Re: [slim] Can't rescan playlists after SC7.1 update!

2008-08-12 Thread jwka

I had a similar problem.

It appeared that I had a link in one of the folders directing to the
top folder again. So, basically I had an endless loop for SC to work
on.

SC 7.01 had no probs with that (obviously broke up or had a better
algorithm to recognize loops), but 7.1 looped forever.

Removing the link solved the problem.

You can easily search for it in the command line with "dir *.lnk /s"
command in the root folder that you pointed SC to.

[slim] Moose not working with 7.1

2008-08-12 Thread jwka

I have been using Dr. Lovegrove's Moose because it is a much more
convenient way to choose CD's by cover and also the tree-style
organisation is much better than the Web interface of the SC server
(not to talk about the slow and tiny controller of the duett).

Having installed 7.1 Moose throws an exception "Problem MySql scanning:
Unknown column 'rating' in 'field list' "

Anyone that knows help for this?

Thx so much!

I find it so hard to understand why the developers at SlimDevices went

anyone explain the logic behind such a decision?

Problems!?!? That's putting it softly! Of all the programs I've used
in my life (and that's quite a few!) SqueezeCenter 7.1 is definitely
among the worst I've ever come across! SC 7.1 is a demonstration of
total lack of even a minimum of understanding on how to design a user
interface!

Secondly - why on earth write this as a bowser interface? This causes
the application to be slow, skippy, jumpy, non-responsive and subject
to all the bugs in EI7 (and even if I could choose another browser, I'm
sure the people at SlimDevices understand that 99,8% of all potential
customers do use IE7 anyway!)

The SqueezeBox itself is beutifully designed; menues, structure,
behaviour, everyting is fantastic! So why bundle it with such a poor
SqueezeCenter application? Is there any alternative out there? My
favorite would be a simple plug in to Media Player!

The best way to handle 24/96 with the Duet or SB3 is to create a 2nd
copy of the tracks downsampled to 24/48. The Duet will handle those
quite nicely and you may be hard pressed to tell the difference.

[slim] "Song by Artist" format - I like "Artist - Song"...

Re: [slim] Digital Output

2008-08-12 Thread scottelloco

Paul, thanks for your reply. It turns out it was the cable after all.
Not sure what happened to it, but I hooked it up to a meter and nothing
at all. IT was actually working a week ago on other components. Bought a
new cable and now everything is working perfectly. Enjoying the PS Audio
Digital Link III and SB3 setup very much. A very nice improvement and
can't wait for it to break in some more.

One note for anyone who is using a DL III: The original bad cable I had
would not give me a locked light at all. When I connected the new cable
I turned all my other components off, disconnected the power cord from
the DL III, disconnected the bad cable and attached the new cable, then
plugged the power cord back in and turned on my other components. At
this point I had a locked light, but still no sound. I then
disconnected the power cable from the DL III again and reconnected it.
At this point everything starting working fine.

Not sure why I needed to disconnect the DL III power cord again, but
that fixed the problem. Maybe just a fluke. Just a note for anyone who
has the same problem.

Simple - the wpl playlists are in no way a standard. The two commonly
used standards for playlist files are pls and m3u. Better ask Microsoft

Great job on ipeng! This may is off topic, but it seems like a
beautiful addition (or more likely a separate app along the same lines)
would be an iphone based universal remote control that would use a wifi
IR blaster (or even a usb IR blaster) to control components. Anyone
know if there is such a thing? (it seems the IR blaster hardware/code
software would be a perfect fit to the logitech product line if they
don't have it in the works already- someones going to do it)

I also access my server via my work pc when i travel for remote

Btw the web UI is not the main feature in this product, imho it's for
making settings to your players/server and add new music.

[slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-08-12 Thread ModelCitizen

Hi,

after just over one month Music IP has finished scanning my music
library. I've made a copy of the database and let Music IP write the
info to my tags. My problem has now become which set of install
instructions do I use. I have found at least five different sources and
I'm not too sure any of them are relevant now that 7.1/7.2 includes
MusicIP support.

I am running 7.2 on Windows XP and ideally would like to try using
MusicIp in headless mode (if this is still relevant for 7.1).

Can someone who knows this software well and has installed it on
7.1/7.2 simply point me to the definitive instructions for getting
MusicIP to work on 7.1/7.2 in Windows, ideally both in normal and
headless mode.

I am hoping that this question does not elicit as long and as confusing
thread as the last Music IP question on this forum, so for myself and
anyone else wishing to get this great program running in headless mode
with 7.1/7.2 on Windows I'd appreciate it if replies were knowledgable,
simple and to the point.

Thanks.

It is highly recomended that you run the firware that came with that
version of SqueezeCenter, there may be changes in one that rely on
changes in the other to function correctly.

However you can change a file in your SC 7.0.1 installation that tells
it to accept the higher firmware version. If you edit
transporter.version in the Firmware directory to read "1..50 50" at
line 6 SC 7.0.1 shouldn't ask to downgrade your firmware all the time.

Re: [slim] WHS - Can't use share names in Squeeze Center setup?

2008-08-12 Thread paul.burden

To change the path in MusicIP, I went to preferences (under the file
menu), I think the option was folders or library.

MusicIP seems to have sorted itself out (I appear to have the right
number of tracks showing now). However Squeeze Centre is showing lots
of duplicates. I am hoping that another rescan tonight might sort that.
Refreshing songs in MusicIP took rather longer than my forecast hour,
closer to three! I was also adding ~25 CDs to the library last night,
so I don't know what state the MusicIP library was in when Squeeze
Centre did its nightly rescan. It may be that MusicIP was still in a
confused state. At one point the track count was going up and down like
a yoyo.

I will force a rescan when I get home and report back later tonight or
tomorrow.

OK, so apart from "more snappy", which we all agree is the most
important factor, it's:
- Showing an artist with a track. Actually, I've been thinking about
doing that also on the NowPlaying screen since I miss it a lot there
when playing dynamic playlists. What do you think about that one?
- Schowing a vertical scroll-bar also for non-categorized lists. Puh.
Let's see
- Having a Lazy-search with a search result display like iPeng (sorry,
couldn't resist)
- Having icons and number of tracks for playlists. How about the same
for favorites? I'm not completely sure SC has a way to store an icon
for a playlist, though.

Anything else? What do you think about the additional "+" icon iPeng

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-08-12 Thread ModelCitizen

Cheers. So that the single best source for headless MusicIP integration
with7.1/7.2 now that SqueezeCenter includes the MusicIP plugin is here:
http://spicefly.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=61&;.

Thanks a bunch.

My PC is not very state of the art at all. I have nearly 30k flac
tracks.
I could not use the PC whilst the MusicIP scanning was running, and got
so fed up with the time it took to scan that I almost gave up. Luckily
it really sped up on the last 8k tracks (or so) as I was just about to
dump it.

I have a feeling that MusicIP might be the straw that breaks the camels
back, forcing me to upgrade my PC.

Re: [slim] "Song by Artist" format - I like "Artist - Song"...

2008-08-12 Thread moley6knipe

Some more info, then. Where is the offending display item? Web gui?
Transporter? SB3? Duet? Controller?

You do change the display under Settings/Interface/Title Format; this
lets you choose from a list of formats that you can customise yourself
- you do this somewhere else in Settings on the web gui (can't remember
where off the top of my head).

Does seem a little confusing in some ways, I'll grant you.

SC supports a wide range of playlist formats, including .wpl. As
others have said, .wpl is far from standard - .pls and .m3u are much
more common. .wpl is also proprietory to Windows. Not sure if you are
aware from your other posts, but SC is cross platform and works on Mac
and Linux too. There are increasing numbers of people out there who
don't use Windows.

So if .wpl was the "only" playlist format supported, people with
Macs/Linux OS wouldn't be able to use SC, people who have .mp4 files
couldn't use SC and if SC created its playlists in .wpl format they
would probably have to pay some kind of licence fee to Microsoft,
because it's a proprietory format. Personally, I think it's very
helpful that the designers have gone for the approach of supporting a
wide range of formats.

Re: [slim] iPhone application

Hi all,

back from hollidays :)
I'll upload my little application to the svn so you guys can see. (It
looks ugly, but you can browse folders, play songs and view current
playlist). It's quite easy to add playlist management (reorder,
delete).

BTW, the player ID is still hard coded, so you'll have to modify it
yourselves in order to test.

Is that supposed to be a reply to my quote you have highlighted above?
Appreciate you are having some issues you've discussed elsewhere, but
not quite sure what I did to provoke that kind of reaction in you - I
was just trying to help someone out. Actually, I very much like the
default web interface in SC7 (lightening fast for me using Firefox),
but I've been using SC for so long that I know my way around it
instinctively - and am probably desensitised to some of the things that
are bugging you.

Couple of things I can suggest - have you tried some of the other skins
like Fishbone and SlimFX - you may like those better if it is truly
about the interface design for you?

Try the Moose application/interface for Windows
(www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove). People who have your kind of
reaction to SC often seem to prefer it.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-08-12 Thread chemirocha

I have a similar situation to Stevan in that the controller will lose
connection to the SC server overnight whilst in the cradle and not
reconnect without restarting the controller.

The wireless power saving makes no difference.

However, I am running SC on a QNAP TS-209 Pro set up to do a scan for
new music overnight, during which time it becomes un-responsive. So I
tried running a scan this morning manually, after reconnecting the
controller, and lo and behold the controller has lost its connection
and cannot re-connect, even though the scan has completed and the
server is now responding normally.

I will try disabling the scan tonight and leave the controller in the
cradle to see if it loses the connection again.

BTW I can ping the controller successfully even though it can't
connect, in fact I can even log in using SSH so it is not a wireless or
network issue.

So, it seems to me that the real problem is the controller and SC being
unable to re-establish a dialogue once interrupted. However, it is odd,
since I can move the controller out of wireless range (and get the blue
icon) yet it will reconnect perfectly once within range again.

I hope this helps someone sort this problem, because it is really
annoying!

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-08-12 Thread ModelCitizen

Hmmm... the insructions are very good and all is well so far except for
one rather large thing:

Do I still need to install the SugarCube plugin or is this unnesseccary
as MusicIp is integrated into 7.1/7.2 (Note: 7.1/7.2 comes with a
pre-installed Musicmagic directory - C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Slim\Plugin\MusicMagic - which I'm guessing
is the included MusicIP plugin.

Other than that, for those that follow Ifound these things unclear in
the SpiceFly XP install instructions:

1) Should mention the need to start service before trying to bring it
up in web browser with http://localhost:1002
2) Gives the path to library as Vista path (to Documents and Settings).
For me on XP, 1.8.1b installed the MusicIP library in my C:\Program
Files\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer directory
3) Link to Replacement MusicIP interface is incorrect (interface not
found on page that is linked to)
4) Found it unclear if the registry fix for MusicIP/SqueezeCenter was
necessary for my XP SqueezeCenter plugin headless MusicIP IP
implementation.
5) Not possible to download SpiceFly Sugarcube from web site.
6) No mention of whether SugarCube was required with SqueezeCenter
7.1/7/2 (although this text on the Spicefly web site seems to infer it
is "It was written against Versions 1.8 of MusicIP and SqueezeCentre
7.01 running on Windows XP. But reported to work against MIP 1.9b5 and
SC 7.2.").

After endless difficulties with the Controller and Receiver I've just
had the pleasure of being lulled out of slumber by the Receiver
suddenly playing white noise coupled with a high pitch tone at high

with it for another second. And yes, I've checked the album, it's not
DTS and it's not damaged - plays fine through my PC, and SB3s.

inexpensive but full-range system suitable for almost anybody BUT a

Re: [slim] The "Secret bonus feature" guess thread...

2008-08-12 Thread gbruzzo

Would so very much cherish Napster support - last.fm is ok, but I do not
really care for being able to listen to a radio of "similar" artists
(based on what N-neighbourhood algorithm?). I would rather choose
myself the music to discover, with possible neighbours being offered,
yes, but still being given the choice of song and artist to listen to.

Napster would be a massive bonus for UK-non-rhapsody-enabled listeners.
For the time being I feel I am not being cared for much by
Logitech/Slim...

OK. So it appears I don't need to install the SugarCube plugin then?
But I still needed to install MusicIP and use the Spicefly instructions
to get it running in headless mode though?

At least for the Web UI it's hardcoded in the skin, you would have to
change that. For the "old" skins that was in "iteminfo", "trackinfo",
"by_from_info" and "ajax_by_from_info" in the file "cmdwrappers", I'm
not sure about the new default skin, though

Do you think anyone willing to spend $500 on a powered sub would not be

I have Vista 64 and unRAID as my NAS. I can map to unRAID fine form

mapped drive back to my unRAID NAS. The issue is I can not seem to
access the "music folder" from SC, SC just hangs and eventually I will
have to stop and restart SC. Is this a Vista issue or SC issue. As I
said earlier I can access the share from Vista with out issues so I am
thinking it is a SC issue. Also, do I need to wait until the scanning

The SugarCube plugin is a complete different animal that uses the
functionality of MusicIP to create an endless playlist on the flight.
MusicIP creates Playlists based on a single track/album seed with a
fixed playlist length... (Correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't
remember if one can create endless playlists with MusicIP)
MusiIP=Single root->Multiple Branches. Sugarcube, on the other hand,
creates a dynamic "endless" playlist based on the currently playing
song. Sugarcube=Multiple Roots->Single Branch. I hope I made sense. I
use both as you end with completly different playlists (moods).
Currently Sugarcube is having issues generating playlists if the next
track has extended characters in its path or filename. I hope this is
fixed in the not too distant future as my music library has a large
percentage of World Music that has been ripped/tagged using their
native language. When Sugarcube is enabled and working as designed...
You just play one track, sit back and let the virtual DJ in Sugarcube
take over.

Well, the fact that price discrimination is applied to the UK
(without...discrimination..) is no news. Bear in mind, I gather a
number of people would use the Napster framework as a medium of
discovery (which is what I personally used it for when I used to
subscribe to Napster-to-go - at that time you could simply download the
DRM-files and re-record them via Muvaudio (www.muvaudio.com) which gave
you an mp3 bit for bit perfect copy, and was not an illegal procedure,
given you are not breaking the encryption)

[slim] Low level buzz from Transporter

2008-08-12 Thread bigfool1956

Seems I have a problem with my Transporter, and I'm not sure what it
could be.

Basically if I attach my transporter to my system it creates a very low
level buzz in the speakers, on any input and with the volume reduced to
zero. Although it is (very) low level it does affect sound quality on
vinyl. Obviously I cannot isolate the buzz from playback when using the
TP, but I assume it is also having a negative affect there too.

If I pull the mains cord, it stops (surprise surprise). If I pull the
interconnects, it stops - so probably not mains related.

I don't believe it's a ground loop, as it affects all inputs, and is
not volume related.

Right now I'm pulling the mains chord when using vinyl, but that's
hardly ideal.

Ideas anyone?

Without wi-fi, the only strategy that I can imagine would be to access
your Squeezecenter server over your 3G/EDGE network. This would likely
entail setting up a Dynamic DNS service, ensuring that the appropriate
port forwarding is enabled, and using the /handheld skin (not sure how
the touch skin will appear on your phone). This will of course be
relatively slow. I have this setup on my own network and it does work,
but as my phone is wi-fi capable, it has not had much use other than
perhaps scaring the dog while out.

The AR search results are really similar, agreed - and you got there
first :) AR only has two rows of text (not showing album).

I also noticed that AR is "cheating" with search results, only
displaying e.g. 8 songs, although I know there are several more. The
resulting "Remote" playlist in iTunes contains all songs however.

Icons are nice to have, numbers are useful. Haven't thought about
favorites, but it sounds good.

The AR always stays in vertical mode, I really don't think horizontal
mode is useful for an app like this. (But then again I've never
understood the attraction of coverflow besides that it looks cool.)

As for the '+' I could personally do without it, but it doesn't disturb
me much.

Since I'm on a Mac and use iTunes as my main DB I would like to be able
to rate songs and see the rating using the iTunes update plugin for SC.

[slim] Is RadioParadise Album Art on Squeezebox Controller possible?

2008-08-12 Thread markbieg

I was wondering if anyone was working on a way to display Album Cover
Art on the Squeezebox Controller for RadioParadise. I know the artwork
is not displayed for basic internet radio, but there should be a way for
someone to get the artwork from the RadioParadise site based on what is
currently playing.

I don't fully understand what info is being sent via an internet radio
station stream that is different from the stream of Pandora or
Rhapsody. Can someone explain the difference?

I know there are a lot of talented programmers on this forum and I'm
sure someone is just itching to step up to the challenge of displaying
real-time cover art with the RP stream on the SB Controller! I'm sure
Bill at RadioParadise would even help out from his side if needed.

Possibly, though I've seen decent component systems with the speakers
positioned in the worst possible locations for sound quality. I'm
thinking in the context of the iPod dock systems that are starting to
replace the traditional stereo. The Boom would be competing with
those.

[slim] First support experience.

2008-08-12 Thread Nonreality

I just had my first experience with Slim Support. Julius (hope that is
spelled right) helped me with a power supply problem and was a total
pleasure to deal with. There was no hassle and he was willing to try
to solve it with the least amount of trouble for me. I appreciate
that. Thanks Julius.

I use 1.9b5 and 7.1. I also use the registry fix for proper loading of
the headless musicip before SC. I'm not using Sugarcube but I have in
the past. The replacement web interface is optional but I like it and
use it. I have no trouble downloading the interface from his site.
Same with Sugarcube. It leads to a forum link that has the download
link that works for me.

This happened with one of my SB3s also. I think it was after a power
surge or outage, so it could have been the powerline network or the SB3
itself.

I do agree with the OP that the Duet in its current state is more
problematic that the SB3.

Are you running SC as a service? If so you'll have to provide it with a
user who's allowed to access the NAS. And you'll have to use the UNC

Same here. To be fair, the SB3 (and its siblings the SB3, etc.) have
been around quite a while and have had a lot of time to mature. My
expectations with the Duet were it would be as solid as the SB3. In
that regard, it failed my expectations. I guess it's just going to
take time for it to stabilize.

Hopefully the boombox will be based on SB3 technology and won't suffer
the setup quirks the Duet has.

Re: [slim] "Song by Artist" format - I like "Artist - Song"...

2008-08-12 Thread netphreak

I am so sorry I didn't specify my problem in a more professional
manner.

I use the handheld skin, SC 7.1. I am mainly interested how formatting
is presented in web gui.

And I am sorry I was mistaken on the "Artist - Song" formatting - it's
perfectly functional.

What confused me was how the varaible "FILE" or "TITLE" is handled. Try
(under "Settings -> Interface") to use "TITLE" *ONLY*. What output do
you get? "Song by Artist"! I tried this before I started this thread. I
kind of figured "TITLE" was outputing "Song by Artist", so no chance of
separating them.

Now I realize that *as long as "Artist" is present* in the formatting
field, [b] "TITLE" field is outputing "Song" only.

Why?

I see where you mean now, on the Library option it opens a browser

I deleted the old .m3lib file, then restarting MusicIP mixer took me

I'm assuming selecting the shared folder on the network rather than the

Re: [slim] "Song by Artist" format - I like "Artist - Song"...

2008-08-12 Thread JJZolx

In the web interface there's some odd logic in the display code that
adds "by [artist]" if ARTIST is not already in the format string. If
ALBUM isn't in the format string, it will also add "from [album]" in
places such as the playlist.

On the player display I think you'll find that it uses the title format
exactly as it's entered.

BBC 5live isn't available for me currently, tried to access today and
it is coming up with a message saying 'Due to rights restrictions, we
are currently unable to bring you this program' rather then streaming
the station, all other BBC stations seem to be working.

Is anyone else getting this or know why this might be ? I checked on
the 5live website and the station is streaming from the website so
unsure as to why it would be unavailable via Squeezenetwork
