There is no way legally to change the current SqueezeCenter code to a closed source model. The only reason to change the open source model would be if Logitech decided to completely change the technology to something other than Perl. However, with the current crew this doesn't make much sense as it would be a huge investment. The question isn't really if this is going to continue to be open source, the question is if we will see the same involvement from the development community in the future. The interest of helping a small company like SlimDevices for free is one thing, doing the same for a large corporation like Logitech is a completely different thing, especially if development of the core is handled pretty much behind closed doors. radish;368767 Wrote: > > What Logitech have done, which incidentally I think has been handled > really well, is to reinforce their in-house team with skilled devs who > _can_ be managed and scheduled to implement core things which are > determined to be essential. You have to have a in-house team that is large enough to take decision and do development based on time schedules and economic factors. The trick here is still to keep up the interaction with the development community if you like people to continue long term community commitments. There will always be developers available that make a single plugin they need and then disappears, but to make sure community developers stays communication is extremely important as I see it. Unfortunately, my personal feeling is that this is something that we see less of today compared to before. Just look at how discussions are handled in the "Development" section of the forum, many are left unanswered or without involvement from the Logitech crew. I suspect discussions still are happening among the Logitech crew but they probably happen behind closed doors. With a lot of community development there is a huge risk that schedules will slide and features not interesting from an economic point of view will get focus. This is something that is IMHO something that can be seen in many open source project. radish;368767 Wrote: > > Really? Never heard of a company relying on Linux? Or Apache? Of course, the open source philosophy also makes it possible for you to personally get involved to make sure it gets finished in time. For closed sourced commercial products you can often get a planned release date, for open source projects this often doesn't exist (with some exceptions). Fortunately this is something that has been improved lately with SqueezeCenter as we now have a roadmap which at least contains the planned contents for the next release and also a planned release date. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56164 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Suggestion: Volumen control bigger dB span
Most elegant solution is to use analog attenuators before the amp. Then you can use most of the volume range in the SB and get lower noise floor to. A resonable level of attentuation is so that full volume on the SB is as loud as you reasonable want to go (just a tad under clipping the power amp ;) ) http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Connect_To_PowerAmp Personally i use Rothwell -10dB attenuators in my HT to level out differences between amps and use the full output of HT preamp (who also employs 24bit digital volume) -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54606 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Controller Display Question
I have mine set to "never", but my controller behaves a little strangely as well. When I remove it from the cradle and start playing some music then put it down, after about 30 seconds the backlight for the buttons goes off and the screen dims. After about another 30 seconds the screen turns off. If I move the controller the screen comes back on at full brightness, as well as the button backlights, and stays on. Seems to me at least the button lights should turn off to reduce battery consumption. If I leave the controller in the cradle when I start playing music then the screen just stays on from the beginning and never dims/goes dark. I have "now playing" set as screensaver and, as metioned, dimming set to "never". -- floydthecat floydthecat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20988 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56193 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

That's a bit unfair, even if most of it was done 15+ years ago to re-implement VMS on x86. M$ was reportedly a big user of Linux and Apache in the olden days, i.e. when MSN.com was rolled out. Or just relax on Hawaii or somewhere. Or maybe a new team is even more enthusiastic and brings the product forward a lot? B. The »old guys« wish to stay since it’s such a great product overall that they wish to keep on rockin’ and the working climate is great. Also great. C. A mish-mash of above. The signatures were done with a different type of pen and ink, which seems to be more sympatico with the crystaline structure of the case and so provides more undertoe. Erland, I know your work is highly respected. You should probably expect the change you describe will happen, just a question of when. Relying on volunteer developers has not (to my knowledge) been shown to be a common or successful model for running and growing a business. My guess is that the development philosophy wasn't so much a desire to accumulate a circle of people to sing Kumbaya, as much as it was a means for the founders to get development work done for free. There's definitely a reason why Logitech bought SlimDevices and I'm pretty sure some of the main reasons are that they believe in the products and that they were interested in the open source development philosophy. However, the question here isn't really if Logitech is committed, the question is if the original SlimDevices employees and founders are interested in continuing on the Logitech road or if they like a completely new challenge. I haven't seen any indication yet regarding missing commitment to the product, but I have seen a difference in the interaction with the development community. The interaction with the development community has definitely changed since the Logitech purchase, from my point of view a lot more stuff happens behind closed doors today compared to before the Logitech purchase. Although, the reason for this might not actually be the Logitech purchase, it could also be that there are more employees today and that the roles among the lead developers are different today than before. It shall also be said that I'm not sure this is a bad thing for the company, it's just one of the things that are different today compared to before. I think Logitech bought both the products but most importantly I also think a main reason was that they were interested in the development philosophy used. This also makes me think that Logitech wants the original employees and founders to remain, because if the original employees and founders are lost there is a huge risk that the development philosophy and community also is lost in the process. So the real risk as I see it is if the original employees and founders doesn't feel like continuing working under Logitech. I'm pretty sure the intention was to make this work and probably still is, so I don't think we should be worrying yet. There were a lot of people worrying directly after the purchase that everything was going to be lost, but I think most arguments form these has so far been proven to be wrong. The fact that most new developers earlier was part of the community is also a good thing, from my point of view this is an indication that Logitech really wants the open source development philosophy to continue. I'm pretty sure we would see a lot of changes among the employees if Logitech suddenly would decide to end the open source development and start a closed source direction, fortunately there is no indication that they plan to do this so far. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56164 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Restart from URL?
Thanks for the responses guys. The first sounds like it may help when 7.3.1 arrives, and the second at least suggests another possible solution - what about a simple Applescript? I can almost certainly write one to end the process, then presumably there's a way to launch one as well. I can only see 'perl' in the list of running processes. Is this the only process to end? And will it respect a request to end, and stop 'properly'? Any thoughts on how to restart it? As a last alternative there's probably a way to open the System Preferences panel and click the button, but I'd really rather avoid that. Previous attempts at this sort of thing have proven to be messy at best. -- twynne twynne's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1326 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56183 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Restart from URL?
There is a service for Windows that can do this. That you can just poke it to restart the whole server. I imagine something similar exists for Unix. In fact you could probably write a cron script to do it. By just creating a file for example it will see it and restart a daemon or the machine. For example here is a cron tab that restarts appache. http://www.richardpalace.com/2008/05/14/cron-job-restart-apache But instead have it check for the existence of a reboot file (much more frequenctly, say every 10 seconds). Push the file onto the server remotely by what ever means, The cron tab script sees it, deletes the file, and restarts service (or reboots machine). -- mswlogo XP > Cat5 > Transporter > SPDIF > Meridian G68 > DSP6000, DSP5500HC, DSP5000 XP > Cat5 > SB3 > SPDIF > Meridian DSP5000 XP > Cat5 > SB3 > SPDIF > Meridian G91 > DSP5000 'My Transporter Setup' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=350741&postcount=45) 'Hitch Hikers Guide to Meridian' (http://www.meridianunplugged.com) mswlogo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9090 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56183 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You can't do it though the SqueezeCenter software, but if you also have a standard web server installed there might be possible to do it through some cgi scripts. It's planned to make this easier in future version as the new Extension Downloader module in the upcoming SqueezeCenter 7.3 will require it after a new plugin has been installed. There is nothing regarding simple restarts in 7.3.0 though, so you will have to wait at least for 7.3.1. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56183 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's absolutely brilliant that 7.3 pulls art from "downloaded artwork" folder, since embedding artwork in every track causes serious bloat. However, I notice that the artwork only appears to be associated with the first track of each album. Not exactly a bug, but it would be lovely if SC recognized that the downloaded art is for every track on the album, like iTunes does. As I've moved to 7.3 and seem to be beta testing a number of plugins as well (informally) I'm quite often restarting SC. Re: [slim] Suggestion: Volumen control bigger dB span
Hi, Just to let you know if you start using very low volume levels on the analogue out of SB then it won't be very hifi. The volume is reduced by shifting bits in the digital domain. Whilst the SB3 has a 24 bit DAC - it should be OK til you get to 16 bits left, volumes lower than that will be throwing data away. The further reduction the more lost data. For HiFi there is no easy replacement for analogue volume fed by full range signal. See this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55863 Volume is set by Squeezecenter, and you can change the range by editing Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm (if you're running the .PL version as on Mac/Linux, rather than the Windows .EXE). The current range is ~50 dB, and it looks like you can go to about 80 dB and still have differences between each volume step -- below ~-80 dB you hit player firmware limitations with regard to precise gain control. Re: [slim] Can I use the Controller and classic remote with SB3 interchangeably?
Rick, yes you can - but keep in mind there are some(*) tasks you'll require the classic remote. I sometimes use all three control channels (web, remote & SBC) almost simultaneously without problems. Most "single-click" actions (pause, play, next, prev, etc.) have _no_ timing problem and are propagated throughout the system immediately. A few other actions (seeking through a song, loading a new playlist) executed on the WebUI or the classic remote will take a few seconds until the controller is been updated with this information. (*). e.g. firmware upgrades of the SB3 require "press&hold brightness" (unless you configured it to do auto upgrades) and some functions and plugins (like the lazysearch you mentioned) are available through the Player-UI only and therefore need the classic remote for control. kind regards, Markus -- schiegl schiegl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6654 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56175 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I also use windows via samba to access these files and have had problems in the past where linux will recognize special character but not Windows eg ? character. So I always check the ripped files in Windows and modify names accordingly. The scanner error turned out to very obscure I had two directories one for Faure' and one for Michael Bubble' In both cases Linux AND Windows read these directories alright in Explorer However when the Artwork was being scanned it wouldn't accept the e' character and changing them to just e solved the problem surely this is a buf in SC? -- Vulcanbomber Vulcanbomber's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56176 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Suggestion: Volumen control bigger dB span
Hi I have exactly the same experiense - hence problem with my SB3 Classic. I bought a second hand Mission Cyrus XPA to drive my speakers with the feed from the SB's anlogue output. This move was to keep it simple and get rid of my NAD surround receiver with a number of analoque "ports" I basically don't need. So, big was my surprise and regret to discover that playing low-volume music is not an option...?!??? :o( Regardless of the (appearently) many volume-steps on the SB it seems to start the first step at what I would asume is about 15% of fuld volume. >From there the volume control seems to be reasonable linear. That is not usefull - since it is impossible to play low back ground music! Anybody (Slim Devices people!!!) any suggestions for a solution or comments for that matter...that does not imply additional equipment like e.g. a pre-amp. That undermines the fact that the SB is equipped with volume control. Btw changing the nice name and logo of "Slim Devices" was IMHO a biiig mistake. [slim] Podcasts sometimes end half way through
Folks, I have my squeeze box for almost two years. I use it a lot for Podcasts using the standard Podcast plugin. My problem is that sometimes the podcast ends abruptly half way through. My questions are; 1) Is there a way I can find out (through logs etc) why this is happening? 2) **Most important** I can't fast forward through the podcast when I try to replay it. Is there a way to do this (other than downloading the podcast and playing it like an MP3)? I got that, however, there are other variations that can cause this. "The Las" comes to mind (even though the Band writes itself "The La's"). Any Artist, Album or Genre entirely made up of articles to be ignored will cause iPeng 1.0.3 to crash. There are also some combinations of illegal characters in the transmitted data that were reported to cause trouble but I haven't been able to reproduce this (it would have to be something that breaks the JSON response and the only case I know about is the NULL field in the first record in albums but that's fixed in 1.0.3). -- pippin --- see iPeng at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] QNAP TS-109 and AlienBBC
Outside of the UK all BBC programming (Listen again and live) is available in RealAudio format. The higher quality MP3 format is only available in the UK - I believe it is because BBC license payers should get the better services. The BBC "live" programs (all about 64k) are all available in RealAudio format (including regional and local radio). The WMA streams R1-R4 are not available outside of the UK. For some streams there are UK and international versions - notably 5Live. In this case, the UK only stream is not available outside of the UK. Re: [slim] QNAP TS-109 and AlienBBC
Does the BBC allow streaming outside the UK ? I use the iPlayer plugin, and the listen again service streams at 128 kbs CBR. The listen live service streams at 65 kbs CBR. The reason for the difference, according to the BBC, is that they have to limit the bandwidth on the live streams due to demand. If this is the case then they may restrict streaming to UK based servers. Of course I could be talking absolute rubbish - if so ignore my comments. Re: [slim] QNAP TS-109 and AlienBBC
Your main concern about AlienBBC is not memory but processor speed/power. The following are general points about ARM based NAS. AlienBBC requires mplayer to decode RealAudio. You need to make sure that there is a build of mplayer available for the QNAP you intend to use. If the processor speed of QNAP is limited you may have to play RealAudio streams as WAV and not be able to transcode them into Flac or MP3. If you are using wireless, this can be a concern as it will require good quality wireless connections. The processor power may also limit the number of SB that can be playing RealAudio at the same time and/or the number of synced players. You should check these points with users of the specific model of QNAP you intend to buy. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56162 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
