All the Apple Airports I had broke down after one or two years. None of
the none-Apple routers/access points I ever had ever broke down. I like
the compact AE design, but I want my stuff to keep working. It seems
Apple has a bit of a quality problem, or is this just marketing? They

[slim] Repetitive Scan Failures

2008-10-15 Thread Chewie

Yesterday I moved my FLAC library to a new HP MediaSmart WHS EX475
2gb/4tb, this evening I decide to scan the library into a clean
SqueezeCenter 7.2 and on five separate occasions now its failed.

On every occasion the scan reaches roughly the one hour mark and then
it states, as can be seen from the last screen grab that it has
“Finished Scanning” when it clearly has not.

The old library is scanned without any problems from my old desktop pc
when stored on an external disk. I have also downloaded the latest
7.2.1 nightly and the problem still occurs.

Could anyone offer some advice please, what should be a joyful play
with a new toy is rapidly turning sour?

Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to offer me some much needed
advice.

Basically you can do any modifications you like for your personal use
but you can't redistribute them beside sending them privately to
Logitech for inclusion in a future release.

The main limitation with this in my opinion is:
- You can't port SqueezePlay to third party hardware and redistribute
it without permissions from Logitech. This kind of make sense since
Logitech really only earn money on the hardware, so it isn't strange
that they like to avoid competitors making money on their free
software.

The other limitations are more theoretical, sure it doesn't allow you
to make and redistribute your own version of SqueezePlay but the number
of persons willing to do that and spend time maintaining their own
version are probably pretty close to zero anyway.

When you think about it, the licensing is pretty logical. Most parts of
SqueezeCenter is GPL but it can't be used with third party hardware
players anyway so there is no reason to restricting the license.
SqueezePlay would be possible to use with third party hardware similar
to Controller, so restricting the license makes sense from a business
point of view.

Re: [slim] Best Harmony for SB3?

2008-10-15 Thread SilverRS8

I bought a Harmony 1000 and send it back. I had to push a lot more
buttons than on my Denon universal remote. The harmony 1000 also has a
delay of about a second between button presses. Thats very irritating
and it becomes even more so because it will queue the buttons pressed.
Result, you either have to be patient (i'm not) or you select the wrong
options (like the wrong language on a DVD in a laguage list).

Hopefully the lower ranged harmony's work a lot better.

But the JP1.x units are just normal boring universal remotes - Harmony
is more than that.

I have a few around the house, the cheapest being under $50 from Sears
and they all work fine with SBs, but personally I'd go with one of the
better models with a color screen for a living room setup.

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-10-15 Thread Flipper

Made a change to my Linksys BEFW11S4 config which appears to have
increased stability of my setup so far. I made the change approximately
3 days ago.

I changed the client lease time setting to 5 from 0. Linksys
documentation indicates that 0 means a DHCP lease time of 2 days but I
have to wonder.

Since I made this change I have not experienced any connectivity issues
and I was regularly experiencing them before. I can see from the DHCP
table that clients are getting the same IP address when I power cycle,
etc.

Yesterday I also turned off the wireless power save as mentioned
earlier in this thread. I don't believe this made much difference in my
case. I plan to disable it after a few days of stability to see.

We think about new music services all the time and myspace is certainly

users of myspace and users of Squeezebox. At first blush, you might
think that the myspace crowd is too young to be a SB user. However,
lots of SB users have kids who are part of the myspace crowd.

So, just how many of you out there would place myspace high on your

Thanks Skunk.

I guess the barometer for me will be comparison with an iPod, any ideas

You mean the Controller right?

The remote is just a remote (written with a lower case 'r').

That is a headphone socket which at the moment only plays the clicks
that play out through the internal speaker.

A software upgrade that turns the Controller into a player is in the
works and is being bushed out to those testing SqueezeCenter 7.3. This
is a beta firmware and the audio playback is considered alpha quality
right now.

Re: [slim] The Microwave effect

2008-10-15 Thread maggior

I didn't encounter stuttering. The music would stop and the SBR would
cycle through the lights showing it was reestablishing its connection
with the server. The song would start from the beginning, and then
just stop until it started playing from the beginning again. This
would start minutes after the microwave was done and would continue
until I cleared the playlist and started again.

The controller is on the side of the SBR opposite the microwave. It
never has a problem and is part of what gave me the idea of moving them
apart a little bit.

So the stuttering problem might be different than what I was
experiencing.

I think the radio stations did it where the next song just started
before the first one ended. Thinking back on when I used to listen to
radio a lot, the fadeout would just be the fadeout of the song itself
as it was on the record and the next song would be started prior to the
first song completing.

I used to find this really annoying because I was used to listening to
a song to it's end. Some stations didn't do this and I found it
refreshing.

I had this happen for the first time with the Boom in my Kitchen. It only
happens for FLAC files (due to the increased bandwidth) so I turned on
bitrate limiting (320Kbps) and the problem was solved. If you haven't tried
that, you might prefer the small decrease in quality over the stuttering due
to bandwidth issues.

I also have a Panasonic microwave and get stuttering from my duet
whenever it is used and I have music going. As soon as it cuts off,
all returns to normal. This is a mid level model that I got from
Amazon a couple of years ago. The Duet hardware is several rooms/walls
away.

Wow! That's pretty crazy that only 3 inches made a difference.

Both my Boom and Micro are mounted, though, so I can't easily move
them. Here, it hasn't been too bad working around it by timing the
microwave with song starts and doing my stirring at song transitions.

That's the problem. There's only actually 1 disc. With 11 tracks,
labeled 1 through 11. No idea why I've got multiple albums present.

I'm on 7.3 nightly now, and I don't still have this issue.. so.. this

Re: [slim] The Microwave effect

2008-10-15 Thread maggior

The other day I noticed that the microwave was creating havoc with my
Duet in the kitchen. It would just clobber it requiring me to clear
out the playlist and start over again. I was reminded of a posting I
made here boasting that my Duet was immune to the effects of my
microwave.

So I thought back on what had changed since then and remembered that I
had moved the setup to another room for a party my wife was having with
her friends from the MOMS club. It seemed like the problems started
after that.

I figured perhaps I didn't put things back exactly as they had been.
As an experiment, I moved the microwave to the left about an inch and
the duet to the right a couple of inches and voila! no more issues. A
mere 3 inches of additional separation made the difference! I was
pleasantly surprised.

If you are having issues with the microwave causing interference, you
might want to just add a little more separation - it may make all of
the difference.

Question: Should IPv6 be supported?

- Yes

I voted "don't care". At my job, I'm on a team that is adding IPv6
capability to a VIOP gateway. The compelling reason is to make the IT
depts. of larger companies happy. Some locations (I believe the US
govt. is one of them) will not allow new equipment into their data
center that isn't IPv6 capable. If it weren't for this madate, we
wouldn't be doing it.

NAT technology has made the problem that IPv6 solves much less urgent
and some would argue makes IPv6 unncessary. However, NAT breaks with
the general philosophy of all networked devices being directly
addressable over the Internet. A day is invisioned where you will want
to be able to address your toaster, coffee maker, and refridgerator from
your hotel room over the Internet.

Since IPv6 is rolled out with dual protocol stacks for backwards
compatability with IPv4 devices, I don't think we have to worry about
our SB devices anytime soon.

Here are some interesting articles on the topic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6_deployment

And why not make the jump to IPv9 because China's gotta be different!

Re: [slim] Artwork (sort of) missing in 7.2

2008-10-15 Thread herts101

I had the same problem as the OP in SC7.2

Solved problem by unchecking my "Use MusicIP" setting and doing a full
rescan.
This bought all the artwork back. I then re. checked the Music IP box
and did a "New and Changed" scan.
The artwork stayed in place.

Not sure if this is a MusicIP issue or just that this forced SC to do
the correct rescans but it worked for me!

If only the beginning of the path has changed, it is probably possible
to use the "replace all" functionality in the text editor of your
choice.

If this is the case, the next TrackStat version will be able to restore
the ratings correctly as long as the filenames and the last two
directories in the path is the same.

What information would you need in the report ?

It should be possible to do with the Database Query plugin, you just
have to figure out the correct SQL statement. The actual path is a bit
problematic because it is encoded in the database, so unfortunately I
think you will only get the encoded version in the report (same as the
one shown in the backup xml file).

If you like to do a report, you should do this before you switch to the
new disc.

IMO IPv6 suffers from "nobody wants to be the first penguin off the

for everyone else to go first.

I have a hard enough time entering a 63-random-character WPA key into

[slim] Confused about compilation album settings

2008-10-15 Thread Andrew B.

I'm sorry but I have spent an hour looking for an answer to this and I'm
sure it is simple enough but I'm darned if I can make it work properly.
Here's the issue:

On a compilation album like Pop Party 3, my FLAC file tags show the
same album name for all tracks (good) and the actual artist name. This
means that when I browse by artist and go to "any songs" I will see the
tracks I have in my library from that artist, regardless of whether they
appear on a compilation album or the artist's own album. That's good and
the way I like it.

The problem comes when I decide to browse by album. Then instead of
seeing one entry for "Pop Party 3", I have 40 entries - one for each
individual song - so it treats it as 40 different albums! I would like
to just see it as one album when browsing by album but I would like the
artist browsing behaviour to stay as it is. This can't be too much to
ask...

What do I need to set or change in the library settings or the tags? I
have MP3tag for tagging. Also have dBPoweramp and various other bits of
windows software.

Thanks

Andrew

As you say, Disc 1, 2, and 3 make up the whole album. So why not just
rip it as one album? I use dBpowerAmp to rip with. I remove the 1/3 and
change all the Disc to 1/1. Then when I rip the second and third disc, I
use Track Offset to re-number track 1 on disc 2 to whatever follows the
last track on Disc 1, same for Disc 3. Now it is one album as it should
be, and only shows once in SC or on the Controller.

Open Source or Source-Available?

Beyond the fact that they let you look at it, the license seems pretty
strict to me:

Re: [slim] Wireless Range Expander with Duet Controller

2008-10-15 Thread Skunk

Roaming support is supposedly coming with SC 7.3.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53361

In the meantime, it might be easier to manually roam if you added
'Wireless Network' to the Controller's home menu.

Re: [slim] New Wiki Posting Controls - Login Required

2008-10-15 Thread atikus_66

I'm very confused each time when I'm looking for plugins through the
plugin wiki.

The implemented structure with long table is not comfortable for many
people to edit (especially for me).

Is it possible to define a mediawiki template that contains following
elements:
Name, Version, Author with e-Mail, Weblink to Plugin source,
Software Applicability: SC Version,
Hardware Applicability: SB family members
Maturity: alpha/beta/stable/dead/integrated in ...
Category: Audio, Visualization, ...

Thanks to the template it would be very helpful to create/update plugin
entries and the plugin user could find the right plugin in short time.

Cheers

IPv6 is not going to happen in firmware. You will never run out of IPv4
addresses on your LAN. Try 10.x.x.x.

While I'm unlike to run out of private address space in my home network

can see myself using well into the future. So...

I image it would be easy to add IPv6 support to SqueezeCenter (at least
under various unix platforms), but does anybody have any plans to start
this implementation and of course it's the firmware that really needs
to have additional stack support.

Is anyone from Logitech able to spill some beans???

I think this puts me at odds with most people, but I like D-Link's
interface best. I have had great results with both the DGL-4300
(802.11b/g, 4-port gig switch) and the DGL-4500 (802.11b/g/n, 4-port
gig switch, USB). They're kinda pricey, but I think I've only had to
reboot once or twice in four years or so.

[slim] Wireless Range Expander with Duet Controller

2008-10-15 Thread ajkidle

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this post -- there doesn't seem to
be a dedicated "network issues" forum, so I guess general is as good a
place as any.

I've discoved that plaster walls combined with the chimney running
through the middle of my house is not a friendly setup for WiFi. Or,
at least it weakens the signals enough to cause problems for my SBC.
In hopes of solving this, and to pave the way for getting WiFi out to
the deck for a future Boom, I picked up a Linksys wireless range
expander (WRE54G). This is mated with my Linksys WRTP54G -- one of
their routers with VOIP built in. Both are using the same SSID and
same WPA settings. They see each other and life is grand.

But not quite. I had hoped that the WRE54G would just boost the signal
throughout the house. But now I've come to understand (I think) that a
WiFi device such as the SBC attaches itself to a particular access
point. So if I'm close to my router when I turn on the SBC, it links
itself to the router. And similarly, if I'm close to the range
expander when I turn on the SBC, it links itself to the expander. But
if I move from one side of the house to the other, the SBC doesn't roam
with me -- it holds on to that original (now very weak) connection.

Is there someway to make the SBC "wander" and grab the stronger access
point's signal as I move throughout the house? If not automated, is
there a way to manually force the controller to reconnect to the other
AP without cycling the SBC's power?

One other quick note, I have version 3 of the WRE54g which does not
allow you to use a different SSID than the router's. Older versions
allowed this, which could have been a potential (albeit messy)
solution, but no dice.

Any ideas? Or am I doing something obviously wrong with this
configuration?

Thanks,
Andy

Re: [slim] Multiple Albums?

2008-10-15 Thread Hangleton

I too have had this problem.

In the past, it's been differences in tagging, and fixing the tags has
resolved it. Usually something like case mismatch (and vs And, for
instance).

Recently, however (and it may be since version 7.2, I can't be sure), I
have seen the problem when there is no difference in the tags. A full
rescan clears the problem, which surely wouldn't clear the problem if
the tags were different.

If there's any information I can gather if and when this happens again,
I'd be glad to try. I am unsure that it would be reproducible at will
though.

Regards,

Andy

Re: [slim] Moved my Music Library

2008-10-15 Thread funkstar

Sure any file copied between two locations can become corrupt, it is
very unlikely though.

Your FLACs will be far less prone to this than an executable windows
program (for example) as FLAC does have some error correction in there
as well.

If it was me, I wouldn't be worrying about it at all.

erland, excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by manually editing
the TrackStat Backup file? Is it just a case of editing a couple of
lines or a line for every rated track?

If all else fails erland, is there a way to print out my existing
ratings to aid me in re-rating the moved library.

Question: Wired only Squeezebox is a good product?

- Yes
- No

In the market SD/Logitech are pitching their players now, a wired only
version doesn't make a lot of sense. It would cause additional
confusion and it would be extremely difficult to get the additional
retail shelf space for another variation. So it would be an online only
product, limiting the appeal even more.

*everything* is going wireless these days, I really can't see a wired
only version happening again.

[slim] Moved my Music Library

2008-10-15 Thread Chewie

Yesterday I copied my existing Music Library from an external drive to
the shared music folder of my new HP MediaSmart EX475. All seems to
have gone well, the two libraries are bit perfect but should I be
worried about any FLAC file corruption? Excuse my ignorance but could
the FLAC files have been corrupted in the move and if it is possible
how do I check that my new library is ok.

I have previously used the excellent Audiotester V1.6 but there is no
Windows Home Server version.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

Re: [slim] Is an NMT skin possible?

2008-10-15 Thread trotsky10

Yep that is me.

Scratch the swisscenter etc. I have them but they are not as good as
squeezecenter and don't support everything i.e. ape etc. As I
mentioned in the thread on networkedmediatank I am actually not
looking to play the music through the NMT but only use the web browsing
capabilities to control the squeezebox through squeezecenter.

Classic, Ipeng and nokia skins (yes web based GUI probably written with
php) area available through squeezecenter giving a different style web
based GUI for displaying on different devices:

http://:9000/classic
http://:9000/ipeng
http://:9000/touch

etc

Would be great to have one that works and looks nice on the NMT.
Though I haven't tried all the existing one's to see if they work yet,
so if anyone knows or has already tried I would love to know.
Otherwise when I get the chance I will update here.

No, it still doesn't really respond. With 7.2 or 7.3 installed, the
remote just doesn't work. Basically the Transporter will not go to the
Home menus, it is stuck on "Now Playing" thus you cannot access your
music library.

I've done multiple install attempts, including clean ones after reboots
and manual purging of any Slim/Logitech registry entries, but the
problem remains. This is definitely a bug though it may be restricted
to the combination of Transporter + Squeezecenter 7.x running on Vista
x64. I'd revert to Vista x32 but I have 4gb of RAM installed and would
lose almost one fourth of it with 32 bit OS.

I am starting to look into NAS for my music files.

I agree that there needs to be a crossfading option to start new songs

There is a bug report 'here'
