[slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag
I know that there has been lots of discussion about Replay Gain, but I wonder if I could suggest a change/enhancement to the behaviour of 'Smart' Replay Gain. As I understand it, the Smart setting recognises if you are playing a series of individual tracks or a complete album and picks the appropriate adjustment based upon the Track and Album replay gain tags in the file. Now here comes the rub. I use iTunes to organise and tag my music and it only has one replay gain tag (actually called Sound Check in Apple world). I think that this is stored as a non-standard tag called iTunesNORM. There does not seem to be an easy way to set separate track and album tags. I guess I could use a different program, but I like iTunes and it works well for me with a mix of MP3 and Apple Lossless files. SC seems to read the iTunes adjustment just fine, but because there is only one tag, it uses the same tag for both Track and Album adjustment and so the Smart setting makes no difference. Could I suggest that where there is only one Volume Adjustment/Sound Check/Replay Gain tag (or equivalently when a specific Album Gain tag is not present) then the SC 'Smart' setting should use the adjustment in the tag for playing individual tracks and set a zero adjustment when playing albums. I recognise that this means there will be a jump in volume when moving from playing individual tracks to an album, but at least once you settle down to listen to an album you can just adjust the volume at the beginning. At the moment, I have to remember to bury down into the settings menu and turn Replay Gain off manually before listening to an album. What do others think? [slim] Buried Treasure
Been in Cyprus a few days and made a start at sorting the house out. My wife inherited it from her aunt, and the old lady threw nothing out since the house was built in 1952. Been mucking out the kitchen cupboards. They were lined with newspapers from 1962. But in one of the outhouses . . . two remarkable finds. A Philips BX230U table top wireless (radio), and a PYE BLACK BOX I have know for years there was an acoustic gramophone in the house, but the Black Box is a very nice find. I changed the plug - it had a 2 pin 5A plug with only one pin! I put one of the 78s from the gramophone on the Monarch Autochanger, and off it went. The Philips radio does work but may need some attention - it's an average wireless of the day. The Black Box was rather up market - what do they sell for today? I am staring at a very silent Boom I brought with me from UK. My laptop works if one chair is precisely positioned near the open lounge window - then I can borrow (with permission) WiFi from a neighbour. There is not enough signal for anything serious, that will have to wait for http://www.cyta.com.cy/index-en.htm and http://www.prime-tel.com/ to get themselves sorted out! In the meantime I keep thinking about what I can do with that black box - one small lounge in the house (the Cypriot style entrance) we will leave entirely 50s retro . . . now could I hitch up a hidden SB3 for a Wireless in that room? Lots more pressing issues before fun like that! [slim] SB3 not turning on after extended time unplugged
I'm having an odd problem with my new SB3 (classic). Already have two booms and a duet and have never had any issues setting up or using any of these. I set up a new SB3 in a room with wireless to access SN. Worked well for two weekends. I always unplug the powerstrip that stereo and SB is connected to when I'm away. On a return after 2 weeks, I turned on power strip and got nothing from SB3. Screen is blank. Never saw the usual booting up screen (logitech, connecting, etc.). The SB is getting some power at least (the red glow behind the optical digital out is there). Tried plugging and unplugging several times. Tried the usual hold ADD button down when plugging back in or Hold #1 button down. And it was not the brightness being turned to off either. Nothing worked. Tested the remote control on an SB Boom and remote is working ok. Tried for about an hour and nothing ever worked---screen was blank and apparently dead. Went to bed, and first thing this morning, the time screen saver is on the SB3, I turned it on with power button and started listening to SN. It has been playing for the last hour just fine. Firmware was up to date by the way. Do I have a faulty unit (or faulty power supply)? Is it something related to being unplugged for two weeks? (although note, after initial SB3 install, it was unplugged for one week and fired back up as soon as plugged in). Andy8421;412839 Wrote: Pippin, Slightly off topic, but have you looked at using the IR capabilities in squeeze products to give iPeng control over other AV devices? To my simple mind, it doesn't seem that much of a stretch. I was wrestling with my Logitech harmony remote yesterday, which has a beast of a touchscreen interface and thought that the iPeng / iPod type application would be much better. Wouldn't involve any additional hardware except for the IR wand as I think squeeze products (apart from duet?) can drive an IR LED directly. The concept of a single remote using an iPod touch that was wireless / networked across all my AV equipment sounded very appealing. Just a thought. SC works as a server application. When you point an IR controller at a SB it just takes the command and passes it to the server. The server then takes action and actually tells the box what to do. This is that way because any device (controller, SB, web interface, 3rd party plugins, ...) can tell the SC server what they want and then the server sends the commands to the device. So the best way to use iPeng in my mind is for it to send commands to the server (which is what it is doing natively) and have the server direct the action appropriately. There are various tools out there to create plugins for example and some of these also pick up the information within the plugin to communicate to other devices. For example I wrote a plugin that picks up volumn changes from the SB (could be driven by iPeng, SB remote, web ...) and it then communicates to an AVR to actually process the request. In iPeng 1.1 it exposes more server sided functionality without actually having rewritten that code natively in iPeng. Asking iPeng to create new and unique controls that would be useful from SC in general is a sticky slope from a development standpoint. Its better, more efficient and cleaner to do this from the server side. Now having said that I am sure that there are some specific features that might be best done natively and don't have a universal appeal. ie like getting access to native content on the iTouch device. -- Aesculus Chris Aesculus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14876 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Squeezebox reconnecting to worst signal in WDS configuration
I have a WDS configuration at home. This basically means that I have two wireless routers where one acts as a wireless bridge to the other. This also means that both have the same SSID, key, etc... Devices then connect to the closest router for the best signal. With my Squeezebox I have a problem though. When the Squeezebox is booted, it does connect to the closest router and gets excellent signal. However, after some period (may be days or weeks) I would suddenly notice that the display is very choppy and the music may be interrupted. After checking the routers, I then notice that the Squeezebox is now connected to the farthest router instead of the closest one. The only way to resolve this is to unplug my Squeezebox and let it reboot after which it again connects to the closest router. Is there any way around this problem ? Also, is this some kind of bug in Squeezebox ? Since my other devices always choose the best signal, and would transparently switch from one to the other if I move around. Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
Chris, actually that was what I meant. However, if iPeng's got to support it, you also need some UI, and just having menus may be a bit too little. Although it has the big advantage that it will work with the Controller and Squeezeplay, too. But you can still re-map menu items to something else and part of this is what the upcoming iPeng 1.2 interface is about. For example, I plan to include a Power button for servers that can shut down a server using the SvrPowerControl plugin and will wake it up by sending a WOL packet. Of course this is all proprietary but once it works you could as well define some standardized interface. Another idea I had, especially with local playback in mind, was that you could connect players to the server that are not really players. They would have only part of the capabilities, most notably not the actual playback capabilities, but you could for example use the interfaces for play, pause, skip, volume... If a plugin did that and used these commands to drive an external unit, it's a way to wrap your whole entertainment into the SB architecture. IRBlaster is going into the direction but not fully so. Your plugin does the same but only in connection with an amp connected to a player, if I understand it right. But theoretically you could write a plugin that wraps a TV control into this, since essentially all you need for a TV is power, skip and volume and then you could have a player TV controlled through your SC based equipment. But theoretically you could write a plugin that wraps a TV control into this, since essentially all you need for a TV is power, skip and volume and then you could have a player TV controlled through your SC based equipment. Cool? Yes but there are two issues here. One is that SC can only interpret certain events. For example in the API you can see what you can subscribe to in the command callbacks. If an event is driven from one of these events, then you can either trap that event and have SC ignore it while your plugin does whatever you want, or you can let SC do its thing and continue to do what you want outside of SC. The other situation is sort of like what you are describing. Complety new events that SC knows nothing about and would never be aware of. Let me give some examples: For the first type of event you may have the turning on/off a SB or adjusting volume, picking a track, running a search etc. All of these events you use your SB for you could attach related events to like having an AMP turn on/off, adjusting your lighting to match the gendre of song being played etc. This is all related to what you are doing with the SB. For the second example its a bit tougher. You have to leave the SC environment and ask yourself what does iPeng need to do thats not connected with a SC event? Perhaps this is your point with the UI. For example maybe you want to kick off an application that shows you how much power all of the SB's and amps you have connected are using. My only point is that things that are intrinsic to SC should stay server sided if possible so it works with the largest possible mixture of devices. Things that are heavily UI or device dependant could run natively. I may still be confused by all of the features you have cooked up for iPeng and we will have to wait and see what comes in 1.2. I just see a lot of features people are asking for are truely capable today, although they may not be available. I was suprised what you had to do to support IRBlaster in 1.1 for example. One would have thought that no special UI would have been required in iPeng to support that. But of course you know what you are getting into :-) -- Aesculus Chris Aesculus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14876 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I guess the bug that added RG and soundcheck together has been resolved in the latest versions so having both won't be a problem like it was a few versions ago. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62137 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
Pippin, Chris, Having read your comments, I can see this is rather more involved than I had appreciated. I looked at Airremote and Iredtouch and they are both pretty much what I was after - iPod multiple remotes - but both involve buying relatively expensive hardware that sits on the network and drives the IR leds to control the AV equipment. I already have that functionality in the squeeze products and they are already sitting next to the devices I wish to control. So I had hoped that it would be a 'relatively' simple task to use the squeeze IRBlaster capability under the control of iPeng to drive the AV equipment. Pippin, if you have a couple of minutes to have a look at the websites for the two products mentioned, they do a good job of describing the functionality I am looking for. This does raise an interesting question for Logitech and other box manufacturers who make their money by giving software away and charging for the box. While some may disagree, the Squeeze Controller and Logitech Harmony handheld remotes are not is the same league as the iPod touch, either in form factor or usability. Harmony in the UK is twice the price of an iPod touch, and is not without its issues. Whether Apple realised it at the time or not, they have produced a multi purpose handheld controller that happens also to be an iPod. This could be a game changer for Logitech and similar. -- Andy8421 Andy8421's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16846 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

MrSinatra;412977 Wrote: i have something very similar... Ah, Mr Sinatra, this Black Box, with a bit of love and attention would play your vintage records very well. Pity I only have a few scratched 78s. The cartridge need replacing with a stereo one (wired in parallel) - the installed mono cartridge would wreck any stereo LP - but even with a new cartridge it would plough up the grooves and make difficult any subsequent playback on a Linn Sondek (or similar). Now the case would be a good sound insulation box for a media PC, but that would be a travesty. -- Labarum Brian Squeezebox 3 Classic and Virgin Cable Box Beresford DAC TC-7510 MK6/4 - Quad 405-2 refurbished by 405man Quart 980s Speakers Labarum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19963 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62139 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
