3v2, and APE).

Slimserver still tells me that there are 0 tracks with 0 artists having

Re: [slim] Transporter II form factor

2008-02-20 Thread 4mula1

The Transporter isn't an amp nor does it contain any high power amp
circuits. It's job is to decode the music fed to it then feed that
into an amp to feed the speakers. It was made to a standard rack mount
width just to integrate better than the somewhat oddly shaped
Squeezebox.

I have test equipment here at work that is in a rack mount enclosure
that is mostly dead space. It's just made to be rack mountable.

Re: [slim] Transporter II form factor

2008-02-20 Thread jaysung

Hello,
Well, I agree. When opening the tp I was tempted to put something into
it just to fill the space ...
Here is what I thaught of:
- solid state hard disk and some unnecessary Slimserver overhead ;)
- Cd drive to rip or directly play music
- heavy duty copper shielding for the different components to
electrically isolate them and to be more convincing for such audio- and
electrofools as I am

Anyway the tp is not HEAVY enough Zarnash (have to pay the cables still
) says heavy equippment sounds better because of less mechanic
vibration. ;)) He argues that electric parts in motion generate
magnetic fields or such. ;-P
And well I forgot we have to have a tube in it I don't know where but
it will sound substantially better if we put a tube believe it Harmony
has prooven it. ;)

So what. Ain't the Tp a good unit of electronics?

Also if you are using MusicIP with slimserver dont forget to rescan

I'm guessing. You could add a larger screen to boot and still have a
small form factor. I don't see a necessity for maintaining an old

the case any more.

This is a hardware fault caused by a batch of bad displays that had
overheating problems.

It seemed to have been limited to some early SB3s though, this is the
first case I've seen of a Transporter affected by this.

[slim] Half the left display is not working on the Transporter

2008-02-20 Thread toca

I've just innstalled a brand new Transporter, everything worked perfect
for a couple of days, when I suddenly noticed that the left display
where cutting of the letters at the top. When I change to medium fonts
the upper text disapears.

I've done a couple of factory resets and changed the language from
Norwegian to English, without any resaults.

After the factory resets the Transporter is displaying the all the
fonts correctly, but after 10-15 minutes the left upper field displays
just fades out, and turns completly dark.

I tried unplugging the powercord, and the same thing happens,
everything works perfect for 10-15 minutes and the it changes.

Any suggestion, is it a hardware fault?

Re: [slim] Looks like Blu-Ray has won

2008-02-20 Thread zano65

Death of physical media is not only a technical problem. Imagine all the
movies in servers where you must log in to watch a particular movie.
Then imagine a new witch hunt or a puritanist regime, and all your
favourite films are not available anymore. Seems a little far out at
first, but it has already begun. Fans of Tex Avery have noticed that on
the DVD box set some episodes are missing and others have been censored
(for being "racist"). Worse, tv channels cannot air them even if they
have the tapes.
A friend bought the box set and discovered that, luckyly we have old
VHS tapes uncensored.
if you read french:
http://martinwinckler.com/article.php3?id_article=121
or http://dvdfr.solexine.fr/news/news.php?id=2597
It's only cartoons, but on the other hand if they can do it to
cartoons If things go on the way it has begun, there will be no
more dvds, no more cds, and even no more books (owned by google), we
will depend on the will of governments or big companies.
It's a little bit "Orwellian",i reckon, but maybe there's some truth in
it.
A very angry tex Avery fan,
Jean

Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface

2008-02-20 Thread ShadowWar

I agree with zingerhill and thing-fish: slow, but just about usable with
handheld skin. The DS has a very nice toggle between Overview (1 screen
shows a zoomed in view of the other) and SSR (Small Screen Rendering)
which is useful. However, the nature of the SlimServer / SqueezeCenter
interface is there's a lot to display and it means you will have to
scroll around quite a lot. One of the problems is the add-on cartridge
which fits in the GBA slot only contains 10MB of RAM - you constantly
have to let the DS Browser clear its cache. I'm waiting for the Duet
Controller...

P.S. Methane: if you're interested - Hotmail will not work.

[slim] Remote Control Feature Request

2008-02-20 Thread chale2

I have a squeezebox three and would like to be able to program my
universal remote to play my favorites on squeezenetwork [through the
SB3] more easily. The current method of navigation requires choosing
favorites, hitting the right arrow, scrolling down until you find your
favorite and then pressing play. This does not work well if you are
programming a universal remote [and requires that you see the display
on your squeezebox].

What would really help would if you could have a macro code or push the
keypad to take you to a particular favorite. For example, pressing 2 on
the remote takes you to favorite #2. This would be more reliable with
programmable remotes.

Opinions?

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2008-02-20 Thread haraldo

Some explanation of how services run in Windows, and this is valid for
all versions.

My apologies if this is already explained in this thread, too many
posts to read

The security model in Vista has been made a lot more complex than it's
ever been in Windows, way too complex in my opinion.

Some basics:
- The user that logs on has no influence whatsoever on the security
context of any of the services that run on the system.
- The user may start or stop the services, that requires a specific
right that's called Start/Stop Services.
- If you have Power User rights or Administrator rights you may always
do this (at least that's the case in Windows Server 2003)
- The security context of the service is solely defined in the Service
descriptor of the SqueezeCenter service, nowhere else!
- If the service is set to Automatic start, you don't have to login,
and you don't have to start the service to access SqueezeCenter,
Windows will start it for you

In order for SqueezeCenter to run properly, I guess it should always
run as a service, because of the incredibly complex security model. If
SqueezeCenter runs within the securityContext of the logged on user
(hence not as a service) you get into the complex setting of changing
or elevating security context, this is not necessary when running as a
service.

There is something around the OS security in Vista that I have never
found out how works. As an Administrator user, you don't have access to
many Kernel OS mechanisms, you need to escalate security context in
order to do this. Sometimes this only works from Administrator user
(Not a user with Administrator rights, but the Administrator user)
Sometimes I have found this to work, sometimes not.
I tried installing iTunes on Longhorn (which is the same code base as
Vista) and it just didn't work at all if I ran the installation from a
user with full admin rights. If I ran the installer from the
Administrator user, it worked =:-O

I have not had the opportunity to validate this, but I'm suggesting to
check out a security right that's called "Act as part of operating
system" that possibly may sort things out. I really don't know this
because this is complex stuff, but this one may be a key...

Vista is NOT easy on end users !!

I have never tried Slimserver or SqueezeCenter on Vista, because now
I've converted my home stuff to Suse Linux, and everything is
smoking

In Korea, Japan and some European countries, a high proportion of
people live in urban apartment blocks so it is economical to run fibre
to the basement. The economics are tougher to serve suburban detached
populations with smaller population densities.

Err.. that's exactly what the current remote does - press and hold the
number key to play your favourite directly with no scrolling, etc.
Even works if the SB is off.

I'm not sure if a programmable remote would mimic the exact same way of
dealing with a press-and-hold action in terms of the way it treats this
and the IR codes it emits, but it's easy to find out.

Haha, nice analogy! At least one would need the biggest bucket of
popcorn ever seen to hide in. I've never understood the whole
everything-is-best-on-a-40in-HDTV thing, nor for that matter that
things always must be shown in hi-res full color rastergraphics.

Anyway the point is, the Controller is nice, but the VFD covers basic
usability need extremely well, so I think it is a good idea to keep
it.

Yes, but still poorly edited. A 20 second look of that single page
shows there still 3 references to artwork thumb files which should be
deleted.

And really, am I the one who should be reviewing this? Is this
representative of QA there at Logitech corporation?

Re: [slim] Speaker vibrations bad for Squeezebox?

2008-02-20 Thread haraldo

Perhaps this is way beyound what you're asking :-D

Just try different things and move the SB3. I have tried a bunch of
many different things realizing that the solutions I didn't originally
believe was workable could be the best

I have had good experiences with granite plates (bought from the local
stone shop) under a CD player, never tried that under the SB, but it
doesn't cost much to try...

Another thing that I tried that really really works is setting spiked
speakers on top of a heavy granite plate (much heavier than the
speakers) and then put the granite plate on top of some kind of
rubber-like feet. This improved dynamics (in my setup) more than I
would ever have imagined and it sounds more natural... I'm NOT
kidding.

Don't ask me what's happing, but this improves the setup a lot.

iTunes plus is *not* lossless, but lossy 256.

Re: [slim] Duet ETA?

2008-02-20 Thread johndpar

Hi

Mostly the same reasons as bhaagensen.

I've been involved in the computer industry one way or another for over
30 years and I've never been impressed by anything M$ have ever done.

The cavalier attitude to product quality which M$ have demonstrated
time and time again simply does not meet my requirements for myself or
my customers.

I tolerate M$ OS and apps for business use only because I must exchange
files with other companies that use M$ products.

However, quality and reliability are everything when it comes to home
applications - no way is rebooting ever an acceptable solution - WAF
zero. I will never use a M$ based OS for any home control or
entertainment application.

M$ buying Logitech alone would be bad enough - I've always liked
Logitech mice - good quality and reliable. I fear that would change
once the bean counters at M$ apply the thumbscrews.

As for a M$ branded Duet or SB3 - how long would it be before it would
be necessary to use a M$ only server platform because of some perceived
benefit or misguided marketing directive?

I watch developments with interest and fear!

John

Say is that the new uncluttered cli-based jive interface. Looks mighty

[slim] I've lost some of my players!

2008-02-20 Thread GraemeHarrison

I run slimserver on a mac running OS10.5.1. I have 4 x SB3's and 1 x SB2
and everything has been great and stable for years (I even had an
original Slimp3). 2 days ago, I tried upgrading from 6.5.4 to 7.0 in
order to solve an OS10.5 issue and was then prompted to update firmware
on the players. I did so on three of them but then the music library
showed totally empty on the players although I could see it in
Slimserver/squeezecenter. Then the players disappeared from the
software. I then reloaded 6.5.4 to see if this helped and I can still
not see any players and all of the updated players show empty.

BUT: the players that I didn't update have the full music library in -
running under either 7.0 or 6.5.4. All players are showing firmware
81.

What do I do now as I can only access squeezenetwork and not
slimserver, from most of my players!

HELP!

Thanks
Graeme

Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request

2008-02-20 Thread chale2

I am in Squeeze Network Beta and trying to map some of my favorites to
individual number buttons on the remote control. Right now if I push
and hold #1 or 2, two of my favorites start playing [which I didn't
program unless I did it accidentally]. If I hold any of the other
numbers on the remote, there is a message FAVORITE #X NOT DEFINED. I
checked the squeezebox documentation but do not see any reference about
how to define each number key to a favorite. It seems that there is a
way to do this but I just cannot find a reference. I tried playing one
the favorites I want to bookmark to a number on the remote and holding
the corresponding number down but this does not work

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Multiple artwork for one album - possible??

2008-02-20 Thread JJZolx

It was a good question.

How do you so painstakingly test software for months and months on end
and not bother to look at the documentation? Or does everyone just
naturally accept that good documentation is a distant, secondary
concern and that corrections will come whenever it's convenient?

The Transporter was designed with audiophiles and the higher end market
in mind. To that end, the device needs to be X inches wide and just as
important rack mountable. Additionally and more important in my mind,
the Transporter needs to be big enough to keep from being pulled off
the shelf by the weight of all the heavy audiophile type cables I have
plugged into the back! I know it is just my opinion, but the
Transporter is about as small as it can be still satisfying the
audiophile crowd.

Please keep it the same or make it larger (more room for mods for
people into that)! I would not want to come home to find my new smaller
Transporter off its shelf and hanging by the interconnects behind all
the other equipment!
