Re: [slim] How to you like to search for music in your library ?

2009-01-03 Thread jazztime

I found this old thread. YES I would love to be able to search custom
tags, as this - as far as I can see - will be the only solution to what
I like to bee able to do using native iPeng app on my iTouch:
- browse lead artists (tagged in ARTIST field)
- search for musicians (tagged as PERFORMERS and scanned by
customscan)

I do not want musicians to be part of the artist list, and I do not
want to find musicians in a list - simply because the list of musicians
will be way to long.

I can find no solution for this without being able to search custom
tags. So Erland - I hope you still are considering this!!

[slim] Severe rebuffering; please help

2009-01-03 Thread marklings

I have just installed a brand new SB3 (FW 121)
I have an internet gateway (both wired and wireless) and a remote AP
(Aiport Express)

I am testing just squeezenet as Internet Radio is my thing

When attached to the gateway everything is fine, either wired or
wireless, even if I move away from the gateway till I get a 30% signal

When I move in front of the remote Airport Express (the intended
location) I get severe rebuffering. It's like 5 seconds of music and 30
seconds of rebuffering. This even if the signal strenght shows at some
93% level.

The Gateway is connected to the Aiport express via a Netgear XE102, an
over the electrical wire adapter.

As I have tried many configurations the problem seems to be either with
the Airport Express or with the Netgear Xe 102.

Anybody has had any experience with those ? Any suggestions ? I am
stuck ! Thanks, Mark.

[slim] SqueezeCenter No Longer Working

2009-01-03 Thread elziko

I upgraded from SC v7.3 to v7.3.1 on Vista x64. Everything was working
fine before but after the upgrade I was unable to connect any of my
players (SB3, SBR, SBC, Boom) to SqueezeCenter or open the SC web UI on
the machine.

I could not even restart the SC service, restarting the machine
router did not help either.

So I did a system restore which took me back to SC v7.3 - however, I
still have the same problems.

Does anyone have any ideas on what has gone wrong and what I can do
about it?

Thanks!

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-03 Thread rspieckermann

Hello Pippin!

My iPeng 1.04 app crashes on startup, and it does it every day, until
i've rebooted SqueezeCenter. After that it works fine..

This is my configuration:
- iPod touch Software 2.2
- iPeng 1.04
- server 7.3.1 on QNAP 509, SSOTS 1.15, Swap on USB, SqueezeCenter NOT
on USB
- 7.3 crashed as well, not sure about 7.2.1, and no, i won't downgrade
to test this :o)
- 2 Boom, 1 Classic
- every player has a name (it's not that bug..)
- i'm doing an automatic scan for differences every morning at 6:00 (i
think this is the reason for the crash)

This is what i've tried so far:
- checked that it's really the 1.04 (in itunes as well) - didn't help
- clearing cache - only solves the problem until i restart the app,
then it crashes again
- reinstalled the app after deleting it from the ipod - didn't help
- did a complete new scan in Squeezecenter - didn't help

Any ideas? Known bug? Is there a crash log somewhere that i could
send?

Thanks for your help pipp, it's a great app!

Bye Ralf

I used Gimmesometune (sorry, Mac-only as well) to embed the artwork

Re: [slim] Wiki is slow

2009-01-03 Thread Godders

(From the bugtracker)

 Firebug/YSlow report on wiki.sd.com

Firebug/YSlow reveal a few interesting details which might be easy to
 improve:

This page has 43 external JavaScript files.
This page has 16 external StyleSheets.
This page has 12 CSS background images.
 This page has 14 redirects.
This page has 14 redundant JS components.

The extra JS and CSS isn't the reason it's slow (they're cached
anyway). It's slow because a lot of them are referring to
www.slimdevices.com, which is the redirecting to skins.slimdevices.com.
This redirection is accounting for more than half of each page's load
time. Attached is the output of an HTTP sniffer. All the blue lines are
the redirects.

If the URLs to the external content in the wiki were changed to the
correct URLs, it'd knock 5 seconds or so off the load time of each
page.

I've blocked http://www.slimdevices.com/js/ using adblock for now, and
it's loading a lot faster.

I just change stations and come back instead of skipping and never

I usually only hear songs off of one album for any one artist, with lots

Re: [slim] Minor irritation: change in SB3 behaviour when server sleeps

2009-01-03 Thread autopilot

I raised this a few weeks back, it annoys the hell out of me. I also
raised a bug last month asking for it to be looked at. I understand the
reason was to help new users and help diagnose lost server connections,
but it makes no logical sense to automatically display the message
without any user interaction. Think about it, if the loss of connection
was not intentional then what would a user do? They would always press a
remote key of course. So the error message should only be displayed
after the connection is lost AND the user presses a remote key.

Re: [slim] Boom + Duet = Slacker problem?

2009-01-03 Thread tdnuerf

jmourik;378187 Wrote:

Got a question for you though, what would you say are the differences
 between Slacker, Pandora and last.fm?

I don't listen to last.fm very much, but I don't believe it lets you
define multiple stations; you enter artists to listen to, and it plays
them and similar artists.

Pandora does let you define multiple stations based on whatever artists
you select, and plays those artists and similar songs on the selected
station. Pandora uses musical characteristics (type of melody, beat,
major instruments, etc.) to determine what is a similar song.
Basically Pandora plays *songs* similar to what you indicate you like.

Slacker is about the same thing as Pandora, except it plays *artists*
that are similar to the ones you've specified to play on a particular
station. This can be a disadvantage as one artist may have played
several different genres/styles during their career, so you may hear
songs that don't exactly fit the station you've defined.

Both Pandora and Slacker let you approve (thumbs up or favorite) or
disapprove (thumbs down or ban) a song. Pandora takes your thumbs
up rating and tries to play songs with similar characteristics in the
future, while Slacker will play *that song* more often in the future.
A thumbs down in Pandora removes that song from the station's
playlist for a month; a ban in Slacker removes that song from the
station's playlist forever.

I like Slacker more than Pandora because of its fine-tuning ability;
you can really make a station your own by tweaking the Artist
Discovery, Popularity (Song), Favorites, and Year sliders
associated with each station. Plus you can buy a portable music player
from Slacker and listen to your stations when offline. I bought the G2
and it's become the only thing I listen to in my car and at work --
again IMHO, it's an exponentially better value to buy a G2 and have
access to millions of songs at no extra charge than to buy an Ipod and
have to manage your own library at $0.99 per song.

And with my Boom and new, now-functioning-perfectly Duet, I can listen
to Slacker anywhere in my house.

Well, if you look at the log files in the original thread,
SqueezeCenter was only looking at the first track for each album for
artwork, so I only embedded the artwork in the first track. I may go
ahead and embed all of them, though - the extra disk space isn't much.
But it may be moot soon; I'm starting on a project to re-rip everything

But that's another story...

[slim] Slimp3 skipping packets?

2009-01-03 Thread roboele

Have one of the original Slimp3 devices. Been operating without fault
until yesterday.

After a general system upgrade including installing latest version of
squeezeserver i ran into trouble:
Now the device locks up for a while when I press a button on the
remote.
And the music sounds garbeled when being played.
When debugging for stream, the server complaints about getting ack on
the wrong packets.

Don't really know if it was caused by the general system upgrade or if
it was only a coincidence.

Have tried to reinstall slimserver, tried both 6.5.0 and the latest
squeeze server, tried to rewrite Slimp3 firmware, tried to move the
devices from a wireless network to a closed wired network. Also tried
to install slimserver on a different computer with a very small music
library.
But the problem will not go away.

Any ideas? I hope it is not a hardware fault in the slimp3 device ...

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-03 Thread corbey

I just started using iPeng 1.0(4) a couple of weeks ago and really like
it, especially for browsing albums in my library.

One question: Can you use iPeng to add an item, like a new radio
station, to your favorites list? If so, I have found that functionality
yet.

One suggestion: Would it be possible to show which squeezebox player
you're controlling on every screen? I'm getting used to it, but it can
be a bit frustrating to choose the program you want, only to find out
that you're playing it on the wrong squeezebox. A more direct means of
choosing and syncing players would be nice too.

You can skip songs by just playing the station again. Hope they
implement the thumbs up/thumbs down functionality on the website to the
squeeze controller.

Re: [slim] Itunes Problem

2009-01-03 Thread NoodlesSmash

Hmm, more confusing! I have updated to the latest everything! Some of
the albums (my obscure ones) don't get found on amazon when using
ctrl+L in MM, so I looked for alternative ways. I have found if I go to
http://albumart.org and search for them I can paste them into the album
art box in the left pane of MM. However, if I try to do this on an
album basis it doesn't work and doesn't add the album art info to the
tag. I have to go through each song and THEN I have to go and set the
album art as front cover or whatever IN EACH SONG before it works.
Then I get things mostly right but scrolling through the albums shows
the wrong album cover until it comes into focus. This is bizarre and
driving me nuts!!!
Stay happy,
Noodles

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-03 Thread pippin

Adding favorites: not yet, will be in the next release.
Player name: I'll experiment a bit with putting it into the title bar
(which is about the only place I seewhere I could put it.
Direct control: how should that be? I mean: right now the MultiPlayer
control is typically one touch and one swipe away. Do you mean I shuold
spend some space on each page, just to get rid of the swipe? I mean: you
would still need at least a button touch or something. And if you use
players a lot (like I do), you can stay on that page and then it
wouldn't make any difference at all, wouldn't it?
Or did I miss something on that?

 Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, I've had problems with this. I noticed it was worse when wireless
signal was low. I've now installed a wireless repeater range extender
and it's MUCH better.

Thanks td for that extensive reply!
I've been using Pandora quite a bit, and didn't even know that banned
songs only are banned for a month! I do enjoy it, I've set up special
stations for my wife and myself, and often use quickmix. Seems to hit
the spot often times, but it does play some songs too often.
I'll check out Slacker a bit more though...

Yep, the Squeezebox UI does Pandora's thumbs up/down. Hit the center
button (or push the wheel on Boom) to see the screen where you can say
I like this song or I don't like this song.

Re: [slim] endless cycle of firmware updates

2009-01-03 Thread amorphia

I bit the bullet and did the update... so for what it's worth I thought
I might as well report the results in case it's useful for anyone else.
On a QNAP TS-109 II, running SSOTS 3.0beta13 to enable SqueezeCenter,
the upgrade to SC 7.3 was fairly painless, and AlienBBC is working
nicely (after very limited testing) and actually now has a slightly
more user friendly install method for the 7.3 version. In fact, I am
glad I upgraded because it seems that AlienBBC can now rebuffer listen
again streams (previously for me it would just restart the stream,
meaning I was limited to the live streams only).

Having said all that, I would still be very interested if someone could
let me know the hack necessary so that I can now stop updating just
because SqueezeNetwork updates their firmware!

Cheers,

Ben

Re: [slim] Boom + Duet = Slacker problem?

2009-01-03 Thread tdnuerf

Looking into their music-selection algorithms, it appears that giving a
Pandora song a thumbs down does remove it from the current station
permanently. But, whoa! If you give another song by the same artist a
thumbs down, the artist is banned from that station. Seems a bit
severe to me.

This info straight from http://blog.pandora.com/faq/#18.

[slim] Spectrum analyzer displays mostly high frequencies

2009-01-03 Thread robdesalle

Hi all,
Newbie here with my first posting to the Forums.
I've had an SB3 for a few years, and recently bought a Duet, and love
them both. Revolutionary products in the consumer audio market, in my
mind; I suspect nearly all of you will agree with me.
Here's the problem: Back when I first got my SB3 (with 6.5 version), I
put the full-screen Spectrum Analyzer on the display to test my
visual/audio frequency correlation and was disappointed to find that
the display didn't seem to jibe with my perception in that lots of
treble was activating the display bars, but not much in the bass was
showing up. (I am not an audio professional, but have extensive
experience with running live sound reinforcement systems, and lots of
practice tweaking tone controls, graphic equalizers, and parametric
equalizers.) I searched through the Forums for postings on the subject
and found the old stuff from Vidur (gone from the Forums since summer
2005), and not much since. It looks to me as if this display has been
ignored since then and it needs to be revisited.
Here's why-
I downloaded some MP3 test tones and played them through the SB3 with
the Spectrum Analyzer display (and simultaneously ran the SB3 output to
a Real-Time Analyzer to verify the frequency). This test verified my
suspicion- most of the 32 bars in the display are for midrange and up,
with just the single far right (or left) bar activating for the bass
frequencies. I've got some pictures, but you can perform this test for
yourself with readily available test tones from a test CD or Internet.
Send a 1 kHz (midrange) signal to the SB3, and 3 bars will show-
.III
(I used 32 . and I to show it graphically). That single . on the left
is the bass and the 28 .'s to the right are the treble. This is
seriously skewed, and I think someone may have coded it with 64 bins,
but it is only displaying the top 32 (or some such simple coding
error).
What are your thoughts on the 32 bar Spectrum Analyzer display? Is it
entertainment? Eye-candy? Useless? Possibly useful if it were
showing the full audio spectrum in a properly proportioned and weighted
manner? (That's my position).
Thanks in advance for your kind and considerate replies.
Rob

[slim] squeeze box wallwart

I have an original squeezebox I haven't used in ages. I think I have the
correct wallwart but as no voltage is marked on the unit itself I would
like to know if the wallwart is correct. As I live in Oztralia I
assume it is a European unit - not that it probably makes much
difference. thanks for any guidance
