Hi All

Wow, I really didn't want to hear that! I bought a SB Duet recently as
after a long time looking for a decent way to get my MP3's onto my home
stereo I found the SB / NetgearNAS solution.

Over the years I have painstakingly tagged my music collection so that
all my various artists have an artist field of well various
artists I started this way back in the day.

. having the rolling stone top 500 album appear under the artist
U2 or whoever is lame the song is likely going to appear on one or
more of the proper U2 albums anyway

This is my first post here as I've otherwise been happy with the
sb/sc... all I wanted to know was how to get the SB to stop second
guessing how I wanted it to treat compilations/various artists if
it just read and treated the tags like any non-compilation album i'd be
happy.

How does one lodge a request for additional functionality (read
simplification)

Cheers Guys

Re: [slim] SB3 VFD Luminosity (beloved one can not sleep)

2008-11-21 Thread Mark Lanctot

Unfortunately in the SB2 and SB3, 1 is as dark as it gets and it's no
more fine-grained than that. Boom is much better - it can go much
darker due to hardware differences.

You may want to try Settings - Display - Standby Font set to High, then
size set to small. To get a High font in the web UI, select the blank
drop-down box, then use the drop-down arrow. That will eliminate
everything but the clock on the top line and use 1-pixel-wide
characters. This is literally the smallest number of pixels that can
be lit to indicate the time. Turn off more pixels by setting the font
to read hour and minutes only, no date. A 24-hour format would
eliminate a few more characters but I can never get 24 h time. :-)

Even after the above I found it was still bright enough to make a
nightlight and cast shadows. Again, Boom is much better here -
perhaps the developers heard my pitiful whining. ;-)

[slim] Slimp3 screen blanking when scrolling, not sb1

2008-11-21 Thread Scally

I've recently noticed that when I'm playing from a playlist on my Slimp3
that the screen momentarily blanks each time I try to scroll through the
list of songs to be played. With the now playing screen showing the
current song progress, if I press the remote's down button, I'll get
shown what is next, but within about 0.5 seconds the screen will go
blank, for about 1 second, then re-appear. Press down again, same thing
happens. If I repeat this very quickly the screen stays lit. I also have
an SB1g and this does not go blank. I'm using 7.2.1 on XP Pro (after
upgrading from 7.2, since for some reason I could not get the server to
show me the 'DISPLAY' settings option for my Slimp3, though that server
page worked fine for my SB1g (the log showed a problem accessing a
method in display.pm). Upgrading solved that problem, but not the
screen blanking of the Slimp3. Both units are wireless (Slimp3 through
a bridge) and wireless strength is good (60%). My PC is dual core
2.6GHz, not doing anything else at the time.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: [slim] How Many Duet Controllers?

2008-11-21 Thread SuperQ

I don't think there are any limits to the number of Controller remotes
you can attach. The Controller doesn't do any sync at all. The
Squeezeboxes do all the syncing. Yes, each Controller is independent,
and each SB is independent. The only real limitation to the number of
Controllers is you can only have about 30 devices per access point.
Wifi APs tend to get cranky when you get past 25 devices.

My suggestion is to have as many Controllers as you have people in the
house who use the system. Personally my girlfriend and I get by with
one.

The range of the controller is about the same as the SB, maybe a little
less.
Is there any advantage to having several controllersother than the

(Ie, it makes no distinction between Elvis Costello's with and
without sorts defined... if any Elvis Costello track defines the
artistsort, it will carry onto all tracks.)

So you will have to look at every track with Elvis Costello as artist
to see if it has the sort defined. Note that this can be defined in
multiple ways even on mp3: not just a TXXX ARTISTSORT field, but also
TSOP or musicbrainz tags. It may also come from iTunes integration or
MusicIP, I think, if you use those.

If it is true that 1 instance of an ARTISTSORT tag can set the value
for that artist across the board, I can see a problem:

-Library has 1 soundtrack album with multiple artists, ARTISTSORT tag
is set to soundtracks (or any other value)
-Library has an album by 1 of the soundtrack track artists, with
ARTISTSORT set to that artist (Let's say U2)
-If the scan process reads in the soundtrack first and does set the
ARTISTSORT value in the db for all U2 tracks to either Various
Artists or Soundtracks - That would explain most of my problems.

Well, yes, that would.

ARTISTSORT is tied to ARTIST. It says, for this artist, sort them as
this... it applies to the ARTIST, not the TRACK.

Severly mistagged is all in the eye of the beholder. I have so much
music with so many genres (which in my mind are VERY subjective and
random), I don't enjoy browsing by genre. I do use it by exclusion
for some views in J River Media center - for example, don't display all
albums with GENRE = CHRISTMAS.

However, I see your point - the problem is that nowhere are the sort
priority/rules defined so a new user would know what to set.

This helped explain things for me:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7698

The punchline:
-I need to remove all ARTISTSORT tags from my compilations (or set each
track individually) - if that happens SC will not override the sort
order for those artists.

The remaining problem:
-I would like all of these soundtrack albums grouped together while
using an Artist / Album view. I have seen reference to some requests
for ALBUMARTISTSORT ranking... I'll have to investigate to see if this
is my same issue.

It is just frustrating because I have other existing setups that
provide exactly the behavior I want based on tags I have carefully
scrubbed - and I can't even achieve that behavior in SC even by adding
tags.

theres an itunes for linux?

No, but if you care to and have an ipod made before the Classic you
can probably run Rockbox. (www.rockbox.org) Plays flac, ogg, and all
that and can be synced using your choice of Linux programs. Works
great for me - one flac library, no messing about with playlists,
converting, any of that and it sounds awesome.

You can also boot back to the original Apple firmware whenever you

Re: [slim] Album Sorting - Confusion, Flaws, and an unclear path forward

2008-11-21 Thread AndrewFG

This may be a bit OT, but from reading this thread it seems that most
people are concerned with libraries of modern music where ALBUM, ARTIST
and ALBUM_ARTIST are the parameters for sorting.

Perhaps unlike you guys, I also have a significant classical library.
And in such cases you might have ALBUM = Symphony No 5, ARTIST =
Chicago Symphony Orchestra (or Lorin Maazel) and COMPOSER = Ludwig van
Beethoven.

In such cases I most certainly do NOT want to group/sort all my
recordings by Chicago Symphony Orchestra; instead I want to group/sort
all recordings by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Is there any feature of SqueezeCenter that allows classical music to
sort on COMPOSER and modern music to sort on ARTIST?

No, this is much better than what we did before. OK, I was mistakenly
thinking that this was being done with sox, but it's actually using
lame to convert to mp3. However, that is way better than dropping every
other sample, which causes massive aliasing - all the material above 22
KHz gets folded down into the audible band. Also, the CPU can't
actually keep up with 96Khz flac decoding, so you would get audible
dropouts too. I must sound like a broken record by now...

Andy - is there a bug open to upgrade this to use flac-sox-flac?

SC 7.3 knows which player is capable of what max. frequency. So for a
transporter _no_ downsampling is required in contrast to a SB3/Boom/SBR
downsampling is needed and done on the server side. This happens without

I don't know why your DAC doesn't recognize the signal, but you don't
need to set the bitrate limiting option (you may set the LAME quality
level). Resampling will be triggered automatically if your input
sampling rate is higher than 48khz AND the destination player is NOT a
transporter, i.e for all other players.

Can you see if SC starts any processes? (flac, lame)

You could try filter film sheets available from any good photographic

Probably true.. Classical tagging is a black art.

I believe Erland's Custom Browse plugin can be tweaked to do this.

I just bought a pair of powerline adapters because my farthest room, an
attic two floors above the wireless router, suffered drops, especially
in the morning. Another receiver, however, is still connected
wirelessly.

Question is, how I can I tell the attic receiver is connected via
powerline and not wireless. My test signals shows a low connection. All
I did was plug everything in and connect the receiver via Ethernet to
the powerline adapter.

Each time that I skip a track, it is starting from the same offset e.g.
if it ended up at 3.1 seconds after the end of the track, it starts at
this offset for the next track. Right now it is only the one device
that is out of sync, the other two are working fine.

File type that I'm using right now is WMA.

As I mentioned in my original post, the only sure way I've find right
now to get rid of this offset is to disconnect the power of the
offending unit and power it up again. On a reboot it seems to do
something different then happens on a track skip.

Can either of you provide an insight as to how this offset gets
introduced originally? Do the devices try and do a clock sync and for
some reason one device on my network is getting a different time?

Thank you very much mark for this hint. I knew I've seen something like
this in the past, but looking quickly, I couldn't retrieve it.

I'll try with this setting but I think it will be ok (I just fear I
won't be able to read it in the middle of the night). I didn't
understand your explanation about setting the hour and date separately.
To me, the apparition of the date is only relative to the font type (i
mean that with some font size the date is present, with other, it
isn't).

I could also try light narrow with a simple date dd.mm.yy format.

The idea of photo filter has already been studied, but I prefer not
having the clock than being forced to put some plastic sheet on the SB
screen. I already had to put some blu-tack on the bright blue led
indicating the input of the power amp :). (Teac has made a dimmer
function on the remote, but put some bright blue led on the machine...
idiot engineers!)

to create conflicts than repurposing an existing standard tag--because
when you repurpose an existing tag, you are relying on the quirks of a

[slim] wireless bridge function sb classic

2008-11-21 Thread akushnir

My SB classic works great via wireless about 80ft from my router.I just
got a DirectTV HDDVR with internet capability which sits next to the SB
so I wanted to use the SB as a wireless bridge rather than run a cable.
I turned bridging on. I followed the directions for the Direct TV box.
My tv showed that indeed the network was connected, but I couldn't get
a internet connection on the DirectTV box.
Later, I found that my internet was down and I had to do a cable modem
and router reset. I haven't tried the setup again.
Could this attempt at connecting another device through the SB bridge
function have crashed my router? Is there something else I need to be
careful of before trying this again?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Alan

The only reason I can think of would be so that the SB uses less time

be an issue until you get a lot of SB's playing at the same time.

One can always install a seperate (older?) router for SB on a different

a dual-band/dual-radio router.

bounces back during powerfails etc.

So you find what works for you. I don't think it's fair to say

Re: [slim] Best or at least good places to buy SB in the Netherlands?

 Hi,

Christmas on the way and I want to buy a SB thingy for a present. It
needs to be shipped to an address in Holland (Rotterdam). This
shouldn't be too difficult but I am about 7000 km away in Panama I
did find Dunnet and WifiSound on the net. Anybody who can point me to a
good place (good price, availability, reliable?).

Wifisound is probably good. Never used them, though. Azerty.nl had a
very cheap SB classic a few weeks ago, but they probably realized their
mistake. It's now E200 like in most places.
Also, same for a nice amplified set of speakers. I noticed some Dutch
fellows on the forums, please help me out here ;-)

The Wifisound people are probably the best choice.

Regards,
Peter
