Are you sure it is possible/advisable to install an Add-in without
uninstalling the previous version?

I'd also noticed that the new version won't be available until the
previous version is uninstalled, but I thought it may be just the
Add-in tab being 'flaky'.

I run only the WRT54GL stock FW as well. Rock solid for my setup. But
should you (now or later) have a need for the DD-WRT advanced options
and tweaking you have that option if needed.

Like anything involving WiFi, do the basics:
- check for signal interference at the location(s) of your WiFi
devices
- check for the strongest WiFi ch's (1 or 6 or 11) being broadcast by
your neighbors and choose a different ch
- get the basic setup functioning properly with your devices before
enabling every feature on the router
- secure your WiFi (WPA+AES) after initial device setup

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

2009-02-18 Thread Michael Herger
Are you sure it is possible/advisable to install an Add-in without
 uninstalling the previous version?

The more time I spend on this, the less optimistic I am. In fact, a msi file
requires you to uninstall any previous version if the _filename_ changes. I'm
sure there's a reason for this, but it's stupid. If we want to have the build
number in the filename, we'll have to do the full uninstall/re-install cycle.
Except for the time spent for the uninstall this would be acceptable.

But WHS is even more stupid: it doesn't keep track of its registry key
responsible for the add-in list. Ok, I can teach the installer to do this job
for the WHS Console. But worst of all: you can't uninstall and replace a dll
which is being used. Thus you can't run an update of a WHS add-in from the WHS
Console, as while you're running the installer, that very WHS Console is still
using the old add-in version...

I still have to figure out what magic WHS developers are expected to apply to
make this user friendly.

Same is true with Last.fm in Canada. In Canada they can use Last.fm on

I'd recommend a visit to the wegotserved.co.uk forums for advice. :)

For most people it will be an install for an upgarde of SC7, so
uninstall and reinstall won't be too much bother.
It only becomes painful for the nightlies, but that adds to the beta

2009-02-18 Thread ralphy

The best way I've found is to shutdown squeezecenter and delete the
player settings block from server.prefs. The forget this player and
reset player settings in SC still keep the settings for the initial
player type in server.prefs.

Each player block starts with a line that looks like this, with the
appropriate mac address for the player in question;

_client:00:00:00:00:00:02:

and ends with the following line, all indented using 2 spaces.

volume: 88

Delete all lines in between including the above two lines and startup
squeezecenter again.

The Roku emulates an SB1, so theoretically it should be able to synch
using the latest SC. However synching SliMP3/SB1 is harder than newer

2009-02-18 Thread bpa

IIRC The Roku internal buffer size/handling is different to an SB1 so
when SC does sync calculations they don't quite match and so audio will
not sync. It may be possible to sync two Roku but a mixed group is
unlikely. A few years ago there was a long thread where a user
investigate this issue - it would be worth checking out but sync code
has changed a lot since that thread.

The FUNCTIONALITY of SN should be supported by iPeng if it's run
through SqueezeCenter (that is, using Internet Radio and Music
Services through SC). You can NOT, however, run iPeng purely through
SN, you will always need SC running.

Version 1.1 is planned to support a direct connection to SN which then
will no longer require SC.

I can't talk about Napster, haven't used that myself. Is this available

Hello,

I just purchased and installed my copy of iPeng. I am pretty happy
with it, save for some minor sluggishness when it starts up. Further,
I have noticed a few times it does not identify the SB3 which is
playing some content.

I have one question, I use the iTunesupdate plugin to rate the songs.
I do this by hitting a # on the remote and the SB3 shows the rating.
Is there some way the plugins usage can be incorporated?

There is a distinct possibility this may just not happen, but I thought
I would ask.

Thanks,

You have to use the TrackStat plugin along with iTunesupdate.
iPeng will then show the rating on the overlay with the progress bar.

Thanks for the replies. I found out that going up scrolls to the end.
Only most of the time I rush past the desired position and after
returning I scroll back to the top. But that is my personal handicap.
I understand that the option all tracks on top is not a simple
setting. Why not use the same order as in SqueezeCenter?

I have a license for the compiler, so I can distribute the executable.

That means I can share it with anyone I want. That's fairly standard

[slim] Resampling with sox

2009-02-18 Thread lauret

As of version 7.3.2 extended resampling is supported:

Improved playback of high-resolution audio tracks. Sound eXchange
(SoX) now resamples higher-rate FLAC or Ogg tracks to lower
sample-rate FLAC compatible with your player. Previous 7.3.1 release
resampled only to MP3 format.

My question is: is it possible to select the output bit depth for
resampling? My DAC is a 16-bit DAC, so the last bits get truncated.

And is it possible to select the preferred sampling frequency? I would
like to transcode 96kHz in 48kHz and 88.2kHz in 44.1kHz as the sampling
frequency is then halved.

[slim] iLibs to manage large iTunes music library

2009-02-18 Thread garypine

I found a product called iLibs (http://www.copytrans.net/ilibs.php) by
accident and quickly found that it solved a problem that I was having
managing iTunes my Squeezebox Duet. Squeezebox Duet only supports one
music folder - in my case, my iTunes folder. I wanted to be able to
continue to add music to iTunes and exceed the 160 gig limit if my
classic iPod.
So my issue wasn't having multiple people with multiple iPods using the

same computer to sync to the same library - what iLibs was designed
for.
In my case I am the only one using my laptop but I have a 160 gig
iPod classic, a 2 gig Nano (for audio books) and the Squeezebox Duet -

all accessing the same library. No problem - iLibs works fine for this.

I just set up a Squeezebox library into which I dump all new CDs. I
then set up three users using iLibs, one for the main libary that the
Squeezebox Duet uses, one for the iPod classic, a smaller, subset of
the main, larger library and one for my Nano. Switching back and forth
with iLibs is a snap.

Re: [slim] Artist logic bug?

2009-02-18 Thread Phil Meyer
It's an attempt by the DB to detect artists with non-exact matches to be
considered the same artist.

In your case, I think it's due to the setting that allows configurable article
names to be ignored for sorting.

Accented characters has a similar issue. José Gonzalez and Jose Gonzalez are
seen to be the same artist, but the name displayed in the app is dependent on
the order that the scanner scanned the files. If you correct a tag to make the
names consistent, a rescan for new/changed files doesn't correct it - a full
rescan is required.

Re: [slim] Playing music not in SqueezeCenter library

2009-02-18 Thread head

I’ve had my SB Duet for a month and really love it but I am getting more
and more frustrated over the inability to play any file/folder that is
not in the music library. Rescanning my library takes ages and I want
to be able to play new music immediately before adding to the library
(that is done after verifying that all tags are correct and when any
missing covers have been downloaded). Also, occasionally I listen to
classical music that I do not want in my library and it still happens
that I buy old-fashioned CD’s that I want to play without ripping.

How come this basic functionally has not been given priority? When
searching the buglist I found that this problem (suggested improvement)
was reported in October 2005 (!) and has still not been resolved.

[slim] Playing Specific Track Artist Using a 'Service'

2009-02-18 Thread geebea

Hi all

So... it has been discussed in a number of threads that the Lastfm
functionality in Squeezecentre doesn't allow the user to play a
specific track by a specific artist. We can only assume that this is
due to licensing restrictions. Perhaps this will follow in time.
Also, similarly, it doesn't appear to be possible to control your
Squeezebox directly from the Lastfm website for instance. Once again
this must be due to similar restrictions.

My question is, how about if I am willing to pay and subscribe to a
service that allows me to play specific artist and track on demand
through my Squeezebox, does a service like this exist?

I have researched this in depth over the last 6 months or so and so far
I have been unable to identify a reasonable solution.

Funnily enough, when I demonstrate the system to friends, the first
thing they want to do is find their favorite artist and track and I
have to say well... erm... I can play you similar artists but not the
specific song you want to hear. They always say nah! it's alright.

Don't get me wrong the my radio style solution suits me great but you
have to be able to spend time evolving your radio station and mine now
sounds great. When my dad comes around he wants to listen to reggae and
ska artists and they are not really what i listen to.

Obviously there is a work around using the feedback loop approach and
playing my PC soundcard directly through the Squeezebox. This way I
just play tracks from the Lastfm website, but there is a bit of a delay
and it is not really an integrated solution.

Now, I hope I am just missing something and that I am talking rot, feel
free to tell me, but I am pretty sure that there isnt a service out
there that wants my money and provides the full package.

Cheers

My 4 drives are Seagate’s 7200:11 Barracuda 1TB sata drives (only 4
months old) and taken from there website there are issues with the
firmware which may turn it into a brick. They say its s small amount of
drives but 4 of my 4 are affected and there are almost 40+ page threads
on their forums with these issues.

Luckily a have a b/u but these are also on affected / defective drives.
Right now they are at Seagate Data Recovery Company to restore them.
Hope all goes well 2300 cds were dumped on them

The info can be seen at the below link.

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931NewLang=en

I just wanted to spread the word to help owners protect themselves from
potential data loss.

If affected be sure to b/up now and follow the above link.
(you should always have a backup)

I will update once I see what I get back from data recovery. Cross my
fingers..

OK, basically you have proved its probably not the PLE. But it could
still be the hub or anything else back to the SC Host. Can you easily
run one of the SB3s directly off the PC running SC so that you can see
if its the Hub?

I am now playing the song in FLAC FLAC Native over wireless and am not

Re: [slim] Squeemote, device synching

2009-02-18 Thread Luke Redpath

Good news: I've made a lot of progress on Squeemote this week and am
hopeful that I can submit a new release to Apple this weekend. Here's
the preliminary changelog:

* Added support for device synching
* Devices can now be powered on/off
* New quick device switching interface from Now Playing screen
* Added browse by genre
* Tab order can be rearranged (order will be saved when Squeemote is
closed)
* Improved data caching mechanism. Data is now initially cached on
first load, and future cache updates are automatically downloaded in
the background if a server rescan has taken place since the cache was
last updated. Manual resyncs are no longer necessary
* Cache the artists list for improved performance
* Improved support for servers with authentication enabled when
auto-detecting server, with a simple authentication dialog (no manual
settings required other than username/password)
* Fixed bug where Squeemote would stop receiving updates after being
locked for a period of time

Re: [slim] Wierd choppy music issue

2009-02-18 Thread UNCMo96

I have a Verizon FIOS router (made by actiontec) which the squeezecenter
computer is connected to. Connected to the router is a netgear wired
hub. The powerline ethernet is connected from this hub. I have 2
powerlines which have my SB3s (they never worked well over wireless and
powerline has worked flawlessly).

Just for kicks, I reripped the flac file of that song and put it in the
library and still had the same issue with just that song. I tried
hooking the squeezebox up directly to the FIOS router (no hub, no
powerline) and still had the same issue. Every other song I've tried
playing works fine with both directly hooking the SB3 to the router or
using powerline ethernet.

Very wierd Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thankfully Seagate's hardware is pretty rock solid. If they had just
been more open about the firmware issue instead of trying to paper over

installing the old way (exe file) on the ripcaster site.

There is currently a bug in the WHS installer where it will list every
version in the installed add-ins list unless you uninstall via the
console before installing each update. If you don't update often, it
shouldn't be a big deal to do it that way.

With the WHS installer, you also get a Squeezecenter tab in the console
which allows you to start/stop SC, run cleanup tasks, and a few other
 things.

You may want to read this thread for details:

Enjoy the HP MediaSmart. One thing to keep in mind, if you plan to use
the PVConnect (Twonky server) that comes with the HP server, you will
want to set Squeezecenter to use a different port. I tried running
Twonky on a different port, but never could get it to work right, and
 ended up removing Twonky.

Couldn't you still use your Netgear as backup for the MSS? Unless you
plan to re-purpose the hard drives, of course.

Thanks so much for the info. I am looking forward to diving in this
weekend.

As for the Ready NAS NV - it was always a little slow and problematic
for me. At least half the time my backups ended up having issues. So I
figured I would just update and re-purpose the disks. I am going to pop
the empty nas with the gb of ram on ebay - if I get $200 I'll be happy
for the year and a half of use I got out of it

I've been using Squeezecenter on my MSS since I got it and it works
great. You can either install it by remotely logging in via remote
desktop (something new for me), or by using the WHS addin program
 launcher
 http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?autocom=downloadsshowfile=47
which allows you to access the MSS's desktop just like a regular PC.
MSS will warn you that it's not recommended, but I haven't seen any
 problems.

You will need need to right click on the install program to unblock
it, i.e. let Windows Home Server trust it for installation. Also,
make sure you choose to run Squeezecenter as a service. I'm not sure
if you have that option at installation, but you can definitely run
SqueezeCenter Startup Options from the Squeezecenter program list
 afterward.

I have the Duet controller and it works beautifully with it.

Are you running 7.4 beta or 7.33 nightly?

Actually I'm running 7.3.2, which doesn't have the MSS add-in, but it
runs fine - I access everything I need via the web interface.
