[slim] Controller working with the Transporter
Just wondering if the Controller works 100% with the Transporter. I read around here somewhere that some functions may not work 100% ith the SB2/3/transporter If they come as a kit it would be a irresistable upgrade for me. Better yet at that price it would be nice if it is included with the purchase. Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router & Squeezebox
I also have this router, and have experienced issues playing flac files. Sometimes the file would stop in the middle, and other times it would not play a file at all. The duet controller would show that the file is playing for about 20 seconds, but there would be no audio. After about 20 seconds it would restart the file, again with no audio. When it is doing this the light on the receiver is blue. I assumed interference since I can pick up multiple networks in my house, but I can't tell for sure. Resetting either the receiver or the router would always fix the problem. If it helps at all, my Network Test settings were always very good, but I still had these problems. I fixed it (I hope) by purchasing a homeplug system and bypassing the wireless. If this router could be made to work better, it would benefit me greatly! Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router & Squeezebox
I have a Dell m90 with a Intel3945 a/b/g card. When upgrading (if you can call it that) to this router (WRT110) I noticed that large throughput (bit torrent's, CentOS iso downloads, large db dump file downloads) all cause my wireless to die and I have to manually reconnect via network manager every 5 minutes... I got dell to replace the wireless card twice, bought the N version of the card. Fought with Linksys support. They want me to RMA the device but I've found enough evidence online to support the fact that there is something wrong with the firmware...I did update the firmware, reloaded various kernel modules and libraries. I compiled my own driver. BTW when I talk to other wireless routers...no problem... /sigh the long and short of it is: don't buy this router. Not until a firmware revision past 1.0.4 comes out that addresses this. I made sure the 4th tech in India forwarded on our chat session with supporting data (this forum) to the firmware developers... maybe that'll get us some help =) -- jpastore jpastore's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18898 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49003 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Network Test: Wireless vs. Homeplug
If your homeplug adaptors are on opposing power line phases, then you may be able to get a vast improvement by making some minor changes to the wiring in your breaker panel. To figure out if they're on the same phase, first identify the breakers for the outlets that the homeplug adaptors are connected to. Then measure with an AC voltmeter across two of those breakers*. If you get about 0V, they are on the same phase (good). If you get about 240V, they are on different phases. To change the phase that a circuit is on, swap it with the wire going to the breaker immediately below it. (miniature "dual" breakers count as the same breaker here). Swap wires as needed until all circuits powering homeplug devices measure 0V against each other. An electrician can do this for you in a few minutes. * you can also figure it out visually by counting spaces, but using a voltmeter is faster and more reliable. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50082 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It would be really nice if the controller could be used to control DVD playback with Windows mediaplayer or others (WinDVD etc). Just like many keyboards have these media-keys. I'm really out of the software dev. loop since 1995 but would think a SC plug-in that emulates a SB player/receiver and forwards volume/skip/pause/play etc. requests (like the logitech keyboards do) wouldn't be too hard to implement? Re: [slim] SC7 doesn't recognize all MP3 files
Thanks, Nonreality and moley6knipe. All tags are of the same "kind" (ID3v2.4, APE etc). The issue does not appear to be related to the length of the filename/tag. All files are MP3. I wasn't sure what to make of the reference that "iTunes is a lot less tolerant of filename and path length than SqueezeCenter, I think". iTunes itself is able to read all the files in is XML library. If you mean that the iTunes import routine within SC7 is less tolerant than the general routine that scans directories looking for music files, then: This is possible. I've not tried letting SC7 loose on the directories in that way. However, I do have a theory. I'm not sure this explains 100% of the issues, but it might. It seems that the tracks that are rejected have a different capitalization of the track name than either the XML Location tag (in the iTunes XML library) or the MP3 tag. (In the examples that I've found, the XML Location tag and the MP3 tag have the same capitalization, so I haven't been able to find out if it's one or the other.) So a file might be called "Popmusikerens Vise.mp3" while the XML tag might contain the title "Popmusikerens vise" and the Location tag might be "...Popmusikerens%20vise.mp3" (note the lower-case "v"; I've left out the path). Presumably iTunes is case-insensitive in this regard, while SC7 isn't. Perhaps this is a result of running both on PCs and Macs... The longer the title, the more likely I am to have fiddled with at least one letter, and also I'm more likely to have done it for international titles (which I generally put in the capitalization of the actual language). How did this happen? I'm quite particular about my track titles as they appear in iTunes, and often I correct the capitalization after ripping the CD. Perhaps this leads to the observed behavior which you might call a bug in iTunes. iTunes shouldn't change the Location tag just because the Name tag changes (or it should change the filename, too). By the way, I do the same with album names, but here iTunes doesn't seem to fix the Location tag (at least I haven't noticed so far). Does anybody know the SC7 code well enough to say whether I'm right? If yes, one solution might be for SC7 to check a lower-case version of the Location tag against lower-case versions of the directory content (at least optionally). I realize this could be slow if people don't keep the music sorted by artist and album, but keep everything in one great big directory. If people can point me to the right place in the right script, I might just do this for myself. (I don't know how to make it properly available as an option in the web interface.) Alternatively, I suppose I might write a script to fix the capitalization of the Location tags vs the Name tags in the XML file, once and for all. I'm not quite sure whether iTunes will let this stand, though. I know there's both an XML file an an itl file with some database representation. Perhaps it would be better to fix the actual filenames. Or maybe there's a better way yet? I've not tried mp3tag yet, as I'm doing this from a Mac and mp3tag doesn't seem to exist in a Mac version. But I could do it from a Windows PC as well. I could see a Duet II in the distant Future to take the current Duet feedback into account for some product improvement. Since Logitech bought Slim Devices and they are a larger company with more R&D money could a "New" product be on the way as the Logitech Rep supposedly told the HiFi Salesman? Maybe, but it has always been Slim Devices policy not to comment on future products and Logitech is the same way. The whole idea behind the Duet was to reduce the price of the streaming unit and to make a mobile Controller available. Personally and in my opinion, I can think of no reason to release a new product remotely similar to the Duet (although I would love to see a Harmony 1000 {WiFi and IR) with the Transporter Knob on it as the successor to the Duet Controller). Could Logitech be working on a "New" product? I would bet that they are working on more then one just because that is what smart companies do. They find a market need and fill it. But again, I would say that nothing new from Logitech is going to be showing up at your HiFi Dealer next week! I personally think that the surface hasnt even been broken of what Network Media Players can do and what will be available in the next three years. And just a word on possible rumors and optimism from product reps, one of the speaker manufactures that I follow has had two new model speakers coming out for two years now and nobody has even seen a prototype yet! A friend of mine was with me when the rumor started and still hasn't bought new speakers yet because he is still waiting for those rumored speakers! If a Transporter, Duet, or Squeezebox Classic fills the need you have, I am always of the opinion to get it now and have it to enjoy now. If not, wait and see what is coming down the pike. I bought two additional SB3s just 2 months before the Duet was made public. But then one person (always the same person) kept accidentally playing a track or an album and losing the whole playlist that everyone else had been adding to (just like Fred mentioned in the original post) I also think think having a party mode would be a really great feature. Maybe the ability to add users to the remote, each user having different capabilities, menus, and features. This would also be really useful for my girlfriend using it - she finds all the different menus a bit daunting and glazes over whenever I try to show her how to use the controller. If that's not possible, a simple feature to retrieve the previous playlist (maybe they get cached for a few minutes) would get around this problem. Re: [slim] Last.fm scrobbling not "fair"
I know this is nothing to do with SqueezeCenter and is a last.fm thing, but I totally agree about having a total time would be much better than total plays. I was thinking about this the other day when I found that Sufjan Stevens was high up my artists as there are loads of 30 second/2 minute songs rather than longer songs by artists I would consider I listen to more. Re: [slim] SC7 doesn't recognize all MP3 files
Are they all mp3, or are there any AAC or Apple Lossless files? Seem to recall there's a bug with mov123.exe/QuickTime (used by SC for transcoding these files to a format SqueezeBoxen can play) which means files with a filename of 63 chars of more won't work. Re: [slim] SC7 doesn't recognize all MP3 files
iTunes is a lot less tolerant of filename and path length than SqueezeCenter, I think. I've fallen foul of this - if I scan the .xml using iTunes integration in SC I get less tracks than if I scan the music folder directly. Reason being, as far as I can see, if a filename/path combo exceeds a certain length iTunes won't import it. Not sure what that length is, mind! I know if you rip a CD with iTunes the resulting filename will never exceed 36 characters excluding extension. So now I've set dBpoweramp to truncate filenames to 30 chars to be on the safe side. But as Nonreality said, your tags could also be in need of examination. PITA finding which ones, though. -- moley6knipe Win XP Pro SP3 > dBpoweramp Reference 13 > iTunes > SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 > 2 x Squeezebox 3 > ears moley6knipe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10014 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50032 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For instance, I tell it not to analyze files that contain the word podcast (all my podcasts go into a folder named /mnt/media/music/podcasts so that catches them all). If you have lots of audio or spoken word, I would make sure to tell MusicIP not to analyze them. They'll still be available in the library, but it won't spend the analysis time.
