Strange you all are still having issues.. The latest nighty of

[slim] Is there a way to rename favourites?

2008-02-23 Thread . brum

Hi,

I have gotten used to saving my own Tune in URL Internet radio
stations as favourites, in order not to have to do the tuning in
manually every time (there might be a better way to saver them?).

Some radio stations' streams have really nondescriptive names, so I'd
like to rename the favourite but all I found in the web UI was the
possibility to change the order. Am I missing something, or is it not
possible change the name?

[slim] Should Internet radio AAC stream work?

2008-02-23 Thread . brum

Hi,

For bandwidht vs. quality reasons I'd rather use AAC streams when
provided by the Internet radio station, but it doesn't seem to work. So
far I've only tried with one (Radio Paradise), so I'm wondering whether
it at all should work? My SB3 gives an cannot connect to server kind
of error message, while at the same location the same URL plays fine
witj Foobar2000.

The example URL is
http://www.radioparadise.com/musiclinks/rp_128aac.m3u.

There is a way by manually changing a config file but this problem has
been resolved in SC7. In SC7 you can give all favourites your own
friendly name. I would say; wait for about a week or so until SC7 is

Re: [slim] Range of selectable volume

2008-02-23 Thread mooblie

Sorry to raise an old thread, but it seems a relevant starting point.

I am using SqueezeCenter 7 and two Squeezebox 1s (firmware 40) with the
0-100 volume control. However, the relationship between the volume
setting and perceived volume output seems all wrong to me:
(a) not much happens as you drop from 10040, output drops from 0 to
-10dB
(b) reasonable control between 4010, output drops from -10dB to -25dB
(c) far too coarse control between 100, output drops from -25dB to
-50dB

I have measure the output and plotted this in the attachment, where the
(linear) volume control setting from 0-100 is shown against the (log)
audio level output from 0 to -50dB - see Actual Respose line.

You can see that, whereas it should be a straight line relationship in
this lin/log chart, it is actually a curve, indicating the volume
control drives the control voltage of the voltage-controlled gain
section linearly, whereas it should be driven logarithmically.

I would suggest that (as shown by the Preferred Response? line) the
output should drop by 0.5dB for each volume step - linearly throughout
the range.

Is there a plug-in to fix this, or would a software update be needed?
Having only 100 values, a simple look-up table would suffice, surely?
Any volunteers? Anybody agree with me? :-)

Re: [slim] Double Listings in Albums

2008-02-23 Thread DrNic

A common problem I'm afraid. A search of the forum would probably turn
up a few related threads. This will undoubtably be a tag issue. iTunes
is a bit sneaky and adds its own tags - particularly inserting Disc
number tags on compilation albums. I would recommend examining the tags
carefully in a program such as MP3Tag - and delete all itunes comments,
and disc number (unless you want that!) Also ensure you don't have
multiple versions of ID3 tags.
Once you are sure you have clean tags then do a rescan of the library.
Of course if you must use itunes as your library manager you may have
to stop it re-writting the tags.

It will need transcoding so it will not work through Squeenetwork but
through Slimserver/SqueezeCenter.

The format is nto support by Slimdevices as standard so you will need
to add new conf entries. I suspect it will work if you put in the
changes for AACplus (see the Wiki) and then add audio/aac to the
custom-typs.conf.

Just checked - the AACplus wiki entry already has the changes needed to
support AAC and it works.

However use the proper URL and not the playlist file
http://scfire-nyk-aa01.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1049

The name of songs will appear on the display but because the display
routine is not aware of the transcoding, the titles are excessively
delayed - with slow speed (64K) AAC+ streams the delay can be 5 minutes
! I suspect it will be only 1-2 minutes for 128kbitsstream.

Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request

2008-02-23 Thread chale2

Thanks. I didn't realize I wasn't clear. I will try to be as explicit
as possible:

My questions:
1) It is not clear how to set up favorites to the remote buttons [1-9]
in the instructions. No where can I find in the instructions it stated
that holding button 2 on the remote will play #2 in your favorites in
squeezecenter for example. This is what I want explained.
2) Does this differ based on whether you are logged into squeezenetwork
versus squeezecenter [slimserver]? For example, if you use
squeezenetwork [which I do mostly] and press #2 on the remote, will it
take you to #2 on your squeezenetwork favorite.

My concern is I am not getting a consistent result when I press and
hold a number key down whether I am in SC or SN. What my goal is to
push a number key on the remote and have it automatically start playing
a specific favorite in SN without having to use the arrow keys to
scroll. I am using the beta of SN/SC and was trying to also help debug
if there is an issue.

Hope I am clearer here.

Well, I only use the SN portion of my SB3 (no computer streaming) so
there may be differences in this remote usage between SC SN.
However, I believe it works as follows:

You press favorites on remote, then pressing a number on the remote
is ALPHA. So if you wanted your favorite station jazz.fm you would
press the number 5 button (5 = J-K-L). When you reach the favorite you
want you must press play. The number buttons are basically search
shortcut buttons, not play buttons. After J-K-L it will look for
anything with a 5 (numeric).

The problem with this is that (currently) your SN favorites are
arranged in the order in which you selected them as favorites, not
alphabetically. You can move them around via the SN web interface to
be alpha if you choose. I edited the station name of all of my
favorites adding a genre for easier searching categorizing, then
organized them by that genre them. Ex: 181.fm Smooth Jazz became Jazz
181.fm Smooth Jazz

This way all of my genres are alphabetical and searching is easier, I
just press 5 for J (jazz). SN is supposed to be adding
editable/customizable sub favorites categories for our use so we can
organize our favorites in say 10 separate folders as we see fit. For
me making 10 different genre folders would make a LOT of sense and is
long overdue. But this is just a future plan for SN, not available now
even in beta.

Hope this helps.:)

Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request

2008-02-23 Thread chale2

I see now! If I press Favorite and then the number buttons in beta SN
this works as you state. However if I press and hold a numeric button
[again in beta SN] it says Favorite #X NOT DEFINED. How do you define
it?

My primary reason is for wanting to program a universal remote so I can
program a press of number 2 for example to play a particular favorite.

I think the way most people instinctively use remotes is they get very
quick and want to do it without having to look at the squeezebox
display. If you know your favorite at number 1 will take you right to
your favorite that you want to hear, then you shouldn't have to scroll
and press the minimum number of buttons possible.

OK I just did this on SC7:

1. Check my favorites list is empty.
2. Go to an album and hit add to favorites
3. Repeat for another album
4. Check the favorites list - I now have 2 defined
5. Press and hold 1 on the remote - the first favorite starts playing.
6. Press and hold 2 on the remote - the second favorite starts
playing.

This is default, out of the box, SC7 functionality. I can't comment on
how that differs from SN as I don't use it.

However, this does *not* replace the Squeezebox Classic as I believe

I see now! If I press Favorite and then the number buttons in beta SN
this works as you state. However if I press and hold a numeric button

If just using the learn function of a universal remote (remote's
placed facing each other, each IR signal is learned as each individual
button) then you can only emulate what is available via the SB remote.

If you want to get into macros (universal remote remembers a sequence
of IR commands) that's a different story and can be complicated but
doable.

[slim] WMA on SB3 natively?

2008-02-23 Thread slutz

Hi!

Everywhere I read that the SB3 supports WMA natively. Why do I also
find the information that I need ffmpeg on Linux for SB2/3 and why is
my SB3 NOT able to play WMA without ffmpeg?
What does it mean that WMA is supported natively if I still need
ffmpeg?

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Double Listings in Albums

2008-02-23 Thread brucegrr

As your library grows it is vitally important to have a single tagging
format. If you download much music you'll find a variety of tagging.

Are you using cover art? As a separate filed cover.jpg or is it
embedded? If you have BOTH of these then you can end up with duplicate
entries.

I use MP3tag to tag my files. When I first started I have thousands of
files to fix. Eventually, I cleaned it up and everything shows up like
it should.

A general observation..it seems Itunes is half the problem
people have with tags.

Re: [slim] WMA on SB3 natively?

2008-02-23 Thread Siduhe

From the wiki:

wiki Wrote:

 Native or Transcoded?
In the Slimserver/Squeezebox world, this can be an important
difference. The various models of Squeezebox can handle different file
types internally, so given (for example) an MP3 file can decode it into
music within the box. Other file types can't be handled within the
Squeezebox and are transcoded, i.e. decoded in the Slimserver into
another format that the Squeezebox does know how to handle (see also:
Transcoding). SB2/3 natively handles MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and WMA
(except WMA Lossless): earlier models just MP3. See HardwareComparison.

Another significant difference for a Squeezebox is that you can
fast-forward or rewind with a format that can be played natively, but
not one that is being transcoded.

Are you trying to play WMA Lossless by any chance? You also need a
hardware player (but I see you have an SB3) - you're not trying to use
Softsqueeze as well are you?

If you are still getting a message about ffmpeg, check your file
conversion settings aren't set to transcode WMA into another format.

support mms transport and not http.

I have a recollection that aome radio stations (espcially talk

WMA voice is supported, as long as it's an HTTP station.

Re: [slim] Audioengine 5

2008-02-23 Thread Mark Lanctot

I am interested in either the A2 or the A5 and I took the opportunity to
listen to them in a shop today.

The A2 speakers are tiny, no bigger than most computer speakers. BUT -
I didn't find they sounded particularly bad compared to the A5. They
sounded a little boxy and constrained compared to the A5, but not
bad. Certainly loud enough, certainly enough bass - I found they were
bassier than the A5. You definitely don't need a sub with these
things.

Now of course the A5 sounds effortless. I did find their input level
trip point a little high, I had to really crank the input volume to get
them to turn on. This would mean the Squeezebox alarm fade-in wouldn't
work, it would only kick in when the volume reached near maximum so it
would start late.

On the other hand, there was a bunch of stuff on the A5 that I'd be
paying for but couldn't use - USB charging jack, secondary inputs, 120
VAC power outlet. And that bright blue LED would be distracting in a
dark bedroom.

I found the A2 finish better than the A5, a glossy piano black, very
smooth, much like the SB3 black plastic and the remote plastic. The
A5s looked cheaper actually, a matte plastic, some fit and finish
blemishes and not the nice finish the A2 comes in.

The back panels on each are very impressive, quite solid and with a
considerable amount of connection options. The two speakers are
connected together with conventional speaker wire, meaning you could
use a custom length. The A2 has a metal volume knob on the back, the
A5 a plastic volume knob on the front which feels cheap.

Obviously I'm leaning towards the A2. I could be very happy with that
sound actually. The A5 sounded better - but with a couple of caveats.

I may not be able to justify the price difference between the A2 and
the A5.

Re: [slim] Should Internet radio AAC stream work?

2008-02-23 Thread bpa

It is transcoded into Flac. The display routines show the format of the
original stream as that will reflect the actual quality.

The way AAC and AAC+ is handled is a bit unusual but it enabled the
Song titles to be displayed.

There is little point in saying a 64kbps AAC+ stream is a Flac stream -
the quality will not be there and the user may then complain that the
Flac stream is not working well.

I, personally, would love to see this feature added if we can find an
elegant user interface for it. How would you expect this to work?

Hold a button on the song to be moved and then use the scroll wheel to
find a new location in the playlist to drop it?

[slim] Security Issues with WPA

2008-02-23 Thread cliffo

Hi All,

I used to have issues running the SB2 when I set my Netgear DG834GT
router to WPA security. The SB2 would drop out every few minutes then
reconnect to the router.

The SB2 worked fine with WEP or no security.

I've just upgraded to a Billion 7404VGP and the SB2 has the same
issues. Works flawlessly on WEP security but regularly disconnects when
using WPA setting.

Is this a known issue or is there anything I should be looking at in my
settings?

Regards,
cliffo

Re: [slim] Squeezebox review: Laptop Logic

2008-02-23 Thread simonsays

Great feedback, and like I stated - there is the option for regular
ethernet connection.

BUT, this is marketed as a wireless streaming device - so that's what
the article is geared towards.

I run high security on my laptop, router NAT, and Yoggie Pico security
device - port forwarding MUST occur for me. If you are not worried
about firewall settings, that's your data. Not mine.

And you're right, I should restate on lossy vs. Lossless transfer,
it's what I meant, and realize I should change that comment.

No CD in the box is a welcomed addition, and completely understood
relying this product makes use of an active network - you probably 99%
have access to an internet connection as well to download it. It isn't
bad, it was just noted.

While it can process 5.1 files, it will not output 5.1 through an audio
file that isn't encoded with it (as a standalone processor might). I'll
make note that you need to have a 5.1 DTS reciever and 5.1 WAV + flac
file to take advantage of this.

Taking advantage of the slimserver network and utilizing a seperate
computer in sub. for a squeezebox was awesome! I used the Asus EeePC as
written here:

IMHO you should state in your review that you're running an unusual
set-up with a h/w firewall just for the laptop. You leave the
impression that every user will have experience you had.

Setting up an SB takes 2 mins tops, 1 minute is unpacking it.
