Re: [slim] No Internet radio on FreeNAS / SlimNAS?

2008-08-13 Thread Toonie

Hello, I just thought I'd share my experiences. I have just recently
bought a Duet, and like Jannock I have set-up Squeezecenter onto my
QNAP NAS (TS-109II). However, I set-up my controller and receiver
*before* I installed SC. What I found was that it seemed to work fine
with all radio stations, including shoutcast. When I set-up SC I got my
music library working just fine, but now most of my internet radio
stations don't work, including all shoutcast ones.

It seems that the controller has enough functionality without SC to
handle radio. Is there any way to tell the controller NOT to use SC
when dealing with radio? Otherwise, I'm in the same boat as Jannock.

Regards,
Toonie.

I also got it to an adress that I didn't use on bugzilla, but I did use

[slim] Auto-Sensing Amp for In-Wall/Ceiling Speakers

2008-08-13 Thread WSLam

I am in the middle of renovating my new place and will have about 10
SB3/Duet setup throughout the house. Other then my main HiFi rig, I am
hoping to deploy in-wall/ceiling speakers. The speakers wire will run
to a place where the Duet/SB3 will be placed. What I now need is a
auto-sensing amp that 1) must be small, 2) requires little to no
ventilation. I do not need lots of power, they are just for background
music.

Any suggestion? Thanks!

It works for awhile then I go back the next day and when I select the

Yep. 2665 tracks is too much. Everything above 150 tracks or so per
playlist will cause trouble. See the iPeng thread in the "3rd party

Re: [slim] Stuttering AAC playback / beginner

2008-08-13 Thread bpa

AAC files are decoded using an application called mov123.exe which uses
QuickTime library. The following instructions makes a program called
faad.exe do the AAC decoding independent of QuickTime - in many cases
this fixes the stuttering.

1. Download the zip file from here
http://www.rarewares.org/files/aac/faad2-2.6.1.zip

2. Unzip and save the faad.exe file in your Squeezecenter Bin
directory. If you have a standard installation then it will probably be
in
C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
There will be other applications in this directory such as alac.exe and
flac.exe

3. Download the attached file, unzip and put the custom-convert.conf
file into the main SC direcotry ( probably C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server ) which has the convert.conf file.

4. Restart SC and check that Settings/Advanced/File Types that the AAC
file type (e.g. Apple Movie ??) is using faad and not mov123.

Re: [slim] Where is controller's "expansion port"?

2008-08-13 Thread dean

The "expansion" port is really used for factory test, low level software
development and debugging. (i.e. when you need a serial console really
really bad).

It's not a supported feature of the product (i.e. when you plug
something into it and it breaks, it's not covered by the warranty).

That said, if anyone is interested in some low-level hacking, let me
know and I can post the pinout of the port.

[slim] Random play doesn't restart for Winamp

2008-08-13 Thread Phil McCavity

I've recently upgraded from the old Slimserver software to
SqueezeCenter.

Previously, when streaming to a Winamp client on my LAN, if I closed
Winamp and restarted it then playback would take up where it left off.
This behaviour has gone with the new software - my "random play"
playlist is cleared and I have to restart playback.

Interestingly, when I use iTunes then playback does restart correctly
even though the settings for the two players are identical.

What should I be looking at to correct this?

Re: [slim] Transporter RS232 codes - Help required

2008-08-13 Thread amcluesent

IMHO, the 'button' command will provide the basics, i.e. '
button volume_up'

Following the 'slim' concept, I'm assuming that the RS232 input would
take such a command string and relay that to the Squeezecenter for
parsing. The Squeezecenter will process the command, send instructions
to the player(s) as needed and echo back to the RS232.

[slim] Stuttering AAC playback / beginner

2008-08-13 Thread jsa307

After receiving my squeezebox duet yesterday, I have found stuttering on
playback of AAC encoded tracks. The stuttering is worse for the AAC
files with higher bit rates (i.e. 320), and less obvious as the bit
rate goes down. No such problems with mp3 files or internet streams.

A search of the forum turned up multpile threads, but most were too
advanced/confusing. I obviously don't have these issues when playing
back the files on Itunes. I tried playing back the files on quicktime
itself, which was also fine. My setup is AAC files/Itunes folder on an
external HD connected by firewire to a computer with dual 1.8 chips and
1 GB ram. Internet signal strength on squeezecenter is between 80-90.

I realized this may have been covered in detail, but would someone be
able to offer some advice. A few threads that I found were way over my
head (ie

I prefer the moving wheel. The tactile sensation of the movement gives
me much better control (and the audible feedback is also good). The

thought of it as an example of trying too hard to be too high-tech, and
pack too much functionality into one small place. I much prefer the Duet

I am now concerned that this unit is not fit for this purpose.

Will I be able to use basic controls froma control system via RS232

Re: [slim] WHS and AlienBBC

2008-08-13 Thread bpa

The top level "Listen Again" is broken for most stations.

With V5 There should be a 2 menu item at the very end. One will be
called "BBC iPlayer radio" and another something like "Search iPlayer".
Once V5 addon files are opied to Alien/Addons these menu items will only
appear after SC restarted .

All the programs you have listed are marked as available under iPlayer
- however BBC have had some problems where programs are not recorded or
recorded in RealAudio. This is a BBC problem.

Assuming V5 addons files have been copied to the correct directory,
then you should check location of alienbbc.opml and any
permissions/access that could interfere with accessing the file.

OK Rich. Another quick question, did you leave the SBR connected to SN
when you turned it off (to standby) last night? Or did you switch back
to SC before going to Standby? If you left it on SN and then just went
to Standby, if the Internet, your network, the SN server, if any lost
contact with SN/SBR then when it "saw" it again, the SBR reconnected
and then I believe that is why the LED is on.

IIRC During beta, I think a usb-ethernet adaptor was tested.

If Squeezeplay is popular then a external battery pack could be
useful.

I've checked my local suppliers and I couldn't locate a match for the

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver Turns Itself On

2008-08-13 Thread Fletch

If you're using the 7.1 RPM, the logrotate script will cause SC to
restart based on whatever SUSE's default logrotate settings are
(probably weekly).

I don't have an SBR to test with, but on my other players this restart
has never caused them to turn on.

No I don't think so; it doesn't load everything in one go, and even if
it did, you should see *something* showing up eventually. But the url
you are using seems strange, I don't think a "mobile" skin exists? I'm
using

ip:9000/handheld

Anyway it could also be a problem with your mobile internet settings.
On my phone there is a thing called "accesspoint". My provider makes it
possible to setup the phone using a "wap" accesspoint which allows
web-browsing. However pop and imap email only works with a "internet"
accesspoint.

If that approach turns out impossible, you might try and check out
whether your phone supports ip over bluetooth. That should make it
possible to access SC within your lan at least.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver Turns Itself On

2008-08-13 Thread maggior

Hi -

Yes, I understand that it is always on, even when it is off :-). I
have not restarted my system and no updates have been made to the SBR -
I'm still running 7.1 production.

Perhaps it's got something to do with the network, but I doubt it.
It's happened during the day and at night. During the day I know my
wife isn't doing anything that might reset the network. I was using
SqueezeNetwork last night - maybe that has something to do with it.

I'll keep an eye on it to see if there is a pattern. The bottom line
though is that if the light is supposed to function as a power (or
standby/non-standby) indicator, it should remain off when the unit is
powered off (or in standby).

Your data plan may not allow use of port 9000. The data plan I have
with my provider allows use of port 80 but not ports 21 and 22. If I
move to a full internet plan I can have those ports, but I'm paying
$2.99 per line for data vs. $20.

Thank you for your reply, but there is no chance that these were
unintentional or sent by someone else. Indeed, Morten Lindberg at 2L
has twice acknowledged sending them. Here are the headers indicating
that they originated directly from your netblock. Your customer has
continued to do this even after apologizing and saying that they would
remove us from their list. Under the circumstances, I would suggest
terminating their service. Otherwise you run the risk of having your

Yes thanks for all that. A switch off and another install has got Alien
back.

Copied in the latest V5 iplayer files though with no joy which is where
I came in a while back. I'll try this switching/off and reinstalling
for a bit and see if that works. Maybe I'm looking for things that
aren't there yet - mostly Radio 3 such as Late Junction but also wake
up to money from Fivelive and Ian Anderson from Radio Scotland. I have
a listen again option with none of them there and there is meant to be
an iplayer on the menu which is where they will be?

Re: [slim] 2L now trolling websites to Spam?

2008-08-13 Thread trulskarlsen

Hi.

Regarding the sending of spam to you guys, when it comes to viagra and
rolex-spam it's usually a virus and not spam sent out intentionally.
Viruses can harvest email-addresses by crawling around on the web by
itself or by watching what the users of the computer are doing. It
might also be sent from computers having no connections to l2.no at
all, but sent with a fake originator - the email-protocol was made when
the internet was 12 guys that knew eachother personally and unfortnatly
has lots of flaws.

In all emailclients theres a way to see the full header of an email,
which contains lots of information. Please watch the full header of
your recieved spam and look for ip-addresses or hostnames. If you see
any ip's that starts with 195.159 or any hostname that ends with
.powertech.no please forward the email to abuse at powertech dot no and
we'll contact the customer. If you find other ips than ours you can use
tools to find out which isp it is and every isp should have contact
info for abuse-matters.
American ips can be looked up at http://www.arin.net/whois/
European ips can be looked up at http://www.ripe.net and
Asian ips can be looked up at http://www.apnic.com/ .

So remember that it's not only a chance, it's probable that this is a
virus and not l2.no spamming.

If you have any more questions about this matter or have a report of
spam originating from 195.159.x.x or x.powertech.no feel free to email
us!

The point is that its an example of Slim/Logi providing support for
hackers. Its a hack port. They provide it, you have to invent something
clever to do with it.

Compare to most vendors that cover all of their products in epoxy so you
can't change it. Not quite open source hardware, but close.

I'm sure that the connector is availble at Digikey or Mouser, even if
its not at Radio Shack. I have no idea what it is, but Sean and company
have been very open with details like this.

You can remove it, it is diificult but what is the point. The connector
does not seem to be a common available one.

As per the Wiki the expansion connector that brings out: serial, USB
(host or device), audio out, audio in, 3.3v out, 5v in.

I think only the serial is really supported. Any of the USB support
will probably need kernel modules added.

Re: [slim] WHS - Can't use share names in Squeeze Center setup?

2008-08-13 Thread bonze

Odd thing
MusicIP now seems to be pointing to \\server\music on my WHS box now.
Not sure how it happened, I thought it wasn't yesterday but I did a
rescan in SqueezeCentre this morning and the scan was reporting it as
that.

As for clearing the MusicIP cache, I'd deleted the .m3lib file in the
Administrator folder, which prompted the Mixer to ask for the music
location. I pointed it to the Network shares rather than the
D:\shares\
I'd also cleared the SC cache, so it might have been that too

Anyhoo, now everything is pointing to \\server\music, and I have only
one copy of everything.

Re: [slim] WHS and AlienBBC

2008-08-13 Thread bpa

7.1 was in development for many months before it was released and the
necessary 7.1 support changes to AlienBBC were finalised before 7.1 was
released.

The wiki gives troubleshooting advice for Alienbbc. Basically.,

1. Reboot the PC - I think Windows has some strange caching which can
affect plugin installation.

2. Verify the installation directory (e.g. what is the full path for
the RTSP.pm file)

3. Is there an AlienBBC entry in Settings/Plugins.

4. If there is an AlienBBC entry in Settings/Plugins - what happens if
you click the AlienBBC "settings"

5. Do you have RTSP entries in Settings/Advanced/File Types

Hello Rich,
Couple of months ago I went over the states of the SBR in a beginners
post. My quick question is, is it really ON? If you turn your
Amp/Pre-amp or Receiver on do you have music if you hit the pause/play
button on the Controller? Or do you have to select Turn On from the SBC
first? The SBR is never really off, it is either in Standby or On. When
On, it is ready to play music if there is music queued by just pressing
Play.

Several things can make the LED on the front of the SBR come on when it
is in Standby. I have noticed several things that make it look like it
is ON when it has just changed status states. Restarting SC, rebooting
a network, rebooting a server, receiving an automatic update, it
reconnects to SqeezeNetwork, can all cause the LED to come on when the
unit was turned to Off (really standyby) by the Controller.

I guess the bottom line of what I am trying to say is if it is not
playing music all is fine as the unit is never really off unless one
unplugs it.

I had already erased the email and have not traced this in any way.

[slim] Squeezebox Receiver Turns Itself On

2008-08-13 Thread maggior

I have my Duet for less than a week and I noticed that it will turn
itself on after a while.

Using the controller, I'll turn it off. Overnight or a few hours
later, I'll walk up to it and the light on the front will be white. If
I fire up the controller, I have an option to turn the player on. So it
is like it turned itself on but didn't notify anything else.

My receiver is connected via WiFi. I am running the released version
of 7.1 on Open SuSE 10.2.

Anybody else experience this? I see where others had the issue, but it
was months ago.

Thanks.

Thanks, I tried that and it didn't help.

It turns out that I was actually connecting to my remote server not
through it's IP address but via my own domain name using 'WEB URL
cloaking'. This has always worked in the past but now I find that by
changing it to use 'Web Forwarding' instead of cloaking everything is
working again.

[slim] Web Interface Error

2008-08-13 Thread elziko

I connect t my SqueezeCenter vis the web interface locally and from
across the internet and it's been working fine for ages.

Last night I had to re-install SqueezeCenter and although I can still
connect to the web interface locally when I try it over the internet my
browser (IE7) starts to load the page, gets as far as displaying the
background and the a dialog pops up stating:

"Stop running this script?

A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If it
continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive."

If I click 'Yes' then the dialog disappears and the page stops loading.
If I click 'No' I get an hour-glass for about 10 seconds and then the
dialog reappears.

Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

Re: [slim] 7.1/7.2 fails to remember previous menu position from Now Playing screen?

2008-08-13 Thread ModelCitizen

As succinctly as possible?

This is only relevant for the remote/player display, not the Duet or
SBC.

You can choose between various screensavers for individual players
(Payer/Basic Settings). Up to and including 7.0.1 the "Now Playing"
screensaver was set as the default for when music was playing and
kicked in afer a set time (can't rmemeber what the default time was).
However annoyance was caused to many by the fact that when the
screensaver was shut off (for instance by using the left arrow button)
the user was not left with the screen they had been on before the
screen saver kicked in but with a completely different screen (iop menu
item I think it was then).

To addresse this the screensaver "Now Playing (Jump back on wake)" was
invented. If you selected this screensaver in your Player/Interface
settings then when the screensaver was stopped (by a hitting a key) you
were returned to the screen you were on before the screensaver kicked in
(as most usrs seemed to expect to be). Very unfortunately this
screensaver was left as an option and not made the default.

It took until 7.1/7.2 for the "Now Playing (jump back on Wake)" screen
saver to be made the default screen saver. And at this time it was
renamed to be "Now Playing", which as Michael says, is bound to cause
another layer of confusion... but in my mind was the correct choice and
well was there a better option?

And now my particular bugbear:

The Now Playing area has always been a bit of a mess. There is a
confusion between the Now Playing screensaver and the Now Playing
screen (oh yes, they are different things!). They look like the samne
thing and are pretty much called the same thing, but they have
different functionality applied to them.

For instance, if you are using 7.1/7.2 and the default Now Playing
screensaver ("Now Playing (jump on wake)" as was) kicked in you can use
the left arrow and you'll be returned to the screen you were viewing
before the screensaver kicked in.

But if you select Now Playing from the remote you are returned to the
Now Playing *screen* and hitting the left arrow takes you to the top
item in your Home menu.

To me the most obvious and overiding fault with the remote/display UI
and the main reasons that some new users think the system is
"eccentric" and hard to get to grips with is the similarity and
differences between the Now Playing screen and screensaver. The recent
decison to make the originally named "Now Playing (Jump on wake)"
screensaver the default will go a good way to alleviate this
eccentricity, but still does not entirely address the problem.

Problem now is that Alien itself has gone - just after my updating to
SC 7.1. I'm on 2.01b1_7 for Alien and like I say v5 for BBCi player

Use Alien more than anything else so since BBCi came in it's all been a

We changed the screensaver's names:

- Old "Now Playing" -> "Jump To Now Playing"
- Old "Now playing (Jump back on wake)" -> "Now Playing"

> Are you saying there is actually an alternative ?

There has always been. Now it's even the default behaviour

> Also, what's the difference between 'Now Playing Information:' and

The screensaver can be anything. The "Now Playing Information" is about what
will be displayed besides the title etc. when in Now Playing mode.

That's one reason why we changed it: the new names should better describe what
the screensavers are actually doing. And the former default behaviour was
annoying/confusing. Thus we changed it, too.

> How on earth are mere mortals expected to figure out what these options
> mean ?

We hope strongly they will now do better than ever before :-). Really - I think
longtime users will be more confused than newbies, as they've got used to the
confusing names. New users will find them much more intuitive to understand.

It's working fine here. The above option is now simply "Now Playing", and the
former "Now Playing" is now the "Jump to Now Playing" or similar. IMHO it was a
simple string change. And it's still working fine for me.

If you have 3rd party plugins/screensaver, get rid of them and try again.

Re: [slim] 7.1/7.2 fails to remember previous menu position from Now Playing screen?

2008-08-13 Thread ModelCitizen

Having played around a bit more it seems that the old "Now Playing (Jump
back on Wake)" setting has been entirely done away with.

If I'm correct this begs the question: Why?

The "Now Playing (Jump back on Wake)" was the only setting that made
any sense out of the Now Playing screensaver/Now Playing screen mess.

Without it the SB2/3/Transporter display/remote UI is just plain
frustrating to use. The change has made a major difference to
navigation... and entirely for the worse.

I'd be very interested to know why dumping the "Now Playing (Jump back
on Wake)" setting was considered a good idea, and if there is anyone
who thinks that the remote/display UI works better now without it?

I'd really like to revert back to 7.0.1... .

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-08-13 Thread Rasso01

I have installed the MusicIP on my older PC running XP and SC7.1. The PC
was approx. 3 days to "catalog" my 12.000 tracks. After read the issues
about the database and its unstable reputation I used the archive
function, in order to move the information to the lac files itself. It
failed (windows errors) a couple of times, but everthing seems OK now.
My PC is mostly used to serve my SB3. I have therefore set the PC o go
o Standb mode after 5 seconds. So via WOL wake-on-lan I can ignte the
PC and both SC and MusicIP are ready to use after few seconds.
I am very satisfied with the job the MusicIP, are doing together with
the SC. Before I have to choose with Genre or Band or artist and so on.
Its ok but you forget some music, and often its more than a feeling of
music you have, han a specific wish for this and that.
Now having a tune in your head you go and find that melody in the SC.
Hold play and the remote and BINGO the MusicIP gives you just the right
corner of my 12k tracks...
A great thanks to www.spicefly.com for having a great site whith lots
of advices.
Regards Rasso, Denmark

Re: [slim] BBC 5Live not available, anyone else got this ?

2008-08-13 Thread y360

SN server location makes no difference, it is not involved in the
streaming. The streaming request is always directly from the player.

Plug you your ip address in the following and see what comes up:

http://remote.12dt.com/
http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp

Try to reboot your router to see if a new IP address from your ISP
resolves it.

Otherwise contact BBC and/or your ISP - they are wrongly determining
your IP address as non-UK

[slim] Where is controller's "expansion port"?

2008-08-13 Thread tbessie

I keep reading about the SB Controller's "expansion port", but on the
bottom of my controller is what would be some kind of port, I suppose,
but it is blocked off by a piece of plastic.

Is there anything behind that, or are they not actually including any
port there?

I doubt it. The Sonos controller uses a similar non-moving wheel.

[slim] SB Controller: How can I change what "Now Playing" looks like?

2008-08-13 Thread tbessie

The "Now Playing" screen of the SB Controller has the rather large album
icon on it, and I would like it not to be there (like you can do on the
SqueezeCenter web interface).

Does anyone know if this is configurable?

The Squeezenetwork servers aren't based in the UK, so if you're
listening via SN, it may be that the BBC are picking up the location of
the SN server you are attached to, not your UK IP address.

Have you tried the UK only address for Five live, while attached to
Squeezecenter, not Squeezenetwork?

There was also a problem with the Five Live url a while back (see 'this
thread - post #11'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47760&page=2) which may
be relevant?

Hmmm. I'm sorry Michael, I think I may have misunderstood you. Are you
saying that the current behaviour of the "New Playing" screensaver is
supposed to be the same as the behaviour of "Now Playing (Jump back on
wake)" used to be?

If so, that's not how it is for me. Neither "Now Playing" or "Jump to
Now Playing" do what "Now Playing (Jump back on wake)" used to do. In
fact both of them appear to do exactly the same thing, i.e. for both
hitting the left arrow takes you back to the top Home menu item.

An aside:
The Now paying Screensaver idea has long been the most confusing thing
about the SlimServer UI. It is a thorn in the side of
straightforwardness. :-)

[slim] stopping at end of track

2008-08-13 Thread aevans

Since upgrading to 7.1 i've had a problem where my SB3 stops at the end
of the track while its in 'random song' mode about 80% of the time.

Is this a known issue? I've done a search and can't see anyone else
with the problem.

I had crossfade switched on and was wondering if it were something to
do with that. I switched it off this morning and the problem didn't
occur again but only tested with 3 tracks. I'll report on how it goes.

I agree and Julius could have made it a bad experience by taking the
usual send it back and we will have a look. A person before him
suggested that I do a complete reset which really didn't make any sense
but then he said it was just a standard response and probably didn't
apply. I'm glad he didn't insist on this before shifting me onward.
Some companies do this when the usual flowchart says to even if it has
nothing to do with the problem. Overall it was a reassuring phone call
for me and I do like doing business with a company like this.

There we go... I was sure this would lead to confusion: "Jump To Now Playing"
is not the "Jump Back" flavor, but what used to be the "Now Playing"
screensaver. It will really jump there and not go back. Thus you'll have to use
the simple "Now Playing" version...

That's what I thought at first so I checked that my Now Playing
ScreenSaver settings had not changed. They hadn't... however the it
appears name of the "Now Playing (Jump Back on Wake)" screensaver has
been changed to "Jump To Now Playing". Perhaps it's behaviour has
changed too? If it has then there now appears to be no difference
between it and the "Now Playing" screensaver setting.

sounds like the difference between the "now playing" screensaver and
the "now playing (jump back on wake)" screensaver. The jump back option
will remember the last place you were, where the non-jump back will just
go to the now playing menu position, which when a left arrow is pressed
takes you to the "now playing" top level menu item.

[slim] 7.1/7.2 fails to remember previous menu position from Now Playing screen?

2008-08-13 Thread ModelCitizen

I've been finding navigating music on my SlimDevices quite frustrating
recently and I've only just realised the main reason why.

I'm sure when I used to hit the left arrow button on a remote from the
Now Playing screen I used to go back to the last menu item I was at
(usually an album or track in my collection). Now when I hite the left
button I am *always* returned to the first item on my Home menu. This
means nine times out of ten (yes I've counted) I have to navigate back
to where I was previously. This is a right pita.

Has this behaviour been around long and I have I just missed the
change? I know that the SBC suffered from this behaviour but thought
that it was intended that it's behaviour would soon come to mirror the
behaviour of the remote. However, what appears to have happened is that
the behaviour of the remote has been modified to mirror the (far
inferior in my opinion) behaviour of the SBC.

Can anyone elucidate in any way?

Thanks.
