No.
BTW it also does not work for a lot of other applications with me.
iTunes, for example, sometimes works and sometimes does not. QuickTime

I'm confused. All the way through this thread no-one has suggested just
looking at the scanner.log file for the files to be identified. In fact,
in several of the replies, it is implied that this would be an
enhancement to the present program.
How do you tailor the scanner.log report? Additionally, is there a
beginners guide to understanding what is in the report file? I can't
find any documentation about it.

well, I for one tend to stay away from certain threads. I don't feel

have a look on the wiki. If it's not there, basically setting
scan.scanner to
DEBUG will show you the files being read, and if you get errors then you
know which files are involved.

If some third party were to come up with a log parse for creating fancy

Their server seem to have connectivity problems. SC/SB doesn't get an

I feel your pain. I have a similar situation. My car began playing up
recently and the mechanic asked me if i could drive it to the local
garage. No freaking way! what makes is double impossible is that its
currently hooked up to my trailer. Rubbish mechanic, he should have
been able to fix it by simply sending me an email. Stupid thing is that
it should work because the fuel tank is 70% full and my other car works
just fine. Simply unacceptable. later on today im going to drive it
into the ocean. That will teach it. Life's so unfair.

What I mean is using an iPod touch to store the music, with an Alpine
X1 head-unit with its iPod dock and "Full Speed" connectivity. You have
full control over the iPod via its color screen, and as it also keep the
iPod charged you can stash the iPod away. And the touch can sync with
tunes over WiFi when you get home.

1. if i knew which albums it was i would. i could probably figure it
out using winamp or some tagging program, and i probably will do just
that. but its a pretty time intensive matter and it doesn't address
the underlying issue. (and as i mentioned, the tags aren't really

2. while "fixing" my tags will sort out MOST of this issue, it won't
address the other scenarios, (some of which we can't anticipate b/c we
don't know what they are), so the best course of action is to put some
kind of doublecheck into the system.

Re: [slim] Server message: "Your squeezecenter settings are available for the world to see

2008-07-17 Thread Siduhe

Sorry to hear you're having problems, but I'm not sure this is a
Squeezecenter generated error - certainly that isn't a wording I have
ever seen before. And Squeezecenter isn't capable of overwriting file
or track names, or do you mean that there's a kind of pop-up message
which fills up the screen? Can you post a screenshot?

Important question - have you tried to open Squeezecenter for remote
access (eg so you can play your music from work), or have you opened up
any ports in your router at all (if running wireless). If so, and you
haven't properly secured those ports, there are ways that people can
search on the internet to find your Squeezecenter instance and access
it. Not going to list them here, but it is possible. It may be that
someone is having some fun at your expense.

Either way, you need to secure your computer - fast. I would shut down
SC, disconnect whatever is running SC from your network and run a full
virus scan. Then you need to close down whatever ports you have opened
up in your router to the outside world (assuming you are connecting via
a router) so at least your system is secure.

If you really want to open up your Squeezecenter to remote access (and
it's not really designed with this in mind, so there is an inherent
risk if you decide to to do this) you should really do this via an SSH
or VPN, see 'this long discussion'
with some useful tips.

I note that the wiki is now giving instructions to achieve remote
access without mentioning any of these issues - serious error IMHO and
I'll do some editing.

Yes it would, but it's a matter of priorities unless you have unlimited
number of development resources.

You could focus on implementing fancy new features which 80% of the
users appreciate or you could focus on inconsistency/error handling of
special cases which 5% of the users have problem with. If the number of
development resources are limited, I would prefer if the focus is on
something which most users want.

The scanner.log file should work for the 5% which actually have problem
with scanning files.

The percentages mentioned above are just my own guesses, so the 5%
might be 30% but I'm pretty sure it isn't 80%.

MrSinatra;320524 Wrote:

This needs more investigation, I think we probably need some case where
it is reproducible. In my library the number matches perfectly.

The stats on top of the browse pages lists the total number of tracks
in the currently selected item. So if you select an album it displays
the number of tracks in the album. However, I can agree that it should
display all songs if it you just enter the "Albums" menu because all
tracks should be related to either a real album or to the "No Album"
album.
Could it be that "No album" tracks aren't included in the stats shown
when you enter the Albums menu ?
Could it be that internet radio stations are included in the main stats
but not in the Albums stat ?

You could install the Database Query plugin which makes it possible to
list statistics directly from the database without the rest of
SqueezeCenter logic involved. If you do this, you can go into
"Extras/Database Query/SlimServer Statistics" and look at the various
numbers.

Register a bug report unless you have already done so and provide
enough information to reproduce the problem if you like someone to look
at the bug report in more detail.

i hear what you are saying, but i respectfully disagree. bells and
whistles are not more important than accurately accounting for all the
music one has.

to put it another way, the pinto might have had some great options, but
even if only 5% of them were blowing up, you can bet thats what the
engineers focused on.

the further problem is we have no idea how many people are affected b/c
like i was, most people affected are probably unaware of it. and the
issue could have multiple causes, not just the one affecting me.

this pgm is a music server first and foremost. i consider accurate
accounting of all tracks to be a fundamental and primary criteria for
it.

erland;320536 Wrote:

here's a question for you:

in the webUI, go to home -> albums, and compare the number of artists
in the summary at the bottom to the number of artists in the settings
status page.

is it the same?

i think that might be a separate bug if not, somehow related to various
artists.

i don't follow you. the summary stats are at the bottom (as you see in

No its not the same.
Could be related to various artists, but it could also be related to
Composers, Conductors and Band which I've choosen to to show.

The Artists menu match though, so something is going on which I don't
understand at the moment. It might be some logic behind it but someone
has to check in the code to see what it is supposed to do.

There is probably some filtering going on in the Albums menu so all
songs aren't shown, someone needs to look in the code to see what it is
supposed to do.

Yes, but they are stored in the same table, so if there is a bug

[slim] Question about tagging

2008-07-17 Thread ewreck

Got squeezebox duet for a week now and i am very happy with the
product.
Got a question about searching for artists. If i scroll to for instance
Killing Joke i see all albums i got of Killing Joke, but there is also
an album of Metalica listed under Killing joke. Now i know that
Metallica has a album with covers and one is of killing Joke.
Is it normal behaviour for the squeezecentre to list this song also
under Killing Joke. The cover also show up under Metallica's cover
album though.

[slim] Please Help: Problems after downgrading to 7.0.1 (pause and music database)

2008-07-17 Thread Kaizen28

Hi All

I have recently downgraded from 7.1 (whatever Tuesday's build was) back
to 7.0.1 - 19705 and I'm encountering a number of problems:

1) If pause is selected from the controller or web interface, or if the
SB3 is switched off, a "connection failure" message is displayed on the
controller and the SB3. The track that was being played returns to the
beginning.

2) The controller is missing the option of browsing my music folders.
This may be related to the next item.

3) Despite rescanning my music library (which resides on a NAS) I still
have a library which shows 0 artists. I've watched the scan and all
seems to go well but on a restart all is gone.

My configuration is:

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 19705 @ Wed May 14 19:43:37 PDT 2008 -
Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Server IP address: 192.168.2.101
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

Platform Architecture: 586

Model: Squeezebox v3
Firmware: 88

Model: receiver
Firmware: 23

I think the controller is running 2448.

This runs under Windows XP with SP3. I uninstalled 7.1 before
installing 7.0.1.

Anyone with any thoughts? Please.

Hi all,

A year (or maybe two) ago I run into the Squeezebox Plus, a heavily
modified SB3 in a new enclosure.

I consider buying one, but now I can't find the website of the maker
anymore...

Does anybody now if the SB plus is still made and sold?

Best regards,

Typically the firmware version is tied to the SC version, so when you
download/install a new copy of SC you'll get the appropriate firmware.
In general you shouldn't have to worry about it, it'll keep itself at
the right version.

Re: [slim] Anyone who is a bit bored.

2008-07-17 Thread schiegl

Hi,

while "polishing" my music library - and hence my SC installation - i
stumbled across this "Use of uninitialized value in right bitshift"
error message when scanning.

I've narrowed it down to three problem mp3 tracks (creating 74 warning
entries!!!). I tried various methods to rewrite/fix/repair the mp3
header using foobar->utils->rebuild-mp3-stream, mp3trim, and a few
more.
This fixed 2 of the 3 files, one track remains which responsible for 66
lines of log alone (priority "warning" despite the fact scanner.* is set
to output only error messages)

Did anybody find a working solution to get rid of those messages - or
even better to fix the problem (mp3-frame-tags)?

thanks!

I'll attach my track to 'Bug 8070'

kind regards,
Markus

Actually it was suggested way back in 'post #14'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49429&page=2). But for
a lot of readers it just got lost in all the other noise.

Also, even though I used the DOS dir command in my example, and
MrSinatra has followed suit, those who find the command line too
prehistoric can always use a gui tool, like the [execrable] file search
function in Windows Explorer, which gives the total number of files
found on the status bar.

Any other way to start the update without doing this? If not, could

[slim] Scanning doe new or updated music--

2008-07-17 Thread Zevs

Hi!

Why isn't it possible as an aoption to specify a directory to scan when
one one wants to update ones's music database. As it is now we have the
options of deleting all and rescan all or look for new or changed music
in the full database. Both these options take loads of time if you have
a large database. Wouldn't it be possible to add one more option, which
which would allow you to just select a specific folder and have that
scanned, retrieveing all tags, album covers and MusicIP info? It would
be so much simpler and one wouldn't have to wait a couple of hours
every time one has added an album!

Re: [slim] Problem with itunes playlists

2008-07-17 Thread wakey

Glad I searched for other instances of this problem...I recently
migrated to a new laptop as my primary Mac. Since the hard disk is
smaller than the one on my old iMac, I transferred my iTunes library to
an external disk. (I also transferred the actual Library files, not just
the music, to make sure I could use the disk with both computers during
the transition.)

Now I'm set up on the new computer. iTunes finds my library and
playlists with no problem. The SqueezeCenter, told to use iTunes and
that the files are on the external disk, has found all my songs,
albums, playlists, etc. And it can find the songs by album or artist,
and play them. But while it lists all my playlists, they all show up as
empty when I try to play them. I've rescanned the whole library and also
just rescanned the playlists a couple of times, but no dice. Help!

Re: [slim] Dont Buy!!!!! (merged to remove cross-posting)

2008-07-17 Thread Mitch G

How about trying this:

1) Load squeezecenter on one of your laptops. Be sure to emulate the
same sort of setup you have on your current server on your laptop -
e.g. if your music is stored on a separate server or NAS, have the
laptop get the music from the same place.
2) Plug it into the router and see if the problem still occurs. It
probably will.
3) Now take the router and the laptop to where the SB is and see if the
problem still occurs.
4) If the problem still occurs in that configuration, hardwire the
router the SB and see if the problem still occurs.
5) Once you have it debugged on the laptop, copy the same fixes to the
normal server and see if that fixes the problem.

On the Squeezebox, go to *Settings > Music Source > SqueezeNetwork*.
If your player isn't registered yet, you will see a PIN displayed on
the screen.

If your player is already registered with SqueezeNetwork, you will
simply be connected to your account on SN.

Can you provide some more information about what is happening? "Now it
wont work properly" is not telling me much. You may not need a PIN at
all, depending on the problem you are experiencing.

2008-07-17 Thread king of anglia

Well it's now skipping again like mad. MP3s are also a problem. The
buffer just zips down to 0% as soon as it starts.
I haven't got a clue what to do. What should I check for? Where? How?

Either in your main iTunes library folder, or in your "My Documents"

Do a search on one of the playlist names, across all of your hard

Re: [slim] Dont Buy!!!!! (merged to remove cross-posting)

2008-07-17 Thread ik632

I have two wireless routers. One is line-of-sight to the SB3 and the
other is a few rooms away. I cannot connect to the line-of-sight router
and when I do, the connection is bad and I get choppy music. When I
connect to the other (and better router) I get good music quality even
though my signal strength never gets over 70% (with the cheap close
router I can get 90% from time to time but that's rare).

I've also done testing at another friend's house. He had a Duet which
he was having issues with. We replaced some network hardware and it
worked better, though not perfect. I tried the same device at my house
and it worked great. You may have a lot of interference causing issues
as well, you can change the wireless channel in the router config.

Did something change in your hardware/software configuration? New
anti-virus software? New application? Update to a new OS or add a
service pack?

If nothing changed on your system, I'd look at new sources of
interference. Did you add a new phone (like a 2.4GHz wireless phone)?
Any other wireless devices?

Even if YOU haven't changed your wireless signal clutter, one (or more)
of your neighbors may have. Have you checked to see if any new wireless
routers have been introduced to your area? Google for NetStumbler
(Windows) or iStumbler (Mac) for software that let's you look for other
wireless routers/APs in your area and see their settings. Try to set a
channel on your router that is as far away from the routers with the
strongest signals. For example, most routers default to channel 6; you
could try 1 or 11 for no overlap with those. If there are routers at 1,
6, and 11, try 3 or 8 (whichever is furthest from the strongest router).

Re: [slim] Custom Browse - Artist\song

2008-07-17 Thread allanweinman

Thanks for your reply.

I will post my question in the 3rd party apps. I just thought that
maybe it was possible to do this without the custom browse.

What I want to be able to do is see all the songs (tracks) by a
particular Artist. As I do not always remember what album the song is
on. For example, in browse music list, choose Artist then just get a
list of all their songs (tracks) for me it does not matter what album
the music is on.

I will follow this up in the 3rd party apps group.

Thanks again,
Allan

Re: [slim] Dont Buy!!!!! (merged to remove cross-posting)

2008-07-17 Thread StigErik

I think wifi in general is a bit of a nightmare. At work we had big
problems with wifi IP phones (Cisco 7920). Even if the phones just
require a mere 100 kbps bandwidth we got choppy audio and lost
connections. To make it work at a reasonable level we ended up with no
more than 16 AP's, and that's in a 300 sq meter 3 storey building,
running on three different channels to avoid overlap between AP's. We
also had situations where we had no signal just 2 meters from an AP.

At home, all my Sqeezeboxen are wired. There is a reason for that!

So it does contain the path to my music folder - "E:\iTunes\..."

If you are looking in the library XML files, the playlists use keys to

Question: Does Album Catalogue Creator (RC5+) create a trustworthy

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

Success!

I still haven't managed to get past the 3716 error 'safety settings on
this computer prohibit accessing a data source on another domain' on my
office PC or my musicserver. I am able to access the database from the
office PC for tagging etc with no problem.

So as a last resort tried it on my laptop. I had an ODBC access
problem at first. Disabling Windows XP firewall on the server solved
this problem and I have produced my first reports! Needed a little
tidying of tags to get repots looking good.

Brilliant application!

The only slightly odd looking thing I have left is where I have both a
track and album artist defined, each track is listed twice, once for
the track artist & once for the album artist.
e.g. Loudmouth -Best of Bob Geldof & the Boomtown Rats. Some tracks
are credited to Bob Geldof (TrackArtist) & some to the Boomown Rats
(TrackArtist) but I have AlbumArtist=Bob Geldof & the Boomtown Rats!

Is there a way of defeating this so that the track is only printed once
for either AlbumArtist or TrackArtist?

I should have been more specific: Linux Ubuntu! Save your money and buy
a nice Intel Box and run Ubuntu. This way instead of the Mac you have a
better machine and can afford to buy the wife a better laptop. Its a
win-win deal!

Re: [slim] Problem with itunes playlists

2008-07-17 Thread wakey

...for iTunes to make separate playlist files. I didn't know it did
that. I guess on the Mac it just keeps them in its native Library file,
which is gibberish if opened in a text editor.

As you describe, the XML file opens with descriptions of the playlists
that reference the included tracks by number. And if I find the entry
for the track number, it has the correct path statement. I can play the
track if I navigate to it in SqueezeCenter via artist name or album
name; it's just that the playlist shows up empty.

But I've just noticed that the list of playlists in SqueezeCenter isn't
right. I've changed the name of one playlist in iTunes, but even though
since then I've run "Clear Library and Rescan Everything" more than
once, the old name keeps showing up in SqueezeCenter. So it seems like
my real problem is that I can't get SC to truly read in my playlist
info.

Re: [slim] Scanning doe new or updated music--

2008-07-17 Thread rmckay

Hi, I was looking for the same thing. I have the same problem with a
huge library that takes forever to rescan just to add one new album.
I'm running the server on a linux box and noticed another file in the
same directory as the server:
/usr/libexec/squeezecenter-scanner
After a quick look at the source code, I tried the following:

sudo -u squeezecenter /usr/libexec/squeezecenter-scanner
/music_library/new_album

It worked! The new album was added in a few seconds instead of many
minutes through the web interface full library scan.
Cheers,
Ryan

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-07-17 Thread Brian Ritchie

In my case: because every time I've tried an MIP-only scan before,
something went wrong. In particular, all my artwork disappeared.
However, that was when I could only build mixes on playlists; perhaps
it would be better now.

But while I'm doing "scan for new/changed", it makes little difference
anyway: the directory scan is fast, the MIP scan is much slower (by an
order of magnitude). Maybe next time I want to do a complete
wipe-and-scan I'll try unchecking the music folder; but not until then,
because if it screws up, I'll end up having to do a double-scan from
fresh all over again.

[slim] SB3 failed - advice solicited

2008-07-17 Thread Millwood

On of my SB3's has failed. The display is blank, and there is no audio
output. However, the slimserver thinks it exists and is working - I
can "start" music playing - but there is no output.

I've tried a hard reset (add+apply power). Nothing happens.

Any other advice?

Does slim repair out of warranty boxes?

Re: [slim] SB3 appears dead

2008-07-17 Thread Millwood

My 2.5 year old SB3 is also dead! What's going on?

Details.

No display. Still talking to the slimserver till I tried to reset is.
But when played from slimserver, no audio.

Its not power - I have two and the other works with either supply, the
failed fails with either supply.

Sigh - 2.5 years is too short for a $300 device!

Re: [slim] Performance on iPhone & iPod Touch

2008-07-17 Thread rfrost

Thanks for the heads-up about not publishing my open music server, and
thanks for re-protecting it. My error.  ;-{

First things first. I did discover that once I manage to get a stream
to the iTouch, I can then set the server (via the player-specific
settings) to pause when my client device (the iTouch) disconnects, and
to restart when it reconnects.

Second, I'm still a little weirded out by that server statement; it
does go away when I implement authentication, but I'd prefer not to do
that, as some players are too dumb to allow that.

Finally, the core question hereĀ—that Tuner, the sole legit app for
streaming on the iTouch/iPhone hiccups badly when acting as a client
from SlimServer. Still no word from Nullriver, either. I'm pursuing
this b/c I assume I'm not alone in wanting to be able to access my
music from anywhere over WiFi. (I should note that I've used both a
Nokia N800 and a PSP to do this, but neither have the horsepower to do
it well).

Thanks!

Are you streaming at the default 320kbps? You might want to try

Re: [slim] Please Help: Problems after downgrading to 7.0.1 (pause and music database)

I'd really prefer not to. I thought I had fixed most of the problems:

1) Reboot the PC
2) Rescan the library
3) Reboot the controller

During the library scan all was going well but something odd has
happened during the optimize phase. All the artists are lost. So I have
a few thousand track with 0 artists.

I can however browse my folder with the controller.

I downgraded because:
1) SuperDateTime stopped working with the Wednesday night build.
2) 7.1 has changed it's behavior which stops me browsing music folders
from my Philips Pronto
3) 7.1 introduced the problem that when pause is pressed the position
is reset to 0 within a minute.

In the log file I see the following repeated when I press pause:

Re: [slim] SB3 failed - advice solicited

2008-07-17 Thread Aztek

Hi - my SB3 failed last weekend. Similar symptoms to you but Slimserver
was not recognizing a player. In my case - my power supply partially
failed. It was only delivering a portion of the 5v to the SB3. I
could see a red light running behind the optical input but there was
insufficient power to run the SB3.

I purchased another 5v 2A regulated power supply for $26NZD and hey
presto - it worked again. Suggest you try another power supply before
sending it anywhere.

Thanks for the tip Ryan! Do you get also the covers and any MusicIP
info and all tags by doing this ? If so does anyone know if this works
also under Windows? How would the command then look? I assume one would
then do this using the run command or a command box then? Haven't had
time to test yet, but will do.

Even if this works, I still think it would be great to have this option
directly in the SqueezeCenter web page as one predefined way of scanning
your music collection, i.e. by user selected folder.
