Re: [slim] Favourites: Alien BBC anomilies

2009-03-04 Thread bpa

But why did the problem not exist with Radio 4 Long Wave? You said it
had managed differently. Why the lack of consistency with adjacent
 presets in Alien BBC?

Radio stations often change the specific URLs they use for a station.
Most web users do not notice as they just click a listen type button.
AlienBBC takes the same approach - it access the web page where the BBC
holds the station URLs - parses the web pages and extracts the current
station URL.

This means if BBC changes the URL for say Radio 4 - your Favorite will
stop working but the AlienBBC Radio 4 live will work as it will pick up
the latest URL.

Unlike the main live URLs The BBC squirrels the Radio 4 LW URL in a
hard to parse page and rather then spend a lot of effort
developing/testing/maintaining code to handle this one URL - the actual
URL is put into the AlienBBC menu. It is a case deciding how best to
spend limited development time.

Re: [slim] General Dissatisfaction

2009-03-04 Thread drs

Well, a little progress, and maybe a step back.

I am pointing SC to look for tracks in \\computer_name\x\music\ This
is so I can copy over playlists generated on the laptop with winamp as
this is how it sees the tracks. When I rescan the library, the full
albums are showing the tracks at this location, while the partial
albums see the tracks at X:\music\ So, the same tracks with a
different path. Moreover, clearing and rescanning the library puts
different tracks in the partially full albums. There are, at present,
no playlists.

This begs the question of how this was happening when SC just looked in
x:\music, or when the tracks were on a remote drive, so I'll need to
rescan to investigate.

I couldn't see what version of SC you are using, or what OS+browser?

XP pro, seamonkey/mozilla/IE, most up to date release of SC.

SC7 Settings Player Menus

If all you want is access to your main music folder for selecting music
you can Delete the entire Music Library menu item then Add back in just
the Music Folder item. Now Music Folder is a main menu item.

All of this can be undone, delete menu item is really a hide menu

I've not done this with the Music Library menu, but it has worked on

Did you do a full rescan? We added support for sox in 7.3.3, but this requires
a rescan of the collection.

this new behavior or has it been like this since you started having

Re: [slim] You Might Be A Squeeze Geek If...

2009-03-04 Thread maggior

I have one of those Klipsch iPod speaker systems myself. Side by side,
the Klipsch sounds better to my ears too - more bass. The two are a
different design - the Klipsch system is ported (the port is in the
back) and the Logitech system is sealed.

When doing my comparison, I noticed that the Boom is very sensitive to
location. I'm not up on speaker design, but I wonder if this is
because of the different designs (sealed vs. ported).

When I had the Boom sitting away from the wall, it sounded very anemic
in the bass area. Once I moved it within 6 inches of the wall, viola,
there was bass. My wife even noticed a big difference and thought it
was pretty neat to see what a difference it makes.

I put my daughter's Boom on top of a book shelf a few inches from the
wall. With the volume at a decent level, I can actually feel the bass
in the floor.

Re: [slim] General Dissatisfaction

2009-03-04 Thread agentsmith

Instead of asking the original poster what browser he is using and all
that, I agree with a lot of the points he made. I have tried many
combinations of PCs, browsers and Windoze versions, and the performance
with a large database is mostly quite slow and inconsistent.

I do have a large music library and most other GUI software including
the ubiquitous iTunes does glide thru the same collection with
considerable ease. I can not understand how in this day and age that a
database of 20-3 records could suck so much performance.

And in regards difficulty to maintain, web interface does have its
advantage, but maintaining a music library is not one of them. With
GUI base library manager, I can sort, tag, add and delete with
instantaneous ease, and I don’t have to rescan the whole library after
every single change.

And after all these years of using Squeeze, I still do not know a one
step way of adding or deleting a single album without rescanning. I
found a roundabout way of adding a folder via the add radio URL. But
what about deleting tracks?

I recently found a solution which is to use OrangeCD and bypass the
Squeezecenter interface altogether. But it would be very nice if there
is an integrated solution. I know many do not agree, but
tagging/Library Management and Squeeze Server belong together. The tie
in of iTunes/iPod sort of proves that concept.

I bought an Airport Express and was this close to moving to that
platform altogether. The purchase of the nice sounding Transporter
saved me from moving.

I really don't see why you guys constantly need to add or remove stuff :
I only add new music when I buy a new disc, and never remove anything. I
don't really see the need to manage your library in SqueezeCenter. I
use foobar2000 when I want to manage my collection, and then it gets
updated next time I scan my library, no need to scan it constantly.

That being said, I also fail to see how Squeezecenter can perform so
poorly : It uses 50% of my Core 2 Duo E4300 @ 2.9Ghz for like 10
seconds before displaying the album list when foobar2000 does it
instantly, and it uses about 150MB of RAM where Foobar2000 uses 12MB.
I do realize SC has to manage more stuff, but still, I'm not sure that
Perl + MySQL is the ultimate solution as far as performance is

[slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?

Hi everyone,

Have a sad case to tell... I recently moved from the US to the UK, and
I was so glad to finally have my beloved Squeezebox back in my hands, I
plugged it into the UK power line with what I thought was a working
power adaptor/transformer, but all was not good. I've come to the
conclusion that the transformer part of the adaptor no longer works, so
I think I've fried my unit. Any easy way I can figure this out? Not
sure if Logitech could even fix what broke, and I'm afraid what the
costs would be. Fortunately I have two other SBs so I'm not without my
prcious.

Thanks everyone, part of this is just to have you all commiserate on my
sorrows.

Sounds like the streams are not 44.1khz streams. The faster ones are
likely to be 22khz and the slower ones 48khz. Squeezeplay is still very
beta, especially where playback is concerned, so it doesn't surprise me

Well there will be an eventual change (back) to SQLite, which may
improve things. I am hardly an SQLite guru, but it has supposedly made
improvements over the past few years in performance. For the SC design,
that would probably cut a lot of overhead. If the indexing/query
optimizing/etc has caught up with MySQL, it could be very good.
(Though it will mean I can't fondly it as easily from a web page..)

So your Music Folder in SettingsBasic Settings is designated as
\\computer_name\x\music\, correct? Or are you using both local and
network, or exactly how do you have your music storage structured?

Is computer_name a separate computer or the same computer running
SqueezeCenter?

This is so I can copy over playlists generated on the laptop with
winamp as this is how it sees the tracks. When I rescan the library,
the full albums are showing the tracks at this location, while the
partial albums see the tracks at X:\music\

Do you have X: mapped on the server to \\computer_name\x\, or (if
the music is local on the server) is X: an actual drive partition on
the server?

I've seen problems in the past where SqueezeCenter tries to normalize
file paths by taking a network share and replacing it with a local
mapped drive wherever possible. There have been some changes in the
code around this, but network paths have been problematic for SC and I
doubt if all the issues have been fixed. The solution has been to
unmap the drive if at all possible.

So, the same tracks with a different path. Moreover, clearing and
rescanning the library puts different tracks in the partially full
albums. There are, at present, no playlists.

Do you have any files that can be considered playlists stored within
the music directories? CUE sheets, for example?

Re: [slim] Playing Specific Track Artist Using a 'Service'

2009-03-04 Thread MikeekiM

I avoided a pay-for service for a long time...

In the end, I ended up subscribing to Rhapsody, which costs
$12.95/month... My rationale is that it's the price of a single CD per
month, and I have access to a huge library in an on-demand use model
(which is what you are looking for)...

Sometimes you have to pay to play... :(

I am still enjoying it... I love finding out what others with my
interests are listening to in last.fm, and then being able to access
those artists on demand in Rhapsody... It's fantastic...

Update/Edit: Based on your original post, it sounds like you are
willing to pay for this service...what changed your mind?

[slim] TWiT.am doesn't play on controller

2009-03-04 Thread web161

Hello all,

I'm trying to stream the TWiT live audio stream to my controller.

http://twit.am/listen.m3u

I can stream no problem to softsqueeze, SB2 or SB3 units. But no dice
on the controller audio playback. Every time I try, the controller
starts to buffer, then reboots. I realize playback on the controller
is still beta, but I'm wondering if anyone else can confirm what I'm
seeing here?

Running latest 7.3.3 nightly, WinXP Pro

Thanks for your time

[slim] Problems with PC name on network

2009-03-04 Thread SW4Peter

I have a PC that runs squeezecenter on XP and has worked fine for ages,
It's network name is loftvaio. I used to be able to use any browser in
my network and access squeezecenter by typing loftvaio:9000 into the
browser. Recently (I can't remember when it started) this stopped
working and I have to type the ip address of the PC instead of the
name, so 192.168.1:9000. The ip address is not alway the same so I have
to try out a few until I get the right one.

I have a mac laptop and it recognizes the PC and in the finder and
shows it with the correct name.

Any ideas why the PC can no longer be accessed by its name?

Re: [slim] General Dissatisfaction

2009-03-04 Thread drs

Well, the multiple listing seems to have been mostly solved be
eliminating *all* playlists. However, this seems to mean that I can't
have playlists at all (even ones totally separate from the music files
were causing issues), which is odd to say the least.

One question, say I have two tracks, A and B, saved in totally
different locations for who knows why. Assuming they are tagged
correctly, the album names match exactly, SC still seems to consider
them different albums. Any way to fix this short of reorganizing the
directory structure?

Thank you. And really, other annoyances aside, this is the real issue.
It is slow and clunky to use, and I am frustrated by that. Leaving
what is there alone is fine, but a slick fast interface would be nice.
Indeed, a plug-in to winamp/foobar/whatnot that made SC appear as a
sound card would be perfect.

[slim] uPNP servers

2009-03-04 Thread yfni

Besides the squeezecenter I have a upnp server running.
And I set my system to search for upnp servers. The problem however is
that it only pickups the upnp server on a different computer. (not the
one on the same server, i want it to pick)

The underlying reason why I want to use the upnp server is because
Although I have everything Tagged I still want to be able to use my
folder structure. Something you can do with Squeezecenter. But the
problem with squeezecenter is that when you set it to use the folder
structure that it doesn't show you the tags while browsing. It shows
filenames.

Unless I'm wrong and there is a way to show folder tagged music. I
want to be able access the upnp server on the same machine.

(can i manually add servers...)

btw i have a duet

There isn't a way. I suffer form the ame problem. I have directories of
singles organsided by decades in my main flac based music library and
also similarly named directories under an mp3 folder (as I've not been
able to get some tracks in the flac format). I'd like the mp3s and flac
files for any decade to appear as one album, but it seems impossible. I
am perpetually stuck with two 70s singles albums, an mp3 one and a
flac one.

Annoyingly, Slimcenters insistance in ignoring the album tag and
treating any files in distinct directories as different albums has no
benefit at all for me (due to the way my collection is organised).
:-(

BTW. If I was you I'd give up with the web browser and iPeng on an
iPhone or even just the plain old reliable IR remote. The web browser
is only good for settings that you can't access on other devices, It
has been slow and clunky on every (windows based) computer and networks
I've ever used it on (which is a fair few).

We never got an answer to how your directories are set up, but

Do the playlists use different looking paths to the same files that are
on the local server?

\\computer_name\x\music\...

vs.

X:\music\...

If you create playlists in Winamp on a different computer then the file
paths in those lists will be from the perspective of that computer and
will differ from the local paths to the same files. SqueezeCenter
can't tell that the paths are equivalent and so it creates two entries.
The solution is not to remove the playlists, but to modify the paths.
If you're a programmer you should be able to easily create a script to
do this.

It's too bad that people just disappear in the night, without any

The file server which also runs SC has music files in X:\music\ This
whole drive is shared, so the other computers see is as
\\computer_name\x\music\

In order that playlists made in winamp on my laptop could be seen by
SC, I tried having SC look at the network share rather than the local
drive. But, even when it does this and the playlists only contain
references from \\computer_name\... SC still sees a few random tracks
in X:\. Get rid of all playsists, and it does not seem to matter
whether it is pointed at the drive, or at the share, it only sees one
copy.

Moreover, the duplicate tracks do not represent what is on the
playlist, which is the really odd part. A can put a whole album on the
playlist and have only a few of the tracks show up as duplicates.
Additionally, scan (and clear) the library twice and the duplicates are
different each time.

Probably not. SC currently takes into consideration the directory where
files are located to determine album membership.

Really? By version 7 nobody thought to put a only use tags option?
The *whole point* of tags is that is makes it so that you don't need to
organize the files. They should be able to be dumped in one big
directory, or spread across the computer, or on 6 different computers,
and the library, via tags, should organize them. What is the point of
even having a relational database backend? How hard is SELECT * FROM

If not for organizing, why attach metadata? The current setup requires
keeping two distinct types of organization in sync, which is using the
file system as a secondary database, which is poor database design. One
or the other is fine, both is an unnecessary, and as we see here,
unhelpful redundancy.

Anyhow, SELECT * FROM DB WHERE (ALBUM_TAG = 'Greatest Hits' AND ARTIST
= 'Juice Newton') ... this isn't rocket science. If Ms. Newton
released two Greatest Hits albums, add the year to the search. If she
released 2 in the same year ... maybe you accidentally bought two of
the same cd, or maybe you can call one of the Vol 1.

Did he answer, is all the music in one directory? If so, could this be
the cause of slow performance?

Re: [slim] So what about Movies

2009-03-04 Thread rossp

I'm not familiar with the Duet but I think the PS3 can do what you're
looking for - I have one next to my SB3 - I use the playstation for
streaming web video, streaming HD/SD content, and playing blu ray
discs. Oh and you can play games too I use PlayOn to stream Hulu,
ESPN, etc to the TV and PS3 Media server to stream locally stored
content from a windows server box. Works great. if you want the
media stored locally, the server software lets you copy the media to
the PS3 instead of playing it.

[slim] Guide: Setting up a VPN to your Squeezecenter for easy access in Music Source

2009-03-04 Thread large

I wrote a guide for setting up VPN between your Squeezecenter and the
world: http://lars.werner.no/?p=132

Since the Duet is limited in Music sources to only IP a VPN connection
could be a way to ease around its limits.

Many friends with older versions has been using this technique for
quite a while and it works like a rock.

Funny too, since I got full control over all my friends Squeezies ;)

Re: [slim] So what about Movies

2009-03-04 Thread agillis

I use xbox media center (XBMC) it runs on almost any platform. Xbox,
windows, OSX, AppleTV, and Linux. I run it on an old xbox that cost me
$30. It works great. I just keep all my movies on my VoretxBox. I have
been working on Auto Ripping of DVDs. It's not automatic yet but
VortexBox will rip DVDs in manual mode.

Re: [slim] need better wireless range?

2009-03-04 Thread Club1820

I had come across this awhile back. Always wondered if this actually
worked. So if anyone here tries it, please post the results. If it
does work, this obviously would help those Squeeze users who get poor
reception.

What I am wondering... Is why doesn't he want his friend to do the same
as he did? Share the music. ???

Re: [slim] need better wireless range?

2009-03-04 Thread Goodsounds

I use something like this (see the corner reflector at
freeantennas.com). I get significant signal boost to help me resolve a
challenging house/wall layout situation.

Since I started using the signal reflectors, on the few occasions when
I have had dropouts or signal problems, it has always been the case
that someone or something has bumped the reflectors to change their
aim. A simple straightening fixes the problem.

Several friends have also adopted this technology with favorable
results. So yes, they do work.

Re: [slim] SB3 network bridge dropping connection

2009-03-04 Thread matthijskoopmans

I would be quite interested if this got resolved with the latest
firmware. I am thinking about connecting my bluray player to the bridge
as well.

any other issues I should consider (i.e. performance)

Regards,

Matt
