Thanks for the input guys. I have borrowed an iPhone to try iPeng out.
It really is very cool though it is a little bit slower than the SBC.
This might be dumb of me, but I can't seem to figure out how to control
the SB receiver's volume though in iPeng. The iPhone's volume control
changes the ringer volume when in iPeng mode.

It's a webapp, so the native volume control doesn' t work (good hint
for the native app...) so you have to go to the NowPlaying screen and
tap the artwork. You will get an overlay with a volume control then.
Please note that even though that looks like the native control, you
have to click on th new volme position instead of dragging the handle.

Re: [slim] How to avoid the 'click' when a track starts

2008-04-01 Thread bloemert

I run slimserver on windows-XP.
I have changed the sound to none following the suggested advice, but
the problem still exist.

I found something related to my problem in:
http://forum.inguzaudio.com/index.php?showtopic=3pid=138st=20#entry138

It stated that:
The loud click at the start of the song is due to -wavo sending the
WAV file header (a hundred bytes or so) and Squeezebox interpreting
that as playable data... without -wavo, ony the raw data is sent.
Unfortunately with only sending the raw data, Squeezebox doesn't have
any way to tell the bit-depth, and assumes it's 16 even if you have
InguzDSP output 24-bit data... hence the white-noise experience...

But I have tried different settings in the convert.conf file, but
without success.

So if someone has another suggestion, it would be greatfull
And who knows what are the possible settings and meanings of these
settings in convert.conf

Ah.. that's the one everybody gets wrong the first time. I's one of the
features Apple has documented badly (is there ANY Apple documentation on
USING the iPhone??? I only found it in the developer's docs myself).
You have to use two-finger scrolling for that (touch the screen with
two fingers at at time).
Unfortunately it's slow as hell but it's the only way Apple allows for
scrolling within parts of the screen and I want the controls to be
visible on that screen.

Re: [slim] PS3 webbrowser and 7.0

2008-04-01 Thread oreillymj

The PS3's browser is notoriously flaky. The OS only has 256mb to run in,
and reports of hangs on relatively small pages have been cropping up on
PS3 related forums. I also understand that the Netfront browser's
Javascript engine isn't great, although it has been improved in FW2.20.
For some reason Sony would rather stick to this obscure browser than use
a PPC Firefox port. It's probably due to security. Any bugs in Firefox
are wide open for targeting by hackers, which would open the PS3 to
hackers.

Stick to a PC.

issues to that. Memory is limited in the SB3, with MP3, FLAC, Ogg and

anything else (I seem to remember reading that Ogg was the last to go
in and it was a tight fit). There is also the question of licensing. I
don't know the ins and outs of the ALAC format, but there would
probably be legal issues if it was done in the SB3.

Interesting thread, I didn't realise transcoding was required for ALAC
sources.

No legal complication, ALAC is in the firmware for Sonos devices

[slim] Problem Connecting Duet to Music source

2008-04-01 Thread Dav28

Hi Please can you help. I've just received my Duet and am having
problems connecting. My apologies if this has been covered before.

My set-up

I have a BT modem connected to a Linksys wireless router. My PC is
connected by ethernet cable to the modem. I am running Windows Vista.
Squeezecentre 7.0

When I start-up the controller I can select the receiver no problem, I
then have to select my music source. The screen shows my PC and
squeezecentre. Yet when I select them I cannot connect to either of
these. What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks

The only things I can think of that would have any effect are:

Bitrate limiting (should be off)
ReplayGain/SmartGain (also off)
Digital volume control (should be fixed)

I've listed these in order of impact, most significant first. Bitrate
limiting will cause an mp3 transcode which is obviously not good. The
other two relate to the digital volume control. In the first case,
replay gain will often cause the levels from the SB to be lower than
the original CD which can screw up a/b tests, although that's really a
perception thing rather than reality. The digital volume control (also
used by the replay gain functionality) will cause bit loss if it's
turned down significantly, but assuming you have to attenuate somewhere
between the server and the speakers it may (IMHO) not be a bad place to
do it. YMMV and all that :)

Apple don't license anything, which is why only iTunes can encode ALAC
right now. Everybody pretty much uses the same open source ALAC decoder
instead.

Sounds to me like it's the memory limitation more than anything.

By current playlist I mean whatever's showing in Now Playing. Could be
an album, a playlist, a random bunch of tracks, whatever. So you don't
need to do anything special, just play the album and hit repeat twice

1. Stop SC
2. Edit the file favorites.opml in Playlist directory - use Wordpad if

3. Each entry will probably be on a single line - delete the line you
don't want.
4. Save
5. Start SC.

[slim] Problem: SB Duet and Server Power Control

2008-04-01 Thread Ventus

Hi,

I just received my Duet in Germany and I am quite happy with it.

But I have problems finding a solution to remotely power on and off (or
hibernate) my Windows XP machine that I use for running Squeezecenter. I
would like beeing able to power on and off the machine via the Duet
Controller.

My investigations lead to Slimdevices Server Power Control Plugin
(PowerCtrl from
http://adrianonline.wordpress.com/projects/squeezebox/).
After installation it shows up in the Squeezecenter plugin list.
But I cannot find any new menu entry on my Controller as described in
the instructions for Squeezebox.

Has anybody managed to get the plugin working with the Duet Controler?

Or does anybody know a solution to send a magic packet packet from the
Duet Controller to the network to WOL my computer (WOL is working fine
from other wireless devices...) and/or to trigger a hibernation or
shutdown skript on the computer via the Duet Controller?

By the way, does anybody know anything regarding the settings
Advances Applet installer menu on the controller.

Many thanks
-Markus

The last one is the only one I know the answer to. See

But now that I think about it, that is probably the solution you need
for the other questions. Check out the RetroBrowser applet, which gives
you the plugin interface you need on the Controller.

I agree, I cant hear any substantial difference between my

Replay gain has a bug that could end up in digital clipping.

A simple test would be to try to send an dts or dolby digital stream,
if the bits are altered by the server or SB3 the outcome would be white
noise.

Get a ripp of the same music made by somebody else to rule out your
ripping setupp.

I would also avoid ripping on a laptop off any kind, i've never seen a
good slimline drive (there may be such a thing but i never seen one).
To me many EAC is so slow treads seems to indicate use of laptop's
for ripping.

I'll watch this with interest as i'm afflicted by this audiophilia bug.

Another angle could be that the SB is on it's last leg ? ready to

Re: [slim] Output via analogue digital?

2008-04-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

The headphone output is internally connected to a small amp chip and
connecting it to another amplifier makes for poor-quality sound.

Only connect headphones directly to it. See

Re: [slim] BBC Podcats Via Alien BBC, Does it work?

2008-04-01 Thread bpa

The workaround to get WMA station to play is as follows.

1. Goto Settings/Advanced/Filetypes
2. Change Windows Media - Windows Media native to disabled and then
click apply.

This stops decoding in the SB and so SC will handling all WMA streams
before passing them on as Flac to SB.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-01 Thread JimC

All:

I ran across a similar issue while I was working with a journalist in
Denmark. We had problems with his Linksys WR350N and the SB
Controller. By switching from WPA2 to WPA encryption, the problem
disappeared.

For those of you experiencing the problem, if you are using WPA2, would
it be possible for you to switch to WPA to see if the problem is
resolved? Please report your findings here.

Also, if you can run your SB Receiver in a wired configuration, you can
use the bridged mode (see the Duet User Guide '*here*'
(http://www.slimdevices.com/su_documentation.html) for details) to test
that the Controller is good and that the issue is with connecting to
your router/AP. If the Controller works reliably in bridged mode, then
we'll need to troubleshoot around the router/AP.

[slim] New Duet Pro prototyp !

2008-04-01 Thread Louise Straus

Just came back from Taiwan today, wher I was able to visit Slimdevice
production partner Luegen Corp in Whenzou.
Due to some unexpectet circomstances, I was able to see a prototp of
the new Duet Pro.
As fare as i was able to see, Duet Pro has a color Display on the
Reciver witch is twice as big as the one on the new duet Controler.
Also it apers to have internal batterie, so it can be plug to mobil
devices like portable Hifi.
Unfortuatliy I was not able to see more and locals were not realy
interessted to discuss details.
New Duet pro could be e real alternativ for SB3!
We wil see...

The Mp3 changed to Proxyed streaming and WMA Native changed to disabled
seems to have done the trick. (See Above posts)

I can now get BBC Podcasts and wma stations.

Thank you so much.

Is there a way to make these basic settings more easily known to other

[slim] Control all receivers at once with Duet

2008-04-01 Thread BrockStone

Apologies if this info is available somewhere, but I don't have ready
access to a Duet.

From what I understand, the remote controls each receiver in turn, so
you can put different streams on each receiver. If you want to have
the same stream going to all 5 receivers, is there a play this on ALL
receivers option that is easily accessible?

Cheers

Re: [slim] BBC Podcats Via Alien BBC, Does it work?

2008-04-01 Thread bpa

The settings are stopgap workarounds because you have a bigger problem -
no router in your local network. Usually people in a similar situation
will then ask why can I not play radio when the PC is turned off or I
can't use Squeezenetwork. So I'd be loathe to recommend the settings
as a fix in the first instance for USB modem users.

The Wiki is available for users to add their advice. I think probably
a new section in the Networking - highlighting problems (and the
workarounds) that a user will have when using a USB modem might be
useful.

The simplicity of the SB belies the complexity of the systems and
components that need to be working properly. Applying workarounds
rather than solving the underlying issue may be storing up problems for
the future.
